Re: Harley's from Donegal, Ireland

Hi Dion,
Am certain we are related somehow - people from the same townland usually are. However I've just started doing research so can't help you with details. I lived in Gweedore ( across the water from Braade)as a child so speak some Gaelic and my mother's family are mostly still there. Only cousins on the Harley side though - they all migrated or died.

Some points that might help you. Braade was part of the Marquis of Conyngham's estate ( he owned the barony of Templecrone) and the rent was collected by a family called Alcorn who still live in the area - there should be some rental roll records.

1838 maps County Index Maps exist for Ireland that show details like houses, roads etc - will let you know what our area was like back then.

Patrick Campbell has a book called Death in Templecrone which deals with the famine era in our area- full of useful background info - it's available online.

anthonygallgher.blogspot.com gives history of Templecrone

There's a Donegal Ancestry Centre in Rathmelton 07491 51266

Our surname is also supposed to be originally O'Farrelly and legend has it that we were driven out of Monaghan where the Farellys originated at the time of Plantation. That would explain why Harley is not listed as an Irish Sept or clan and why Catholic Harleys are found chiefly in Donegal.

Re the Icelandic or Viking heritage: my father's people all very tall, strong boned and sandy haired with long faces. Even out in Australia my Dad was known as "Big Joe"

Hope this helps.
Regards

Hi Ann,

Nice to hear from you.

I found out that Patrick (Paddy)was known as Paddy Mor - which in Irish means big Paddy, who would appears to be our common ancestor. My own grandfather was the youngest in his family.

I have started to hit brick walls because of the lack if public records before the 1901 census, due to a fire during the war of independence which destroyed a large amount of public records. I have e-mailed the Parish Priest in St. Mary's of Belcruit (pronounced Bell Critch)to find out how far back his records go, as this is going to be the only avenue available, but I have not heard anything from him. I intend to take a trip up to Donegal later this year and would hope to do some research when I get up there.

If I can be of any assistance please let me know, also I would be grateful for any information you have about your own branch.

Stay in touch

Regards,

Dion Harley

Hello there,
My grandfather was Bryan Harley from Braade but his birthdate is vague. In the 1901 census his age is given as 32 but in the 1911 census his age is given as 45 which would make him born in 1966, so I believe we might be related. He died when my Dad was a teenager - approx 1928. I'm 61 and living in Australia but have just started doing the family history. My grandmother was Ann Boyle.

Regards
Anna Harley (I don't use my married name )

Not sure if related. My grandfather was Edwin Larson, married to Dagmar. He came from Norway. Before moving to Saskatchewan lived in Cooperstown, North Dakota. Went to Norway to bring back his bride Dagmar Johannsen. They homestead along the Battleford Trail near the Saskatchewan Landing. Their 1st child Ralph Larson was born June 24, 1906 in a tent while they were building their house. My father was born Mar 8, 1910, Alfred Edward Larson

James William Harley III -- Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey, UK

I'm trying to find out any information on James William Harley III, who was born on May 1, 1874 in Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey. He was a son of James William Harley II (1849-1892) and Louisa Jane Abbott (1852-ca. 1922). I believe his wife's name was Alice (born 1877). The only items I found on him so far was on the U.K. Census reports. I don't know if he had any children, when or where he died or where he is buried. James William Harley III had three siblings...John Francis (1875-1953), Charles Leonard (1878-1920) and Arthur Emil (1889-ca. 1911). James also went by the name "Turner." Much of the Harley family immigrated to the United States around 1910, but I believe James remained in England. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

I would love to exchange information with you. It does sound like we are working on the same family for sure. Thomas Ettrick, George Norman and John Dudley were some of the children of Thomas Titus Finch Harley and Margaret Jane Gibson. I also have pictures on my Harley tree that maybe you might recognize. I'll have to go and take a look but I think I also have a picture of Thomas Titus, Margaret and some of their girls but I can't put names to them. I think if you were to search the family trees on this site you should be able to come up with mine and see all the pictures. If you can't let me know. I can be reached at chriskim@telusplanet.net

Kim, if you are still looking, I may have a little info. I am pretty sure my stepfather is the Thomas Ettrick, b. 1897. He died in 1969 in Barrie, ON. I can't remember the day, but it was March. Uncle Norm lived in Orillia; his son is still there. His brother, Dudley, lived in South River, ON, where I presently live. He had a large family, & at least one daughter is still living here.

Oh my goodness, I'm I ever glad to hear from you. Thanks so much for replying to my query. I haven't had much luck on my Ireland Harley's and I don't know a whole lot either. My ggg grandfather Thomas Harley I have as being born in Bandon but another one of my relatives here in Canada have that he was born in Clare. He has born in 1797 and I'm not sure who the parents were. He was Church of England here so I did send 30 pounds to the Church of Ireland for Bandon and they never came up with any information. I believe I have him sailing out of the port of Cork in 1833. He is listed as being a weaver. When he arrived here in Canada he was a weaver in Ontario. The other thing I know is that here the family were Orangemen and Masons. I don't know if that means anything or not. Anyway any info on my family would be so truly appreciated. I can never thank you enough for taking the time for answering my query.

Thanks
Kim Nielsen

I am doing research for Canterbury cricket. An edward steane harley (born 9/10/1839 in leicester) lived in christchurch new zealand and played 3 cricket matches for Canterbury in 1864, 1865 and february 1869. One researcher indicates he ran a wine and spirit business in the city and died at Rakahu on 9/6/1901. Could he be the harley who moved to Sri lanka at one stage

Harley's from Donegal, Ireland

Hi,
I am researching Harley's from Donegal.

I would love to hear from other Harley's out there with any connections to Donegal, I imagine that somewhere in the past we have a common ancestor.

Interesting family story is that some we descend from one of two brothers who immigrated from Iceland. Ferdinand is an Icelandic name and has been assumed here - based on the name Ferd. indicated in Griffith's Valuation. Also I believe that Icelandic people do not have last names, at least no in the same tradition as we have.

I believe that the Patriarch is Ferdinand (Ferd.) Harley from Braade & Mullafind (Dungloe Area), Donegal, Ireland (c1780).
He appears to have had 3 children Patrick c1800, James c1800 and Catherine b.1803 (from Griffith’s Valuation 1857 and 1901 Braade Census).
James Harley had 3 sons, Paddy c1830, Bryan b 1821 and Charles c1840. All still living in Braade, Donegal at census.
Paddy had 3 sons, James b.1851, Charles b.1858 & Bryan b.1866.
James is my Great-Grandfather.
Mary O'Donnell (John) married James Harley (Paddy, Braade) on Feb 16 1879 in St. Mary’s Belcruit. Mary's Mother was Madge Ferry.

Additional information is John Harley immigrated to United States in 1912, he travelled on the Columbia, registered to stay with Aunt Hannah Noonan (nee Harley) 192w 10th Street New York.

There appears to be English, Scottish and Irish Harley's.
In Donegal, Harley appears to be an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hEarghaile ‘descendant of Earghal’, a variant of the personal name Fearghal without the initial F. And from what my Father has told me, this is how he spelled his name when at school.
Further, although Cromwell did send forces into Ulster I think that any English Harley's would have likely remained Protestant.
Scottish Harley's are also an unlikely source for my family as it is probable that any “Ulster-Scots” would have been more towards the East of Northern Ireland.
This means that any Harley's from the east (from Cork to Dublin) are likley to not be related as they are most likely from Cromwellian stock.

It is very likely that Thomas was a weaver before he left here. In the early 1820s over 2000 weavers lived in this small town. This was the principal corduroy manufacturing centre in Ireland. However there was a rapid decline by the mid 1820s and there were a huge number of redundant workers depending on charity by the 1830s. During this time there was mass emigration which ties in perfectly with Thomas. I will try to trace him for you but it might take a while! I'll keep you posted.
