Harms Surname DNA Project

A Harms Surname DNA Project (http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Harms) has been established to determine the relationships of the various Harms families in America, Germany, and around the world in order to support genealogical research and provide a deeper understanding of Harms family origins. The project allows participants to have their DNA tested at a group discount and provides a forum to compare DNA results, establish or confirm relationships, and coordinate genealogical research between scientifically proven descendants.

This is a Y-DNA surname study. If you are a man with the surname Harms, you are eligible to join. If you know a man with the surname Harms, please encourage him to join.

Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this project is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA25, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with the Harms surname order a Y-DNA test.

Regards,

Randy Walker
Administrator
Harms Surname DNA Project

Yes that is the correct Fredrick David Harms, but his father was not Suddeth. His father was Jakob Harms and mother Katharina Schramm. He had 3 brothers: Jakob, Johannes and Heinrich. Both parents died within days of each other when Fredrick was only a month old. All boys were raised by Jakob's sister Mary. The 3 oldest boys moved to Chicago and were shoemakers. If you would like all this information, please email me at ldyofpeace@sbcglobal.net. I have been researching my family history for over 20 years.

I am pretty sure that this Fredrick Harms is the same as ours. Unless I am greatly mistaken, Fredrick Harms had a son named John David, who had a son named 'Bud' Albert Harms. If this is right then I have the right Fredrick Harms. If I am again incorrect I apologize for the inconvenience.

Again thanks for your help.

I am not sure if this is the correct Fred Harms.....would have married Velma later in life and they had a daughter Georgi Harms. Fred also had a child, Herbert Kenneth, with a woman in the New York area. Herbert Kenneth was my father.

Fred's parents lived in Devers, Texas. They are the people who actually raise my father.

I am working on my new daughter-in-laws family tree. In fact just today I picked up pictures of the Harm family from Glenville, NE including a possible four generation picture of John, George, Warren and baby Terry Harms no date. Another of Mr. & Mrs. John Harms. The names seem to match those of the 1900 census. Do you have any obituaries on the Harms from Glenville? Thank you, Mary

Looking for any information I can get on a Moederke Harms that married Gerjet Poppen Diepenbroek. They had a daughter in Gross Midlum, Germany on Feb 10 1798 named Moederke Gerjets Diepenbroek, who died in the same location in 1869. That daughter later married Berend Hinderks Westendorp.

My maternal grandmother, Lilian b. 1896 was a Harmes, she had 7 siblings. Their parents were Joseph b. 1854 West Molesey & Eliza.

I have a lot more info if you need it.

Regards

Christine

I have been researching for a connection between my family and a Harms family whose pictures I found in my Grandmothers photo album. So I have some fairly extensive information on Harms families that originally settled in the Highland, Wisconsin and Muscoda, Wisconsin area in approximately 1859. Please contact if there could be a possible connection.

Harms in Ostfriesland, Germany -- formerly Berends?

I am trying to find information on my grandmother's ancestors. Here is the information she had in the family Bible:

Johann Hinrichs Harms, b. 6 Nov. 1860 in Westersander, Germany; d. 25 May 1956 in Hastings, Nebraska

His wife was Motje Gerdes Jurgens, b. 13 Aug. 1862 in Ihlowerfehn, Ostfriesland, Germany; d. 20 Dec. 1941 in Glenvil, Nebraska

Here is the mysterious part. Johann Harms's father's last name was originally Berends, but under Napoleon's regime, their last name was changed to Harms. This has made it hard for me to trace Johann's grandparents. Here is what I have on the parents:

Berend Berends (later Harms), b. 10 Sept. 1807 in Ihlowerhorn, Ostfriesland, Germany; d. 15 March 1867 in Westersanderfeld, Germany.

His wife was Gesche Renken, b. 8 Dec. 1822 in Westersander, Germany; d. 3 Feb. 1893 in Westersander.

Does anyone have any information on the parents for Berend Berends?

Thanks!

Hi Alicia,

I wanted to let you know that I am a direct descendent of Tamme Ihnen Tammen and his wife, Eenke Margaretha Harms Gastmann. They were my Great, Great Grandparents. This is quite an interesting line, especially when that one lineage moves into Nebraska. There are two or three other desc. I know as well.

"tjadena" has sent you valuable information.

Definition ...

OSB = Ortssippenbucher

See these websites for an overview re. OSBs:

http://tcghs.org/OSB.htm
&
http://www.ogsa.us/osbs.shtml

Kind regards,

Kathleen
