Can anyone help me to find my great uncle, James Harper, who was sent from a Home in England to Canada in 1910, and was living with the family of Edward O'Mara in 1913 in Lombardy. I can't find anything about him after that.

Jo Harper

Well, the land was a grant from So. Carolina to protestant emigrants, so it was not from any church. It was some five years later when Rev. Martin brought five ships of Protestants (most all of whom were Presbyterians) in 1772, before that most Protestant religions could be found in So. Carolina. After that I think Presbyterians were the predominant religion. It was clear, however, that they did not want any Catholics in So. Carolina, all emigrants swore as they left the ship that they were not Catholic.

Joanne,
I believe you asked me once why the Harpers left Scotland and I believe it was for religious reasons. I did find something in a Knox genealogy at Albany last month. John Knox "went from Scotland to Ireland with other Scotch emigrants, by invitation of the King of England, to constitute a balance of power against the insurgent Irish Catholics."

I have been supplied with a download of the Harper and Cantzon lines and would be happy to send them to you if you do not have it, from that you could trace present day relatives. I am still trying to find out when the Harpers arrived in Ireland from Scotland, if anyone can help with that I would be grateful.

Records show the family came to America with the promise of land from the church to keep a balance of land owners. There's a common thread. The family was awarded land when they arrived in the US.

Both. At family reunions in Texas, there would be some SC relatives that would come to Mt. Pleasant, Texas where my line,Dr. Samuel G. Harper, settled in 1870's. My family is small here. I wanted to re-connect with some of those folks. I have two grown sons who are interested in this also. I am related to the Harper & Kirk families on both sides of my grandfather's family. The Kirk's settled in Texas also from Lancaster Co., SC. I have family geneology book from SC printed in 1961. Any information would be appreciated.

My daughter attends the little church near the cemetery in the Waxhaw area where the early Harpers are buried. According to her, several people she has talked to are descended from those early Harpers. I don't know if there are actually any Harpers. In our case, my mother-in-law and her siblings were Harpers. She had brothers, but I have been unable to find them.

I will refer your question to her.

I received a copy of the probate record for Samuel Harper from the York County Archives. There was no Will, but the probate includes statements of the children. So, Samuel Harper had the following children:
William Harper, the eldest son
Isabella Harper married to David Russell
Elizabeth Harper married to William Crawford
Samuel Harper
Jean Harper
The last two children were still underage minors in 1772, suggesting that they were born after 1752, but before 1760 when the father died. Isabella (Harper) Russell was born c1749.
Amy -

No connection that I'm aware of. Nothing that I've uncovered in my family points to Pennsylvania, but then, the reason for the exercise is that I'm not sure of the history of my line of Harpers, except for a Northern Ireland connection. There seems to have been various groups of Harpers on the East Coast, some of which came from Scotland/Ireland and England, and some of which came from from a different line in Germany - with German names that were anglicized to "Harper".

- Ted

I'm searching for info on my GGG Grandmother Catherine Sophia Harper b 9 Sep 1799
in Dorchester, Maryland. She married Mathew Littleton 31 Dec 1808 in Ross Co., Ohio.
Well hi cousin! I am the great-granddaughter of Mary Elizabeth 'Molly' Patch Scholl. She is the sister of Jesse Clifton Patch, father of Margaret. I have packed away the research that Margaret did many years ago on the Patch family. I was wondering if there was anyone continuing her work or had the orginial work. It seems as if it mentioned obits and other sources but I could be wrong. Its been awhile since I worked on this line. I would love to fill in some blanks - can you help any?

Jeanne

William Harper (b 1816) was the son of Leonard (1794-1864) and Pattey Follen Harper. William was the grandson of Jesse (1755-1849) and Hannah Ratliff Harper. This is as far back as I have been able to go. Many researchers say Jesse is the son of Jesse and Diana Goodloe Harper, but I have found this (according to the Goodloe papers) to be incorrect. William and Nancy had Isaac, Polly, Letty, Dicey, Sarah, Henderson, John and Reese. I have additional info on Polly but not of the othe siblings. I have a book on Jesse's descendants. Hope this info helps.

I have Harpers on my father's side, and the name "Charles," in particular, is a common one in my Harper families. Any geographic reference points would be helpful - I'll see if I can help. Other family members' names, locations, also of great assistance.

Best of luck,

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN

My 2004 post seems to have been expunged, but I assume that I was suggesting that all male Harpers get YDNA tested to check for matches in the Harper YDNA project.

Lot Harper 1781-1866 and Mariam Whitaker 1786-1824

Hello all: I just started researching this branch of my tree and ran into a problem. According to the marriage record at http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=worldmarr_ga&a... Lot and Mariam were married in 1804, not 1824. I started wondering when I saw that Mariam had died in 1824, yet she started giving birth to the first of her many children in 1805. Looks like he may have married a second wife in 1824, maybe there lies the problem. Just wanted to touch base in case anyone else was running into a similar roadblock. Cheers, Melody
