Hi there I am also descended from Pakinui and William Harpur and have spent many years researching the Harpur tree if you haven't already seen it there is a book in the local libray (NZ) called "From County Cork to the Colonies" The Harpur family tree, you might find some additional info in your quest to find more about your tree.

Re Uncle Michael. I now know that he died off Calcutta, not Montevideo as I fist thought. He was on a platform at side of the ship. It slipped and he went in the Hoogly River. There are Bull sharks in the area and they could not save him. There was a piece in the local Wexford paper. It was October 1908.

Hi Angela

That is correct. I am the great grand daughter of Isaac and Mary, via their daughter, Laura Jane (m Cyril Albert Pratt).

They did move to Cobar from Wellington, then back to Sydney in later life. Mary died at Marrickville and Isaac at Granville. I have a wonderful photo of Mary and Isaac with my mother when she was a young woman.

Thanks for the information. I have really only stated looking at Harpur-Sullivan connection in the past 48 hours, so you information is helpful.

Gloria

Hi and thanks for replying.

Hanoria Sullivan was the daughter of Cornelius Sullivan, a convict from Ireland transported in 1820, and Mary Farrell, a free settler. I am descended from their eldest son Philip James, his daughter Mary Jane Sullivan, and her son Clem Quinn.

I know Mary married Isaac Frazer so you must be descended through one of their ten children.

I have made contact with another descendent of Hanoria Sullivan who has told me the Frazers moved to Cobar and then eventually to Marrickville.

It's great to hear from another family member - the more the merrier. I am leaving today for 3 weeks holidays so if you reply to this don't be offended if you don't get an immediate reply!

Thanks once again, regards

Angela

My gt.uncle Michael Harpur, born 1874c was killed in an accident off Montevideo in 1907. He was on a platform over the side of the ship, when the platform tilted and he fell in the sea. There were sharks around and he could not be rescued. I would be interested if anyone has more information. I believe he was a Merchant Seaman. Anne

Thank you for your reply - much appreciated. I did have all of this (as found on other trees in Ancestry).

A bit of a mystery her offspring with Joseph as three children born prior to her marriage to Joseph in 1814, ie Elizabeth 1808, Joseph J 1810 and Charles Chidley 1813. Of course her marriage to John Welsh/Walsh in 1847 had her being a step mum to his four children, ie Ellen 1839, Bridget 1840, Catherine 1843 and John 1845.

We often have a child born prior to a marriage or just after but never three!!!

All I have on Sarah's parents is that they were Joseph bc1760 England and Betty Hembrow bc1766 Ash Priors married 25 Dec 1809 and having siblings William and Elizabeth.

Regards
Sue

Thank you for your prompt response and the news that your grandfather came from Co. Wexford. Whilst our scant records state that my grandmother was born in Dublin, we do know that she lived in Co. Wexford. She married my grandfather in Wexford in 1906. They came to Australia afterwards.

From your message and what we know there is a reasonable possibility that we are related for the following reasons. We think that she lived in Co. Wexford because she was related to the Harpurs there, and my grandmother also spoke of relatives who were into tin mining in South Africa.

Do you have a family tree for your grandfather which shows a sibling by the name(s) of Mary or May born around 1879 and any possible cross-referencing to Pettigrews or Lyne.

Cheers again

Jill,

I am trying to find details of my grandermother Mary (May) Harpur. She came to Australia around 1909-10 and settled with my grandfather Alexander Pettigrew (he was born 1880 in Ennsicorthy). I believe she had previously been married to a Jonathan James Lyne (Dr). She had 3 children prior to leaving Ireland (they were all deceased - names Mabel, Eileen and Jack). Her place of birth may have been Dublin (not sure).

Do you know of Harpur's in Wexford/Enniscorthy area having a daughter born about 1879 -80. She was a good musician and singer. Thanks and cheers from Canberra.

Hello Frik,

I am just looking for info on my Irish ancestors and came across your message. My great grandfather was Alexander Pettigrew (married Jessie Hutchinson Chapman). He owned and ran a coal and butter business at Templeshannon Quay (near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford). Their son, my grandfather, also Alexander came to Australia with my grandmother May (Mary?) Harpur around 1910. May talked of relatives in South Africa who I believe we tin miners. May was married prior to meeting my grandfather - I believe to a doctor. May was very musical, could play several instruments and sang. Does any of my info relate to what you know of the Harpurs of Co. Wexford.

Thanks Jennifer

Hi, what is the name of your grandparents or great grand parents? I don't think we are related as I believe I have traced all remaining living family members. There were several Harpur families from Wexford Town.

Dear All,

I am tracing Harpums and a relative has suggested that the surname could be a variation of Harp Harpur or Harper due to in olden days people playing the Harp. I am looking for a John and Mary Harpum who had a George Langley Harpum born jan 1803 christened mar 1803 in Rochester St Nicholas in Kent ENGLAND. Does anyone have any of these names with spelling variations?????

Cheers sarah

Re: Harpur South Africa

Harpur is a surname associated in Ireland almost
exclusively with the south east corner of County
Wexford. Included in this area are the two baronies
of Forth and Bargy where a dialect of 13th Century
Norman English was spoken until approx. 1850.
The surname 'Harpur' is 'de Harpur' in this dialect -
indicating the Norman influence. Where did the surname
originate? Probably in Derby in England. One of the
the first English Barons was a Robert Le Harpur, (1227 or
thereabouts) andit seems likely that his offspring arrived in the Norman
ecnlcave of Sout East Wexford either shortly before or
with the second wave
of Norman incursion. After the first invasion, through
Bannow in Wexford, the Normans largely focused on
the ports of Waterford and Dubin as access points.

Another wave of Normans largely bypassed Wexford as a result, and the two baronies were left to develop their
own unique Norman-Irish heritage.

Harpur larlgey died out as a surname in England in the
1550's (thereabouts) when the last male Harpur married
into the Crewe family.

They are my mother's half-siblings.

Both were born in the 1940s. Their mother was Elizabeth (Millen/Fleeton/or Harpur).

Perre Constance (Connie)(surname unknown) had two or three children, one of whom was born in Belfast around 1967, possibly called Simon. Last contact was with Constance in late 1960s in Liverpool.

Trying to make contact but need more details for a search. Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much. My email address is on my profile but I won't post it on open message boards - you can guess why,I expect.

I am intrigued by the name Singleton - it has to have some special significance, one that I'd have thought was family based, yet, 'my' Harpur seems not to be part of 'yours', though I know the time frame's not the same. Strange.
Alternative method of transmission maybe - post on -
http://ourmissinglinks.proboards83.com/.
