"Robert Harriss" received a 50-acre land grant 21 Aug 1798 in Patrick County. The grant is silent on where the land is, or who are adjoining neighbors, if any. No idea where this land lays.
Samuel Harris received a 51-acre land grant 16 Dec 1799, for land in Patrick Co. It is located on Jacks Creek. Jacks creek is a stream which rises in the Blue Ridge [near Conners Spur]. It flows southeasterly into the head waters of the Smiths River.
There is one earlier grant to a Samuel Harris, but dates back to 1766 when the area was Halifax County. It was for 160-acres on Spoon Creek. This grant is somewhere in the lower southeastern corner of what is now Patrick County. Given the early date, and the few settlers in the area at the time, it is probably very close to the Henry county line, and near the Mayo River.
A James Harris received a 60-acre grant (and probably same man) a 85-acre grant in the mid-1790s. Both grants were for land on the south branches of North Mayo River, in Patrick County. This would place them within a days ride by horse, from the previously mentioned Spoon Creek property. The 85 acre tract adjoined Moses Reynolds on the north, and Benjamin Spencer on the south side. Spencer's land straddled Greys fork of North Mayo River. Any Reynolds or Spencer wives names in the family ?
All I can help you with at this time. If you ever find out who Elizabeth Welch was, please post it. Thanks in advance for anything that turns up
