Re: Peyton Randolph Harrison (1767-1811)

I am a descendant of Peyton Randolph Harrison and Elizabeth Mease Barclay, and I have quite a bit of information on them, as I have been working on their line for years.

There are hundreds of descendants in this line!

First off, Peyton is listed in some older genealogy books as having died in 1811, but he did not, he died in 1845 and has a will probated in Christian Co., KY. He only had two surviving children then, both his heirs, youngest son Robert Peyton Harrison and daughter Louisa Ann (Harrison) Caldwell (she actually was married to two Caldwells).

The Logan County, KY, Genealogical Society has quite a bit on our Harrisons, as many of them stayed there in Russellville, some of whom live there to this day.

All their surviving children were born at "Clifton," the Harrison family plantation at Cartersville, Cumberland Co., VA. In 1809, the family moved to KY, first to Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY, then to Russellville, Logan Co., KY. It appears that after Elizabeth's death in 1832 and sometime before his own death in 1845, Peyton moved to Christian Co., KY, where his youngest son, Robert Peyton Harrison, was living.

I have no record of descendants for the following children of Peyton and Elizabeth, several dying very young:

Thomas Barclay Harrison, b. 1795, d. before 1832
Robert Carter Harrison, b. 1800, d. 1803
Peyton Randolph Harrison, b. 1803, d. 1804

Those who have descendants:

Eleanor Susanna Harrison (1797 - bef 1824) married Benjamin Wroe Edwards and had two sons.

Carter Henry Harrison II (1798-1829) married Margaret Henry Edwards and had five children and many living descendants.

Louisa Ann Harrison (1805-1880) married first David Caldwell, then his nephew, Austin Caldwell. She had children by both, and one son from each marriage lived to have descendants.

Robert Peyton Harrison, b. 1807 in VA, d. 1885 in TX, was married three times and had at least 14 children - at least that's the number I've been able to locate. He moved quite a bit, Ky, Illinois, Missouri, back to two counties in KY, and finally to Texas in 1851, where he lived in at least 3 counties. Tracking this ancestor has been my genealogical hobby for the last 12 years - you can see why he has kept me entertained! There are hundreds of living descendants of his at present, many still in Texas. I am descended from his first wife, Almira Clemetina Wilcox, b. 1810 in KY and died there in 1847 (after a lot of moving but before his last move to Texas).

I have quite a few references, many primary documents, and I cannot find your William Henry Harrison or Ernest Duvall Harrison among them. Your WHH is not one of Peyton and Elizabeth's children; these are well documented in a large collection of Elizabeth's letters to her sister in law back at "Clifton" after they moved to KY. And your WHH is the wrong age to be a grandchild of Peyton and Elizabeth's.

I wish you good luck with your Harrison hunt! I'd suggest to start by looking in the counties where they lived. Local genealogical societies have amazing resources and family files, most of which will never make it to the internet.

Hi Randa,

I have nine sons for William Henry Harrison as follows:

Braxton Harrison born 1750
Collier Harrison born 1750

Both of the above are the sons of Elizabeth Collier (1737-1755) who was born in Charles City County, VA and died there.

Mary Wallace is the second wife whom he married in 1756. I have seven sons listed for her as follows: Benj., Reuben, Carter, Vincent, Spencer, Geo., and William. Your Jesse born in 1791 seems a stretch since his mother would have been at least 55. It is a possibility that Jesse is a grandson of Robert Henry Harrison and Mary Wallace.

My relationship is through my 3rd Great Aunt Margaret Pitts born 1768 in Essex/Caroline Co., VA. who married Spencer Harrison born 1755. I haven't been able to find any children for this couple. They are possible parents for your Jesse. What do you think?

John Brock Harrison

Hello everyone. I am trying to locate information on a John Brock Harrison born according to what little info that I can find circa 1778/80 in Berkely (don't have a clue if they mean county or the home) He married Martha Hawkins and had several children in Virginia, While traveling to Texas to do some survey work for the US, Martha became ill and was left in TN with the Sharp family who had also moved from VA to TN. 3 of the Harrison girls married Sharp boys and eventually made their way into Mississippi. I know that John didn't just appear, but I can find nothing to give me any info on his family. As with lots of Harrisons we have the tales of being connected to the Presidents, etc....if you are from this area and can't link your family to the Harrisons or Robert E. Lee, you just arn't a true southerner!! I appreciate any direction that you can point me in... Thanks, Marilyn

I have info on a William M. Harrison from Wilkinson County, Georgia, born in 1877. He is the son of William Green Harrison and Nancy Goodson McKenzie Harrison. William M. married Effie Ann Pryor.

The father of William Green Harrison, according to my info, is Williamson Harrison, 1 December 1814, who married Amanda Elizabaeth Prior.
Williamson's father was James Harrison who married Delaney Justice.

My interest in this family is in James's daughter Martha, great-aunt of William M. I am trying to find documentation that she married Nathaniel J. Robertson. They were in Georgia before moving to Butler County. My Martha was born 23 September 1811.

I will be happy to share the info that I have on William M.'s family. Others may have more data which I hope they will put on the List.

Freda Roberson Noble
Gualala Ca

Joseph Harrison c1780-1848) of Stockport, England

I am seeking information on the Harrison Family of Stockport. Joseph Harrison (c1780-1848) was a schoolmaster at the "Harrison's Academy" at Mount Street in Stockport (from at least 1835). Joseph Harrison was married to Sally Hanson? (born c1780 Halifax, Yorkshire) and they had two children: Betsy born Saddleworth, Yorkshire c1812 and Thomas born Glossopdale, Derbyshire 1815. It is possible Thomas was baptized at the Littlemoor Chapel (Independent) at Glossop. Also possible that his father Joseph was pastor there from 1812-1819. Thomas married Elizabeth Collier (b. 1825 Stockport) in 1841 (non-conformist marriage) and he was also a schoolmaster at the Harrison's Academy and later an Insurance Agent (Scottish Amicable Life), he was also Real Estate Agent. Thomas went on to have seven children with Elizabeth. I am descended from his son Joseph b. 1853 who migrated to Australia with wife Fanny Maria Holland and son John Thomas in 1879.

I'm trying to work out whether my ancester Joseph Harrison was the same man who was arrested and gaoled for 3 years for sedition in 1820 for his part in speeches made as part of the Radical Reform Movement alongside Sir Charles Wolseley at Sandy Brow in Stockport. I found an entry in Cobbett's Weekly Political Register of 1820 which covered the trial in some detail and indicates that: "Harrison, until lately, was a stranger in the county of Chester, and is described in the indictment as a schoolmaster; he formerly settled in Derbyshire, but was a resident at the time he committed the offence." I also found from the Surman list that J. Harrison was ordained at Littlemoor Chapel in Glosssop in 1814 and ceased work there by 1819. (possibly to move to Stockport?)

Is this just coincidence or could it be the same man?

Does anyone have any information of J. Harrison records from Chester Gaol around 1820-1823?

Any other information about the family is welcome.

Thankyou Anthony

I do not a lot about Lucy. She was my great grandmother and I have a photo of her holding me in December 1950, when I was born or shortly there after. She live to be over 100 years old and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cem. in Ft. Worth Texas. Her husband James Henry Harrison is buried in TN. They still have several grandchildren living in the Ft. Worth, TX area. James Henry Harrison, Katherine Harrison Spradley, and Sue Harrison Greer. I could not find anything on Lucy's family, but she told stories of being born or raised in Cedartown, Georgia. She remembered seeing the smoke from Atlanta burning. She had 3 children that out lived her. James Andrew Harrison (my grandfather and her youngest), Lizzy Harrison Schoultz, and Leslie Harrison Arnold. Would love to hear more about where your husband fits into the family.
