My name is Janette Kaplan, daughter of Judy Harrod, granddaughter of Lonnie and Willie (Jappee) Harrod. His dad was Edwin Harrod, his dad was William Harrod and his dad was James Harrod who came from London to New York in 1857.

One of the members of the Hitt family has done a very nice genealogy page.http://hitt_genealogy.homestead.com/files/hardl0001.htm#id18...

I'm looking for more family info and connections. Especially on

JAMES1 HARROD (5184) was born on 25 Apr 1801 at England. He married Sarah Barnes (5185) at England. He died on 25 Feb 1891 at Doniphan, Hall Co., Nebraska, at age 89. He was buried after 25 Feb 1891 at Cedar View Cemetery, Doniphan, Hall Co., Nebraska.
He James according to the Harrod family Bible had about 22 children. Not all children have been named or proven. Sarah Barns I believe was James second wife some children were from the first wife. I am not sure which belonged to whom. He was a farmer, James and Sarah farmed in Winnebago County, Illinois. He immigrated on 31 Aug 1857; from London England with wife and six children.

Hi Helen,
Martha Harrod was also my great grandmother and the story of the connection to Harrods in London is still talked about in the family. I have done extensive research and can find no connection at all. Martha's father William was left a pub (or at least he took it over when his father died). That was the Wheatsheaf in Rettendon, Essex. He had no brother called Charles as far as I can see and I have an email from the great great grandson of Charles Henry Harrod (the founder of Harrods) which does not show any possible connection with the Rettendon Harrods. If you have any further information that may help I would love to hear from you.
Which of Martha's children are you descended from?
I am the grandson of William, Martha's eldest child.
I have alot of information on the Harrod families, some confirmed and not confirmed. I also have some on the Slattery's. I know Ramona Slattery has more. My great aunt Melissa Hutcherson married James Albert Slattery son of Dennis and Sarah Blankenship Slattery, and John Slattery married Sarah Huchison/Hutcherson which is my great-great-great-aunt. John according to Ramona was killed running from the law and was killed in the railroad tunnel in downtown Frankfort, KY. She said there is a newspaper article about his death in 8-1-1871. They had one daughter Mary Magdaline who died in 1873. Sarah never remarried and died in 1912. I have John father as James Slattery from County Clare, Ireland and married Mary Elizabeth Harrod, but have not confirmed the information. Been working on other families.

My grandmother said I needed to talk to Oscar, but I didn't make the time and he passed soon after she told me.

Merry Christmas

Michael D. My grandfather was Oscar Cook Slattery.

Sarah Ellen's father was Albert Blankenship (b. 1822, d 1862) and her mother was Mary Waits (b. 1857, d. ?).
Thank you so much for your response. Since I posted this inquiry I was able to obtain additional information about Rosa from my aunt. Your information is consistent with what my aunt provided.

Rosa was born 27 Aug 1883, eleventh of thirteen children, and died 27 Nov. 1902. She does also show up in the 1900 census as wife of Marcus Nash (father of my grandmother). Her father is indeed John B. Harrod (b. 24 Dec 1843, d. 13 Dec 1918) and her mother Nancy Ellen Pulliam (b. 4 Mar 1847, d. 4 Feb 1921). Rosa died when my grandmother was six months old. My grandmother is not 106, still living in Frankfort, Ky.

I recalled many stories about my grandmother being raised by her father and her grandmother after her mother's death but couldn't find the details so I started asking family members and was able to piece the information. My aunt Ramona also confirmed the burial locations that you cited.

I thank you so much for your assistance and willingness to share what information you have. Hopefully, your helping me now will confirm the information you have as well.

Warm regards and Merry Christmas.
Scott Slattery
Scottsdale, Arizona

Re: Rosa Frances Harrod

Zaxax, What I do have on Rosa Frances Harrod is that she was born Aug 27, 1883 and died Nov 27, 1902. She is buried in the Lebanon Baptist Church Graveyard in northwestern Franklin County, Kentucky near the Shelby County line. Her stone lists her as the wife of Marcus Nash. and Marcus was born May 5, 1881 and died Feb 19, 1931, His second wife is also buried with them, she is Charles Edna Nash, born Nov 27, 1897 and died Apr 23, 1915. I have not linked Rosa to a family since she falls in bewteen the 1890 census and died before Kentucky made death certifiate recordable in 1911. Ms. Goebeline Harrod-Singleton, her father was Geoble Harrod gave me her information about the work she was doing and I have been trying to confirm her information.

Geobeline has Rosa's father as John B. Harrod and mother as Nancy E. Pulliam, I have her listed as Mrs. Nancy Lee. I have not been able to confirm that they are the same person. Also I need to find an obituary that may list Rosa in it and then I can place her under John B. Harrod. If you are aware unfortunately there are a lot of John Harrod's in Franklin County and it can be frustrating trying to connect families.

Please email me for more info at MHutche229@aol.com

Amelia's Harrod mother was, I have been led to believe, disowned by the family for running off and marrying a spanish sea captain - last name Aylen.

Do you have a connection to Richard Harwood of Anne Arundel County, MD? My Samuel Lane was deeded land (Hookers Purchase) there in 1701 along with Richard Harwood. (Abstracts of Land Records AA Co., MD Vol. 2) The grantee was Thomas Harwood, Richard's father. I sense that Harrow/Harwood are the same family. Were the Lanes and Harwoods linked at that time? Thomas was then living in Streatly, Berkshire, England.

Hugh Leslie Harrod b.1871 Lima, Allen, OH and Callie Belle Harrod Blank b. 1875 in , Auglaize, OH,were the youngest 2 children of the 6 or 7 children of Miner Harrod and Phoebe Ann Faulkner of Lima, Allen, OH, and the only ones to live beyond mid-20th century. Hugh Leslie Harrod d. 1952 in Downers Grove, Dupage, IL, and Callie Belle Harrod Blank d. 1962 in LIma, Allen, OH. Hugh Leslie Harrod is the only Harrod of whom I know a little, and I learned of Callie Belle by following Hugh Leslie back through the census records. Perhaps, though, you are only looking for Calle Belle Blank's descendants?

The relationship between Harrodsburg's founder James Harrod and Miner Harrod's children would be distant. James Harrod was an uncle of Hugh Leslie's & Callie Belle's 2Xgreat-grandfather Levi Harrod. I too thought there was a closer connection between the Lima, OH Harrods and the founder of Harrodsburg, KY but found it was not so.

Does anyone know of a Harrod family story involving the Oklahoma Land Rush? I was told that a man and wife handed a baby to a family, said they'd be right back and then took off into the land rush. The man and wife never came back. I don't remember if it was said that they died in the trampling or not. The family adopted the baby and raised him as a Harrod. I think the Harrod husband was a doctor. This is all I know of the story. Thanks!
Christy

William and James Herrod/Harrod/Herod of the Watauga Settlement of East Tennesee

The James Herod/Harrod/Herrod who was born in Stafford County, VA, in 1738 left the Watauga Settlement (near Knoxville and Kingsport, TN, being part of the first settlement in TN) with the original pioneers who migrated to Nashville in 1779-1780. James was killed by Indians by 1783, when his wife remarries Daniel Hogan, who administered the estate. In estate filings in Cumberland Court Records, Daniel mentions that James had a cow follow him on the journey and that he still had another cow back in Watauga.

From Genealogical Records: Early Tennessee Settlers, 1700s-1900s on genealogy.com; Tombstone Inscriptions and Manuscripts, Historical Information is an article by Mrs. Rhea Garrett, "The Fort Blount Road to Cumberland" published about 1931, in which she describes the early settlers and explorers from the Watauga Settlement who explored across the Cumberland Gap. It included the following statement: "Wm. Herod of Stafford County, VA. supposed brother or close relation of James, of Harrodsburg fame [note: probably mistaken for the James who went to Nashville]; his son Peter, tradition says, was General Washington's godson."

In the 1820 census of Tennessee, were the following Herrods (note spelling was Herrod): (from Smith County) William, Sen., James, Levi, and Peter; (from Bedford County) Reuben and Whitmel; and (from Franklin County) Rachel. All of these spelled their names as Herrod. Most of the descendants have spelled the name as Herrod or Herod.

Smith County is between Nashville and Knoxville, so the presumed brother must have also left the Watauga Settlement and moved westward. Maybe some of his descendants have more information. It's so sad that there are no census records surviving for TN or VA for 1790, 1800 and 1810, since they would tell us what we need to know about Herrod/Herod residents of eastern TN.

I've found Peter as an old man in the 1850 census of Smith County, and he indicated he was born in VA. Smith County may have some records, so maybe someone knows more about this family. Please provide more information, if you have any.

I have circumstantial evidence to show that James Harrod/Herrod of Nashville had an unnamed daughter Nancy, who married my gggg grandfather John Parchman/Parchment about 1795.
I've recently got down to work on the Harrods in my tree research, and am working on descendants of Clifton and Dora (Naus) Harrod. I noticed the brief discussion here, and would like to see if I could locate some living descendants on this line, which I am tracing from the Bitler line in Pennsylvania.

I have some undocumented sources indicating that in addition to Jesse, Vona, and Edna, there were also Elmer C Harrod (d.19 Mar 1891), Unknown Harrod (d.12 Feb 1899), W. H. Harrod, and I have confirmed sources indicating the youngest son, Richard B. Harrod (b.17 Aug 1901 d.4 Oct 1977).

Cifton Harrod m. Dora Naus, daughter of Charles and Imelda (Metz) Naus, son of Holly and Susan (Bitler) Naus, daughter of Samuel and Catherine (?) Bitler, son of John and Maria (Wolff) Bitler, son of Johannes and Hannah (Long) Bitler, whom we believe to be the original German immigrant who died in Robeson Twp, Berks Co, PA in 1790.

-Glenn
