Among my mother's things, after her death, I found an old postcard addressed to my great grandmother Phebe Jane Schouten McCord. It is from her neice Rella Harshman who is living in Sullivan, Illinois. The postcard states: "Dear Aunt Jennie". Phebe was called Jennie because she was named for her grandmother. There is no date on the card. There is a picture of an old church on the front of the card and a one cent stamp is attached. I would be happy to send a copy to anyone that wants it and would appreciate anyone's imput between the Schouten/McCord/Harshman connection. Thank you!

I've done a little digging into the Harshman Family off and on. I haven't been able to find anything past my g-g grandparents and siblings for my g and g-g grandparents and other family. There are tons of Harshmans and I've heard of the books but wasn't sure if we are all related somehow.

If anyone could please help me out to see if the names are listed or has started any work on my side of the Harshmans would be great. I know it's alot of work to find family I don't want to burden anyone with wanting a huge list of names so names of g-g-g- greats are fine with me.

their 7 children:
Jeremiah b. 4/7/1872 Lillie A. b 1874 Sina Ellen b 1878 (One child was B&D bef 1883) Mattie b. 8/20/1883 Lula b. 4/15/1887 George ? Jacob b. 8/27/1895

Mattie is the line I'm working on, Mattie dies I believe in Zanesville, Oh abt 12/1975, now that I see your post I'm guessing she must have moved to be with her sister.

Trying to locate any information on William Harshman that married Asilla Closser. Asilla (b. 1833 Ohio) was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (Lippincott) Closser.

Asilla had 2 sisters: Mary (b. 1830) (Cohee) and Delina (b. 1835 Ohio).
I am a descendant of Mary Closser Cohee. Trying to find out what happened to Mary's sisters.

Would appreciate information about Charles Harshman that is listed on the 1900 and 1910 census in Garden City, Finney County, Kansas.

Charles had three children; Lena 1892, Mayme 1894 and Frank 1898. Wife, Jennie is on the 1900 and her father, Reuben Haley 1829, is living with them. On the 1910, Charles is listed as widowed and the three children are living with him. have been unable to find him on the 1920 census.

Will share the information that I have.

The person who let me read it, had just came across it in a box of things her grandfather had put away. She mentioned she would love to find a "Family Member" to send them a copy. This family lived in Vermillion County, Indiana. I do not have any of the vital statistics for Lennice Harshman. I am able to supply information about the SHELBY line but need help with the Harshmans.

Barbara, are you descended from Margaret Zellers Harshman and Isaac Harshman who were married in Preble Co., Ohio Oct. 30, 1823? Their son, Joseph Harshman was a victim of the Indian Massacre at Spirit Lake in Dickinson Co. IA in March, 1857. Their daughter, Martha Ann Harshman, married Jesse Addington. She and Jesse and their family were in Boone Co., IA in 1860. Margaret Harshman, 55, and son Jacob, 21, were living with them in 1860. Do you know where Isaac Harshman was in 1860?

I am looking for the names of the parents of Joseph Harshman. They built a cabin in Emmet County, IA in 1856. Their son, Joseph Harshman, was killed in the Spirit Lake Massacre in 1857 when he went to Dickinson Co., IA to obtain flour.

Found on Vol 2 of Harshman Family History & Genealogy pages 705,706, 707.712 & 713 is the data collected and published in 1976 on the specific folks you mantioned. A few up dates in the 1995 VOl 3. The entire ancestry back 6 or 7 generations is also available in the 3 Vol Set.

Not sure if someone already provided you with the info privately in the past three years, and do not want to take time to repeat if not needed, but in case you have not heard anything then you might want to know that the data is readily available and that the authors of the set of books have done a lot of your groundwork already. [It was a lifetime effort on the part of the three people, authors, to make it easy for us late arrivals].

The author of the History and Genealogy of the Harshman Family, Mavoureen Harshman, will provide the three volumn set directly to requestors, by mail. She is not on the internet. Her address is 2710 Cedar Street, Berkeley, CA. The cost for the three book set of nearly 2000 pages and indexes was $80.00, the last time I spoke to her, with shipping included. As far as I know she has the whole printing at her home and the books are not available elsewhere. These books tell the whole story of the Harshman settlement group of 1751 from Gemmingen, now in Germany. Vol 3 includes the authors' research from Europe and their findings. Reality is there were not 4 brothers but rather a father with his younger children and several of his older adult sons and their families who arrived together in 1751 - and updates info and data originally published in the first two books 20 years earlier.
Your Samuel B. Harshman and wife, Gertrude Hillen Clites are shown on page 565 of Vol. 2 and then in the 1995 update, Vol 3, on pages 307 & 308. Their ancestors are all deliniated back 6 [or more] generations throughout the books.

my grandfather was samuel harshman married to gertrude hillen and resided in fayette county pa. they had several children...samuel, weldon 'jack', urda 'minnie' , and margaret.
both grandparents are deceased and so are samuel and weldon. it has always been told we are decendents of 4 brothers who came over from germany. iI do not have anyother information.

Mavourneen Harshman, co-author of the Harshman volumes, is the daughter of Walter and Jennie Harshman, and lived in Indianapolis. Mavourneen has one older sister, Lucile, and a younger sister, Anna, both living. Another sister, Gloria, is deceased, as well as another sister, Katherine who died at a very young age. (I'm Mavourneen's niece).

When i was looking up my mother-in-law, Ruth Elizabeth Harshman, I notice that they had left out one of her children's names and that they had her brother, Roy harshman as living. He is deceased.

Ruth Elizabeth Harshman was married to Verner Olaf Lundberg. Her mother was Anna Fogh and her father was Eugene Harshman. Ruth was born June 06, 1901 nad is still living. Ruth and Verner's children are: Charlotte Ruth, Verner Eugene, Norman Wayne,AND Doris Louise. Doris was the child left out. I don't know if this can be corrected or how to go about it. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks!

The father of the child abandoned the same about 1 year ago and does not contribute to their support. The father and mother are divorced. Adoption is granted and the child is to be known as Beatrice Harshman.

Pearle Soule was my Great Grandmother making Beatrice my Great Half Aunt and would love to know what happened to her and any family she may have had. So far I have not been able to obtain any other information it is like after the adoption these people fell of the face of the earth.

Searching for the family of Fletcher and Lilly Harshman and son John Charles Harshman who was born in St. Paul MN 1909
Family stories say Fletcher and his brothers (John D. ?) came to the U.S from Germany in the
eary 1800's. John D. Harshman homesteaded 160 acres in Colorado in 1910. Some say the spelling of Harshman was Harschman.

are wonderful jumping off points to lead you in, hopefully, the right direction, but please do not accept the info as gospel. Find your proofs. Col and Mrs Harshman (who, by the way, is a wonderful and warm person) did the best they could, but we found a number of errors in our line, starting with our grandfather. Col Harshman is no longer living, and Mrs. Mauvorneen says she has no interest in writing anymore of the books - nor is she going to correct them. She does collect information, though, to someday pass on to someone else who may be interested in writing a book, or someone trying to find an ancestor not in the book.

Seeking information on Sylvester Cotton and Sarah Harsman. Both born in Trumbull County, Ohio and married there on 18 Oct. 1855. Then moved to Ossian, Wells County, Indiana. Sylvester entered the Union cause in the Civil War with the Company A of the 34th Indiana Volunteers and died young in 1878. Sarah lived until 6 June 1917. I am researching the Cotton Family and am looking for information on Sylvester, Sarah and their offspring.
