Their father was killed in the Civil War; and their mother married Harrison Hartley. I have had contact with a decendent of John Jefferson, but not the other two. May

I just ran across a genealogy typed by my father. On the cover sheet he very clearly typed "Carl EdmUnd Hartley", cap U for emphasis only. His father was Edmond Compton Hartley.

Sorry, folks, I got it turned around when I first started my tree.

Please be sure to correct your entries, Dad was very adamant about the spelling.

Cheers

My grandmother had traced it before she passed away but on of the other grandchildren got ahold of it so I have to start my own search. I am real interested in the roots in Germany,England and we can exchange what information I have from here if you would like. My grandparents are Gilbert F. Hartley & Lucille Hayes Hartley. Great Grandmother Cora Beck Hartley she married Benjamin Hartley. Lisa Hartley Hughes email address: angelangelpup@att.net

Hi Annette

It appears we are researching the same family! Nathaniel Hartley Naylor (1827/1831) is my mum's great grandfather.
She remembers Doris Hartley-Naylor and has met Wendy Maskell at a family do sometime between 1966 and 1973.
She also seems to remember someone called Roy coming to live with them because he was born out of wedlock and he was shunted around a bit. Don't know if this rings any bells with you??

Regards

Mark Swann

Apologies - a slight revision on my previous mail, there are a number of Melvilles in the family and I confused them. My great grandmother was born Melville Harknot Gregory and married as Melville Harnett (becoming Meville Smart) Her mother was Jane Gregory and she was the niece of Melville Hartley nee Gregory. You probably know already that Melville Hartley was the daughter of Thomas Gregory and Melville Hicks.

GW

Also what info do you have on William Wheeler other than he was from Berkely County, VA; born 1794 and died 1856? Do you know where William Wheeler died? Where did William Wheeler live or have census record information?

Sandy Hansen (hansenms@me.com)
Iowa

Intrigued!!! YES, after reading the postings found under the following:
Arthur "Bid" Hartley; born Ohio, lived in Buffalo, NY area -- 4/26/2009
Re: James Hartley born March 1825, VA or OH -- 4/26/2009
Re: Hartley, Moved from Va to Ohio and Indiana mid 1800's -- 4/26/2009
Hartley in Miami County, Ohio -- 2/2/2009
Re: Hartley -- 12/2/2008

MY RESEARCH INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
According to the 1850 Ohio Monroe County, Union Townshp census, James (my great great grandfather) was married to Mary (BORN IN IRELAND) with 2 sons ages 3 and 2. James is listed as being born in OH and cannot read or write. However, in the 1860 census, Noble County, Marion Towsnhip, OH it stated born in VA and age 36 with 4 children. The age of daughter Louisa is 18 and is incorrect; it should read 8.

In 1868, James and Mary (surname maybe Whittington) traveled with 3 or 4 children: Charles, William, and Louisa to Mercer County, MO. The oldest son Erasmus (name misspelled in 1860 census - Rosensau) did not settle in Missouri but traveled on to San Francisco, CA, stage coach driver according to 1970 census Mercer County, Lindley Township, MO.

WHAT IS INTERESTING IS James and Mary's only daughter and youngest child is named LOUISA.

James and Mary continued living in Mercer County, MO. According to the 1880 Mercer County, MO census, they are living with my great grandfather, William and Permelia Hartley. However, the wives names are transposed in the census records.

James' wife Mary dies in 1881. ACCORDING TO THE IOWA DECATUR COUNTY, MORGAN TOWNSHIP CENSUS, James is living with his daughter LOUISA and husband Lilburn Johnson and their children. Information I know - Louisa and family moved to Watonga, OK (date unknown). James went down to visit, became ill, died and is buried near Watonga, OK. BUT, I have been unsuccessful in locating James' death record or burial place in Watonga, OK or in Mercer County, MO.

ONE CANNOT RULE OUT that your Louisa Hartley Athy may be connected. It's possible that James named his daughter after his sister Louisa Hartley Athy.

OTHER INFORMATION that has been passed on (no documentation proof) is: James' mother was a single teenager and he was raised by his wealthy grandfather and kept the Hartley name.

Would very much like to visit with you and anyone else with information on James.

Sandy Hansen
hansenms@me.com

Carol and TIM,

Thank you for your reply. I agree the Hartley family is elusive.

My research centers around the areas of: Bucks County,PA > perhaps Maryland > West Virginia / Virginia (Morgan County) > Ohio (-1850 & 1860s in Monroe, Noble County; perhaps Belmont and Muskingum Counties) > Mercer County, Missouri.

One cannot help but believe the Hartley families in Morgan County,WV are not all connected somehow. I looking for a teenage daughter in the time frame of 1822 to 1825.

I welcome contact by anyone with leads or information about James Hartley's mother and grandparents supposedly born March 1825, according to Iowa 1900 Census; however, the year or/and month could vary. Since James was raised by his grandfather, there is no information available on his father.

Sincerely,
Sandy Hansen
Iowa

Uriah Hartley, son of William Hartley, and grandson of Revolutionary War soldier Daniel Hartley who is buried in Clark Co., IN was Viola's grandfather.

Clarence and William Hartley were very good friends of my dad and used to visit our home in Warrick Co., IN quite often. One of the Hartley boys used to officiat some of my basketball games back in the 50's when I played for Newburgh High School and in fact one time presented me with the game ball. I kept that ball many years hoping to get his signature on it?

If I remember right, you and I are about the same age, now approaching the nathional average for male deaths in this country. Pleasent thought isn't it?

Hello again, Sandy -

So sorry that it has taken me so long to respond to your message. I've had a lot of irons in the fire lately.

So far, the results of my research on my Hartley group indicate that they were all born in what is today Morgan County, WV. It has been difficult to find their parents but I'm playing on a hunch that their father's name was John and that John's father's name was John, also. This has been a very elusive group!

Other indications are that some Hartley lines from WV point to lineages in Maryland and Pennsylvania before that, although I don't yet have any proof of it for my line.

My Hartley group left the then Virginia, now WV, for Miami County, Ohio in 1849. I have found documentation of that in the Tipp City Historical Society (museum) in Tipp City, Ohio, the closest town to where they settled. Some became rural farmers, others became prominent citizens and public servants of Tipp City.

For you, my hunch is that your group might be more closely related to the Hartley group of Belmont County, Ohio; a county just northeast of Monroe County.

I doubt that this information has helped you with your research but if I happen across anything that might aid you, I'll be sure to pass it along.

Best regards,
Tim Trochelman

Hello, my name is Tim Trochelman. I am descended from Arthur John Hartley. Arthur appears in Miami County, Ohio at the same time, or nearly the same time as other Hartleys, including James Hartley. I have not been able to connect all of these Hartleys to the same parents but I suspect that they are at least siblings or cousins.

The Hartleys in my tree are:

Louisa (Hartley) Athy b: 1819
James b: 1822
Thornton b: 1822
John F. b: 1824
Phillip b: 1830
Thomas b: 1832
Arthur John b: 1833
John b: 1836

All of these people declare that they are born in Virginia.

I have a lot of information on everyone in the list with documentation that several are siblings, except James.

Have you had any other success with your endeavor?

Regards,
Tim Trochelman
tim.trochelman@gmail.com

Hello -

My name is Tim Trochelman. I am descended from Arthur John Hartley.

Arthur was born in what was Hampshire County, Virginia. It became Morgan Co., Virginia and finally became Morgan Co., West Virginia. He was born in 1833 and came to Miami County, Ohio in October 1849 with Louisa Hartley Athy and her husband, living with them on a farm.

There were a lot of Hartleys who suddenly appear in Ohio in the 1850 census. Besides Louisa, they were; Thomas, John F., Phillip, James T., and Thornton. We are in possession of a hand-written paper which also tells of a Nelson Hartley in Miami County, OH but I can't locate any official documents on him.

I wonder if your Nelson is related to the rest of the Hartleys in Miami County. Do you have any information on Jacob or Nelson coming from any of the Virginia/West Virginia counties that I mentioned above?

By the way, I am using my mother's Ancestry account. Please contact me at my personal e-mail address:

tim.trochelman@gmail.com

Thanks in advance for any information that you might have.

Regards,
Tim

Hi there
Sorry for the delay in answering. I haven't bren here for a while and so just found your post.

No, unfortunately they aren't connected to my Hartley's that I know of. Since my original post I discovered that George Henry Hartley b: 1853 Horton Bradford had died pre 1900.

I just received a passenger listing for James & Alilce Nicholson (Clara's father and stepmother) travelling onboard the SS Mannika from Sydney 10/7/1905 and arriving in Victoria BC 31/7/1905..as far as I know he didn't have any other family there. I believe he was off to visit Clara..she must have moved there at some stage, with or without George...

James died in 1907 ages almost 70, so he was 68 when he did that trip..a long way to go without a good reason.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you, but thank you for getting back to my query. If you ever see anything that rings a bell please let me know.

Many thanks
Sadieh33

Hi Sandy! I'm not sure, but I may have some info for you. I've been researching my husband's family for awhile. I have some Hartleys that I have questions about. I have a James Hartley born to a William and Jane Wheeler. I have no info on James, but his mother died in Oct. 1825. William had 3 wives and several children. I have a Mary, Elizabeth and William Nelson from Jane, but no dates or other info. William was from Berkely Co. VA born 1794 and died 1856. Could this be your James?

Hi Sandy. I don't have much on Jane Wheeler except that she died Oct 25, 1825, she married William Hartley (not Wheeler) sometime in 1816.
William was the son of Thomas Hartley and Elizabeth Williams. This Thomas should not be confused with the one in Pennsylavania. William was married 3 times, first to Jane Wheeler, then to Margaret Hix in 1826, then to Elizabeth Polk in 1851. I can account for 10 children with the 3 wives. My husband's family comes down from one of William's siblings. Some of William's siblings were born in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. Some stayed there while others mmoved on to Ohio and Illinois. Hope this helps with James

I am looking for information on Daniel Hartley born abt 1803 and his wife Rachel (last name unknown) born 1813 both of SC; they lived in Clay County Ga and Henry County Ala between 1840-1900.
We are related to Isaac K. Hartley and would love to know more about his birth family if known.

Would like to hear from anyone regarding information on the Hartley families, when and where did Daniel and Rachel die, who their children married and where they went if possible.

I appreciate in advance any help and look forward to the response.

I would love to know more of your civil war Hartley soldier from Henry County, Ala. The Hartleys I am researching were in Clay County Ga as well as several counties of Alabama prior to and after the war. William Morgan Hartley born 1829 SC was in Houston County Al between 1860-1880; his brother Ellison Hartley died in service 1864.
We are descended from their brother Isaac Hartley who was with Hilliard's Legions, all three are sons of Daniel and Rachel Hartley.

NANCY HARTLEY, born c.1767, COLNE

I'm researching my 5x great grandmother, Nancy Hartley, believed to have been born in Colne around 1767.

She married Richard Shackleton in Colne on 29 March 1788. They went on to have at least four children:
Jane Shackleton (b.1792)
Richard Shackleton (b.1794)
Susanna Shackleton (b.1798)
Joseph Shackleton (b.1801)

I'd love to trace her parents and any siblings - can anyone help?
Thomas William Proctor Private 7362 8th East Lancashire Regiment 37 Brigade 112 Division killed in Battle at Posiere 15.7.1916 on the Burnley Roll of Honour but obituary posted in Darwen paper when he lived at 5 Blackhorse Street Darwen with wife Emily(nee Walsh) and three sons - Alfred Walsh Proctor born 1903
Richard Proctor born 1908 died 1931 and William Henry Proctor Born 20.2.02.

Thomas William is my great grandfather I cannot find his date of birth or why he should be on roll of honour in Burnley when he had married in 1901 and was living in Darwen. I'm new to this and would love to know what the link is between Burnley and Darwen. There is also a Thomas William Proctor on the Roll of Honour for Arthur Edmondson Ltd, Empire Mill Rosegrove Burnley.

I would appreciate any information anyone might be able to give.

Sue

Darwen is not at all far away from Burnley and he could easily have married and moved to Darwen. He may have enlisted at Burnley in a 'Pals' regiment i.e. local lads together with his Burnley mates. I have a lot of Procters [note the spelling difference] from that area but have -so far - no T Willian P in my lot. Sorry!
