I am also trying to find more Hartmann's in the Minnesota area. My Grandmother is a Hartmann. I was mad when my aunt traced our lineage back to Europe, but didn't think about using my grandmother's maiden name. Her parents are Katherine Thornson-Hartmann and Carl Peter Christian Hartmann. That's all the information I have. I know my Grandmother is a pure Dane. She is calling her Aunt Alrene to find more.

I am the great, great, great grandson of Wilhelm Hartmann, the actor from Berlin whose son Wilhelm Jr. owned the Hartmann piano factory there. Wilhelm Sr. also had a son, Adolph who was required to leave Germany because of the revolution of 1848. I have much information, photos, documents, etc., about the Hartmanns both in Germany and the United States. Obviously we're related. I'm hoping you have Hartmann research as well. Contact me directly at "hsartist@charter.net"

Also, there is a descendent in Berlin who also has a Hartmann piano as well as family history.
That is absolutely fantastic. You have no idea how pleased I am. I have spent the last two years researching the names on the Pagham War Memorial. We had a very special service on 11th November 2008 which was attended by about 30 relatives of those who died.

Carl is my favourite because I thought it so sad that he had had to change his name and then died fighting Germany. As I am sure you know he is buried in the stunning Bouzencourt Ridge Cemetery and the windows in Pagham church are so beautiful - a joy to me for many years.

I am delighted to find that Frederick survived. I thought the line had died out.

My e-mail is zen118677@zen.co.uk and am sphsell on Skype.

I will certainly send you all I have.

Best wishes, Sandy Sell

Hi Sandy

The connection is entirely correct. I have a little bit more information on Carl, a whole lot more on his father (Augustus) and the following on Frederick, christened Friedrich Wilhelm, born 1884. Would be happy to dig out the other information on Augustus and Carl (and would love to see your photos and other memorabilia). Hope this is of interest. Best Tim

Frederick was at home in the 1891 census (Blackheath), not found in the 1901 census and at the home of his uncle (my Great Grandfather) in the 1911 census.

Dropped the second 'n' in Hartmann almost certainly in the run up to the war (he is still listed as Frederick William Hartmann in the 1911 census). Serves in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) in WWI, reaching the rank of captain (see records in National Archives).

Married Dorothy Ailsa Discombe (born 1898) on 2nd June 1923 at St George's, Hanover Square; divorced 1930 (See National Archives). At the time of his marriage, he is listed as a captain, late of the Royal Engineers, attached to the RNAS.

http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1923/1923%20-%20...
http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1923/1923%20-%20...
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycatalogu...

Together with Captain Ernest Samuel Lendrum (also RNVR), both apparently having being Great War Naval pilots, they formed a car distribution company. Initially Lendrum’s Motors Limited, it later became Lendrum & Hartman Limited, distributing Buicks. In 1932 they became Buick, Cadillac, and La Salle Concessionaires, being supplied with Canadian and a few U.S.-sourced Buicks as well as U.S.-sourced Cadillac and La Salle cars. In 1931, Lendrum resigned as a director, [dying in South Africa in spring 1939] and then on 20 July 1934, Lendrum and Hartman Limited completely reorganised, with an increased share capital, and a new director was appointed, Mrs. Dorothea Mirabelle Cynthia Hartman, F.W. Hartman’s wife, formerly Lady Dalrymple (they married in Oct-Dec 1933). Hartman, by then a Captain in the Royal Engineers, died on 5 September 1942, and his widow took over the running of the company.

His Will shows that he left his estate to his wife, spelt Dorothea (or Dorothy as sometimes written); there is no mention (or other records) of children.

His Will also shows that prior to, and up to, 1935 he was living at Northease, Rodmell, Nr Lewes, W Sussex. He then moved to Luckington, Wilts. The Luckington directory shows that Captain F.W. Hartman was listed as “occupier” of Luckington Manor although he must have been the freehold owner from at least 1935 to 1939.

http://www.gmhistorian.btinternet.co.uk/THEVANSITTARTS.htm

Wow, I had given up hope of ever finding their family!

My interest lies in Augustus and Jesse's younger son Carl Herbert who changed his name from Carl to Charles in 1914. Carl had a brother Frederick but I cannot trace him beyond 1891. If this is a correct connection I have pictures of the three Pre-Raphaelite windows in Carl's memory following his death on 2nd July 1918 together with two photographs and various other bits and bobs (including the gatepost of their holiday home!

I look forward to hearing from you.
Barbara Hartmann Brown

I am taking a long shot at solving a family mystery. I am searching for Barbara Hartman who was born around 1829 in Germany. She came to the US and married John Brown (or Johann Braun) and they resided in Rondout, New York. She had six children: Barbara,Edward, Eliza, John Sebastian and Mary. Sometime around 1861 she disappearred. Her husband came home and found the children home but he never saw his wife again. He hired a private investigator who trailed her to New York City where the trail went cold. We believe she may have started a new family. Does this story sound familiar? Even though it's over 150 year old we want to bring Barbara "home".

I now know quite a bit more about the individuals in these old photographs. There are four Hartman photographs including one photo of Louis Hartman (b abt 1825 in Prussia) and his wife Mary Gopell Goeser Hartman (b abt 1831 in Hannover). They lived in Illinois. There is also a family photo which includes two of the Hartman children, Louis E. Hartman (b abt 1865 in IL) and Mary Hartman Nagel (b abt 1867 in IL). There was also third Hartman child, Anna Hartman (b 1874 in IL).

I also have two Schlueter photographs including a photo of Friedrich W. Schlueter (b 1833 in Prussia) and his wife Charlotte W. Redecker (maiden name unknown, b abt 1837 in Hannover). They lived in Missouri. The Schlueter children included Friedrich W (b 1865 in MO), Emma (b 1868 in MO) and Charlotta W (b 1877 in MO)

If these are members of your family, please contact me at ELTN@comcast.net.
I have been reading the Hartmann posts. I am looking for a Ferdinand Hartmann who married Mary Frances Lies in St. Kilian, MN in April 1894. I know that is not close to New Market but could he be among your Hartmann relatives? He was born in Waconia, MN Dec. 12, 1867. No mention of parents names in his obit. He moved his family to Marion county, OR in the late 1920's and died there in 1943.

I mailed you the pics today from Woodbury Minnesota
that's the good news

The bad news is, the pics are of Anton Michael Hartmann and a wedding picture of Anton Hartmann and Anna Peters (my great grandparents)...

Anton Michael Hartmann is the son of another Anton Hartmann, who was a younger brother of Valentine Hartmann (2 years younger)

I am aware that you were looking for pictures of Valentine Hartmann and Rosalie Dealinger ...... or perhaps Rosalie Hartmann and John Seifert (parents of Anton Seifert .... father of Beverly Seifert.

But hopefully the pictures will be interesting to look at. I also included Ship records from 1854 Stormaway which brought Adam & Gertrude Hartmann and their family

Emil Hartmann of Brooklyn & NY

I am looking for any information on Emil Hartmann and his family. Emil came from Germany in 1906 to settle in Brookln. He lived with his cousin John(Jean) Heppel. John was married to Lena (maiden name may be Schmelke). John and Lena had 2 sons, William and Hans Heppel.

Later John left, remarried Anna Lobmayer aand moved to Newark, NJ. Emil then married Lena Heppel in 1919/NY and, as far as I know, Hans changed his name to Harry H Hartman, my grandfather. I also know John Heppel lists a brother-in-law in Brooklyn, named Heinrich Schmelke. Could be Lina's brother or John's sister married a Schmelke. If any of these names sound familiar, please let me know.

Claire
clairenelson@earthlink.net
