Hi, As you can see, my name is Paula Strecker Carrick. My
mother (d. 6 Nov'59) was Agnes Dorothea Harton Strecker. Her
mother was Agnes Dorothea Harton. She had several sisters,
among whom were Julia Phiania Harton, M.D., Genevieve Aloysia Harton, and Catherine Estelle Harton. My grandmother married Albert W. Strecker, D.D.S., Aunt Julia
did not marry, Aunt Genevieve married Clayton French Shoemaker, and Aunt Catherine married Edward Ryan. Our Harton family came from North Carolina and had been on this side of the Atlantic for generations. I do not know your "Katie" Harton, and though she may also have been "Catherine
E. Harton", I suspect they were different women. I hope you
find your "Katie". Paula

Jane, Where are you? We live in Seneca, SC. My niece and I
drove through Greenville just last night. I have been digging in my research piles. I found the 1910 PA cemsus in
which Pembroke was the head of household. He is listed as
57 years old. If that is accurate, he was born in 1852/3/4.
He did have a brother Horace. I think he also had a brother
John, a James, and maybe a Charles. If I list: James, Horace, William, Pembroke, John and Charles would be six. I
will try to get the photo of the six that my cousin has and
ask my Uncle Charles. I also have some letters my "Mama Harton" wrote Papa when she was traveling. I'll see if anything in them helps. Sorry about the tome. Paula (By the way, Pembroke was baptized "Paul" and it is for him that I am named.)

Paula, I haven't given up! I spent the morning at the local library (Greenville, SC) and checked the 1850 Census. I found in Granville Co.,, Henderson District, a Jno R. Harton 26, farmer, with wife Dolly R.26, and children James 5, Horace 3, and William 1. With them was Betsey Robertson 31. and before and after this listing were a number of Robertson families, headed by Lewis, Charles, William and also a Simon W. Kittrell. I found in Warren Co., NC, only Gideon, 61, with Dolly, 58, Robert 20, Mary 18, and Sabrina, 16. The Jno (John) could well be a son that I had had no record of--and appropriately named for his grandfather. By the way Gideon's father John is on the DAR Patriot list also. I have not tried to send in papers on him but Anne Overcash did.
I did not find Gideon in the 1860 Census. I thought it was interesting that this John's wife was also Dolly. I think I will look at the Virginia Census for 1860 tomorrow. Perhaps I will find them there. Do you have any tradition of service in the Civil War? I know you gave me Pembroke Decatur's brothers' names, but I have misplaced them. We'll solve this mystery yet! Best wishes, Jane
Hi Jane, I don't know where the "glitch" is. You have obviously done extensive, thorough research. I do know that
Papa Harton came from Henderson, not Hendersonville,as I once thought,NC. I know that he had five brothers; that at one time he lived and worked in Nashville, TN where there are still many kin folk; among them is Julia (Judy)Harton Burnett; John C. Harton Hospital in TN is named for kin. I know that Papa Harton married Mary Jane Waring, daughter of
Erasmus Gantt Waring and Julia Ann Lindsay Worthington; The
Waring connection is our DAR entry,as well as our Confederate link; The progenitor of our Waring line arrived at "The Cliffs" in Norfolk,VA in 1642: I know that Papa (all I ever heard him called) was brilliant despite being largely unschooled. He was an inventor who invented the machinery that makes the fig newton cookie among others. There is a link somewhere. I'll find it. Regards, Paula

Paula, I wonder whether we are talking about the same Dolly King Harriss. The one in my records married Gideon Harton in July 1810. That Gideon and Dolly had lots of girls and only a couple of boys. Do look at the Pegram Family Album <http://patch.net> There is lots of information on the Hartons and their kin in that site. Since Gideon was born in 1789, he could hardly have had very many children before that time. Thanks for responding. Jane

Hi Jane, Sorry about the long, long delay before I responded
to your informed inquiry. I do think Papa Harton came from
Henderson, Vance Co.,NC. I recall hearing about Dolly King Harris Harton who was the boys stepmother. Family tradition
held that their father married her after their mother's death. It also held that the boys revered her.A cousin of mine has a photo of all the boys. I have a photo of Papa's business in Philadelphia. At least several of the boys went to Richmond, Va. There are Harton kin there yet. Pembroke (Papa) married Mary Jane Waring.Another Harton boy (brother of Papa)) married her sister,Evelyn. It seems to me Evelyn died, he married again and named his first daughter "Evelyn". There are related Hartons in Tennessee. Papa worked for either the Nashville, National, or Tennessee Biscuit Company in Nashville. He left Nashville, but kin stayed. I have a cousin in the area who was born Harton, but married a Burnett. 'Nuff for now. Paula

Marilyn, you are clearly a descendant of Gideon Harton, brother to my Daniel (1787-1826). If you will go to Nola Duffy's site "The Pegram Family Album," you will find a detailed account of your lineage. The address is <http:''www.patch.net>. If that doesn't work put Pegram Family Album in a search blank. I have contributed all that I have to that site. Yes, you are a descendant of Thomas Harton of Warren Co., NC. Gideon was his grandson, and son of Thomas's son John, a Revolutionary soldier. The Thomas Harton who married Mary Wood was another son of that Thomas. Thomas Jr. went to Wilkes/Hancock Co.Georgia before 1790.

Thomas Harton who married William R. Bennett. Her mother was Alice Anne Best who married William J. Harton. If you have any informaton, I would certainly apprciate it.
Hi, I have mailed you before about the Harton, Harten name.

I now have more info on my line of the family. Do not know if it will help you or not.

Thomas A Harten worked on a farm for Robert Higdon on the 1880 census. He was 18. This was on the Lamar County Al census.

On the 1900 Census Thomas was married to Nancy McCoy and had one daughter Belle. Thomas and Nancy were probably married late 1880 or early 1881. They lived in Lamar County Al. Thomas states that his father was from Georgia.

Karla K Harten Hill
KarlaKHill@aol.com

Paula, I have been collecting descendants of Thomas Harton (d. 1795) of Warren County, NC. I feel sure the brothers you mentioned for Pembroke are among his descendants, but I am missing a link. If you think they might have been born in Henderson, Vance Co., NC, instead of Hendersonville, Henderson Co., NC, they are probably descendants of Gideon Harton (b. 1789) who stayed on in NC after most of his male relatives went West. Gideon's wife was Dorothea (or Dolly) King Harris, but she married Gideon in 1810. Do you know about what years the six brothers were born? I would like to check the Census to see whether I can find them.
