I don't think that I am related to Ernie, however apparently he and my grandfather were close as teenagers and young adults at least, maybe there was a relation. I have many many pictures of the two of them. I have been searching for my grandfather, Roy Poynter Baird, also called Bud or Buddy Baird for about 10 years now. Last anything has been know of him, he was in his father's obituary in 1951. Was hoping maybe a Hartsell knew who or where he was? Any info would be appriciated. You can e-mail me directly at conniez321@yahoo.com. conniez321 at yahoo.com

Re: EMMA HARTSELL MURDERED IN 1898

This is very interesting. My mother says that when she was a little girl, her uncle, her mother's much older brother, used to come visit them, and he'd sing the song "In eighteen hundred and ninety eight, sweet Emma met with an awful fate...." and it would scare her senseless. I decided to see if I could find the lyrics, and not only found them, but that the song was based on a real, and horrible, murder.

It was my grandmother's brother who sang the song. Their family lived in Charlotte in 1898, and moved to Statesville in 1916 (my grandmother was born in 1906).... but I was amazed to find out that poor little Emma and her family lived right in the area where my grandfather was born and spent his childhood. In fact, he was born just over a year after Emma was killed, and his oldest sister was just four years younger than she was. It could have been my great Aunt Mary Bell Field (1889-1988, Mrs. Mason Goodman). I expect my grandfather's father and uncles were amongst the men who took vengeance upon Emma's killers.

At any rate, I got interested in this, and looked up what I could about the Hartsell family on Ancestry.Com. As best I can figure it, Emma was a daughter of Samuel Joshua Hartsell (1860-1938) and his first wife Elizabeth C. Patrea (1859-1889). They were married in 1881, and had two children, Andrew Coyt Hartsell (1882-1949) and Emma Hartsell (1885-1898). After Elizabeth died, Samuel married Lula Jane DeArmon (1873-1933) and they had thirteen children. Emma and her mother and brother are buried at Poplar Tent Church, but her father and his second wife and a number of their children are buried at Gilwood Presbyterian Church. (The last time I was down in that area was for the funeral of one of my cousins, held at Gilwood in 2005.)

Samuel Joshua Hartsell was a son of Joshua Hartsell (1823-1863), a Confederate soldier killed in the War, and his wife Purlina Penelope Turner (1829-1906). Elizabeth C. Patrea was a daughter of William Patrea (c. 1821-after 1880), another Confederate soldier, and his wife Elizabeth E. Galloway (c.1821/3-after 1880). They lived at Mallard Creek, Mecklenburg Co. Lula DeArmon was a daughter of George Christopher DeArmon and his wife Amanda Caroline Ritchie.

The children of Samuel and Lula were: Columbus Payne Hartsell (1894-1987, m. Willie Estelle Boger), Cora Adelaide Hartsell (1895-1973, m. William T. Hudson), Winfield Scott Hartsell (1897-1925, m. Ruth Mae Goodnight), Franklin Seneca Hartsell (1899-1998, m. Cora N. Davis), Thelma Virginia Hartsell (1901-1929, m. Clarence Johnson), Boyd Allen Hartsell (1903-1987, m. Carolyn Cate), Roy Brevard Hartsell (1905-1947, m. Ruby Morris), Harry Glenn Hartsell (1908-1995, m. Bertha Mae Lefler), Bertha Mae Hartsell (1910-?, m. Calvin Beckman), Esther Irene Hartsell (1912-?, m. Paul Auten), Ruth Evelyn Hartsell (1914-1969) and Wilson Joshua Hartsell (1918-1975).

I am kin to DeArmons, Ritches and Goodnights who lived in this area, though I don't know if any of my family lines connect to any of these. The families I am researching in this area are Field, Bell, Wilkinson, DeWeese, Van Pelt, Ross, Irwin/Irvin, Carrigan, Storey...and there are probably some I've left out. Oh, I am also kin to Helms and Morrisons from Harrisburg in a different line, and kin by marriage to Goodmans, Kellys, Stirewalts, etc. My folks mostly went to the Coddle Creek ARP Church, and to Ramah (originally called Ramah Grove) Presbyterian, though some went to Gilwood (in fact, I suspect my great grandparents might have been among the founders of Gilwood) and Poplar Tent.

I'd be pleased to compare notes with anybody on the history of this part of the countryside.

Best Regards,

John
Stearnsfield@aol.com

I have a copy of “Bayou Salado – The Story of South Park”, by Virginia McConnell, which I would like to get back in the hands of Hartsel descendants or those with ties to Park Co., Colorado. The book describes Hartsel’s ranch, talks of his marriage in 1877 and children, describes the county from about 1859 on, including details on mining, residents, uses of land, early buildings and businesses. Picture of Samuel and many of his ranch. Please email me at margerice@prodigy.net

I am very interested in reading Eunice's book and finding more about the Hartsell branch. Mom passed away in 2005 and wished to be scattered on a mountain, so we took her to Morrow Mt. up top.

I think she mentioned us being related!

Re: EMMA HARTSELL MURDERED IN 1898

My grandfather was James Riley Hartsell, constable of Locust, N.C. for decades. His father was James Farrington Hartsell, one of the first post masters. I heard the story of Emma Hartsell all my life, and was told she was my cousin Emma. I heard the story of her horrifying death and rape, and my granddad had the picture of the two young men who allegedly raped and killed her hanging from the dogwood tree, as the song goes. I found out about the song in 2003 while doing research for a college paper about lynching, and realized this was about Cousin Emma. I am very interested in any research on her, and I've learned to play the song from the scant records I can find. I know J.C. Mainer from Concord N.C. recorded it in the 60's, along with lots of traditional ballads. I can't find the vinyl or any reproduction of it. One college mate did a paper on it, but hasn't found the cassette she had.

Is Eunice Hartsell the ex-wife of Henry Hartsell? That was James Riley's brother, my uncle Henry. He was a scruffy alcoholic that scared all us young-uns, and we only met Aunt Eunice when she visited my Grandma Zula, James Riley's wife. She and her sister Lela lived in Locust for many decades.

My mother, one of their three daughters, raised her three Preslar kids (me, my brother and sister) in the original Locust one-room schoolhouse that Henry burned down with a pot-bellied stove after he burned down my granny Hartsell's house full of antiques she brought from Ireland where she was Annie Morn, come here to find Jacob and raise their two children born in Ireland. I'm looking for that info as well.

I'm writing a novel with Annie in it...

I have two old photos of some Hartsell children. One has Dalis Hartsell and his sister Ethel Hartsell. The other is of Elva Hartsell and Loran Hartsell. These four children are all siblings. Their parents are Henry and Victoria Hartsell. The photos were taken in Anderson, Indiana. They were among a family album of tintypes and other old photos, one of which was labeled as Joseph Connor, taken in Philadelphia. Another was of a young woman named Mareh, taken in 1866 in Philadelphia. I have a whole box of photos from the same album (Hartsell and Connor families) that I would like to see reunited with family members of the people depicted. In the 1880 Roane County, TN, census Ellenden age 17 is listed with Martin and Margaret Hartsell. Is the Isaac Hartsell (b 1843 TN d 1924 TX) who married Martha Carr Bowman in 1867 and had 9 children the same man?

I don't have a clue about this particular incident, though I did wonder what state you are looking for...is that Ocean City Maryland or NJ? My suggestion is to go there and go to the library (or I think you can even do this on the internet now) to see if you can find information....
I guess you know it already but I have been amazed to find information through newspaper articles under the year I was searching for some information to come up with much of what I had been looking for. You might give that a try if you haven't yet...happy hunting! Why are you posting this on the Hartsell page anyway?

That makes perfect sense. You are right, though, it is very unusual to have named someone "Hartsell"...I guess his mother (or father) must have had some reason and wouldn't that be a fun study? Who knows, if you keep digging around long enough you might even find the clue! I will look up in our family Hartsell book, which names about every Hartsell who ever lived in the whole world from about 1600 to the day Cousin Eunice went onto her reward a little more than ten years ago, to see if there might be any mention in there of such a story...have you tried looking in the Hartsell History book yet? My dad was "Douglas Bell" and his dad was "Willie Bell" and I believe, as I told you, there are quite a few other Harsells who used that "Bell" as a middle name. I hope you have good luck finding out more and will be interested to know...if I find anything at all I will post a message here to let you know.

Thats what makes it so interesting, I have never in all my research found another person with Hartsell as his first name.
I do know that in 1885, there was a store in what is now part of Logan CO Ark, and across from that store was the Hartsells house. Since my GGrandfather lived and worked in Logan CO at the time of my Grandfathers birth, and since I can find no other reason for "Hartsell Riley Bell" to be named Hartsell, it was a long shot.
Thanks!

The only connection I know of is that my grandfather's middle name was "Bell" as was my father's. It's interesting that the Hartsell and Bell name are so interconnected, other than that quite honestly I don't know...I do know our bloodline being traced on my dad's side came up with plenty of Cherokee ancestry...let me know if there is anything else you might want to know I can help out with. Apart from this I have a book with all our ancestors listed from the 1500s to present. Maybe that will help you trace yours..

If you indeed are related to Hartsells. It sounds like somewhere along the way the names got reversed and you are looking at the "last name first"...Hartsell is usually a surname and not a first name...hope this helps. Karen

I have a question about your Hartsell line.
My GGrandfather was Riley Carlos Bell, born GA 1835 to a father from SC and mother from NC.
He ended up in Logan CO Ark in 1885 where my Grandfather was born.
My Grandfathers name was Hartsell Riley Bell.
Hartsells mother was Louisa Burnett, a blind girl who was R.C Bells second wife.
R.C Bell died in 1890, and Louisa died in 1892.
Hartsell was raised by Mary Jane (Mollie) Bell Childers, his oldest (1/2) sister and her husband William Wallace Childers. They lived in IT (Gans OK area).
Any connection you know of between Bells and Hartsells in the Ft Scott Ark / Indian Territory?

Christina Hertzel (Hartsell) (Sept. 1750), daughter of Hans Jacob

I've found JD Hartsell's pages, and also Paul Swan's. One of the many items they have in regard to their branch of the family's lineage is a letter from Jonas Hertzel to his younger brother in which Jonas listed his parents' children, dates of birth etc.

In that list of children of Jacob Hertzel is a daughter named Christina, born in Septemer (6th, if I remember correctly) 1750.

It is this Christina that I am looking for ANY information on.

I do know that she was confirmed at Tohickon Lutheran, Bedminster Twp, Bucks Co. in 1766. I'm not sure if Bedminster Twp later became part of Northampton or Lehigh Co, but it no longer is part of Bucks.

I also know that she is named as an inheritor in Hans Jacob's will, which was probated about 1784 (it's listed on a rootweb.com page).

My very strong hunch is that she is my 4th great grandmother. But, it's only a hunch and I'd love to either firmly qualify or disqualify my hunch.

Thanks!

Joe Hittle
skadj@yahoo.com

Correction

I've been informed that my information that the Christina I'm interested in is not the Christina who was confirmed at Tohickon. I have no problem accepting that, in fact, it makes my suspicion even stronger.

"My" Christina (nee: "unknown" on most gedcoms mentioning her) married George Michael Hittle Jr. They were attendenders/members of Dryland Church near present day Hecktown, PA. Many of their children were sponsored at baptism by members of Hans Jacob's family. Jonas actually performed this honor twice.

It is primarily that that leads me to suspect that "my" Christina is Hans Jacob's daughter. Many of Christina and George Michael's grandchildren have "Hertzel" or "Hartzel" in their given or middle names, and Hertzel is not the last name of any of their sons/daughters-in-law that I have found.

Again, I know that my suspicions are merely a hunch. I also know that I am not the first of my family to "hunch" in that direction, but no-one on our side is able to provide any documental evidence to either support or disavow that hunch.

Thanks for your time and patience!

Joe
