Hi Doris,
I should have included that Gibson Martin's will was also witnessed by Jacob Hartsfield. Gibson Martin's land grant abuts Jacob Hartsfield's land grant. Jacob Hartsfield's father and siblings moved away around 1758 to Crabtree Creek in Wake County (about 20 miles away).
Yes, Delilah's children were the children of Edward Cooley. I do not know when Edward Cooley died but was probably married to Delilah before 1796 as their son, Jacob H. Cooley, was born in 1796 or 1796 and likely named for Jacob Hartsfield. Edward Cooley is shown in the 1810 Census and mentioned in 1813 in Jacob Hartsfield's will.

Eric

Eric:
I have not actually seen the document myself but only seen references to it. I can't find it on Footnote.com so I am going to try and order it from the National Archives. It may possibly actually be a Pension and Bounty Warrant. If I locate it I will certainly share it.

I have seen so much misinformation about the Hartsfield/McElroys, so forgive me for asking lots of questions.

Could the Sarah that witnessed the will in 1774 be Godfrey Hartsfield's wife? You listed the daughters of Delilah Hartsfield (Jacob's daughter). Are these daughters of Edward Cooley? Somewhere in all my wanderings I saw a discussion of Edward's death and thought someone had proven his death date to be shortly after his marriage to Delilah. Now I will have to go back and find that.

Eric, I have run across several of your postings and recognize you are serious in searching for verifiable facts, so I hope you will bear with me.

If you prefer to email me directly, my email is mbpwez@yahoo.com. Thanks again for your help and your hard work.

Doris

Doris,
Wow! I did not know of Jacob Hartsfield's pension application. I am intrigued. Is there some place I could find this?
Sarah Hartsfield witnessed the will of Gibson Martin on 19 February 1774. This is the earliest mention of her with the Hartsfield name in my database. Two of Jacob's six known children were born after this date and are certainly Sarah's. The other four known children were all born between April 1761 and 19 February 1774 with the possible exception of Elizabeth who could have been born earlier.
1. Elizabeth Hartsfield: born 1755 to 1765
1755 to 1774 (26 to 45 in 1800 Census)
before 1765 (over 45 in 1810 Census)
before 1775 (over 45 in 1820 Census)
2. Andrew Hartsfield: born 21 October 1765
3. Delilah Hartsfield: born 1765 to 1774
1755 to 1774 (26 to 45 in 1800 Census)
1765 to 1784 (26 to 45 in 1810 Census)
4. Martha Hartsfield: born 1770 to 1774
1755 to 1774 (26 to 45 in 1800 Census)
1765 to 1784 (26 to 45 in 1810 Census)
1770 to 1780 (50 to 59 in 1830 Census)
1770 to 1780 (60 to 69 in 1840 Census)
5. Sarah Hartsfield: born 1774 to 1780
1774 to 1784 (16 to 26 in 1800 Census)
1765 to 1794 (26 to 45 in 1820 Census)
1770 to 1780 (50 to 59 in 1830 Census)
6. Mary Hartsfield: born 26 April 1781
There may be clues to the identity of Jacob's first wife in the names of his granddaughters.
Elizabeth's daughters: Frances, Sarah, Nancy, Mary, Roena, and Elizabeth.
Andrew's daughters: Mary, Elizabeth, Martha, and Cynthia.
Delilah's daughters: Mary, Martha, Sarah, and Louisa.
Martha's daughters: Sarah and Mary.

Eric Hartsfield
Edmonds, Washington

Thank you for your kind response. Sorry I am so long in answering but we were out of state.

Could I ask for a little more help? It was my understanding that Jacob's children were by his first wife whom he married in 1757 according to his pension application (which was denied for not having served long enough, I think).

Is there any information on when Jacob's first wife died or is there a source for the date of Jacob's and Sarah's marriage? It would have been after April of 1761 when as Archibald, Jr.'s widow, she returned an inventory of his estate, and sometime around then was appointed Micajah's guardian.

The info that Delia McElroy's father was Thomas McElroy comes from Goodspeed's, I believe, which has numerous errors I have found.

Thanks again for your help.

Doris

We are related! My grandfather was Arthur Hartsfield married to Adel Keene. My mother was Evelyn Hartsfield.
Authur and Adel had 4 children: Lowell (1912-1996), J.Floyd (1914-2003), Evelyn (1915-2007), and Gwendolyn Lorraine who is still living. I remember your grandmother well. I am doing some research on Cora and Arthur's parents James F. Hartsfield and Rebecca Ann Hopkins. Do you know who Rebecca's parents were and where they were from? I know that James Hartsfield's father was James Richards but don't know his mothers name. Do you have any info on either of them? Look forward to hearing from you.
Sylvia

Her siblings by his first marriage to J. Nancy Barfield were: Flora, Nora and Albert. Arthur had a son named Floyd and a daughter named Eveyln (maybe others). Floyd was a Ga. State Trooper and last lived in Americus, GA.

Ida Frances Hartsfield, born August 1887, was the daughter of Robert C. Hartsfield and Sarah E. Hartsfield who were married 16 December 1884 in Tipton County, Tennessee (apparently second cousins). Robert died and his widow, Sarah, married Daniel Needham on 20 March 1900 in Tipton County, Tennessee who was apparently an uncle to Charles and William Needham.
Robert C. Hartsfield was the son of Marcus Henry Hartsfield and Susan Myers who were married 30 November 1853 in Tipton County, Tennessee. Marcus Henry Hartsfield was the son of Nathan Hartsfield and Sarah Delk who were married 19 July 1809 in Wake County, North Carolina.
Sarah Elizabeth Hartsfield may have been the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hartsfield and Nancy Ann Leach who were married 8 August 1855 in Tipton County, Tennessee. Benjamin Franklin Hartsfield was the son of James Hartsfield and Sarah Dunn who were married 18 March 1823 in Wake County, North Carolina.
Nathan Hartsfield and James Hartsfield were both sons of Andrew Hartsfield (1746 to 1823). His wife is unknown (some have said Ghaskie McElroy but Ghaskie married a different Andrew Hartsfield). Andrew Hartsfield was the son of Andrew Hartsfield (1713 to 1761) and Sarah Lynn. Andrew Hartsfield was the son of Godfrey Hartsfield (ca 1680 to ca 1750) and Katherine Walker. Godfrey was the son of Jurian and Margaret Hartsfelder.

I think John was born 16 December 1883 to Henry and Harriet (Attaway) Hartsfield who were married 15 November 1879 in Rusk County, Texas. Harriet died before 1900 and is buried at the Miles Cemetery. Their children were:
Henry, Jr., born about 1872
Arch., born February 1875
Nish, daughter, born about 1875
Tommy, born about 1876
Addie, born about 1877
Anna, born August 1879
George, born April 1880
John, born 16 December 1882
Arman, born 15 October 1884
Lizzie, born October 1887
John married Rebecca around 1909. Their children, up to 1930, were:
Ethelina/Evaline, born 1909
Lovie, born about 1911
Dovie, born about 1911
Lou Willie, born about 1913
John Caesar, born about 1914
Cleopatra, born about 1916
Harriet Carolina, born about 1919
Charlie H., born about 1921
Virgils, born about 1923
Gurtha Lee, male, born about 1925.

Jacob Hartsfield's wife was Sarah (Lynn) McElroy, widow of Archibald McElroy, Jr. and mother of Micajah McElroy. Their children were:
Micajah McElroy, born 20 September 1760 (father died 1761)
Elizabeth Hartsfield, born early 1760s
Andrew Hartsfield, born 21 October 1765
Delilah Hartsfield, born around 1770
Martha Hartsfield, born early 1770s
Sarah Hartsfield, born late 1770s
Mary Hartsfield, born 26 April 1781

I do not know the parents of Delia McElroy, born 6 April 1789. I do not believe they could have been Micajah McElroy together with Delilah Hartsfield as they were half-siblings. Some of the family trees on Ancestry.com show Delia's father as Thomas McElroy but do not list a mother. Would it be possible that Delilah Hartsfield first married Thomas McElroy, gave birth to Delia, then married Edward Cooley? Jacob Hartsfield's will of 1813 lists a daughter, Delilah, wife of Edward Cooley. One of their children was Jacob H. Cooley, born 1795 or 1796. (I suspect his full name is Jacob Hartsfield Cooley).
The old Hartsfield land west of Bunn, North Carolina was settled by Andrew Hartsfield (b. 1713) around 1746 and passed to son, Jacob Hartsfield (b. 1737) to son, Andrew Hartsfield (b. 1765) to son, James Hartsfield (b. about 1802) to cousin, Jacob H. Cooley (b. about 1795).

Sylvia,
I do not have anything concrete on the parentage of James Floyd Richards/Hartsfield.
In the 1850 Census of District 27 of Sumter County, Georgia I find a James Richards, age 25 and born in Georgia, and Nancy Richards, age 19 and born in North Carolina who are noted as having been married within the year. Nancy M. Council married James Richards 4 April 1850 in Sumter County. I find a 35 year old, Georgia born, James Richards in Brevard County, Florida in 1860. This could possibly be the same James Richards.
In the 1850 Census of District 24 of Dooly County, Georgia I find a Marian Hartsfield, age 18 and born in North Carolina living with Benjamin Hartsfield, age 28 and born in North Carolina and his wife, Eliza, age 28 and born in Georgia. I believe Benjamin and Marian to be a brother and sister to Rev. James Hartsfield. I find nothing more about Marian Hartsfield. She could possibly have married a Richards.
The 1900 Census says that James Floyd Richards/Hartsfield was born in November 1856. By 1860 he is living with Rev. James Hartsfield in Macon County, Georgia. The court house burned in 1857. It may be possible that the Richards/Hartsfield marriage took place in Macon County and that the marriage book burned. It is also possible that any guardianship records also burned.
Some places to look might be the Macon County court house in Oglethorpe or the Baptist records at Mercer Univeristy. Deed books and tax records might show a Richards living near Rev. James Hartsfield. If one knew which congregation Rev. James Hartsfield served, one might find Richards membership records there.
The apparent Hartsfield siblings (Rev. James, Benjamin, Marian, Jesse S., and Louis/Lewis) are possibly the children of a David Hartsfield who appears in Marion County, South Carolina records in 1830, 1831, 1832, 1837, and 1838 and in neighboring Robeson County, North Carolina in 1840. This David Hartsfield must somehow connect with earlier Hartsfields in Lenoir County, North Carolina.

I hope this helps.

Hi Eric,
I was reading old post and saw yours. I am researching James F. Hartsfield (1856-1920) married lst J. Nancy Barfield, 2nd Rebecca Ann Hopkins. Of James and Rebecca's five children, Arthur was my maternal grandfather. I am looking for any information on James F. Hartsfield's mother and father. I know he (James F. Hartsfield) was born James F. Richards. His father was James Richards and mother was a Hartsfield, don't know her first name. She died when he was very young and he was raised by her brother Rev. James Hartsfield and his wife Elizabeth. At some point he changed his name from Richards to Hartsfield. Do you have any information on James Richards or his wife Unknown Hartsfield?
Thanks

HARTSFIELD - Neighbors in FRANKLIN CO. NC

I'm trying to find information on a Jesse Richards of Franklin Co. North Carolina. I have found thru Court records that a Darling Sanders ( son of my ggggreat grand father ) bought 86 acres of land and gave Jesse Richards lifetime survival rights on the land. My GGGGrandfather was a James Sanders/Saunders and his wife a GILLY, trying to find out my Sanders ancestors.I am wondering if possibly Jesse Richards
could of been the father of Gilly by getting life time rights to live on the 86 acres. They lived in the area of Crooked Creek, before it runs into Tar River. a plat map of the area shows that Edward Cooley lived on one side of James Sanders and Jesse Richards on another and JACOB HARTSFIELD on the other. If there is any Hartsfield descendents or any body that has information on the names above.
I would appreciate any info that any one might have.
Thank you very much. jot72121@alltel.net

I found the following family on the 1850 & 1860 Carroll Co, MS census and wondered if anyone else out there are researching this family:
James Hartsfield b 1806 NC; Mary NC; Macomb b 1836 NC; Catherine b 1838 GA; John b 1841 MS; James b 1845 MS; Joanna b 1842 MS; Mary b 1860 MS. I haven't found any record of any of this family after 1860 census except Joanna.
I believe that Joanna is my husbands ggrandmother married to David Lamb in DeSoto Co, MS Jan 13, 1869. The last time I find Joanna is on the 1880 Tate Co, MS census so I assume she died sometime before 1888 as David remarries in that year.
Karen Craig McAndrew

Sherry,

No, we're not actively collecting female DNA through the Hatfield/Hartsfield DNA project, but I'd love to chat with you about your ancestry to see if we can help each other.

We have located the old Hartsfield cemetery on the premises of Andrew (1765-1862)and son Dr. Wesley Hartsfield's estate, now a historically preserved landmark in Wake Forest, Wake Co.,NC. The cemetery has the marked graves of Flavius Hartsfield (1836-1892)and wife Nancy (Nannie) Rogers Hartsfield and serveral other graves with chunks of stone as markers, nothing legible.
We'd like to hear from others who may know who these graves are. Are they Andrew, Dr. Wesley or the 3 sons who died young in the Civil War. There are several Hartsfield descendants that would like to clean and restore this cemetery and possibly mark the unmarked graves.
Does anyone know where the NC Andrew Hartsfield is buried?

Need DNA participant - Hartsfield

The Hatfield DNA project, which includes Hartsfields, is very small at this point, but it is already raising questions.

Research of recent years has apparently established that John Hatfield / wife Catherine Supplee of Philadelphia is supposed to be a descendant of Jurien Hartsfelder.

However, new DNA results came back from the lab last week which say that the descendant of John Hatfield / Catherine Supplee who was tested is a match for another participant who may descend from immigrant Matthias Hatfield of New Jersey.

If these lineages are correctly researched, then it's very possible that immigrants Matthias Hatfield and Jurien Hartsfelder are closely related.

It is also possible that one of these lineages is slotted to the wrong immigrant family, and the participants are continuing to check this.

I am looking for a direct-line male Hartsfield who can trace back to Godfrey Hartsfield, son of Jurien Hartsfelder, who is willing to join the DNA project. This is the only way to determine if the research of Dr. Oliver Weaver and Dr. Galen Hatfield into Hartsfield ancestry is correct.

See the DNA project webpage (click the tab "Results") for further information:
www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/hatfield/

It is the sample labeled H-5 that descends from John Hatfield / Catherine Supplee ... and is supposed to represent the DNA of Jurien Hartsfelder.

If you can locate a living male named Hartsfield (genealogist or not) who might be a candidate, please contact the project administrator.

Thanks.

Lorelei,
I have been wondering about this Betsey Hartsfield for a number of years. Did George Scarlett live long after their marriage? Did they have children? In what part of Orange County did they dwell?
I ask because Jacob Hartsfield had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in the early 1760s. Elizabeth married Bridges Arrendell. Only the youngest two of Bridges Arrendell's surviving children were named in Jacob Hartsfield's Will in 1813: Roena (Arrendell) Harris, born about 1794, and Elizabeth Arrendell. This may indicate that the older Arrendell children were not Elizabeth's and that Elizabeth and Bridges did not marry until nearly 1794. Bridges Arrendell died in 1801 and Elizabeth married Littleberry White in 1801.

Eric Hartsfield

My Betsy was married to George Scarlett 6 July 1786. He was born in 1765 and died 13 April 1825. They had the following children: George Jr. 1787; Sarah "Sally" 1788; Thomas 1790; Stephen 1791; Robert 1792; Jane 1794; James 1795; John 1796; Elizabeth 1800; Samuel 1803; Mary "Polly" 1805; William 1808. We come down from Stephen. I don't know where abouts in Orange County the family lived. I'd sure like to know because they must be buried near where they lived. Stephen moved to Orange County, Indiana in 1844. Let me know if you have any information along these lines.

I can't find a George Scarlett in the census records of Orange County till 1850. He's 7 years old living with Mrs. Scarlett. My family tree stops with these Betsey and George people and I have never found any records to really substantiate that they ARE our ancestors. I was hoping to find out where they are buried, but I haven't so far. I got my information from other genealogists' family trees years ago. I have their children as: George, Jr. 1787; Sarah"Sally" 1788;Thomas abt. 1790;Stephan 1791;Robert 1792;Jane 1794;James 1795;John abt 1796; Elizabeth 1800; Samuel 1803;Mary"Polly" abt 1805;and William 1808. Is this your William? My husband's family comes down from Stephan who moved to Orange Co., Indiana in 1844. Do you have all the same children? Where did you get your information? I guess we could go down the list of kids and see if we can see where they lived in Orange County. Some of the Faucett family that married into the Scarletts in Indiana came from the part of Orange County that is now Alamance. Write me at my email address.
Lorelei Scarlett
lscarlett00@yahoo.com
I am a descendent of Jurian Gorg Hartzfelder, who imigrated to this country in the mid 17th century. He settled in the area around Philadelphia, PA, near Germantown. My DNA shos me as a descendent of Jacob Hartsfield of TN, who was a GGGGGrandson of Jurian. I have had my DNA processed by genebase and at one time had the results printed out, but have disposed of the print out. You may check with the genebase web site http://genebase.com/ to search for my DNA results. If you need anything further contact me.

Re: Betsey Hartsfield

Ihave the following children for George & Betsey:
John b. abt1788 (married either Ann Pratt or Delilah Laycock)
Sarah or Sally b. abt 1790
Mary (Polly) b. 1792 m. Solomon Carson
Stephen b. 1794 d. 1860 Orange Co. m. Nancy Crabtree b. 1796 and d. 1855 Orange Co. Stephen had George W. b. 1814 who married Cassandra Patton, George is a Hatter, He is in Orange Co in 1850 with children: John, Martha J. Ally Frances and James, Margaret. By 1860 he has moved to Indiana and added children Stephen A, Nancy C, Henry R.
James b. 1796 Orange Co
Robert b. 1798 Orange Co. 1850 census shows Robert married to Mary E. in Davidson Co with children William F., George W., Samuel W, Felix, Phebe, Mary and David
Samuel b. 1800 m. Ellen Warren 1832
Thomas b. 1802 m. Willie Crabtree
WILLIAM S. B. 1804 M. SARAH SIDDLE. (MY ANCESTOR)

My information has come from the genforums and ancestry.com. Up to William Franklin son of William S. That I got from Gladys Scarlette.
I thought George's parents might be John and Elizabeth Humphreys Scarlett. From what I could find all their children were born in NC. There are so many John Scarletts that it would be near impossible to really pin it down.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. How in the world can George Scarlett escape the census takers? I have that he died in 1825 and Elizabeth died 1840.
Hi, your Betsey is my Betsey too. My line comes down from George and Betsey through their son William S to William F to Lucinda Scarlett. I have in my notes that he died 1825 and Betsey died 1840 both in Orange County. Unfortunately that is all I have. Does anyone know why he does not appear on any census reports? At least I couldn't find him.
