HARTSHORN FAMILY WEB PAGE

About four months ago, RootsWeb, the host for the Hartshorn page, announced that a policy change would result in all RW sponsored pages having a banner added to the top of their pages, indicating that they were hosted by RW/Ancestry.com. Further, many page owners perceived a threat to the integrity of their data. The perceived threat of seeing their data used, copied and referenced by parties without permission was enough to cause the USGenWeb Project and their affiliates to move their pages where control would be strictly maintained and controlled by the authors/creators.

I have no opinion, one way or the other but decided to move the HARTSHORN web pages to my personal server, Hartshorn.us. All the work I have done on these pages required revisions, changing various aspects in order to make them compatible with this server. The HARTSHORN page currently consists of the index page and 3,455 sub-pages, all of which I have worked on for the past four months. Every indication is that the pages are now viable. They should provide all the data you are accustomed to seeing. Now that they have been successfully transferred, I hope to have the time to begin adding new material. At the same time, you may experience dead links and empty images but I am currently reviewing them. Any help I can get from users, pointing out these short-comings, would be greatly appreciated.

Please change your bookmarks to access the new HARTSHORN web site.
It is: http://www.hartshorn.us/Family/ (or
http://www.hartshorn.us/Family/index.htm)

Derick S.
Sally Ann Hartshorn

Looking for anyone interested in this branch of the Hartshorn family. Sally Ann b. 18 Jun 1832 in Danville, Livingston Co., NY.,was the daughter of Anson P. Hartshorn (Hartson)and Arathurista (Thursta, Thursday) Bailey. Sally married Leander B. Godfrey in 1851, in Erie Co. PA, and they moved to MI after 1861.

There were four Godfrey children: Cora 1859, Elmer E. 1861, Nettie 1867 and Maud 1870.

It is believed that Sally Ann was from a large family, but I only have the names of two, Albert Hartshorn and R. Jane Hartshorn. They both also married Godfreys or near kin.
Hartshorns - Thurmaston Leicestershire

Hi folks, have just joined the site and may be able to help anyone whose family originates from Thurmaston. My Grandfather Joseph Tyrrell lived there all his life and was a local councillor and Methodist Church stalwart. I was born there 1937. With aid of two cousins I have a comprehensive family tree from 1650. I always thought Thurmaston was the 'centre' for Hartshorns as it is the main name in the village but I see we are from further afield also. Mail me if I can help Mick

Elisha and Eliza (Whipple) Hartshorn family of Portage, Ashtabula, Geauga counties Ohio area 1850 - 1860

Does anyone know of anyone who is or has done research on the descendants or ancestors of Elsiha and Eliza (Whipple) Hartshorn / Hartson (The last name many eventually settled with is Hartson). Some of their children or grandchildren are: Henry Hartshorn, Amander Hartshorn (died and buried in East Lawn cemetery Mantau, Ohio), Laura Hartshorn, Harriet Lucinda Hartshorn (married a John Addicott), Martha Hartshorn (married a James Waldo), Sherman Hartshorn (married an Alice Folsom), Stephen Hartshorn (married a Laura Finch in Winnebago Cty. WI.), Betsey Hartson (married a William Baster or Bester, also settled in WI.). Many of these families settled in Lake, Geauga and Portage counties of Ohio. Some of them are buried in the Evergeen Cemetery in Painesville, Ohio. It is also know from a posting on a rootsweb message board that these families had reunions starting in 1899 going annually for about forty years. ( see the following link and read postings by Toni Jollay - Prevost) http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hartshorne/mb.ashx. I also believe Elisha had sisters named Laura Hartshorn (married a Jonathan Bissell), a Theresa Hartshorn (born in Freedom, NY), James Hartshorn (married a Drusilla Keyes) and five other siblings. His parents may have been Stephen Eldredge Hartshorn and Betsey Bingham. Some of the other surnames of descendants of many of these Hartshorns / Hartsons are Dunn, Downing, Kingsley, Richards, Taylor, Dayton, Liddle, Stucky and Van Luven.

Does anyone have any info about the Hartshorn family in Shropshire?

My great-great grandmother was Elizabeth Hartshorn, born in Ironbridge c1848.

Her father was William Hartshorn, born c1807 in Much Wenlock and was a chemist. He was married to Ann (c1806).

She had 5 brothers - Thomas (c1832), Henry (c1834), Edward (c1836) and Albert (c1838) who were all chemists as well.
Elizabeth Hartshorne c1819-1911 born Ironbridge, Shropshire

Hi - Watching posts with interest concerning later Elizabeth and Ironbridge. My Elizabeth was the daughter of a Joseph Hartshorne, miner and was born Ironbridge. I have not found a baptism but have thought she was possibly the daughter of Joseph Hartshorne (baptised 25 Sep 1785 at Benthall) and Elizabeth Bagnell who married 1806 at Sutton Maddock. I have recently been given a daguerretype picture of this Elizabeth (or so my mother thinks). Does anyone else know anything of this Elizabeth or her family. Does anyone else have family photographs who can help confirm identity? She married Samuel Ensor in 1841 and emigrated to NZ with most of her family ariving early 1865.

Murder of Frank Hartshorn by William Edwards

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 4 December 1902 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

EDWARDS GOES UP FOR LIFE

Murderer of Frank Hartshorn Found Guilty by Jury

Lawton: William Edwards, tried here for the murder of Frank Hardshorn, May 15, 1902, was found guilty and the penalty fixed at imprisonment for life. No justification for the crime was offered, but the defense of insanity was introduced. Edwards had lost his nose and upper lip and this, with a fall from a horse, was said to have made him insane. William Edwards drew a claim and Frank Hartshorn successfully contested. A few days after the decision Edward met Hartshorn at Indianhoma, a small town a few miles west of h ere and after a few words shot Hartshorn with a rifle. Hartshorn died that night.

George Hartshorne

My 4g-grandfather George Hartshorne married Anne Hallsworth in Duffield near Belper in Derbyshire England in 1805. They had at least three children: Thomas (1813), William (1817), and Charles (1819). Charles is my 3g-grandfather.
I'm trying to find out where George comes from. Most likely places are the Belper area in Derbyshire (just because that's where he was married), Great Hanwood near Shrewsbury in Shropshire (because a George was born there at about the right date), or the Benthall-Brosely area in Shropshire (because the Hartshorns were prolific and liked the name George). But these are guesses. If anyone has any information linking a George Hartshorne (with or without the e), born about 1780, to the Belper area around 1800, please contact me.
By the way, in case you are confused, I'm the Canadian Roy Hartshorn not the English Roy Hartshorn (see an earlier message). Any American Roy Hartshorns?

Hartshornes of Shropshire

Hi,
I’m looking into Thomas Hartshorne who had a house in Benthall Shropshire in 1621 as his near neighbour was my ancestor Thomas Syner alias Taylor. Both families jumped on the tobacco pipe-making boom of the 1660s and may have shared this enterprise. I’m interested if anyone else researching the Hartshornes of Broseley or Benthall prior to 1800.

Peter Taylor
My GG Grandmother, Eliza Hartshorn was born in about 1868. Where, I don't know? In 1887 she gave birth to my G father in the Union Workhouse, Berrington, Shropshire. In 1898 she turns up again in Newcastle on Tyne with her son. I am unable to find out who her parents were. I am trying to find evidence of a female baby born, probably our of wedlock. She always said her father was called Joseph and he was a coal miner.
Thank you,
David Hartshorn

Harvey Hartson

I am decended from a Harvey Hartson and wife Eunice, in Middleburg twp, Cuyayoga Co. Ohio 1820 census; Dover twp, same county/state 1830, Stephenson County, Illinois 1840/50; Carroll County, Illinois 1860; Eunice alone in daughters home in 1870 Carroll County, IL census. I need Eunice's maiden name and the parents of both. Their daughter, Olive Adaline Hartson married my g-g-grandfather, William Henry Willis in 1841, Stephenson County, IL. Have lost all trace of her after 1858. I need to find the connection of Harvey to his parents. Census says he was born in Conn. All the Hartsons in Ohio and Illinois were born NY with David and Olive Rice as parents. Is there a connection here? Believe David son of Eliphlet Hartshorn. If anyone has any information on this I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

I just discovered that my husband's family is related to Rhoda A. (Hartson) Ireland. She married James B. Ireland in Benton , PA June 29, 1854. In 1860 she and James show up on the 1860 census with Amos A., Lucius D., Festus U., Julia and their mother Sabina Hartson all living nearby. This family went on to live briefly in Chicsaw Co., IA, then on to the Sioux Valley in Dixon Co., NE, and Centerville, Lincoln Co., SD. Festus U. Hartson was killed in the Civil War.

Is there anyone out there who is related to this branch of the family? I would like to correspond with anyone descended from Rhoda Hartson Ireland --OR—from anyone descended from her siblings’ families.

Daniel Hartshorn Families, Newburgh N.Y.

My Name is Thomas Redwine Hartshorn Jr. I live in Jacksonville Florida.
I am trying to locate family members from the Newburgh N. Y. area. My GG-Grandfather was Daniel Hartshorn. Of the several children he had, was my G-Grandfather,(GeorgeHartshorn). George had several brothers and sisters,(Andrew, Denton, Isaac Guernsey, John Mackey, Abigail, Sarah Jane, Lucinda, and Warren.
Thanks to Derick Hartshorn, I have finally contacted and personally met one of my cousins from this line,(Ed Hartshorn). He is a direct relative of Isaac Guernsey Hartshorn. It was very exciting to meet one of my family members. I have never had the priviledge of meeting or knowing any Hartshorn family member beyound my Grandfather,(George Dubois Hartshorn) as my G-Grandfather,(George Hartshorn) moved to Georgia in the late 1800's. He married my G-Grandmother,(Emma Terpenning) in Newburgh. For moving to the south he and his father,(Daniel) evidently had words, as we were always told that my G-Grandfather was disowned for moving to the south. I sure would like to know more about my GG-Grandfather and other family members.
Surely there are other family relatives still in the Newburgh area. If you see this, or know this family, please contact me.
With warmest regards,
Tom
FYI

U WA Libraries Digital Photo Collections excerpt:
Albert Hartshorn and his wife Florence were born in Michigan in 1869. They had one daughter, Hazel Hartshorn Goslie. Florence worked as a photographer’s assistant to E.J. Hamacher in the Lake Bennett area beginning around 1898. The family appear to have lived in Canada until the 1920s. By 1930, Florence and Albert were divorced. Albert was living in Idaho and Florence was living in Seattle. Florence died in King County in 1943. [Sources: Becker, EA. (1957). Monument at Dead Horse Gulch. The Alaska Sportsman XXIII (5), 12-17, 42-45.
Regarding: Samuel Hartshorn/Mary Jane Coyle

Would very much appreciate any info anyone may have on a very elusive ancestor, Samuel Hartshorn. The little info I have is that he may have been born in Kansas. He was married to Mary Jane Coyle b.12 May 1858 possibly in Kansas or Iowa.
They are my gr. gr. grandparents. I have a newspaper clipping from 1957 complete with a picture of Mary Jane and two of her daughters celebrating Mary Janes 99th birthday. The daughters were Myrtle E. b 11 Feb 1896, and the other daughter was Mable V. b.25 June 1886. Mable V. was my gr. grandmother and was at one time married to my gr. grandfather Quincy Wellington. The clipping I have was from the St. Paul MN newspaper. Mary Jane died the following March and Mable died in 1972 with the last name of Harris. Mary Jane Coyle Hartshorn and Mable Hartshorn Wellington Harris both died in Ramsey Co. Minnesota. Does anyone have any leads to share?

I am searching for any information, stories, pictures, etc. related to John Morgan Hartson, son of Leonard Edward Hartson and Eunice Dustin, husband of Susan Antoinette Smith. Does anyone know what happened to him? His family mentions in letters that he simply "left". Last account of him was in Texas although his brother, Hiram, writes in a letter that he thinks he went to Louisiana with his cattle and may have been killed "for his money".

I am VERY interested in any family stories and/or pictures anyone has related to this Hartson/Hartshorn line.

Glad to share any information I have.

Thanks!

I'm looking for information on Samuel E. Hartshorn. I believe that he was born in Salem Depot, NH, in 1887. I have that he married Alice Beatrice Holbrook, and that his father's name was John. He later moved to Rhode Island wher my grandfather Frederick Arthur Hartshorn was born in 1905. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
I have a distant relative, a William Hartshorn, who had seven children and ran a school in Bray Ireland, during the early 1800's. He had a sister (Isabel) in Wales. I'm trying to connect them to Hartshorns who emigrated to Iowa, with 2 Hartshorns (William G. and John G.) who ended up finally in Danville, IL, USA. They were strip miners and 1 of them (my great grandfather), John G. invented the Marion shovel, revolutionizing strip mining in the U.S. His son Harry, was my grandfather and my father is Harry Albert Hartshorn. Does anything sound familiar?
Ann Robb

HELP A HARTSHORN

I am having trouble tracing my family tree.

My name is Amy Louise Hartshorn d.o.b 07/12/78
I was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

My parents originate from Kirk Hallam & West Hallam, Derbyshire.

My father is Nicholas George Hartshorn age 52ish!!! He came from West Hallam, near Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

He has one brother and two sisters.
Brother - Laurence (Lol') - aged 62ish
Sister 1 - Jennifer - aged ??
Sister 2 - Anthea - aged ??

There was one other brother who died as an infant and is buried in West Hallam Church Yard (N.B - If this child had survived my dad would not be here!!)

My grandfather died when I was aged around 10-12.
At that age I was not able to attend any funeral and therfore do not know if grandpa was buried or cremated (at present I don't want to upset any family members by asking too many questions - sorry)

I do recall family saying that my grandfather used to run a small haulage firm from his home in West Hallam, however I do not know if they are referring to my grandfather or my dad's grandfather.

My grandmother died 3-4 years ago. We had a service at West Hallam Church then went on to Bramcote Crem. - this was when my dad told me about his brother being buried at the church. (Apparently the grave is near to the path as you walk up to the church)

I have heard rumours from my dads' side of the family that some of my grandmothers relatives moved to America.

My mother is Barbara Ann d.o.b 17/02/19??? (mid 40's)
Her maiden name was Cope

Her father was Maurice Benjiman Cope, who died last year (May)

Her mother is Francis May (nee Robinson) aged 82 (83 Nov'02!)

My mum came from Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston where my gran still resides.

I would much appreciate if any one can help me trace my tree back further.

If I need to I will have to get more information from family (tactfully!!!)

Looking forward to hearing from you!!

Amy

I would be very pleased if someone could help out this Canadian. I am looking for parents, siblings, desendents of William Thomas HARTSHORN & Alice MARSH. They married in 1894 in Atcham Liverpool and had several children including Gordon, William Norman (b. 1903), Rowland, Elsie, etc. William Thomas owned a few businesses, had an obsession with racehorses. He eventually left his family and had a second family in Wales. William Norman was my grandfather, he and Elsie were the only ones to come to Canada. Thank you for any help!
