Sarah Hartshorne married Benjamin Hill 1824, Wolverhampton

This marriage was on the Family Search site, St Peter's Church. Wondering if these were the parents of Benjamin Hill who was born in 1827 in Sedgely, Staffordshire who married Mary Kenney in 1846 at Collegiate church in Wolverhampton. The younger Benjamin was a joiner and his marriage certificate stated father's name Benjamin, occupation carpenter. Does anyone know if this fits? Did Benjamin and Sarah have other children? Thanks.

This book for anyone who is interested is called the "Hartshorn Reunion Secretary's Report". It is a one of a kind compostion book in which the descendant of Stephen Eldridge Hartshorn kept minutes to their reunions which started in 1899 and ran for about forty years. In it are birth, death and marriage dates of many of Stephen's descendants. I became interested in this book when I noticed my great - great grandfathers death date in one of Toni's postings on this message board. I'm currently working on transcribing it and breaking down all the surnames into a workable family tree. I'm willing to share this information so please feel free to contact me.

Thank you so much Ed for asking Toni for it and then being kind enough to send it to me.

Clark Reetz

P.S. Derrick, I'll be e-mailing you the transcription and sending you a photo copy of the books pages soon.
Searching for parents of Lewis Warren Ten Eyck b. NY and Isabelle Hartshorne b.PA. They were parents of Lewis Warren Ten Eyck b. IA who married Mary P. Stevenson. They were parents of Boyd, Donald and Lewis Ten Eyck born in Nebraska. Lewis died age 26 unmarried. Donald Stevenson and Boyd Hartshorne Ten Eyck married and have living children. I'm guessing at dates. Perhaps Lewis Warren Ten Eyck Jr. b. 1890s, Lewis Warren T.E. Sr. b.1870s.
Help, please and thanks!

Andrew

Many thanks for this. It would be useful if you can either find a sibling of George who was born pre March/April 1901, or find out who George's parents were. Reason is that this then takes the search within the scope of published census information. Once that is the case, then great leaps can (and I emphasise "can" rather than "will") be made.

German ancestry - unlikely in recent history on the Hartshorne side, as the name goes back a long way, in the IGI there are entries back to the beginning of parish registers in the 16th century for England. So, I suppose 3 possibilities -
1) No German ancestry
2) German ancestry but not on the Hartshorne name
3) German ancestry involving an Anglicising of a German name to Hartshorne

In addition there is the village of Hartshorne in Derbyshire. However, have a look at the following web site
http://www.hartshorne.org.uk/Content/History/Origins.htm

for some other explanations of origin of name including a reference to it coming out of Germany in AD 300 or thereabouts

Best regards

Andy Kerridge

Dear Toni,
Thanks so much for your posting of the Hartshorn material.
I was astonished to read some of the names and recognize many of them. The material may be of immeasurable value to many of us.
My purpose in this email is to promote your considering Derick Hartshorn as the recipient of the book. Without doubt, he is the guru and source for many of us researching this area. I am from northeast Ohio and recognize many of the names and, thanks to Derick, am researching the line from Monroe County, Ohio. Many of the names( especially the Meredith name) may well result is solving a long-time mystery for many of us( the husband of Ann Meredith/Merideth). And that is just one example !
In any event, I would like to propose being a "backup" to Derick should you not be able to make arrangements for any reason. Derick certainly is the one who should have the material and will cherish and care for it. I believe I can offer the same care. I believe I can speak for many Hartshorns researching this line that the information needs to become part of our research and whatever I can do to ensure that, please contact me. thanks, Ed Hartshorn
Monongahela, Pa
Hi.
My mother was born Sheila Hartshorne, 6/6/1934, in South Elmsall, WRY, England. Daughter of George Hartshorne, d.o.b 2/1/1904 born in Denby Dale, WRY. George had numerous siblings, Les (younger than him), Winnifred (older), Gertrude (older) and others who, right now I can't remember but can find out from my mother. All born and lived in the WRY. I am informed, although I don't know if it is true, they are descended from a German mining engineer who came over to sink some mines in the Potteries area. Can get more info if required.

Andrew Lindsay

Lawrence Hartshorne (1755 or '56) was from a Quaker family in New Jersey, and was a Loyalist, evacuated from New York to Halifax, N.S. c. 1783.He was first a hardware dealer, later built important Grist Mill and Bake House exporting products as well as supplying local needs. He was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Halifax county in 1793. He assisted in repatriating Blacks to Sierra Leone as a member of the Sierra Leone company. He had a larbge residence called Poplar Hill. His daughter Hannah married Rev. Charles Ingles, Anglican rector, who after serving in Dartmouth and Sydney, N.S., returned to England where he died in 1862.
Hartshorne married 1st ?? and a second time in 1802 to Abigail Tremain, daughter of his partner in the Mill business. There were children from both marriages, a family of three sons and six daughters. (information from Historical Biographies of Nova Scotians, Peter Landry, Internet.) and Louisa's Diary, diary of a farmer's daughter, that mentions Hartshorne. Hartshorne also mentioned in Douglas Trider, The History of the Dartmouth Quakers, 1985.
