Re: Walter Hartsough
I am the great, great, great-grandaughter of Walter Hartsough. Walter was the father of Nellie Hartsough Crow, mother of Alta Crow O'Boyle, mother of Bondene O'Boyle Rissler, mother of my father, David Rissler. My great-grandmother gave me the book you mentioned and indeed his account of his escape from Andersonville is included. I am also in possession of his discharge papers from the Civil War and a letter he sent to Marie (later his wife) asking if he could court her, and his marriage certificate to her. My family is from Iowa where Walter ran a general store under the firm name of Hartsough and Martin. The beginning of his account in the "Andersonville" book states that he had been living in Genoa, Wayne County, Ia. for ten years when he wrote the letter that was published in the book. The letter was dated May 27, 1879. It states that he began his escape on Dec. 7, 1864.
