Does anybody have any information about the Hartwell family who lived in Cople, Bedfordshire, England? I have got back as far as NAOMI HARTWELL (born 1826), who in 1881 lived in Cople with three of her children: THOMAS (b. 1861), EMILY (1864) and SARAH (1868). Naomi may have been married to a Thomas Hartwell, and may have had six older children, including a daughter, JANE. The women were all lacemakers.

Thomas was my great-great grandfather, and I'd be happy to share what information I have about him. Many thanks.

On a recent visit to Canaan, Vermont, I went to the Canaan Town Hall and obtained a copy of my great grandfather, Adelbert Eugene Ellis', death certificate. It contained some conflicting information.

For Adelbert Eugene Ellis, I have a death certificate saying he was buried in the Village Cemetery in Canaan, on March 28, 1909 but, there is a tombstone in the Coaticook, QC cemetery which bears his name and the correct dates of his birth (18 May 1852) and death. The Canaan, Vermont death certificate lists Sarah Fletcher as his mother. His spouse is listed as Mary A. (Hartwell) Ellis.

There is conflicting information about his father, EC (Ephraim) Ellis as well. In Mount Forest Cemetery in Coaticook, QC, EC (Ephraim) Ellis is buried next to two spouses Electa Buckland, and Sarah S. Stevens. I have Stanstead QC marriage records indicating that EC (Ephraim) Ellis married Sarah S. Stevens on 25 February 1844 and Electa Buckland on 24 March 1863.

It seems the more I find, the deeper the family mystery gets.

Any help members of this list can offer would be appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

David B.
Hartwell and Dawes

There is a William Hartwell on the 1810 Census for Surry, Cheshire Co, NH. Included in the household is a Jeptha Daws/Dawes. According to the LDS this William died in 1814 NH. He may have been married to Polly Dawes and had children: Mille b ca 1799 NH, John b ca 1795 NH and Robert b ca 1797 NH, both of whom went to Genessee Co, NY and then on to Kent Co, MI.
This William Hartwell appears to have been mixed up (Hartwells of America book) with the William Hartwell who went to Indiana and was the son of Joseph Hartwell, or the William who went to Indiana was not the son of Joseph? The William Hartwell who went to Indiana died 1830-1840 in Indiana. Anyone have any information to prove these two William Hartwell men have been joined as one? Thanks

HARTWELLS (of England, N.H. & Mass. - 1777 historical family history item on ebay (ends 6/4)

A friend suggested that I post this notification on Ancestry .com regarding an item I currently have listed on ebay (item # 7418038771). It is an interesting disk of wood which has information written on it regarding John Hartwell's (b. 1753) move from Concord Mass. to Hillsborough, N.H. in 1777. It also lists John's ancestors - William (b. 1600) - Kent, England; Samuel (b.1645) - Concord, Ma.; John (b. 1673) - Concord; Sinion? ( b. 1720); John (b. 1753); William , John's son(b. 1795) - Hillsborough, N.H. The wooden disk was made out of a willow tree that grew out of a walking stick that John used on his way from Concord to Hillsborough. The writing on the disk was done by Clarence H. Hartwell in 1882 (son of Rev. Henry Harrison Hartwell of Allenstown, Ma. - grandson of John Hartwell). I have listed addtional information on the ebay posting . The listing ends June 4th. This information may be of interest to New England Hartwells.

My gggm Marinda Hartwell married Samuel Burgess 2 Jun 1850 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Moved to Utah. Left Samuel and her 5 children, leaving with soldier John Hughes by whom she apparently had 3 more children. 1860 Census for Camp Floyd, Fairfield, Cedar, Utah shows Marinda, 28, NY, with Jno Hughes, 24, blacksmith, NY. Am looking for marriage and death information for Marinda and John Hughes. Would like to correspond with any Hughes descendants of hers.

Esther, Annie, Charlotte

A conundrum in the England 1881 census. My g-g-g-father John Henley is listed as head of household aged 70 at 162 North Street, Brighton, Sussex, with an Esther Hartwell b.1842 and her daughters Annie b.1866 and Charlotte b.1870. All supposedly born in Brighton. Esther Hartwell is listed as 'daughter' and status widow. Therefore presumably Hartwell was her married name. However, can find no other records earlier or later for any of Esther, Annie, or Charlotte. Does anybody have any links ? There is a birth record for an Esther Vine b.1845 in Brighton (in 1838 John Henley married another Esther Vine b.1822 so this is possible if unlikely).
Alternatively Esther, Annie, and Charlotte could be entirely unrelated to John Henley's family. Esther's occupation is listed as housekeeper so maybe that's all she was.

Sarah Hartwell marries Job Shattuck bef. 1772

About the year 1740 there was a negro salve in Groton by the name of Boad, who used to look after the cattle sent up to Groton Gore in the spring to be pastured during the summer. See "The Boundary Lines of Old Groton" p.37. The church records contains the entry of the baptism of Hagar, a servant of William Green, on August 1, 1765. Akin to the subject of slavery in Groton is this item from "The Groton Landmark": Nov. 14, 1885:

"Governor Boutwell has in an old scrap book the following interesting Memorandum:
"August 1856
"Noah Shattuck, esq. informs me that there were eleven slaves in Groton when slavery was abolished, and he mentioned the following names: Chloe Williams, Phillis Cutler, Phillis Sartell, Ichabod Davis, Fanny Borden and William Case. Phineas Wait also owned one slave." Noah Shattuck, a son of Job and Sarah (Hartwell) Shattuck was born on August 30, 1772 and died on September 1858.

I am not related to this family, I was on this site and thought it was quite interesting and wanted to share this with the list.
The link to where this information comes from is listed below.
Joyce

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~massasoit/groton.ht...
I am seeking information about Frank Hartwell of Richmondville, Schoharie County, New York, who was briefly married to my grandaunt Margaret Cassidy in the early 1890s. I understand he made tack and harness.

I would be grateful to learn anything about Frank, his family and his descendants. There was a daughter, Patricia (Lily), from the marriage to Margaret.

Hartwell/Neel Photo Album

My husband received a very old photo album after the death of his uncle that had belonged to Anna Celeste Bales, b. 17 Mar, 1901(who married Arthur Frank Luder.) This album had actually been compiled by Anna's mother, Jessie Nina Hartwell, b. 10 Apr 1874, d/o John Nicholas Hartwell, 10 Apr 1813 (s/o John Hartwelll and Mary Cartwright) and Jane Ellen Neel, b. 27 Sept 1838, (d/o Samuel Meredith Neel and Martha Long Yarnell.) (Neels and Yarnells from Lancaster Co., PA.

Now for the bad news, none of these photos are identified by name but I am sure that I will be able to date a few and can identify where a few of them were taken.

The album begins with a photo of a man and a woman followed on the next page with death notices for John N. Hartwell and Jane Ellen Hartwell. They both died in the Jamestown, Salina, Concordia, KS area, he 28 June, 1895 and she 14 July 1916.

According to Jesse's bible records, her mother Jane had the following siblings: Harry Hartwell; Grace Neel Hartwell; Mariam W. Hartwell; Olive Blanche Hartwell and Corydon C. Hartwell. I'm certain that these are among the photos as they were

The following 5 pages show young adults (5 in all) which may be Jane Hartwell's siblings, four of which were born in or around Bowen, IL Corydon in Marysville, KS.

There is one photo that is imprinted as "Mrs. H.M. Berglof, Concordia, KS", and another titled "J. H. Geiger, Concordia, KS." That might have been the name of the photographer not the lady pictured.

Would anyone related to the Hartwells, especially the given names listed, please contact me.

Searching for any info on my Hartwell line. My grandfather was Marvin Hartwell 1914-1973 married Alma Rita Bell and then Jessie Lee Hendrix. His father was either James Oliver Hartwell or Oliver Hartwell (both names were used). James Oliver(or Oliver) was born 1886 in Mt. Valley Ark. died 1946 in Piggott Ark. Married Mollie Foster. Have document where he states his father died before he was born and his mother when he was 7. His mother remarried an Ingram and had a son before she died. Have a letter that indicates he was raised by a foster mother named Agnes Maddox. Any info appreciated.

My name is Ronnie Hartwell (I use the same e-mail address as Susan - SEELSW@aol.com). I am interested in researching my family history...I am writing in hopes to learn how to access birth, marriage, and/or death records, in Franklin County, Virginia and/or West Virginia. Based on the information I received from Ancestry.com, Silas Hartwell (my great-great grandfather) was married to Mariah Webb in 1842. Their son was Samuel James Henry Hartwell. I would like any information and/or a method to obtain verification of this information.

Harvey J. HARTWELL, b. abt 1856

I have a marriage record in Monroe Co., IA at the home of the bride's parents on February 19, 1891 for Harvey J. HARTWELL, age 35, and Miss Emma SMITH, age 26. Emma was the daughter of Alma and Christiana (FOREMAN) SMITH. There was a daughter, Pansy, born about 1895. I don't know what happened to Harvey or who his family was, but Emma later married in Ottumwa, IA in 1903 and divorced in 1905, Charles L. TREMAIN, then married in Ottumwa in 1906, William Strickland SPONSLER. The 1910 census for Ottumwa shows Wm. S. Sponsler, 40, wife Emma, 45, step-daughter Pansy Hartwell, 15. Does this HARTWELL fit in with any of the families reading this board?

Eva Hartwell dau of Dr. George Hartwell

Eva Hartwell was probably b. about 1895, location unknown. Eva married one Edward F. Murphy, in a location unknown, although Edward graduated from Ohio Northern University and later taught school in Wilson, Kansas; the University of Minnesota and Seward Alaska so they could have married in a number of places. Edward was born in 1895, Turners Falls, MA.

In Edward’s obituary of 1942, his widow Eva Hartwell is mentioned as being the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George N. Hartwell of Jamestown, Kansas. I am seeking information on Eva in order to fill in the blank spaces in my files -- I can remember my parents receiving Christmas cards from Eva even in the 1960s though I have no recollection as to where she was living. Edward was the brother of my grandmother.

Thanks!

Sarah Hartwell's lineage (born 1752), married James Reynolds

I have seen Sarah Hartwell (of Columbia, New York)'s father listed as Abraham Hartwell in several Rootsweb databases. Sarah was married to James Reynolds.

I have seen other databases with Sarah Hartwell, married to James Reynolds, with Peter Hartwell listed as the father, with the lineage back to Jasper Hartwell.

Are these the same Sarah Hartwells? If not, does anyone know the lineage of Abraham Hartwell? Thanks for any help.

Ken Akers
(descendant of Elizabeth Hartwell & Roger Sherman)
Martha Hartwell of NJ

Hello!

I think this may be a shot in the dark, but I'm looking for a Martha Hartwell, who's maiden name was Lord.

In the early 1970's, Martha was living in Livingston, NJ. She was probably around 45-50 years of age at that time.

I'm looking for her because it's possible that she or her family may have the old Lord family Bible. If I could find that, it would be the Holy Grail of my research, as you could imagine!

Please contact me if you have any info on this person.

Thank you!

Mike

? Ruth Cross Hartwell

I am looking for help tracking Ruth Cross Hartwell.
She married a Benjamin F. Perkins in 1848. He was working in Manchester, NH at the Amoskeag Company mills as machinist. They had seven children. She died in 1862 in MA. ..She seems to have had some relation to the family of George C. Corliss, builder of the "famous Corliss engine". Mr Perkins then married a cousin of Ruth Cross Hartwell in Dec. of 1862. Her name was Ellen M. Cross, daughter of Ephraim and Susan Corliss Cross. Any suggestions for a search appreciated.

I am hoping that someone might be able to send me a picture of the limestone home that Peter A. HARTWELL and Mary Sophia (HALL) built in Winnebago, IL in 1848. The home has been restored and the present owner and previous owner would like to write a history on the old home and include pictures of it in the 1800's and now. If anyone might be able to send a picture of the house as it was in the 1800's or early 1900's, I would greatly appreciate it and would be willing to pay for the copy of the picture that you send.

Blessings, Sally J.
