Hartwell/Neel Photo Album

My husband received a very old photo album after the death of his uncle that had belonged to Anna Celeste Bales, b. 17 Mar, 1901(who married Arthur Frank Luder.) This album had actually been compiled by Anna's mother, Jessie Nina Hartwell, b. 10 Apr 1874, d/o John Nicholas Hartwell, 10 Apr 1813 (s/o John Hartwelll and Mary Cartwright) and Jane Ellen Neel, b. 27 Sept 1838, (d/o Samuel Meredith Neel and Martha Long Yarnell.) (Neels and Yarnells from Lancaster Co., PA.

Now for the bad news, none of these photos are identified by name but I am sure that I will be able to date a few and can identify where a few of them were taken.

The album begins with a photo of a man and a woman followed on the next page with death notices for John N. Hartwell and Jane Ellen Hartwell. They both died in the Jamestown, Salina, Concordia, KS area, he 28 June, 1895 and she 14 July 1916.

According to Jesse's bible records, her mother Jane had the following siblings: Harry Hartwell; Grace Neel Hartwell; Mariam W. Hartwell; Olive Blanche Hartwell and Corydon C. Hartwell. I'm certain that these are among the photos as they were

The following 5 pages show young adults (5 in all) which may be Jane Hartwell's siblings, four of which were born in or around Bowen, IL Corydon in Marysville, KS.

There is one photo that is imprinted as "Mrs. H.M. Berglof, Concordia, KS", and another titled "J. H. Geiger, Concordia, KS." That might have been the name of the photographer not the lady pictured.

Would anyone related to the Hartwells, especially the given names listed, please contact me.

There is a tremendous amount of information online re the Hartwell family. Google Hartwell family and it should bring up a website devoted to the Hartwell you and I are research. The line extends back to Wm. Hartwell who came to the America abt 1635. Also, Lyman Densmore compiled the Hartwell Family History which includes about 13 generations. You can access that genealogy through your local library on a site named Heritage Quest....go to the "books" section of the sight and search for Hartwell. That site also has invaluable census records.
Hi, My Mom's maiden name was Hartwell. She grew up in Williamston, Michigan. Her name was Ruth Alice Hartwell, born 10/25/1928, died 1/30/1987. My Grandparents were Harris Elson Hartwell and Mary Norine (Ording) Hartwell. Mom was one of seven children born to Harris and Norine. Mom's siblings were, Joseph Kirby (died at 6 months old), Maurice, Margaret, Robert, Ruth (my Mom), Josephine, and Jeanette. Aunt Josephine and Aunt Jeanette are still alive. I don't know much about my Great-Grandfather, other than he abandoned my Grandfather and his mother when my Grandpa was 2 years old. I was told he ran away with a chorus girl! My Aunt Jeanette still lives on my Grandparents farm in Williamston, Michigan.

When I read Grandpa's obit, it sais her name was Sarah, and that had me confused, I couldn't understand when she was called Belle, then I thought it was because she was a Belcher, then someone sent me a photo of her and John and it had on the back Sarah Isabella, mystery solved. She had John, James, Virgie and Cynthia. Grandpa and his brother Jim married sisters, as I'm sure you well know. Laura and Rachel.

Radine;

There is no charge for the information, could you send me your e mail address and I will be happy to send you copies of the pictures. There is a will on the Jennings County Indiana GenWeb site of a Moses Hartwell (do you know if he is related) that I have transcribed, but this was an earlier document and I have not done the probate book transcriptions yet. I try to contact families of people whose records I find and all I ask is some information I can either keep on file or put on the site to help others that may be searching for the same family. My e mail address is on the Jennings site.

Wondering if your John and Sarah are same as mine? Don't have date for J. & S., but do know where Sarah moved with son, Lorenzo Dow H. Have been searching for ancestors of my "John", legend is that his father came over with Cornwallis, deserted and joined Wahington's troops. Nothing before that as to where in England, his parents, whatever. If you think same J. & S. perhaps I can give you much about Sarah, son Lorenzo Dow, his marriage to Sicily Harriet Hodges, (do have their m. date in Franklin, VA), their move to Ill. and thereafter, my lineage. Happy to share, hopefully, you may have backgound on John's father? Thanks.

I will need to look in my notes for Aletta and Henry's death date. I know Henry died before Aletta. They are buried in the old cemetery on S. Bridge St. in Somerville. I will let you know. I noticed several times in my original post to you that I referred to the name Hartwell as Hartley or Hartlet. In all cases I meant Hartwell. There is also a photo on the internet of Aletta, her son Abram, and her daughter-in-law Lizzie Auten.

Re: Hartwells of new Jersey

Just came across your post which is about seven years old. So I hope you find this message. I have just begun doing some research on the names Hartley and Swan, and very recently discovered the following: A Thomas Hartley (a lawyer in Somerville, NJ), married the daughter of Dr.Samuel Swan, also of Somerville. Dr. Swan practiced medicine in Bound Brook, NJ and later in Somerville. He was also elected to the 17th thru the 21st Congress representing the Somerset County area. Prior to that he was Sheriff of Somerset County. My interest in these names is due to the fact that my great grandmother's middle name was Swan. Her full name was Aletta Swan Vantine Mundy. One of her brothers was named Thomas Hartwell Vantine. I can't help but think there is a connection. I had often wondered where my great grandmother got the name of Swan. I feel certain the name came from The Dr Swan family, but can't quite make the connection. I don't think it is just coincidence that she be named Swan, and her brother be named Thomas Hartlet (Vantine). Anyway, Aletta Swan Vantine married Henry T. Mundy, Sr. Their Son Henry T Mundy, Jr was my father's father. I recently found a photo of Aletta, and also her brother Thomas Hartwell. Any info you can share would be appreciated. Yhank You.
Fred Mundy, Long Beach

I live in the Brome County region of Quebec where everyone from Henry Alvin down the list died and is buried... Let's talk!!! Joanne Croghan Marier
