Most of the Hartz's in the eastern part of US probably came from Germany, but there are/were a large number of Hartz's in the Alsasce area of France. My grandfather was born there and emmigrated to Dubuque, Iowa.
The villages of Kogenheim, Bischoffsheim and Vendenheim in France had quite a few Hartz's. Where they emmigrated to France from is another question.
