Hi, thanks for responding. My paternal grandfather, Robert Stuart Hartz (died 1946), was the son of Belle Hartz and Charles Gridley. Nothing is known about Charles Gridley except that it is thought he came from NY state. Robert was raised by his maternal grandmother, and was given her last name (Hartz). Nothing is known about the maternal grandmother or grandfather except that the grandfather may have died in the Civil War. There is some mention of the grandmother being a war widow.
I don't believe the time lines would work for our being related. I'm not at home now so I can't access my geneology charts but it sounds like your Belle may have been born later than my great grandmother (or her mother, who also was named Belle).
Ironically, my brother dated a girl in high school who later married a man named Ed Pennel. They now live in the area of Keuka (Syracuse?) area of NY and manage a vineyard.
Thanks again and good luck in your searching.
