Hi! I'm a direct descendent of Alfred Hartz and Barbara Steiger. I understood he was born in Germany, so would appreciate more exact info on him and his parents, grandparents, exact place they came from, etc.
They had 9 children: Elizabeth (m. Edward Restemayer 1905, she died in 1941; Edward d. in 1949); Mary; John (my grandfather: b.1889, m. Clara Restemayer 1920; she died in 1955, and he died in 1983);Ernst, Jacob, Lydia (m. John Elgert, and she died in auto accident in Canada--in '60's, I believe); Alfred, Carol (m. John Elgert some time after her sister Lydia died); and Edward.
In 1935 Alfred and Barbara Hartz celebrated golden wedding anniversary--I have photo.
Alfred died in 1937; Barbara died in 1953, when I was 7. I remember her very well. I have a picture of her taken in 1942.
My grandfather John Hartz married Clara Restemayer; his sister Elizabeth had married Clara's brother Edward.
The only other information I received from my mother was that ggfather Alfred came from a large family, they had hard times, and he was apprenticed as a blacksmith to one of his older brothers. At 17, he ran away from home and migrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. Barbara Steiger was born in the area of the Ukraine or Bersola(Bersala?), Russia--which may have been the same thing. Her family was of German ascendency. Her family migrated to Canada in 1889 when she was a young woman. I don't have an exact birth date for her, but think she was born around 1860. That I know of, she had 2 brothers and a sister: Henry, Peter, and Mary Magdalina (I know that her brother Peter was born in 1869, and her sister Mary Magdalina was born in 1877. I do not have a birth date for Henry, so don't know if he was older than Barbara, or younger. Barbara's family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they lived 6 months, then moved to Sasktchewan where they lived for 3 years, then returned to Winnipeg. Mary Magdalina married George Geib in 1896 and immediately moved to Pembina from where they moved in 1899. I do know that my grandfather John Hartz was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba; I assume the Canadian records would give us the info we need.
Alfred and Barbara moved their family to the United States in 1891--to Cavalier, North Dakota. He farmed and did blacksmithing.
My mother was Evelyn, second daughter of John and Clara Hartz. In distance, we lived closer to N. Dakota than to Neb/Iowa, where my dad was from. So we met most of my mother's family at one time or another.
Any info you may have I would appreciate getting. I look forward to hearing from you.
