I think I have finally figured out the links between Iona Hartzell and the Van Burens and Cunninghams. This is what I have so far.

The Ancestry.com reading of the 1900 Federal Census for Greene Co., PA (8-Jun-1900) has a "Ponia" Hartzell, age 19 (b. Dec. 1880) as the daughter of Lindsey Hartzell. Looking at the actual record and other names (Ida) it appears that "Ponia" is actually "Ionia".

On June 11, 1905, an Iona Hartzell married a Charles Van Buren in Marshall County, WV.
This was the last reference I found to Charles Van Buren.

The 1910 Federal Census for Marshall County, WV (15 Apr 1910) lists a William Cunningham with a wife ONA and two stepchildren, Ruth and Leo. According to the census, it is his 1st marraige and her 2nd. He is 24 and she is 29. These ages fit with my great-grandfather Wm. Albert Cunningham (b. 13-Apr-1886) and the Ionia Hartzell from the 1900 Census.

On 29-Jan-1911 my grandmother Mary Louvisa Cunningham was born to Wm. A. Cunningham and Iona Cunningham in Sherrard, WV according to her birth certificate. According to my mother, Iona died when my grandmother was still an infant.

The April 17th, 1911 "Wheeling Intelligencer" has an obituary for a Mrs. Olie Cunningham who died in Sherrard, WV the previous Friday (14 April 1911) and left three children, Ruth, Leo, and Mary.

According to my great-grandmother's death certificate, she died 14 April 1911 in Sherrard, WV at the age of 30.

The 1920 Federal Census for Greene Co., PA (5-8 Jan 1920) now shows a grand-daughter Ruth VanBuren, age 13, living with Lindsey Hartzell.
The 1920 Federal Census for Braxton Co., WV (4 Jan 1920) now shows Wm Cunningham with his new wife Gay and a daugher Mary, age 9. According to my mother, her great-grandfather remarried and moved to Braxton Co. WV.

From the above, I am pretty confident that Iona Hartzell (my great-grandmother) is the daughter of Lindsey Hartzell of Greene Co. PA. She married Charles VanBuren in 1905 and married Wm. Cunningham sometime prior to April 1910. She had three children, Leo, Ruth, and Mary. She died shortly after giving birth to Mary (~2 1/2 months). Her daughter Mary went to live with her biological father. Ruth went to live with her biological grandfather. It's unclear what happened to Charles Van Buren or Leo. According to the 1910 Census, Leo was born around 1901. Since she didn't marry Van Buren until four years later, I don't know if Leo is Charles's son or not.

If anybody has any loose ends or other comments, please let me know.

Also, I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has photos of Lindsey Hartzell's family, particularly Iona.

Thanks.
Greg Rockwell
