My grandfather, William M. Hartzell, Jr., was born May 13, 1920. I have the 1920 and 1930 Census added to my tree. By 1930, William the father had disappeared. I beleive that Aunt Toots may have been adopted by William the father, but Muriel was her mother. My mother, who spend her youth living in Michigan and Augusta, Georgia, said she never knew William the father, but remembered Grandma Muriel, pronounced Merle. My mother's middle name is Muriel. My grandfather, who died in Jan 1999 always said his father's middle name was McKinley. My email address is tdegennaro@aiken.k12.sc.us. That is a better way for me to communicate.

Parents: William M. Hartzell, Sr. and Muriel Perry
Sons: William M. Hartzell, Jr. (My grandfather) and Lorne J.
Hartzell

Neither of the sons were adopted. They were noth born in Pontiac. I have a picture of the two brothers and sister from when my grandmother, William's wife, died in 1980. Easy to tell they are all related.

The only strange relation is Patricia Elaine Opal May Hartzell. This would be my great aunt Tootsie. She was Muriel's daughter, but her father was not William Sr. Her father was a man named Patsy Morelli. Since she was illigitimate, everyone was told that she was Muriel's sister.

My grandfather always talked about a third brother, George, that died as a child. My grandfather died in 1999.

Check out my tree: DeGennaro Family Tree.

They sufferred many hardships on this journey west and making a home was tough in this Prairie State. *6 CHILDREN: 1) Julia Anna KETCHAM (1835-1868 IL); 2) Edward Wagner (1837-1901 IL); 3) Sarah Ann COZAD (1839-1878 IL); *4) Susan WAGNER (1842-1933 IL) m: 1865 Henry L. HITTLE (1837-1884); 5) Adam Wagner (1845-1850 buried at Arndt's cemetery w/ his mother & Wagner grandparents); & 6) Elizabeth BONE (1847-1936 IL). Tombstone was broken and hard to read in 1993 I could read Maria ... d: 1849 37Y 5M 28d w/o Abraham Wagner, Cemetery Book has her death as 1819. Diggers BeWARE GRAVE Errors. Thank heavens we found a Burial Record for her, which tells it all. Her father names her 1854 in his will as deceased gives her spouse & her five children. Plus on my great-grandmothers baptism in the German Reformed congregation in Easton it even gives her mother's maiden name of Hartzell. I love it when a plan comes together! Wooozer!

My grandmother, Margaret Hartzell Walker, was Elmer's sister. He disapeared to our family sometime in the 1950's and we spent years trying to find him. I did find his SS death notice online, which stated that he passed away in Orange County California. I know that he was born in November and was in WWII. He fought in the battle of the bulge where his feet froze and he was taken off the line. I do have a few snap shots of him in our family pictures somewhere and would be glad to share copies with you. I also have photos of his parents and grandparents. His Dad's name was Whiley Dexter Hartzell and his mother was Cora Blanche Magers. She went by Blanche. she died when Elmer was young. There were several children in that family, Elsie, Margaret, william, and Elmer and I believe Elmer was the baby of the family. Please let me konw if you get this as I would like to know more about how we are related and what happened to Uncle Elmer once he disappeared from us. My mother and Uncles, all who knew him well are still living and might be a great source of information for you.

Found a lot more on John Hartzell (son of Adam Hartzell and father of Elmer Hartzell) in Ancestry.com World Tree entries published by William Johnson. Read and enjoy:

ID: I46494
Name: Adam HARTZELL
Sex: M
Change Date: 07 SEP 2007
Note:
Adam HARTZELL(2479) was born on 6 Apr 1809 in Menallen Township, Adams Co, Pa. He appeared on the census on 5 Sep 1850 in Franklin Township, Des Moines Co, Ia. (2480) He appeared on the census on 10 Jul 1860 in Franklin Township, Des Moines Co, Ia.(2481) Miller He appeared on the census on 15 Jun 1880 in Franklin Township, Des Moines Co, Ia. (2482) Occupation: Farmer. He died on 14 Sep 1890 in Franklin Township, Des Moines Co, Ia. (2111) At the time of his death, was living on the farm "eight miles out on the Dodgeville road. His affliction was dysentery". According to "___ Daily Gazette", Burlington, Iowa, Monday evening September 15, 1890.

Was age 81y 5m 8da at time of death.

Per Des Moines County Register of Deaths, #2, we learn that the cause of death was Dysentery, complicated by Typl...., duration of illness was two days.

From the Burlington Iowa "Hawkeye" Tuesday 16 Sept 1890, page 3, column 4.
Another pioneer of Des Moines county has passed away. The ranks of the old settlers are rapidly thinning. Last Sunday, Adam hartzell died at his home in Franklin township, eight or nine miles west of Burlington on the Dodgeville road. He was eighty-one years of age and for the last few years had been too feeble to take any active part in the work of his farm, where he had resided so long a time. Recently he had an attack of dysentery and he succumbed to the disease which his enfeebled system could not resist.
Mr. Hartzel was a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1809 and came to Iowa in 1840. He was an industrious, thrifty man, honest conscientious and fair in his dealings with his fellow men. He was always held in high esteem by his neighbors and his death brought out a large concourse of citizens in attendance upon the funeral, which occurred Monday afternoon.
He was buried on 15 Sep 1890 in Franklin Mills Cemetery, Des Moines Co, Ia. (2483) He was christened in Upper Bermudian Church, Adams Co, Pa.(250)
Merged General Note:
Was a miller and millwright by profession, having learned the trade under his father. Moved to Iowa by boat, arriving in June 1844. Bought a 70 acre farm in September 1844 in Franklin Township. In 1850, he became manager and miller at a mill owned by Franklin Mills Flour Mills. In 1855 he became manager of the Kossuth mill for Heizer & Cox. In 1861, he took up farming again because his sons Adam and Randall had gone to fight in the Civil War.

1860 Census gives value of real estate as $1400, personal estate as $800.

1840 Census Name appears on page 286 as living in Newport Borough. Lists the family as being made up of 2 males 5 or under (John and Randall), 1 male 20-30 (Adam), 1 female 20-30 (his wife Catharine) and 1 female 15-20 (a boarder). Gives Adam's occupation as "navigation of canals, lakes and rivers".

A letter written to me by Mrs. Ruth E. Johnson, 8942 NW 35th, Silver Lake, Ks 66539 on 15 Sep 1993 quotes the following "A letter written April 10, 1882 by Colonel John Hartzell of Newport, Perry County, Pa to Rev J. C. Hartzell says--information received from my father and uncle Henry--My great grandfather, John George Jr. emigrated to America before the Revolutionary war. He settled in Northampton County. He had seven sons, six located in different parts of Pa as follows: George, my g. father, located in Adams county on the Opossum Creek eleven miles north of Gettysburg. He had six sons. All of them with the exception of my father and my uncle Jacob lived and died in or near the old homestead.
My uncle Jacob went west somewhere about 1820, to Ohio. He had two sons, Jesse and Josiah. My father came to Perry county in 1823 where 2 of my brothers, Samuel and Michael and myself still reside. My brother Adam went to Iowa in 1844 where he still resides.
My grandfather's six brothers located as follows: one remained with his father in Northampton county. Nathan purchased land in Luzern county, Pa, near Wiles-Barre. another brother settled in Northampton county, one was named Adam. One of the two was a bachelor."

From "Biographical Review of Des Moines County, Iowa", pages 1039-1040
Adam Hartzell, deceased, was a son of John and Mary (Row) Hartzell, and was born in Menallen township, Adams county, Pa., April 6, 1809. His father, who was a miller by trade, died in June 1828, and his mother passed away in November, 1838. Their large family of children were educated in the common schools of their native county.
Adam followed the milling business from the time of his father's death till 1861, when he moved from Newport, Perry county, Pa., to Iowa, and settled in Des Moines county, near Burlington April 18, 1844. He carried on farming and stock-raising with much success, and was an enterprising citizen.
May 21, 1833, he married Miss Catherine A. McAllister, who was a daughter of Alexander McAllister, and was born in Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1816. She was one of ten children. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Hartzell theirteen children have been born, six of whom are living: Randall M., Adam R., and Samuel T., of Peru, Kansas; Mrs. S. M. Lines, Sophia M. and Austin L. of Des Moines county, Iowa.
Mr. Hartzell was a Republican, but never an office seeker. He and his wife were members of the Methodist church. This upright and highly respected couple lived to ripe old age, both being over eighty years old at the time of their deaths. Mr. Hartzell died September 14, 1890 and Mrs. Hartzell's death occurred April 15, 1905.

From "The History of Des Moines County, Iowa", 1879
Listed as farming Section 34 of Franklin Township and as being served by the Dodgeville post office.

From the 1856 Iowa State Farm Census, pages 1198 and 1199, comes the following information. Children John, Randel, Adam, Mary, Sophia, Samuel and Michel are listed. Adam's occupation is given as miller, and owner of land. The following agricultural statistics are also given for him: Acres of improved land: 30. Acres of unimproved land: 116. Acres in meadow: 3. Tons of hay: 3. Acres of spring wheat: 11. Bushels harvested: 156. Acres of oats: 7. Bushels harvested: 200. Acres of corn: 4. Bushels harvested: 500. Acres of potatoes: 1. Bushels harvested: 50. Pounds of butter manufactured: 260. Pounds of wool: 30. Value of domestic manufactures: 30. Compared with the two other families listed on the same page, Adam's farm output was much less.
Finally found more on Elmer in 1880 & 1870 census. Difficult to find because they were actually indexed in Ancestry.com under the name Hustziee.

In 1880, Elmer was living with his parents in Chicago:

1880 Chicago, Cook, IL District 106
[13 North Troop St]
Hartzell, John A., w m 45 head m Grain Inspector PA PA PA
Beatrice, w f 38 wife m keeps house OH PA NY
Elmer, w m 19 son s clerk IA PA NY
Martha, w f 17 dau s at home IL PA NY
Nichols, R.H., w m 23 boarder Telegraph IL NY NY

The 1870 census is kinda odd. Elmer's father, John is not listed but Beatrice and kids are living with a Drake family in Mad River, Ohio. Suspect John may have been away on a job or looking for work elsewhere.

1870 Mad River, Clark, OH
Drake, Jacob, 52 m w farmer PA
Catherine, 56 f w keeping house OH
Hertzel, Beatrice, 27 f w Assists in House OH
Elmer, 9 m w Attends school IA
Martha, 7 f w Attends school IA
Fryant, Pierce, 17 m w farm laborer OH

I hope this is the Elmer you're looking for.

David,

I thought I sent the letter to you, perhaps it was someone else. I will forward a copy of the letter. Do you have the Collection of the Sebring family. I bought the book through the internet. It's about 600 pages. If there are any ancestors that you have interest on the Sebring side, I can send you copies of the pages. There are some references to the Hartzell's too.

I had emailed you before regarding your pictures which you had given me permission to use, I hope that is still the case.

My father was named after Philip Hartzell. It was a real treat to actually see a picture of him.

Send me your email address and I will send the letter, if you don't have a copy.

Robyn
