Re: William Harvey of Boston, MA, daug. Experience Harvey m. to Jonathan Briggs, 1600's. Joan Hucker??

The preceding posted information is correct as far as is known by me - although Y-DNA testing has shown a discrepancy between the Y-Haplogroups of "supposed" brothers William Harvey b. 1614 (the father of the subject of these postings) and Thomas Harvey b. 1617 both long-time residents of Taunton, MA.

William Harvey and Joane Hucker lived and had four of their five children while residing in Boston between 1639 and 1646/1647 or so after which they moved to Taunton. Date of death for William Harvey was 1691 - Joane (Hucker) Harvey's death date is unknown.

One small addition that I believe can be added to the foregoing is:

Experience Harvey b. 1644, dau of William Harvey and Joane Hucker is thought to have first married in 1666 Jonathan Briggs b. 1645 - they had one child, Hopestill Briggs b. 1667 before father Jonathan Briggs died.

Experience next married her 1st cousin Thomas Harvey b. 1643 abt 1668 and they had six children. This Thomas Harvey d. in Taunton in 1726; Experience d. in 1719.

How goes the confusion?

Bill Harvey

You are on the right track. Suggest you read the Harvey Book by Oscar Jewell Harvey which can be found digitized online. Search on Google. First 2 parts are all about the Harveys. (I found the next part, but there is no additional Harvey information.) William of Taunton lived in Boston for a time where some of his children were born. He married Joanna Hucker (Joane, Joana)and I found no indication that he remarried another. Children were Abigail, Thomas, Experience, Joseph, and Jonathan. There was another William Harvey who married Martha Copp. Many family trees have mixed these two families adding to the confusion. Again, read the Harvey Book which has a good explanation.

I am related to a Alexander A Harvey born 1808 in Allen, KY on my mothers side, Alexander named a son John G Harvey b.1838, the John Harvey you mentioned who could be father of William, fits the timeline being b. 1778. John G Harvey also named one of his sons William. It appears the possibility exists that William Harvey b.1804 and Alexander A. Harvey could be brothers. Let me know what you think and if you find out anymore, I will do the same.

Re: William Harvey of Chadd's Ford

William Harvey's brats, listen up! Our ancestor is from Lye, not Lyd. Lydd is over on the east coast of England, near the Channel. You will never see our family listed as coming from Lyd before the 1870s as that is when the mistake started to appear and is being copied even today. This one family tradition we need to end. Our family has been traced back to Richard who was the father of Francis. Francis is the Quaker who ended up in prison in Worcester in 1660 for not swearing an oath to the king of England. When he died in 1711 his son, William, jumped the pond the next year and ended up in Philly, eventually Chadds Ford.

Isaac is the only Harvey we know that fought in the Revolution. He was living in NC by then and in his fifties. One of our clan, William, is credited with helping Washington escape the Brits at the end of the Battle of the Brandywine. This was discovered in a letter by Samuel Ring II to his cousin. His grandfather, Benjamin, was the one who let Washington use his house as headquaters during the battle and was originally asked to lead the Continental Army out of the Brandywine. He declined and suggested William Harvey. This is not the William who was guarding the Harvey estate on the west side of the Brandywine until Proctor's artillery nearly took his leg off with a cannonball. It was not the British that shot the cannon. They were too busy ransacking the Harvey house and hiding the remote.

Re: Agnes HARVEY

You may email me directly at mcleodofmchenry@yahoo.com
My 2 main sources are from Arnold K Stewart, Sr who started compiling the tree many years ago. He has it as family legend the shipwreck of John Stewart, loss of wife at sea, John swimming ashore with 3 sons, and being taken in by Dr. Josiah Harvey, a minister where he met his daughter Agnes.
Other main source being the Harvey Book which is digitized online. Only discrepancy in working from it is the date of Josiah's birth which is understandable since that is the period in which the records for Taunton were destroyed. Loren Gardner documented her findings on Roots Web in 1999 about the mother of Josiah. Her parents died when she was young and she must have gone to live with the Hutchins or Hucker family and that name got attached to her. She was the daughter of John Woodward. (The Harvey Book was published in 1899 and history was rewritten based on what people could remember.) Josiah's mother was born in 1687.
I have found the Stewart Clan magazine has a lot of misleading ideas. It was based on some facts and some assumptions. I can not make a connection from John Stewart to anyone here in the states prior to his arrival. This is getting long....please, email me directly. I would love to work with you. I think I found info on Daniel.

Re: Agnes HARVEY

I'm still leaning toward my previous thoughts. Family records list Josiah as the father of Agnes. She was born in 1717. She married John Stewart in Brimfield and they both died in Granville. These places have strong links to the Soc of Friends (Quakers). Many of the Scotch-Irish went to Palmer. Their son John Harvey Stewart moved to Granville, NY, another Quaker area. The Stewart Clan magazine has correct information on pg 207, however, the assumption of being related to other Stewarts in the area is not proven. If John had relations in the colonies, he would have gone to them when he was shipwrecked and lost his wife rather than to the Harveys. I do appreciate your response and would love to research this more and compare notes. My direct email is: mcleodofmchenry@yahoo.com I did find an Anna Davis m to a John Harvey, son of William Harvey of Boston (not one of the brothers - Thomas and Wm who were of Taunton and Boston). There was no Agnes listed with her children according to New England families, genealogical and memorial: a record of the ..., Volume 3. Besides, she was born 1714 in Amesbury...not old enough.

Sorry about your loss, Marie. Was your brother the gentleman that is interviewed on the site I mentioned? I remember the man mentioning Kersey Harvey of Kennett Square and his daughter who married one of her students. She was killed during WWII after accidently stepping in front of a speeding car. I think she was involved in the Harvey genealogy too.

I guess you've been to read all the Harvey items at the West Chester Historical Society. There is a bunch of items down at the Delaware Historical Society in Chester, PA too.

I have a website, The Amazing Ellwood Harvey, at Yahoogroups if you care to join up. It's free and no spam will come your way, but Yahoo does make you sign up before you get onto the actual site. There is The Harvey Geneaologist site too. I have a family tree put up there under Team One William Harvey. A member of the Pusey family has a family tree that I have added bits too. If you want to use the email address I send you some attachments of various things. Do you know your lineage back to William the Pioneer? Always looking for Harvey photos. Did you know we are related to Leroy Harvey, mayor of Wilmington, DE and husband of one of the Dupont girls? We are not related to Dr. William Harvey of the circulatory fame. He never had kids!

Steve Harvey

Suffering of the Quakers

Marie,

The whole reason William came over to the colonies was due to the way our ancestor, Francis, was treated by the English. We are from Lye (not Lyd) which is in Worcestershire, England. The Quakers refused to pledge an oath to anyone other than God so they kept getting thrown in prison. William must have hung around to take care of Francis (who died in 1711). Once dad was gone he headed over to Philly and then Chadds Ford. Check out the online site for Ashmead's History of Delaware County (add Battle of Brandywine) and you'll get a quick version of the Harvey House during the battle. I just got copies of the Ben Ring letters in which he tells the story of a William Harvey leading Washington and the troops out of Chadds Ford when they realized the battle had been lost.
However, the story of Dr. Ellwood Harvey (my g,g,g grandfather and the one who converted my branch from Quakerism to Episcopalianism) and his rescue of Anne Maria Weems is fascinating. The Philadelphia Inquirer did a photo essay on the whole adventure in 1938, but it's also in several books: The History of the Underground Railroad by William Still; Stealing Freedom by Elisa Carbone; Free by Lorne Cary; and Shadow Over the Household by Bryan Prince. Anne was the youngest person to travel the UGRR. They dressed her up like a boy in 1855 and switched her into Ellwood' buggy right in front of the White House. She eventually made it to Canada. Ellwood got $300 from an abolitionist society (as opposed to the $500 reward the slave master was offering) which he used to buy a dissection mannequin for the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. BTW, if you go to the Walt Whitman House in Camden you'll see a first edition of Leaves of Grass that use to belong to Ellwood too!

Steve

Actually it's the other way around, Issac, was the son of William. Issac was the only Harvey to fight in the Revolution (in his 50s no less) and to move away from the area (down to VA and NC). Most Harveys you meet from the rest of America are descendants of him. His grandchildren left the south because of slavery. One opened the first school for black children in 1830 in Ohio. Google Harveysburg, Ohio for more details.

Hi cousin,

Yes, we're related. William came over in the spring of 1712 with the Osbornes. Peter Osborne died three months later and left Judith with four kids. William ended up marrying her in 1714 and built the William Harvey House (google it and Chadd Ford Historical Society). My father moved within a mile of the house in the 1980s, but never knew the connection.
I can send you a jpg. of William and Judith's graves at Kendal Friends Meeting if you can get photos. My regular email is harvey1954@yahoo.com. I've been busy collecting Harvey info since 2005 as I knew very little about our family.
There is a website that has an interview with a Jack Harvey (not sure of the first name) from West Chester. It was part of West Chester University's project on the town. Are you related to him?
My main focus is on Dr. Ellwood Harvey and his contribution to the first college for female doctors. He was also invovled in the UGRR.
We had a Harvey reunion a couple of years ago, but will have another in 2015 for the three hundredth anniversary of the William Harvey House.

Thanks for responding,

Steve Harvey

PS - I've pushed back the family tree two generations in the English side of the family. Richard is the eldest Harvey I've found and his son, Francis, was a Quaker thrown in jail for refusing to take an oath to the king. When he died his son, William, came over to Chadd's Ford. I guess you know all about the Battle of Brandywine and the Harvey House getting it from both armies.

Harvey Family in Pittsylvania Co., VA-1700s and 1800s

I see from some other posts on the Harvey family in Pittsylvania Co., VA that a John Harvey married a Nancy Lewis (born about 1773), and that a Plotemia Harvey/Harvie apparently married a Samuel Lewis (born by 1763....Samuel may very well have been Nancy Lewis' brother).

There was a Charles Robert Lewis (born 1869) who married a Laura Williams Duffer in the 1890s in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and their first son was named Henry Harvey Lewis (born in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1899). Based on that middle name, I wonder if Charles Robert Lewis was a descendant of Samuel Lewis and Plotemia Harvey? Comments on any of these people? Thanks!

Some posts claim that John Harvey and his wife Nancy Lewis moved to KY. is that correct, and if so, did she return to VA before she married her second husband? Thanks.

So nice to hear from you so quickly. I just joined Ancestry.com about 2 weeks ago and have been on the computer toooo long researching. Yes I am related to Jack Harvey. I have a print out of the interview. His grandparents are my Uncle Lon and Aunt Eva. I believe you know more about the Harvey's than I do. No, I don't know about the Battle of the Brandywine and the Harvey House. Sounds interesting. Hope to hear so more about the Harvey's. Please keep in touch.
Marie Rissmiller-nivjude2425@comcast.net I live in Berks Co., originally from Honey Brook, Chester Co.

Humphrey Harvey b.1459 Kent?>Turner Harvey b. 1485 : Any descendants in UK, AUS, NZ ??

The Harvey Y-DNA surname project has successfully combined documented paper genealogies with matching Y-DNA test results of five living descendants of two sons of Immigrant Ancestor Thomas Harvey b.1617 in Somersetshire, ENG, who came to Dorchester, Mass in 1636.

The two sons of Thomas b. 1617 who have known living descendants are Thomas Harvey b. 1643 in Taunton, MA, and William Harvey b. 1645 also in Taunton, MA. These living descendants are scattered across North America.

Immigrant Ancestor Thomas Harvey b. 1617 was the son of Thomas Harvey b. 1585 in Ashill, Somersetshire who d. bef. 1647 also in Ashill, Somersetshire. This Thomas Harvey was the gr-gr-grandson of Humphrey Harvey.

This accomplishment was set out as one of the primary goals of our Y-DNA project which was begun in the spring of 2004.

Another primary goal was to connect with living relatives who did not come to North America but remained in the UK or migrated to other locales.

If anyone believes they connect to this line we would welcome hearing from you and discussing the possibility of adding you to this group of Harveys.

I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about this exciting advance in our Harvey research.

Bill Harvey
Administrator for the Harvey Surname Project hosted at FTDNA.
This is purely a volunteer effort with no remuneration or benefits received from any entity.
PICTURE

I was going through my Harvey pictures and found an old picture of 3 women. I had purchased this picture thinking that it may be one of my Harvey's, however, that is not the case. It is of 3 women, back is labeled Mrs.Storms, Bertha Harvey, Daisy Dodge. The man I purchased this from was from Alabama, but the picture could be from anywhere. The picture looks to be from about 1900 or so, give or take a few... I am looking to find this card's family.
