Hassell Family Role in the Settlement of the "Sufferers' Land"

My blog, The Firelands History Blog, at http://firelands.wordpress.com, tells the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. One of the early settlers of the Firelands was Lucy Preston, who came to Ohio from New Hampshire in 1819 with her parents and brother. Her story is a major part of this history.

Lucy was a descendent of Richard Hassell, who settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts around 1643. I have posted on The Firelands History Blog a genealogy showing the descent from Richard Hassell to Lucy Preston. This genealogy was compiled by my great-grandmother and grandmother from 1910 to 1977.

I post an episode of the history of the “Sufferers’ Land” on my blog every Monday and will continue until October. My fondest wish is that people interested in the history of the Hassell family and other Firelands pioneers will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.

Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy the genealogy of Richard Hassell and my story of the early pioneers of the “Sufferers’ Land.”

Regards,
Dave Barton

My Grandfather James Richard HASSALL was married to a
Catherine Thompson also from Staffordshire, England.
There was a son born William R. Hassall September 21,
1899 in England. Wife and son followed James to
the USA. James went by way of Canada then emigrated into
USA either before or right after William was born. You may
be able to find his Birth record as a help to identify
the family. Sorry I don't have more information. I really
do appreciate all your help. I have been beating this stone wall for a long while. Thanks, Dave Sends

I have searched through my tree for James Hassall 1880 and the only possible candidate i have found is a James Hassall from Nantwich, which is fairly closeby.

I am researching Hassalls from the Stone and Stafford Areas at the moment. My grandfather, William Hassall(1925), was son of William Hassall (1890) and Mary Turner (c1900).

I have a varied amount of info on the Hassall clan from that area, but am looking to expand. If anyone can help by sending me their info from Hassall relatives from the Staffordshire Area i will be more than happy to help piece together what i can.

Please include as much information as you possibly can if you want my help, and email mzy_x_90@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks Lesley
I had seen his name on freebmd and wondered. How did you get his burial date and address?
I believe there are a number of other possible James Hassells on freebmd deaths, but if you have any special access to St Andrews, Holborn is there a way you can see if there are any burials on a possible wife for James, perhaps an Elizabeth Hassell in or round 1838?

Alexanders son by Hannah Millward was baptised James at St Andrews in 1835 so it is a good candidate for a "family" church. Other children followed baptised there.

Thanks very much.

- Richard

I discovered a David Hassell of Stone,Staffodshire,England born abt.1825. He married Elizth ? abt 1848 & had 2 children, Elizth born 1849 Lowton,Staffordshire & Thomas born 1856 Kensington,Middlesex. Thomas Hassell may be my great grandfather who came to Ireland. Information obtained from the 1861 England census. Don't worry about spellings, I have come across Hasslet when it was clearly Hassell.

My Grandfather James Richard Hassall was according to what
he told me from Staffordshire, England. He imigrated to
Canada and then to the United states and then brought his
wife Kathern (Thompson) Hassall and his Son William Richard
Hassall to the US. My Father James Richard Hassall was born in Ohio. My grandfather here work in the Potteries making Sculptured Pottery pieces but I don't know what he did in England. I run into a Brick wall every time I try to track his family in England, But I keep trying.

The dates I have in my Family Tree Maker is:
My grandfather:
James Richard Hassall born January 24, 1880
His wife:
Catherine Thompson born 1881
His son:
William R. Hassall born September 21,1899
From these dates he must have imigrated to Canada shortly before or right after William was born. AS William was about 8 years old when my Dad was born. Sorry information
is so limited. It may also be incorrect as I was only about
14 years old when he told it to me. As a Kid I wasn't really too interested about that kind of stuff.
thanks for that. it is interesting to hear the St.John name. My family history over there in Ireland is still quite vague, but I have discovered a hassell-rock connection and a link to the Curtin name too.
It seems difficult to find information unless you visit Ireland, and one day, I aim to do that!
Good luck with your search. I will look into Thomas Hassell connection.

UI'm still unsure of the Hssell line. I know that Richard Hassell's father was Jacob Hassell b 1870 and his mother was Mary Anne Curtin(Limerick?)
I also know that Amelia's father was Edward Hassell and her mother was Margaret Rock.
We believe that Edward and Jacob Hassell were brothers and that their father was Isaac Hassell.
Other than that I am well in the dark about connections to a Thomas Hassell although I'm sure your Thomas Hassell will be some connection somewhere.......

Samuel Hassell-Cherokee connection

On my GG Grandmother Martha Catherine Hassell's side or her husband,my gg grandfather Robert Brown Bradford's side there were rumors of Indians. Supposedly, one of the females belonged to Chief White Eagle of the Cherokee tribe. But then, how many are they?

My mom assumed it was on the Bradford side, but it is more likely on the Hassell side. My ggg Martha's father probably married an Indian woman. I can find no trace of him, Samuel Hassell who was b. 1804 in Hickman TN then moved to Izard Co. AR.around 1841. Martha (my ggg) was born in AR 1842. But there is no more mention of Samuel, and no record of who he married...thus my reason for thinking she was Indian. There was a Cherokee village in AR near them, but I don't know if he lived there or not. Any info I can find out about these people would help me greatly. Thanks for your time.
Jan (jrdane@gmail.com)

According to Pallots Index to Marriages 1780-1837 (and this is by NO MEANS a complete list of marriages), there is a marriage between a James HASSELL and an Elizabeth KELSEY in 1810 at St Bride. Given it seems to be in the right time frame and geographically close to St Pancras, thought it might be a possibility.

FYI Pallot has Alexanders marriage as 1834 (it looks like Alex. B Hassell, but as it is handwritten, it might be the R of Alexander).

Hope this is of interest

Regards
Lesley
Melbourne, Australia
