I'm looking for information on Marshall Hastings. He was the son of S Clinton Hastings of Napa California in the mid/late 1800s. He was killed as a young man in a horse accident. My great great great grandmother was his daughter. She was only 2 or 3 when he died. I'd appreciate any information available.

James Barron Hastings (Nairn)

Following my previous request, I have received a very helpful e-mail advising me of two generations prior to my fathers, back to his Grandmother born in 1807(ish). However, My fathers Grandfather had Five sons, Robert, James, Hugh, Alexander, and William, but I have no clue as to which is my Grandfather. It also introduces another Name: Main. Prior to my Father his line for at least three generations were known as Main Hastings. I would appreciate any information on that name and connections. So now I am still trying (early days) to go back up the Hastings line, but am also interested in Surnames: Main, Barron & Still. My Fathers family address in Nairn was 28 Union Street. Although my correspondent also found another address at 36 King Street. I note a lot of Hastings coming out of Old Deer in Aberdeen, and wondered if they were in any way connected.
DNA Testing

Ancestry.com has reduced the cost of DNA testing to 50% until September 30, 2008. I urge members of the Hastings family here and any abroad to send for a paternal lineage Y-DNA 46 test and send it in. You don't need to have a subscription to Ancestry.com to take the test and get results. A group can be created on Ancestry.com for the various Hiestand/Haston/Hasten/Hastings etc. surnames. You'll also be noitified by email via Ancestry.com of any matches. I think this will help tie the various strands together or dispell some of the origination myths. Thanks!

Roger Hastings

Looking for Hastings connections. Families might have come over just about the famine time frame (<1850) to Liverpool. Three lines went to America, but at least one stayed in Liverpool, Edward (fa: Michael Hastings, mo: Bridget Stewart), who married Ellen Reynolds in 1851 and had a large family. Other references in Census show other Hastings with references to County Mayo, also, but not sure the relationship.

John Hastings (obit) d: 1883 KS - came to KS from IN

A Sudden Death.

John Hastings, aged 32 years, of Reno township, had been ailing for about 3 months. His physician had been to see him last Thursday afternoon and pronounced him better. Mr. H. was felling weak but in no particular pain when the doctor left at 3:30 p.m. and at 4, without warning, he suddenly seemingly breathed his last. His wife and mother sent for a brother-in-law who was haying across the road and when he arrived Mr. H. was again conscious and took his seat on the front porch and said if that was death it was not as hard as he expected, and continued to converse with the family about ten minutes. He called for a drink and as his wife was approaching with the water he fell into her arms a corpse. The funeral services were conducted at the house on Friday by Rev. Mead, pastor of the M. E. Church at Hutchinson and the remains were then conveyed to the city, followed by a long train of wagons, and there taken charge of by the Masonic fraternity, which marched to the cemetery in front of the funeral procession, led by Waite’s band an deposited the remains in the grave with the honors of that order. The deceased was a son-in-law of Judge D. D. Olmstead, of this place. He leaves a wife, four children, an aged mother and a sister to morn his loss. Mr. Hastings came to Reno county ten years ago from Indiana and has been a reliable and highly respected citizen. The community as well as his family, has sustained a great loss.

The Nickerson Argosy
Nickerson, Reno County, Kansas
Wednesday, October 3, 1883
page – 3 *** column – 4
Samuel Dexter Hastings 1816-1903 Wisconsin

I have a terrific original oil painting of Samuel Dexter Hastings--very prominent in Wisconsin state legislature (you can find him on the internet). It was painted by Wm. F. Cogswell, a very well known portrait artist (painted Lincoln, U.S. Grant, many others). I would like to sell it to someone in that family (I would not ask too much for it). Is anyone out there related and/or interested?
It is a really nicely done portrait, well over 100 years old.
Thanks!

I am seeking information. His father is Robert, born 1806 in Ireland, his mother is Sarah, born 1818 in New York or Vermont. 1860 is the only census in which he appears although it is likely him in 1875 MN census in High Forest, Olmsted County. Any information would be most welcome.

Does anyone have any info on this lady and her family? She lived in Gloster, MS. She lived in the Amite, Wilkinson County area of MS. Her husband was Jehu N. Smith, and she has several children. They married in 1890. She is my great grandmother and I know virtually nothing about her family. Her son, William Jennings Smith "Frank" was my maternal grandfather. But he died in 1958, which was a year before I was born. He moved to Gregg County, Texas. His wife was Bonnie Mae Pepper Sharp.
Mae was in the 1910 census for Wilkinson County, and I have her on a cemetery record for Amite County. Mae died just a few months after my grandfather. She was buried in Roseland Cemetery. Her husband preceded her in death. All 3 of this family is buried in Roseland Cemetery. That is all I know about Mae Hastings Smith. So if you recognize this name, please email me, or reply to this board.

Will of Joseph Hastings contested 1907, Mobile, Alabama

From the Mobile, Alabama newspaper March 10, 1907

"The contest of the will of the late Joseph Hastings, a resident of this city for many years prior to his death, continued yesterday before Probate Judge Price Wil liams, Jr., in the circuit court. ... Mrs. Robert McBride, a disinherited daughter, is attempting to set aside the will on the ground of insanity. ... The will names as the heir Warren Hastings, a resident of Summerhill, Ireland. The amount involved in the suit is said to be about $15,000. Contestant examined sixty-eight witnesses yesterday, much of the evidence tending to show that the late Joseph Hastings was eccentric. ... On Tuesday the respondent will examine some ten witnesses. The entire day will probably be consumed in this evidence and the case will probably go to the jury by Wednesday."

Not my line, just sharing.

Peter Hastin

Searching for a Peter Hastin. Married to a Elizabeth ?. Had 1 daughter that I can find that married a David Stull in 1876 in Douglas Co.,IL. Josephine was born in 1854 North Carolina. I got this info about the father from Josephine's burial records from the furneral home that stated her father was Peter Hastin from NC no mother on record. 1920 census states that in the home of David Stull is wife Josephine, John Blythe, father in law IL TN IL and Elizabeth mother in law NC NC NC. The next census in 1900 I have a John W. Blythe IL VA VA, Elizabeth C. NC NC NC, Thomas son IL IL IL, I am thinking that Thomas is a step son to Elizabeth. Now below them is the David Stull family. I checked both census and the birth year on John and Elizabeth are the same 1837,(1900 & 1920) 1900 census says that John & Elizabeth have been married 17yrs. and that she has had 3 children with 2 living. I will search for a marriage between John & Elizabeth for now. If anyone has any info slightly relating to these people please answer on this board. Thank you.

HASTINGS, JOE R. - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

HASTINGS, JOE R.

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Army, Company C, 386th Infantry, 97th Infantry Division. Place and date: Drabenderhohe, Germany, 12 April 1945. Entered service at: Magnolia, Ohio. Birth: Malvern, Ohio. G.O. No.: 101, 8 November 1945. Citation: He fought gallantly during an attack against strong enemy forces defending Drabenderhohe, Germany, from the dug-in positions on commanding ground. As squad leader of a light machinegun section supporting the advance of the 1st and 3d Platoons, he braved direct rifle, machinegun, 20mm., and mortar fire, some of which repeatedly missed him only by inches, and rushed forward over 350 yards of open, rolling fields to reach a position from which he could fire on the enemy troops. From this vantage point he killed the crews of a 20mm. gun and a machinegun, drove several enemy riflemen from their positions, and so successfully shielded the 1st Platoon, that it had time to reorganize and remove its wounded to safety. Observing that the 3d Platoon to his right was being met by very heavy 40mm. and machinegun fire, he ran 150 yards with his gun to the leading elements of that unit, where he killed the crew of the 40mm. gun. As spearhead of the 3d Platoon's attack, he advanced, firing his gun held at hip height, disregarding the bullets that whipped past him, until the assault had carried 175 yards to the objective. In this charge he and the riflemen he led killed or wounded many of the fanatical enemy and put 2 machineguns out of action. Pfc. Hastings, by his intrepidity, outstanding leadership, and unrelenting determination to wipe out the formidable German opposition, cleared the path for his company's advance into Drabenderhohe. He was killed 4 days later while again supporting the 3d Platoon.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Magnolia, Ohio
Cemetery: Magnolia Cemetery

Born: 1925 Malvern, Ohio

Died: 1945 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_go/hasti...

Note: This is not my ancestry.

Hi
I am wondering if anyone knows how many children Walter Hastings, (born approx 1643, Humberstone) of the noble Hastings family of Leicester/ Ashby de la zouch there were.
I have so far confirmed through looking at others research they include a hannah, henry and jane.

However, i am trying to find a link if a great granparent of mine a john hastings who was born 1677 st martins, leicester could be a sibling of hannah who was baptised the same place in 1678. The only difference is that her parents are mentioned (Walter), but John who's christening is found in the igi but not parish records are not. As she is the only other person chrsitened at that time for a long period i am assume are highly likely to be related.

Any help i would be most greatful for

regards

john boy

I am indeed a Hastings and I have been told all my life that it is a tradition in our family for the first born son to have the initials DDH. The names I know of are David Dwight, Daniel Dwight, Donn Dwight, and Dwight Donald.

My question is: Does anyone else know about or carry along this tradition? All in curiosity! It doesn't much matter to me since I'm the 3rd child and female.
