Hi Travis,

Thanks Travis,

I'd love to see what you have. I'm really interested in that Pitts connection as I can find nothing on my paternal grandmother except her marriage in 1896.

My e-mail is agh3rd@aol.com

I'm pretty certain we aren't talking about the same William Hatchett. Mine was born circa 1813 and married Rachel Sisk in Cross County Arkansas in 1876. I'm pretty sure it was his second marriage and probably hers as well as she was born circa 1840.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Andy Hatchett
agh3rd@aol.com

Re: John Hatchett came from England

I'm not sure we'll ever know for sure. The link from John Hatchett to Thomas Hatchett is pretty tenuous. Making that connection relies on multiple leaps of faith. For example, most people take for fact that a Thomas Hatchet sailed on the Transport of London. But I think that passenger list relies on the 1873 trascription found in the "Persons of Quality" book. But while researching in the 1970's while I was living in Salt Lake City, I found a different source that rendered that individual as "Thos. Hacket". That's a pretty significant difference. However, there are other records of a Thomas Hatchett early in the James River area. When he came, what his birthdate really was (if we don't trust the Transport of London record), whether he settled there or moved to other parts of Virginia, and whether he bears any relation to John Hatchett we can only speculate. As for John, what we do have are three fairly independant and early family histories that all agree John was originally from England.
The reason he was brought to court to adjudge his age is because indentured servants served until they reached a specific age. In order to know when the servitude would end, the person's age when entering servitude had to determined. That there is no record of his passage is not in itself proof of much, since a large percentage of persons coming over in early days likely have no remaining records of passage. Children were even brought over against their will to satisfy the demand for labor. This gray market in humans was probably not recorded in detail at the time it was occurring.
The John and Elizabeth link may some day be firmed up. We know his wife's name was Elizabeth, early family history says Elizabeth Bass, and the naming of their daughter Hester Hatchett provides an indirect nudge toward Elizabeth being William and Hester's child. And the close proximity of this Bass family to the farms where John was indentured and where he worked after that is additional circumstantial evidence. But there is no hard evidence yet, and family history is contradictory on the name of her father.

Your information matches what I have "found" and "believed". I have never seen a record of the birth of John Hatchett or any record of his arriving in this country. All the old manuscripts say he was born in England, but I think that it because he is the first one they can trace successfully. I saw a record in early Virginia court records, which I did not keep. At the time I was looking for something else. It was where Thomas Hatchett witnessed a legal document for John Farley. All that does is prove that there was a Thomas Hatchett who knew John Farley. We do know that John Hatchett was a servant boy of John Farley. I suppose I should go back over to the Family History Center and order the reel of information from very early Virginia and see if I can find that record again. No one seems to know anything about it.
I "think" John Hatchett was born in this country.  His father was a little old at the time.  If his mother was dead (we have no record of course), and his father was ill, he could have "given" his son to John Farley to be sure he was taken care of at his death.  John Hatchett was taken to court to have his age "adjudged" - I think for tax purposes.  Some say that if he had a parent living, the parent would have determined his age.  Others say that isn't true???  I don't know that much about early Virginia law.  We need a history scholar's advice.  Now about William Bass, There is a will (Deeds, Wills Henrico County, Virginia, 1688-1697, page 603.  Will of William Bass, Dated 20 April 1695k proved 1 Oct 1695, by the oaths of Joseph Tanner & Fra: Cater.  Sick and weak.  To my daughter Elizabeth Bass, one black white faced cow called prittymaid & a yearling heifer belonging to the same cow and four pewter dishes and the last bed that I fitted up.  I make my loving wife Hester Bass my executrix.  No other children mentioned.  No land or property mentioned.  Signed:  William WB Bass.  Then  (same book, page 44) Orphans Court  1 Oct 1701.  "Elizabeth Bass one of the orphans of William Bass late of this Coty Dec'd being (as she in court confesseth) above 21 years of age, acknowledgeth and the Rect. of her protion due out of her dec'd fathers Estate and Doth Discharge her Guardn & his Secty" .   (This does help in establishing Elizabeth's age).  On the internet I have found information which I have no source for - that William Basse and Hester had four children:  Thomas Bass, born 1673 in Henrico County, Virginia; William Bass, born Abt. 1678 in Henrico County, VA, and died January 21, 1775;
Ann Bass, born before 1690 in Henrico County, VA; and Elizabeth Bass, born before 1680, in Henricvo County, Virginia, died after 1758. I believe Hester remarried after William's death - a Mr. Henry Farmer. I don't know if any of this helps, but I'm glad someone is "researching" our Hatchett heritage and not relying on the old manuscripts. Ann
I actually cant help you with proving that your Elizabeth Bass was the same one to Marry John Hatchett, but I can tell you that John Hatchett's father, Thomas Hatchett is actually the one to travel to Virgina, not John. In my belief, it is just a clerical error that says John was born in England. There are documents that say Thomas traveled to Virginia on the ship The TRANSPORT OF LONDON (with EDWARD WALKER as ship master). The Ship left London, England on July 4, 1635. Thomas Hatchett was only 19 at the time. If you google the ship, you will find the documents that state Thomas Hatchett was the one who traveled to Virgina way before John was even born. It does state that John was indentured to John Farley at the age of 10. However, in the event that Johns birth place is not a clerical error, there is only one way that could have happened: Thomas did go back to England and had John there, got sick and indentured his son to John Farley to go back to Virginia and work for him for land because he was terminally ill and/or Johns mother was dead, also ill, or was unable to care for him, or sent him to back to Virginia with John Farley because of the English Civil Wars. More than likely his birth place is just a clerical error, because I havent yet found any document that states Johns arival in Virgina or anypart of America.

How could John Hatchet(t) have been born in England if his father Thomas Hatchet(t)Landed in Virginia in 1635 on the TRANSPORT OF LONDON, that set sail from London on July 4, 1635? If you google the ship you can find a free passengers list with Thomas Hatchett in it, he was 19 when he came to Virginia. If John's birth year is correct, which is in the 1670s, then Obviously, John couldnt have been born in England. I am thinking his birth place was just a clerical error. The only way John could have been born in England is if Thomas went back to England before John was born. It is noted that John Hatchett was indentured to John Farley when he was 10 years old. There could be two reasons for his indentured service at the age of ten. Either (1) his fater Thomas Hatchett died or was terminally ill before he had worked off his indentured service to John Farley, leaving John orphaned(which could be probable because there is no death date or even year recored for Thomas),or with no one to take care of him but his mother, so he would have to be indentured to feed and house them both atleast untill she remarried, or (2)Thomas did go back to England and had John there, got sick and indentured his son to John Farley to go back to Virginia and work for him for land because he was terminally ill and/or Johns mother was dead, also ill, or was unable to care for him, or sent him to back to Virginia with John Farley because of the English Civil Wars. More than likely his birth place is just a clerical error.

I connect to the hatchetts from Coosa County and my great great grandfather is the George Washington Hatchett b 1827 in Coosa County and died there in 1896. I'm sure you connect. Do you know your grandfather's father, and can you give me your grandfather's birth year and I'll see if I can find them on the census records.

Peggy Stewart Gore

Hi Cedric,

I'm afraid that we'd need a bit more info before being able to help you... such as your mother's and father's name, date and place of birth, where they were married, your grandparents info wouldn't hurt either.

By the way, I also live in Nashville- we could well be related but there is no way to tell without more details.

Andy Hatchett
I have just read your jan 02 message about Bernice Fossett. she was my grandmother, and in fact, more like a mother to me. she pracically raised me. my father, Jerry Hatchett was her son. Both of my parents are passed now, and for so long ive wanted to find out more and more about my grandmother, however, my parents are gone, and we are military brats, so, dont have oontact with any relatives. Bernice (Maw) was and is the most important person in my life. I loved her dearly, and we were best friends. Please let me know if you are still out there
