Jennifer:
I know there are many descendants of George Hatfield who believe he and Abraham Hatfield, Jr. are the
same person. I believe there is solid evidence to show this is not true. Abraham Hatfield Jr. was born in or near Elizabethtown, NJ about 1695, married Margaret Winans there about 1716, and he died there in 1745. His will was probated there in 1745. George seems to have been a generation later. George is supposedly born about 1715 or 1716 in VA and died in VA about 1795. Abraham Hatfield, Jr's will did not have a George included among his heirs although he did have a son named Abraham (III).
Abraham Hatfield III also could not have been the George Hatfield of VA. Abraham III was born about 1718, but is known to have died 6 Nov 1759 and known to have married Eleanor Blackledge 17 Sep 1746. He was born and died in NJ.
Some Family Trees posted in the Rootsweb.com Family Trees show George Goff Hatfield as the father of Joseph, Jeremiah, George Jr and John and have some notes indicating some research that looks reliable. A tree posted by James Rasmake shows George's father to be Richard Hatfield of Isle of Wight Co., VA and Richard's father to be William Hatfield, said to be the immigrant ancestor. The given date of birth for Richard of about 1660 seems a little improbable, but not impossible and particularly not if it were a second marriage to a much younger wife which was not uncommon.
Rasmake's notes indicate that George, Jr. and Jeremiah Hatfield were on the 1771 list of Titables in Botetort Co. VA and were noted to be sons of George Hatfield, Sr. The author was of the opinion that George Sr. also lived nearby, but apparently not a land owner.
Another note reported that oral tradition holds that George Sr.'s wife was the daughter of the Mingo Indian Tribe Chief, John Logan. Her name may have been Margaret. A posting by Jerry Hatfield claims that George Hatfield, Sr.'s wife was named Marthy Thoms. Many poster erroneously claim that it was Margaret Winans.
A Family Tree posted by Jack Scanlon cites LDS records in reporting the children of Richard Hatfield to be George Goff Hatfield, William, David, Benjamin, Jesse, John and Richard. Someone must have found a will or a family bible to have acquired that knowledge.
After looking at many of the family trees claiming that Abraham George Hatfield and Margaret Winans were the parents of Joseph Hatfield, I noted that many cited LDS records as the source. My guess is that someone made that assumption and reported that to LDS probably for the purpose of a church sealing. Once it became recorded there, it looks like many blindly followed it as a source.
I hope the above will clear up what I believe to be a widespread error.
