Hello Elizabeth! Thank you for your reply, it was forwarded to me as my email address has changed. I have not heard from any Haugh relatives in awhile, but JoAnn Tortorolo (sp?) and Don McDaniel both responded back then and I got a lot of information from them. We were able to meet for the opening of the Haughville branch library and the meeting room featured a display of information on Adam's son, Benjamin Haugh, the namesake for Haughville. It was a great opening and the Haugh family members who came made it even more special. I will try to find her contact information, but I think JoAnn was from California too, do you know her? If not, we must try to get you two together. She has all the family history and you will have a lot to share. Let me know if you are already in touch with her. Thanks again, Eileen

Thanks, Stonepegger. I have already found those in the Fairhaven and Poultney, VT cemetaries (they include my great and great great grandparents!), but I cannot trace where they came into the USA or where in Ireland they came from. Family legend says that part of the family is from Co. Clare, but we just don't know which line. Thanks, again, tho!

Have a great day,
Heidi

The older ones are buried in St. Marys Cem. in Fair Haven, Vermont. They were likely from a 30 mile radius in adjacent Tipperary, Clare or Limerick as were most of the people of that Irish community.

That would be great. Our ancester Johan George Haak, migrated to the US in 1733 aboard the ship, Pennsylvania Merchant as Hans Jereck Hauk. He was born about 1700 and died 4 Aug 1786 in Pa., USA. Someone had his birth in Steinweiler Pfalz with his father as Johann Valentin Hauck. None of that is substatiated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is also a prayer book for a Florence Smith and a small german bible for a Lucy SHEA????? try to make out the last name the book fell and I just torn the cover off...that book is dated 1897.
Sorry, but this doesn't sound like my Haugh line. The short answer to your question then is 'no'. But I give long answers: My family name was originally Haak and Haag, immigrated 1730s from Germany to PA. It was not until 80 years later that the Haugh spelling began to appear in my family as they moved westward out of Berks and Dauphin Countys to Centre county and on to Armstrong County PA. The spelling, Haugh, itself is more likely an Anglo or non-German name. I believe my Haak and Haag slid into the Haugh spelling as they left the heavily german enclaves and mingled more with english speakersin central and western PA.

It is always possible that one of the Haak siblings wandered south to Maryland and went through a name metmorphis as did my Haak. If you have reason to believe that your 'Haughs' were German it could be worth the exploration.

I have My Johan Jacob arriving in Dauphin County from Berks at approx age of two (ca 1787) along with his parents and siblings as well as his uncle Johan George and his family. As to whether His aunt Maria Barbara and husband were there also I cannot say; I did not search Wagners.

Sometime in the 1820s Jacob and family as well as Jacob's brother Daniel and Family show up in Centre County. I believe that Jacob is the Jacob Hogg in 1830 census of Spring Twp. But, again, in re Barbara, I have not searched Wagner although the Haughs did seem to move in extended family.

By mid 1840s Jacob and brother along with families were moved on to Jefferson County.

I offer Satisfaction Guaranteed on the Haugh Book at $9.95 plus $2 SH.
My 3rd great-grandfather was Mathias Wagner of Centre Co., Pa. For years I've resisted accepting, as others have, that he was the son born in 1782 to Johan George Wagner and Maria Barbara Haag of Berks County (she being the sister of your George Michael). Although there is seemingly strong circumstantial evidence supporting this tie, some conflicting evidence left me in doubt. You say George Micahel's son Jacob wandered through Centre County. When was that? Were there other members who passed through or took up residence there?

Haughs from Ireland to Washington County, NY or VT

Hello Haughs!! :)

I'm looking for any information on my grandmother's family. My Gram, Margaret Haugh, hailed from Rutland, VT, but her father, John Haugh, was born in Hampton, Washington County, NY. I believe that John met my great grandmther, Alice Carmody (b. in Wells, Rutland County, VT) at the area church in Fairhaven, Rutland County, VT. He had several siblings, but we don't know where they went and the family has lost touch with their lines. John's father (and Margaret's Grandfather) was also named John (b. 1835, somewhere in Ireland, married to Catherine McMahon, b.1843, somewhere in Ireland) as was his father, John (b.1806, somewhere in Ireland, married to Bridget McGrath, v.1809, somewhere in Ireland).

My Haugh family appears to have immigrated some time before 1866 because John (b.1835)'s eldest child was born then and in Hampton, NY, USA. This is the first "American" listing of any of the Haughs. I don't know where they entered America or exactly when, and I've no idea where in Eire they may have been from.

According to US and NY census info, my Haughs were successful farmers in the Hampton, NY/Rutland, VT area.

If any of these folks sound familiar, please let me know! I'm happy to share what I've found so far.

Thank you!
Heidi

Yes the Haugh book is still available and yes it is your Haugh family. The Michael Haugh you speak of as son of Jacob was born 1808 in Dauphin County to Jacob and Elizabeth. Jacob born 1784 in Berks County where his great grand father settled in 1733, The year he arrived in Pennsylvania. The book covers the generations starting with the first immigrant of 1733 and follows line of descent all the way down to my own grandmother who was born in Jefferson county in 1886 as a great grand daugher of Jefferson County's first Jacob (father of your michael).

My book follows my line of descent from the immigrant pretty much but includes information on the siblings of each generation including your Michael married to Lana (Magdalena) Beisel. From Michael backward for four generations to the immigrant would be your line.

Most of the Jefferson County Haughs are descended from Jacob and my connection for Jacob with the Berks County Haak family and the immigrant of 1733 was a new discovery for Jefferson County Haughs when I published it in 2003.

One of the first readers of the book, Louise Heintzman, who had been researching the Jefferson County Haugh family for ten years said, "You have taken the (Jacob) Haugh family three generations further than any one else I know of".

The book is paperback, card stock, perfect bound, 5 ½ x 8 inches and contains 81 pages of history, including photos and Notes plus four fold-out charts to aid the researcher. (Plus my four page update of 2005) They may be purchased directly from me for $9.95 each, plus $2 First Class shipping per order.

I guarantee satisfaction of value or money refunded. Will also answer any specific question you have, regardless.

Dick Holben, 3659 Via Gaviota, Green Valley, AZ 85614

Phone 520-403-6614.

HAUGH DNA Project

I have just started a Hough/Haugh/Huff surname DNA project. This is a Y-DNA project which means that you have to be a male Hough/Haugh/Huff/ to be a member of the project.

The purpose of this DNA surname project is to help researchers break down brick walls, to determine if and how all of the Hough/Haugh, etc. lines are connected and for those of us in the U.S. to see how our lines are connected to the lines in Europe and other parts around the world.

DNA testing can be a very valuable tool in genealogical research. However, it won't tell us anything if we don't participate. So if you are a male Hough/Haugh/Huff/ or any other spelling variation of the name, or if you know of any living male Haugh from your line, please consider joining this project.

If you would like to join or for further information, please e-mail me at beckygrizz@yahoo.com and I will tell you how you can get started.

Regards,
Becky (Hough) Griswold

Carol,

Did your grandmother have any brothers who are still alive or who have living male descendents? A male Haugh would need to take this test as it is a Y-Chromosome test. If you can find a male Haugh in your line you can sponsor a test for them.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Regards,
Becky Hough Griswold

Any possibility any of your Haugh research has turned up a William David Haugh, b abt 1826, likely in Frederick Co, MD? He married (1850, Carroll Co, MD) Susanna Forney, b 1824 in York Co, Pa. He died 1922 in Frederick Co, MD.
His death cert lists his father as William D Haugh and his mother as Susan Fahrney, so I'm not sure that's correct. This is a brick wall and several people have been unable to find any birth/baptism record for him, so perhaps he wasn't born in MD.
Thanks for any help or ideas. Linda

Actually, I do think Wm Haugh was German. His wife and her family were German Lutherans, the area of Md where he lived was very heavily German, and he was a member of the Grace reformed church, which was an offspring of the German Reformed Church. My grandfather's sister is also researching this line and I asked her to take a look at these posts- Wm D Haugh was her grandfather and she may have more info than I do.
Do you know where in Germany you Haag's originate? I am researching another line in Konigheim, Baden, and have many Haag (Catholic) ancestors there. Probably no connection, since the early German emigres weren't Catholic, but interesting..
Thanks for your speedy reply
Linda

I am sorry I could not help you....it does sound like there are more Robert Lorne Haughs in the world....if I run across something in my research in the future, I will send it along your way....John, have you accessed the Ontario registration records to see if they lead you anywhere? Not knowing where you are at in your search, that is the only thing I can suggest at this time.
John: Here is a website for you.........http://www.archives.gov.on.ca. Once at the site, on the main page, access the Vital Statistics. This area will tell you how to process the Ontario registration records and other important data you will need to know. Print out as much as you can because there are many steps for each type of registration....the next step(depending upon where you live) is to access a Family History Center at an LDS/Mormon church. Films with the data are available through them. Keep in touch if you get lost in the process. Will be glad to guide you through it! Connie

I'm seeking information on the children of this couple. Wm. died in Elk County PA in 1906; Clara died in Chickasaw, Armstrong County PA in 1930. One of their daughters was Rose, who married my great-grandfather Earl J. Marshall. They had five children [Clifford, Lester, Twyde, Clair and Ethel], were divorced, and then Rose remarried. She died in a train accident in 1918.

Other children of this Haugh family were [not sure of the order] Mabel [married John Narmey or Narby, lived in Emporium PA]; Blanche [married Al Martin and lived in Buffalo NY]; May [married Twyde Holben, lived in Apollo PA]; Leona [married Harry Ringbloom]; Elva or Elvey LaRue; Lyman [married Emma] and lived in Ford City PA; Guy or Guyon; and three children who died during an epidemic: Ervin, William and Sarah.

If you are part of this family, please let me know!

marshallfamily19@aol.com
