Evidently the original spelling was Heerbach, but in deeds written in English, it is generally written Herbaugh and HARBAUGH. The founder of the American branch of the family, YOST HARBAUGH, was a SWISS, who came to American about 1736. In the record of the Land Office at Harrisburg, Pa., his name appears spelled JOOST HARBAUGH, and from this record it appears that he owned 100 acres of land in MAXATAWNY township, then PHILADELPHIA, now BERKS COUNTY, PA. His first wife was also a native of SWITZERLAND. Their children were:
1. George Ludwig,
2. Jacob,
3. John
4. Henry
5. Yost.
His second wife was MARY ELIZABETH ________?
Their children were:
1. Leonard
2. Mary Elizabeth
3. Ann Margaret
4. Ann Catherine.
Yost was a member of the GERMAN REFORMED CHURCH, and tradition says that he is buried in the graveyard at the KREUTZ CREEK CHURCH.
JACOB HARBAUGH, son of YOST HARBARUGH, and great-grandfather of LEWIS C. HARBAUGH, was born in SWITZERLAND, FEBRUARY 05, 1730, and was 6 years old when his parents brought him to America. (I have more on him concerning his land).
JACOB HARBAUGH was married in April 1761, to Anna Margaretta, daughter of George Smith, who was born April 03, 1740. Jacob and Ann's children are:
1. Anna Margaretta, born January 27, 1762, and she was married to Henry Snyder, who resided near Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pa., and is buried at Grindstone Hill Church, six miles from Chambersburg.
2. Jacob, born March 21, 1763, and was married and had 10 children, Joseph, Mary, Jonathan, Benjamin, Solomon, Elizabeth, David, Nancy, Catherine and Miltilda
3. John
4. Susannah, born November 6, 1765, married to Jacob Hoover, and their 5 children:
Daniel, Rachel, Sophia, Margaret, and Catherine.
5. Catherine, born March 06, 1767, died unmarried.
6. Barbara, born March 12, 1768, died October 06, 1809.
7. Juliann, born June 21, 1769, died November 11, 1818
8. Anna Maria, born March 17, 1771, married to John Shriver,
I have a lot more - there are, ELIAS, HIRAM,PETER LEWIS,SAMUEL,JOHN,CHRISTIAN AND
