I have information. I am not a descendant, but I have been researching the Haviland family to find where my own line descends from. I have come to some deductions on this family which I have not been able to verify, but they are based on strong circumstantial evidence. I believe your William was actually William IV, great grandson of Jacob & Mary. (Frost is not complete in the descendants of Jacob and Mary, and leaves out generations.)

Here are his censuses, if you don't have them yet:

1790 FEDERAL CENSUS
Watervliet, Albany, NY
Page
William HAVILAND
1 male 16yrs & up (William Jr.)
4 males under 16yrs (Joseph M., William III, Charles, Stephen)
3 females (William's wife + Sally, Mary or Diadama - 1 daughter either married or not born yet?)

1800 - 1820, I haven't located yet

1830 FEDERAL CENSUS
Catharine, Tioga, New York
Page 197
HAVILAND, William
2 males 0-5 (2 unknown sons)
1 male 20-30 (William III)
2 females 0-5 (Lucy + 1 unknown daughter)
1 female 30-40 (Lydia)

1840 FEDERAL CENSUS
Catharine, Chemung, New York
Page 201
HAVILAND, William
1 male 0-5 (George? - was he actually born 1840?)
1 male 30-40 (William)
1 female 5-10 (Alvara - should have been 0-5)
2 females 10-15 (Lucy & Caroline)
1 female 30-40 (Lydia)
1 female 60-70 (William or Lydia's mother?)

1850 FEDERAL CENSUS
Catharine, Chemung, New York
Page 71, Dwelling #1110, Family #1122
HAVILAND, William, 44yrs, Male, Farmer, born NY.
HAVILAND, Lydia, 44yrs, Female, born NJ.
HAVILAND, Caroline, 15yrs, Female, born NY.
HAVILAND, Alvara, 11yrs, Female, born NY.
HAVILAND, George, 9yrs, Male, born NY.
DAVIDSON, Betsey, 26yrs, Female, born NY.
DAVIDSON, Peggy A., 18yrs, Female, born NY.
ROBINSON, Daniel, 26yrs, Male, Day Laborer, born Scotland.
ROP, Collins, 26yrs, Male, Day Laborer, born Scotland.
BROWN, John, 22yrs, Male, Day Laborer, born Ireland.
CUPACKE, Thos., 25yrs, Male, born Ireland.
DAVISON, Warren, 66yrs, Male, Mason, born NJ.
BROWN, Bartholomew, 36yrs, Male, Day Laborer, born Ireland.
GIDDINGS, Daniel, 62yrs, Male, born CT.

I would like to exchange more information.
The Will of Henry Budd mentions wife Glorianna and all 10 children. Daughter Mary is married to a Haight

Where did you find the sources for the birth and death dates of Henry Budd? [ I found mention of another Henry Budd in the late 1600's. ] I suspect Henry and Glorianna were married somewhat before 1802 since they had 10 children by the time he wrote his will in 1809. Joseph is mentioned as over 21 and son Henry is an executor and probably near 21. Gilbert and Jonathan are mentioned as being in their minority - under 21. Daughter Mary is married so probably over 16.
======================================

Will of Henry Budd - 1809, White Plains, New York
Proved Dec. 21, 1813
Transcribed Nov. 2008 by Anne Winters

I, Henry Budd of the Town of White Plains in the County of Westchester do this twenty ninth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and nine make this as and for my last Will and Testament in manner and form following:

First, I give and bequeath to my loving wife Gloryana at her disposal forever two of my best beds, bedding, and furniture compleat one cherry table, one looking glass, one Clothe Cubbard, six of my first quality and six of my second quality setting tchairs, one half of all my linen, one pair brass head Andirons and shovel and Tongs, her hunting saddle and so much of my Kitchen furniture as will furnish her with materials to use in keeping house in a comfortable way.

Secondly, I will and order my Executors hereinafter named, or such of them as shall qualify and undertake the execution of this m Will to sell all the remainder of my personal Estate and also to sell all my real Estate at some convenient time as to them shall appear most beneficial to my Estate and the Legatees after named and out of the money so raised to pay all my just debts and funeral charges and the charges of settling my Estate and the remainder of the money in my Executors hands I do give and bequeath in the following manner.

First I give and bequeath to my said loving wife Gloryanna at her disposal forever all the one seventh part of the money in my Executors hands after they have paid as above directed.

Second, I give and bequeath to my son Joseph and to his Heirs and Assigns forever the Sum of One Hundred and twenty five dollars upon condition that he will not call on my Executors for payment of any sums of money for his labour for me since he arrived to the age of twenty one years.

Thirdly, and all the remainder of such money I give and bequeath in the following manner, that is to pay for my sons Joseph, Henry, Benjamin, Gilbert, and Jonathan and to my daughters Mary Haight, Elizabeth, Deborah, Tamar, and Sarah severally and to their several respective Heirs and Assigns forever to be divided in the following manner, that is to say to my Sons Joseph, Henry, Gilbert, and Jonathan and to each of them the sum of Ten Dollars, and to Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah, Tamar, and Sarah and my son Benjamin and to each of them the sum fo Five Dollars and in that proportion.

I will and order my executors to pay of such money to my said children until the whole of such money shall be paid out excepting as to my daughter Mary Haight out of her proportion I order to be deducted the sum of Two hundred and twenty five Dollars being so much money I have advanced for Articles and before given to her which sum I order to be divided as the other money is ordered to be divided.

Fourthly, I Will and order my Executors to put all the proportions of money given to my Sons under the age of Twenty one years at Interest, and all the proportions of money given to my daughters under the age of eighteen also at Interest and to pay the Interest that arises thereon severally for the support, maintenance, clothing and education of such children from time to time at their discretion and pay to my Sons their several proportions both principal and Interest in their hand as they severally shall be twenty one years old and in like manner pay to my several daughters as they severally shall be eighteen years old or at their several marriage day or days if that shall take place before they or either of them shall be eighteen years old.

Fifthly, I do hereby constitute and appoint all my Executors that shall qualify and underake the Execution of this my Will trustees for my two sons Gilbert and Jonathan during their minority and I do authorize and empower the said Trustees as Trustees and Guardians for my said two sons to take their persons and property into their possession and by Indenture or Indentures to bind them Apprentices to some person or persons to learn some mechanical art or arts if they shall think it advisable and for the benefit of my said Sons or if it should be found to be more for the benefit of my said Sons or either of them that the said Trustees and Guardians shall contract with some person or persons to teach my sons or either of them some Mechanical Art of Arts and in such contract such Trustees and Guardians ought to give a sum of money for that purpose.
Where did you find the info the Henry Budd and Glorianna Purdy married in 1802? From the will it sounds as though they had been married some time:===========================
============================================================
" First, I give and bequeath to my loving wife Gloryana at her disposal forever two of my best beds, bedding, and furniture compleat one cherry table, one looking glass, one Clothe Cubbard, six of my first quality and six of my second quality setting tchairs, one half of all my linen, one pair brass head Andirons and shovel and Tongs, her hunting saddle and so much of my Kitchen furniture as will furnish her with materials to use in keeping house in a comfortable way....First I give and bequeath to my said loving wife Gloryanna at her disposal forever all the one seventh part of the money in my Executors hands after they have paid as above directed...Lastly, I nominate and appoint my said loving wife Gloryana, my son Henry Budd, and my trusty friend Israel Mott, and Elijah Purdy.
The bulk of the Irish Havilands came later but it's not too early for her to be one of the Irish Havilands; nor is it the wrong place for her to be one of the English/Guernsey Havilands either. It's not as though all the Irish came only to Boston at a certain time, and none of the English came to Boston earlier.

My thinking is more about settlements. Cousins settle in the area where other cousins settled, and surely Mary didn't emigrate to the Boston area without a male member of her family, such as a father. Although we have almost no evidence to know one way or the other, the Irish Havilands (that is, Havilands who trace back to Ireland, not necessarily emigrating directly from there) may have begun to establish themselves in the Boston area in the 1600s; for if it were the English Havilands one would think William would have settled in that direction, or his descendants would have traveled back and forth from there to visit cousins leaving traces of themselves. But so far nearly every Haviland who remained in the Boston area that I have ever studied is either an unknown connection or can be traced back far enough to reveal Havlin as an original spelling of the name. Haverland could be another alternate spelling of Havlin. (Incidentally, my theory is that Haviland brand chocolate -- most famously known by their mints -- is named after the Irish Haviland family. The Haviland trademark was filed originally by Miller & Hollis in 1943 in Boston and would pass hands in a series of mergers and securities exchanges over the years ending up with NECCO. The trademark in 1943 was a coat of arms, which may have been entirely invented for the chocolate but if it's based at all on a local Haviland family's coat of arms it looks nothing like the Guernsey/English arms.)

That Mary moved to Flushing I don't think had to do with her own family, but rather that of Bowne's, as they were settling on Long Island. (http://www.bownehouse.org/ ) The Flushing area was a boon for settlers in that time period, probably influenced by, or for the same reasons as, the flourishing Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam over on neighboring Manhattan Island.
Chris, didn't the Irish Havilands come over in the 1800's, rather than the 1600's? Isn't this too early of a date for Mary Haviland of Massachusetts to be one of the Irish Havilands?

Spelling was quite fluid in 18th century in this country, too. I have a photocopy of a 1700's NJ supreme court document that, speaking of the very same man, calls him "Stephen Haviland", "Also known as Stephen Heaviland", and "Stephen Heavilin". Don't get too hung up on name spellings.

If Henry Budd and Gloriana Purdy married in 1802, then she must have been Henry's second wife, and not the mother of Joseph and Deborah, since Joseph was b. abt. 1780 and Deborah was b. abt 1795, per 1850 census:

1850 FEDERAL CENSUS
White Plains, Westchester, NY
Page 133, Dwelling #72, Family #72
HAVILAND, Abraham, 60yrs, Male, Farmer, born America.
HAVILAND, Deborah, 55yrs, Female, born America.
HAVILAND, Joseph, 22yrs, Male, Shoemaker, born America.
BUDD, Joseph, 70yrs, Male, born America.
Thank you. I have found those census records and others and have found a marriage license, but no parents names. I keep trying. If I can get a copy of the death certificate that might help. Somewhere there is a missing record that will bring it all together. Hopefully I'll find it in my lifetime. Ha! I'll just keep digging. Don

I have been stuck on my great-great grandfather for quite a while now. His name was Philetus Haverland (he changed his name to Heavirland before he passed) and he was born in NY in 1827. I don't know who his parents were or where they were born. My uncle Phil Heavirland and I have done the DNA test and he says he has had contact with a Haviland and the match is very good. I am wondering if you have any further information about William Haverland? Do you know when he was born and where and if he migrated to the US prior to 1827? I would be very interested in any possible connection.

My grgrandmother was of Haviland descent through her father Peter Hoag. She died in Il in 1896, and there were no death refcords in Il at that time. You might try finding an obit in a newspaper obit. I found her mother's obit in a newspaper. It was just a squib saying she died at home of her son-in-law Peter Hoag. Peter died abt 1903 in Il, but his death record did not give parents mames.

John Haviland and Sarah Lathem - Gloucestershire connections

I've traced back family to John Haviland who married Sarah Lathem 30 Oct 1814, Michinhampton, Gloucestershire. I've been told this family goes back to Rector John Haviland in the 1500s but am having trouble making the connections.

If there's anyone working on, or who has information or places I might look online for this family I'd greatly appreciate it. Not having yet determined John's parents I'm stuck on a number of possible John Havilands in the Gloucestershire area.

thanks in anticipation,
Brian.

Many thanks for the information; lots of new things for me to look into there. In tracing the line back to Rev John Haviland is there anywhere I'd be able to access this information online, or would it be a case of picking up various pieces from a number of sources?

The Australian connection is also most interesting: Annie and her husband Walter Sarre came to Australia as Assisted immigrants per Scottish Bard, departing London 17 May 1877, arriving Townsville, Queensland 21 August 1877. Moving later to New South Wales by 1883, and then to Victoria by 1884.

Thanks again,
Brian

Well, John Haviland's mother-in-law, Dorcas C. Nichols Webster(first wife of Seymour Clinton Webster), married my great-great-great-grandfather(Dyer Daniel Burton) when she was 82 years old.

I looked at the Quaker Meetings Recordshttp://www.swarthmore.edu/Library/friends/hazard/index.html

and I looked over the Ancestry family trees and sort of decided that John Haviland(1837-NY) might be the son of Nathan Haviland(1814-NY) and Susannah Hartin(1814-NY) . This would make Mary C. Webster and John H. Haviland 2nd cousins.

I don't have any hard evidence at this point. Just a working theory.
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=9464276&p...

I have Seymour's obit, thanks.

I can prove that Dorcas C. Nichols Webster was not dead when Seymour C. Webster married Susan Peters, if you know anyone that would be interested in that.

Thanks for the help,
Verloren

I can give you this much- Seymour Clinton Webster d 1892. He was son of David Webster by his second wife Nancy Randall. That line goes Mary8, Seymour7, David6, John5, Jonathan4, George3, Thomas2, Gov. John1 Webster. I have an obit for Seymour in my files if you want it.

John5 married Dorothy Hills in 1745. There is a Webster Family genealogy. The Hills and Websters intermarried repeatedly going back to Plymouth Colony and pilgrim days.

John also shows in the genealogy of the Elder John Strong Famly.

I looked in my files for your John Haviland and came up empty. My line of Havilands traces back to Garrison Haviland #183 in Frost's the Haviland Genealogy. His father was John Haviland, son of Adam, grandson of Benjamin and ggrandson of Old Man William Haviland. The Havilands were well to do Quakers and you see lots of traveling and locations of several hundred miles in a lifetime was fairly common. Might be a connection to a Haviland in Vermont?

You and I are cousins of some kind. Would be intersted if you find your Haviland connection.

You probably know that the early Quakers would not allow a marriage with nonQuakers. That resulted in many cousins marrying. In the Hoosick area, you have the Hoags, Nickols, Havilands, Websters and Slocums as the leading Quaker families. All are related. The Nichols and Hoags go back to Amesbury, Mass. The Havilands and Slocums to Rhode Island. The Websters to Conn and Massachuetts. Benjamin Nichols shows as having bought part of the Van Rensselaer lands for Quaker interests in 1740.

The West Troy meeting records are pretty darn boring to wade through and not particularly helpful. You also have to look at the Easton and Saratoga meeting records along with the Purchase Meeting and from there to New York city. It's a very long slog.

Do you have any information on the Hartin/Harten line. The Rensselaer County cemetery records has the last name as Harten rather than Hartin. Frost also has the line Harten and says Catherine/Katherine was the daughter of a Joseph Harten b 1766. I've never been able to get beyond Joseph or for that matter Sarah Garrison the mother of Garrison Haviland.

Is your Nathan theory based on Nathan son of Roger Hartin Haviland another son of Garrison and Catherin (Harten) Haviland. Frost shows Nathan as #848 in the Haviland Genealogy. This Nathan did have a brother John. There was also a cousin Charles by way of his Uncle William #390 in Frost. Charles shows with son John and Humphrey. Lots of candidates in a large group of people with common surnames.

Had to laugh. I've spent many a fruitless hour with the Quaker meeting records.

Anyway, good luck with the Havilands. My many times grandmother was Asenath Haviland, a daughter of Garrison and Katherine (Catherine Harten/Hartin) Haviland. Asenath is #396 in Frost's work.

Asenath is buried at Quaker Hill cemetery in Renssealer County.

If William was the son of James Haviland of Salisbury (which is likely, but not proven) then there is no recorded Edward in that family. However, there is a record of an Edward Haviland who may be the same one. He matriculated at the age of 15 in 1601 at Balliol College Oxford and was recorded as a gentleman's son from Gloucestershire. No definite links to any branch of the family, but possibly belongs to the Bristol Havilands, who were quite well to do at this date.

Re: Annie Haviland

Annie's father Henry was the son of John Haviland and Sarah Lathem, bp Minchinhampton Gloucestershire 22 Apr 1821. From there the Haviland family is traceable in Gloucestershire right back to Rev John Haviland in the 16th century. As well as Ann(i)e and Thomas Richard, Henry and Louisa had a son John Henry (who married Emma MIDDLEBROOK and had 4 children in London) and three children who died young( Mary Jane, Emily Louisa and William Charles). Louisa nee Cowley died in 1866 and Henry remarried in 1867 to Hannah HAZELL. I'm interested that Annie went out to Australia, as her brother Thomas Richard did also. He arrived in Sydney as an assisted emigrant on the Dharwar in 1883 aged 32, travelling with 31 yr old Sarah Haviland and 10 yr old Edith Haviland. They were all living in Fremantle WA in 1901 and Thomas and Sarah are both buried at Karrakatta Cemetery WA.

You won't find the information that you want online, as it is mainly in parish registers in Gloucestershire Record Office. Some of the birth and marriage entries have been indexed on the IGI (Familysearch website), but there are gaps. If you want to contact me via the Haviland One Name Study at the Guild of One Name Studies (type GOONS into Google) I'd be happy to help you. Penny

I have come across Philetus Haverland in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses for US. In both he gives his state of birth as New York, and in the 1880 census he states that both his parents were born in New York state. For both these censuses he was in Denison, Crawford county, Iowa. In 1855 he was listed at Hampshire, Kane county Illinois. The ages given make him born c 1826-28. Would a death or marriage registration for him give his parent's names?

You are correct. John Hartin Haviland, b. 24 Sept. 1837 in Rensselaer, New York, d. 30 June 196 in Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin, was the son of Nathan Haviland (b. 25 Jul 1814 Pittstown, Rensselaer, NY, d. 18 Oct. 1864 Vicksburg, Warren, Mississippi) and Susannah Hartin. Nathan was the s/o Roger 'Harten' Haviland (06 Jun 1794, d. Dec. 1878) and Patience Nichols. Roger 'Harten' Haviland was s/o Garrison Haviland Sr. (b. 10 Mar 1767, d. 09 Oct. 1820 West Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY) and Katherine Harten.

Hope this helps
Marilyn (Heavilin) Current

Hi, my name is Linda. I am a decendent of Roger and Catherine Haviland. My great, great grandmother was Ella Haviland, an adopted daughter who married Frank Bowman Sheldon. If you are not already aware of them, there is an extensive diary that Catherine maintained that is posted on the internet. I am interested in filling out the Schad/Austin side of my family tree information and also the Cummin side (Ella's twin sister Alice). We have some tin-type style photographs of folks to which we are trying to put names. Perhaps you might have some helpful information or corroborating items.
