You have a Zachariah Hawkins in born in NC which I would like to know more about him and his brothers and his father and his fathers brothers. Did any of them emigrate to TN or have a son named Henry? Samuel, James, William, John, Benjamin, Franklin, Monroe were some of the sons named in Henry Zachariah Hawkins descendants. I am at a brickwall for him and would appreciate any help. I am looking for a male cousin for DNA testing.
Cheyenne (Hawkins)

I thought I would give you a holler again since I never had a response from you. I believe your Parnum B. Hawkins and my Henry Z. Hawkins are related, either brothers or cousins. In 1859 in Izard Co, AR land records they are owning connecting parcels. Archibald B. Hawkins is owning land in a rather close proximity also. Hope to hear back.

Cheyenne (Hawkins)

Did any of these Elizabeth Hawkins have a husband named William Simpson? He was from Baltimore CO, MD. I think she was born in Rowan CO, NC, but her parents could have been from MD. They had a son named John Simpson, who married Arilla Osborn. They moved from NC to SC. Their children, including Benjamin Franklin Simpson, eventually moved to GA. My great-grandfather Rufus Marion Simpson moved from Coweta CO, GA, to Calhoun CO, AL.

Thanks for any information you may have.

Dottie Simpson Bennett dsbennett@yahoo.com

I am looking for Elizabeth Hawkins from about the same time period, but from Rowan CO, NC. I am sorry that I am not familiar enough with the old counties to know if these two are in close proximity to each other. Elizabeth married William Simpson from Baltimore Co, MD. She was his second wife. The first was Avarilla Perkins.

Do any of these names sound familiar?

Hi Dottie.

I highly doubt my book would include someone born in NC. In the early chapters it mostly recaps records found for very early Hawkins inhabitants of MD and their descendents, land named in records, wills, marriages etc. It then goes on to explore in great depth one particular line descended from Henry Hawkins (1st wife Ellinor)(2nd wife Elizabeth Holland widow of Frances Wynne/Wine).

There are a great many Elizabeth Hawkins listings. To see if there is any connection to yours, I checked for Simpson but found nothing in my index. Also did not find Osborn, Perkins or Sherrill.

I did find a listing for a Preble and a Gilbert.
Elizabeth Hawkins married Charles Gilbert Sept. 27, 1744 in Baltimore County, MD. Her father was Robert Hawkins who died in 1761 in Baltimore County, MD. His wife at death was Sarah but she could have been a second or third wife.
Robert Hawkins married Anne Preble Nov. 15, 1701 in Baltimore County, MD. This Robert may be the father of Elizabeth Hawkins Gilbert or her grandfather.

Kathi

Hi, Kathi!

Do you find anything in the book in connection to an Elizabeth Hawkins who was the second wife of William Simpson? He was from Baltimore CO, MD. She, I think, was from NC. His father was William Simpson, mother Elizabeth Prebble. His grandfather was Richard Simpson, grandmother Ann Gilbert. The Simpsons, Gilberts, Osborns, Perkins, Hawkins, and Sherrills seem to be interconnected in MD and NC in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

Dottie Simpson Bennett dsbennett2008@yahoo.com

Hi! This is the first time ever that anyone has had information on Nathaniel that I didn't already have, alhought I'm not 100% sure if it's accurate. I'd really like to communicate with you, glf, or with whomever it is with the family trees that you've mentioned.
My research has always shown Nathaniel as dying in 1879, and I have family lore regarding the impact of his death on my gg-grandmother and their children. I also have probate and estate records that confirm this. I'm happy to share what I have, but I'm very curious about this information that you've given. Please, please email me at yarsan@aol.com about this. Thanks!

Admiral Sir John Hawkyns

Many Hawkins families have wondered about a family connection to the famous British Naval pioneer, Admiral Sir John Hawkyns (1532-1595). However, because Hawkins is such a common surname, we obviously know that very few actually descend from the one and only son of the Admiral, Richard Hawkyns (1561-1622).

With this being such a narrow topic of Hawkins research, I have established a new discussion group to specifically target the genealogy of the Admiral. Anyone with an interest in the history or family of this historic figure is more than welcome to join.

Here's a link to join:

sirjohnhawkins-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Of course, this discussion group is free to join, and all communication is as simple as receiving and sending e-mails. If you have any questions, I may be reached privately at:

scbevers@comcast.net

Thanks. Note: Faulkner County was established in 1879.

According to family lore his family left Mississippi and settled around Pocohontas and then moved on to Muddy Bayou (Mt Vernon area).

I haven't found them in the 1860 census.

Pat

I am not sure either. I do know that Brehon moved his family from Mississippi to Arkansas between 1860 and 1870. I would not know if there were communications between them. Brehon must have had a relationship with his brother Madison as he named his son Madison. Brehon also had a son named Brehon and one named John. They along with sisters Rebecca, Eveline, and Catherine, just seem to disappear. I don't have any documentation that they are for sure his children but they appear with in his household in the 1870 census.

I am curious to know if Charlotte's mother was named Rebecca or Eveline or possibly Catherine. No one seems to know much about her family.

Pat

Thank you.

I have had basically the same information as you have provided but I am still a little skeptical about the Mary Christmas. Brehon had a grandson who lived to be 107 years old and his father Madison "Crow" 100 years old. They did not remember Brehon's mother as a Mary.

Brehon named his oldest daughter Sarah "Sallie" after his sister and he did have a daughter Mary who lived to be 99. Most the is line of Hawkins that did not survive to adulthood died from their appendex. Uncle Abe told me that all of the children had them removed.
Hello David,
I am interested in your KY Hawkins and Ro(d)gers people. I have a Henry Zachariah Hawkins b. abt 1824 TN, emigrated to KY married a Nancey Clarentine Jones in Calloway/Marshall, KY. He then went on to AR. His father was from NC and mother TN. I am looking for his siblings and parents. The interesting thing about your post is I also have Hawkins direct line that married a Ro(d)gers. They left out the "d" on and off. I have much Rogers info back to Joseph Rogers b. 1750, Amelia CO, VA. I also have Mary D.L. Williams b. abt 1834, Alabama that married Berry King in my line. I wondered if you would check your Sarah Isabel Willliams, mother of your Lena Rodgers, to see if these two, Mary and Sarah Williams might be related. I'm finding that families who were connected by marriages or friendships tended to emigrate along the same paths and intermarry down through the generations. Forgot to say my Rogers has Cherokee blood.

Hope something connects,
Cheyenne

Hello Mamacheyenne,
I forgot to add that unfortunately I know nothing about Sarah Isabel Williams other than she was supposedly very beautiful, marrying my great grandfather, Dr. John Fleming Rodges (born in Bourbon Co., Ky) when she was like 17 and he 49. I am not sure what happened to his marriage to his first wife Margeret E. Pattie. They had lived in Frankfurt, Ky and had been married for a good many years and suddenly he was with this Sarah Isabel Williams and living in Clifton, near Versailles, Woodford Co., Ky. Sarah's nickname was Sally Belle. Mama and them referred to her as Ma Belle. After my gr grandfather's death she remarried a Mr. Glass.

My grandfather, who grew up in Clifton and Versailles, had a bunch of cousins in and around Midway and Versailles I got the names off of old postcards (dated around WWI, before and after) and some info on them from a distant cousin I met on line. Here are those cousins:
---------------------------
On the other side of the paper was written the following names of which some if not all turned out to be cousins, aunts, or uncles of Lester Samuel Rodgers, as was seen on old postcards to and from them in ther early 1900s.

John S. Roberts, Sr., a Rodgers cousin descended from one of Dr. Rodgers' sisters, knowing who the people on the list are or were, helped solve the mystery and provided info on most of them. On some of the old post cards to Lester Samuel Rodgers it said at the end; "Your Cousin, Kizzie", or "Your cousin, K. R.", and another from Joe Rodgers, and Albert and Sam Roberts, etc.. Here they are, many of which are Lester Samuel Rodgers' aunt Elizabeth Frances Rodgers Roberts children, his 1st cousins. Eliz. F. Rodgers was Dr. Rodgers' younges sibling/sister:
1. Mary--Mrs. Early Morris, 1st cousin of Lester S. Rodgers (Mary Laythem Roberts) Died 1950.
2. Kizzie--Mrs. Wm. Renam, 1st cousin to L.S. R. Living in Midway, Ky. around 1911 (Kizzy Roberts Rena) Died 1964..
3. Lizzie--Elizabeth Jane Roberts, 1st cousin to LSR (Mrs. Richard Dixon), Died 1958..
4. Rosa--Rosa Etta Roberts; 1st cousin to LSR (Mrs. Hubert Woodard), Died 1974..
5. Tille--Mrs. O.T. Moore; 1st cousin to L.S.R. (Tillie Roberts Moore, Mrs. Owen T. Moore).
6. Carrie--Mrs. Carrie R. Lucas.
7. Josephine Rodgers, 1st cousin of LSR (daughter of Uncle Silas Newton Rodgers), Died 1937.
8. Sam (S.H.Roberts) 150 1/2/ Market St., Midway, Ky. (was there around 1909, 1910, etc.. I'm not sure if he was the husband of Josephine or not), 1st cousin of L.S.R. (Sam H. Roberts also had office at 144 Market St., Lex., Ky.), Died 1964..
9. Albert Roberts, 1st cousin of L.S.R.. Midway, Ky. (John Albert Roberts; father of John S. Roberts, Sr.). died 1976
.
10. John Rodgers, Midway, 1st cousin of L.S.R. (son of Uncle Silas N. Rodgers), Died 1963.
11. Joe Rodgers, 1st cousin of L.S.R. (son of Silas N. R.), Died 1933.
12. Hardin Rodgers, 1st cousin.of LSR, Died 1954. (son of Silas N. R.).
13. Claude Williamson, 404 Ohio St., Laforte, Indiana.
14. Molly Martin, Midway, Ky..

A lot of his cousins or aunts and uncles that he was writing back and forth to lived in and around Midway, Ky., etc..

Hello all and MamaCheyenne,
I too go back to a Joseph Rodgrs. And my line too they spell it sometimes with or without the "d", all through the ages. Below is an excerpt from my Rodgers Family File showing the Josephs in my line. But you interested me with the Cherokee blood thing. I never knew my Rodgers granddad. But my mom, uncle, and his two boys, were all sort of swarthy, tannish, or olive complexion, as is two of my siblings, with black wavy almost wiry hair but very soft and very dark brown or almost black eyes. I have often asked Uncle John or mama if we had Native American blood in us or even black. They didn't know. Where did the Cherokee blood tie in at? I mean, who married a Cherokee lass and when? I have my Rodgers/Rogers back to like 1300AD. Let me know and I will send you my file. Give me a hollar at k98@elmore.rr.com . Anyway, here is my excerpt from my file (the names iwth asterisks are my ancestors):
--------------------------------
(Numbers start afresh with 1st American born Rodgers):
I.
PETER RODGERS, B. ?? in Virginia--D. between Jan and July 9, 1724 in Virginia (odd saying "....between Jan and Jul 9th".??).
-M-
?? ??
ISSUE:
1. See following excerpt from Battle of Blue Licks: "The Battle of Blue Licks happened on August 19, 1782; ten months after Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown. This bloody frontier encounter is usually noted as the last combat of any size of the Revolutionary War. It took place near a salt spring along the Licking River in Central Kentucky north of Boonesborough and Bryan's Station. It was the most successful part of the invasion of an almost 1000 strong combined army of Ohio Indian Nations warriors, British Regulars and Queen's Rangers into Kentucky and West Virginia."
6.
His 1918 World War Draft Registration gives his name as Albert Brown Hawkins, born May 1, 1899. His next of kin is listed as Ruthie Hawkins. The card is hard to read but it looks like it says their residence is Jackson, Hinds, Mississippi.

In the census for 1930 in there is an Albert B. (age 28)& Ruthie Hawkins (age 26) living with her parents (McBride; Nelson and Annie)in Beat 2, Lincoln, Miss. Their Children were listed as; Fred 10 yrs old, Nelson 10 yrs old, Doris 8 yrs old and Claud 4 years old.

In the 1920 census of Utica, Hinds, MISS he and Ruthie are shown with a "sister" named Ida. It should mean that is his sister or it would say sister-in-law since he is the head of house. It shows that all of them were born in MISS.

Nancy Hawkins Shockey

My Hawkins was born in Lowndes Co. area of Mississippi. He married a Hickman about 1816 and had 10 children. He died when he was about 35. I haven't studied the family very much-- there are sooo many Hawkins. They were in the Lowndes Mississippi area and Fayette Co. Alabama area. My line was a Mary Hawkins who married a James H Smith and disappeared for years in the Indian Territory. She died at Boggy Depot Ok. She was my gggrandmother. I do not believe that I have ever met anyone of our Hawkins branch. Sure would like to make some connections though. Her father was Robert Hawkins, her mother was Elizabeth Hickman.

Yes, it's a very confusing family to research! My guess about the grandchildren not remembering Mary is just that since she died prior to any of them being born, they probably would be more likely to have known or heard of Jacobina (Jacky) since she became stepmother to all of Phil's children.
Have you by any chance run across anything that mentions Nathaniel?

Hi,
I'm guessing by now (nine years later) that you have the information that you were looking for, but I have the "official" family tree from the 2006 Hawkins Family Reunion. Philemon was married to Mary Christmas in 1793. She was the mother of Adam, Joseph (Dr.), Thomas, Brehon ("Bree"), and Sarah ("Sally"). Phil married Jacobina Sherrod in 1826. They had Arch, Madison, Nathaniel (my great-great grandfather), Lucy, Fanny , Mary, and Benjamin. Please contact me at yarsan@aol.com if you have gathered any additional information about this family. I do have more that I can share also.

Brehon's brother, Dr. Joseph W. Hawkins, also migrated to MS, so perhaps they were in the same area before Brehon left for Arkansas. This family was very, very migratory during the 1800's, which makes the work even more challenging. I was working on Joseph's family for a while, because he had a son with the same name (Nathaniel) as my gg grandfather, and I was trying to be sure I had the right one, so I have some census info and such on them in MS. Please email me if you want to know more about that.

Renate

Pat, I was just reviewing some notes, and ran across this. I don't think it will tell you anything new, but it does contradict the date-range that you gave for Brehon's move to Arkansas.

"All of Philemon and Mary's children reached adulthood at a time when the economy was adversely affected by the panic of 1819, an era of drought conditions and another depression in 1824. For this and probably other reasons all five children moved to TN during the period 1828 and 1833. This was the start of the Hawkins westward movement..... The 1850 Census showed all 4 brothers living in Panola Co., MS with their children. Brehon moved to Faulkner Co., AR in about 1851 and never left."

I think that knowing that all of Philemon and Mary's children moved west further justifies the notion that their children and grandchildren would not have known Jacobina, and therefore they didn't have a paternal grandmother at all. (Jacobina remained in Franklin County, NC and lived the remainder of her life as a widow.)

I guess another thought could be that (depending on Bree's relationship with Jacobina) perhaps the children didn't have a relationship with her as their "grandmother", so maybe their memories were only of their maternal grandmother? Do you know what her name might have been?

Hawkins in Saint Louis - Newspaper article

I am looking for a good copy of a newspaper article concerning my father (Gardner Hawkins) and some of my mother's relatives which appeared in a Saint Louis newspaper about May, 1948. Unfortunately, I have neither the exact date nor the name of the paper on the blurry copy I have here. The article mentions people from the Vanarsdall, Phelps, and Personett families. The article is a piece about crowded living conditions and lack of housing in the postwar period. I can share the text of the article with anyone who wants it.
