My greatgrandfather was James Thomas Hawkshaw(1836-1897) son of William (1806-1867) and Mary Hamilton (1811-1897) both born Ireland and married there. His father was also William. They immigrated to New Brunswick Canada and lived in a community called Clones. Look for any connection

Anyone have any information on Elizabeth Hawkshaw who married William Nathaniel Keatinge.
Do not know birth date of Elizabeth, maybe 1830's, nor the date of her marriage.
William Keatinge may have been born in Clonmel, Tipperary, so maybe Elizabeth was born around this area.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Just that far and no further (Bridgit and James). Do you have Bridgit's maiden name? I do not. Are you saying that James Hawkshaw is the son of another James Hawkshaw? I have her married to a James. I don't know about their origins in Ireland or anything either. Any information you'd like to share would be most welcome! Hi, Bridgit was my grandmother, and James my great grandfather. How far back have you gone?
I know it is possible that the Hawkshaws originally came from Lancashire, and possibly had land confiscated from them in Ireland during the time of Cromwell because one of them married a Catholic. I don't know of any other name connections and am not sure where to look.

Hi Delia, I am sorry it has taken so long to replyZ Yes, I was in Thurrock as a child, however lived in New zealand. I was wondering if it was my mother and her sister (also called marcella). Anyway, I spoke to my mum and she does not seem to remember. I can't remember if I spoke to my cousins who are of similar age to my mother. Are you still in Essex? I live in East London. Is your father/greandfather William Hawkshaw?

I am researching Robert Henry Hawkshaw born abt.1823 who married Mary Tansey born abt 1824 in Tipperary. They moved to Sheffield, England abt 1854/5.Their children Mary Ann born 1848 and Thomas born 1853 were both born before they moved. In the 1861 census Robert's occupation is down as currier. Does this ring any bells please?

We share James and Bridget in common. My great-great grandfather, Robert Hawkshaw, was the son of James Hawkshaw and Bridget ???. His son Patrick Hawkshaw married Anna Cronin and had among others my grandmother, Marion Hawkshaw, who is still kicking and still lives in the Mt. Morris area. Fling me an email if you're still reading this board, I know this message is old! According to my information, Robert Hawkshaw's first(?) cousin was Amy Hawkshaw, who became Dutchess of Hull. James and Bridget are as far back as I've gone.

This may be a very long-shot but I know that many of the Hawkshaw's with Irish roots originated from Westport.
Does the name Robert Henry Hawkshaw born Ireland circa 1823 who married Mary A Tansey and moved to Sheffield in the mid 1850's ring any bells?.
They were the parents of my great grandfather Charles Henry Edward Hawkshaw who was born in Sheffield abt 1855. I am finding it really difficult to establish exactly where in Ireland Robert Henry Hawkshaw & Mary Tansey came from.

My great grandfather was James Hawkshaw - Ayle, county mayo. One of his daughters was bridget, who emmigrated to London, UK in the 1940's. She was my grandmother, but passed away approximately 9 years ago. Two of Jame's Hawkshaw's daughters are still alive, Alice and Mary. Is this the James Hawkshaw you are talking about?

My great grandmother's maiden name was Mary Hawkshaw. She was born in Westport, Co. Mayo (or very near) in the 1870s/1880s. I have just started researching that line and will alert you if I come across anything to help you. I think that they had roots in Aughagower. This is indeed an unusual name for Ireland so we should be lucky.

There is a lot of information on this exact family in a book written by Evelyn Hawkshaw Rogers called 'Descendants of John Hawkshaw of Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, Ireland through his Second Son, James Hawkshaw'.
I ordered the book from USA as I am researching Hawkshaws in Co. Mayo too.

I am descended from the Westport Co. Mayo Hawkshaws, more particularly James Hawkshaw, born in the 1700s. It is very likely that he was related to your William Hawkshaw. The line that I am descended from is as follows:
James Hawkshaw born 1700s
Myles Hawkshaw (1797-1890)
Michael Hawkshaw (born 1826)
Mary Croker (nee Hawkshaw) (1874-1958)
Lily Griffin (nee Croker) (1900-1996)
In the book I mentioned there is a whole chapter on William Hawkshaw. He married Margaret Lavelle circa 1855, most likely in Chicago. Margaret was the daughter of William Lavelle and Mary McAndrews. She was born 30.10.1836, although her grave says 1833.
I found out about the existence of the book by searching on the internet and got it through Masthof Press.

This is what I have on William Hawkshaw and Margaret Lavelle -- unfortunately no dates.

Five children:
1. Catherine Hawkshaw married J. Weber (their kids: Edward, Josephine, Lester, Rose)

2. Lydia Hawkshaw married William Cook (Bessie, Hugh and William)

3. Margaret married Thomas J. Kane (Mabel, Emily, Myra, Esther, Elmer)

4. Belle married William Gibbons (Norman, Louise, Margaret, William)

5. Edward Hawkshaw married Susie (2 girls and Edward)

This information came to me through cousins who interviewed one of the daughters of Margaret Lavelle's sister, Ellen Garrity Pink.

My information is that Margaret and Ellen and sisters Catherine and Honore. Catherine married George Glenday and Honore either died on the voyage and/or married James Garrity.

I also have as their parents William Lavelle and Mary Castle (sp? Cassel, Casel?) But I've never been able to find them in Mayo. And now, it appears Mary's last name was McAndrews, so I will try that.

My great great-grandmother, Ann Dorothy Miller married 2nd husband, William Hawkshaw on 6 Jul 1865; a Sarah H. Miller (believed to be her sister) also married James Hawkshaw on the same day. Ann Dorothy Miller was married first to William Henry Gentry. They had one child. She was Catherine Elizabeth Gentry. My grandfather was myles hawkshaw, he had a brother called James, the family home was westport, co Mayo, Ireland. I was very interested to read of your William and James Hawkshaw of Westport. I am from Westport, Co. Mayo and my father's name was James (died 1998 aged 79) His father was James also and his grandfather I believe was Anthony. I have a cousin in New Mexico, USA who has written some books on our name and she also has connections with Co. Mayo.

I am a writer and am searching for any information at all on a Jean Hawkshaw. She may have lived in Florida in the late 1950s and worked as an actress locally for a short time. I'm trying to find more info on my Hawkshaw ancestors. We've been blessed with an extremely rare Irish name.

My earliest ancestor was James Hawkshaw, born around 1820-1825. He married Bridget ________.

Their son, William, was born in Westport, Co Mayo either 1840 or 1847. He married Julia McDonnell. William settled in Mt Morris Twp, Mich (near Flint).

There are several other Hawkshaws in the Mt Morris area, and I believe they are all related, but I don't know how. Possibly descendents of William's brothers.

Aghdrumsee - Clones Parish was a stronghold of the Hawkshaw Family. One Margaret Hawkshaw married Arthur Storey of Clontibret on 6th Sept 1835 at Aghdrumsee Church. At Aghnaglogh Townland Alex Hawkshaw was a tenant and Robert Story was the Landlord - I wonder if the Landlord married the sister or daughter of his Tenant.
My "one-name-study" of Irish Storys /Storeys traces several instances where Storys married Hawkshaws.

In my family tree, I have Willaim Hawkshaw married to an unknown Lavalle. Their daughter Louisa married Edward Maher, they are my great-great grandparents. Louisa's daughter Eva married James H. McGovern in Chicago and stayed in Chicago.

I have Louisa's siblings listed as three sisters and two brothers:

Lyde married to Jim Duffy, (children ) Bessie, Will & Hugh

Margaret married Tom Kane, (children) Elmer, Esther, Myra & Emily

Isabelle married to Will Gibbons, (children) Loiuse, Margaret, Harold, Norman & William

william hawkshaw and mary kilfoil were married 1834 in north tipperary. see marriage index for diocese of killaloe (C of I) . guilfoyle and kilfoil are common variants of same surname. could this be the couple you are looking for ? many tipperary families settled at biddulph township, ontario, where i believe your hawkshaw family were living from 1840s on

I am searching for information pertaining to Emily Hawkshaw born 21/5/1867 at Adair School, Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. Her parents were Charles Hawkshaw (scripture reader at Adair School) and Emily Wills. Emily Hawkshaw married Frederick William Dean in Gympie, Australia in 1893 and she died in Brisbane, Australia on 19/6/1940 and is buried in the South Brisbane Cemetery. Any infomation about her time in ireland and her parents or grandparents would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, none. I am a fan of the movie (termed to be one of the worst ever made) and I am curious as to what became of the cast. In the movie, Jean is a thin, attractive redhead with somewhat of an eastern accent, adding to the campy nature of the flick. I thought I saw where she gave an interview to a horror magazine on the internet, but I must have dreamt it. Curious to see what you come up with.

This is my first message and I am hoping for information on William Hawkshaw and wife Mary Guilfoyle (both born in Ireland) who had many children in Canada. One son, William, was born May 10, 1846, in Ontario, Canada. He married a Catherine Fox, June 21, 1871, in Ontario, Canada.
Their daughter Clara Maude Hawkshaw married John Ashford Chapman in Cherokee, Iowa, in 1894.

Thank you for this new information. Until now I knew only that this couple was born in Ireland. Now I may be able to locate their home there. This is exciting! This couple did indeed live in Biddulph Township, Ontario, in the 1840's. What do you know about the connection between Tipperary and this part of Canada?
Since I know nothing yet about genealogy research in Ireland, how do I find the marriage index for the diocese of Killaloe? Is there a website or do I need to write to a specific place for the documentation?

I dont have any info on a William H. But I am looking for any info on Mary Ann( born abt 1860s), her father Michael (1830s)and Grandfather Myles Hawkshaw(1800s). I am planning a trip to Mayo in a few years and Im trying to get leads for research before I go. Please contact me if you have anything that might help, or think that I might have info you need.
Also I think the name shows up as Houghshaw in certain records
