Classification: Query
Surnames: Hawksley, Goodwin, Workman
I am still working hard on the Hawksley-Goodwin-Workman family. Recently had a letter from a Hawksley whose ancestry goes back to county York, and since somewhere it seems to be family lore that this particular Hawksley branch (the one that came to Aroostook County, Maine) may go back to that very same county, I hope this contact may be fruitful.
With regard to the siblings, John Goowin Hawksley, Margaret Elizabeth Hawksley, Sarah Brown Hawksley, and Mary Hawksley, nothing further has been obtained.
As they were born in Fredericton, I hope someday that I or someone else will be able to get to the city and check out the records, particularly those of the military presence between the 1770's and 1820's. As their father was "an Englishman", he was quite possibly a soldier in the War of 1812 (or, if old enough, in the Revolution).
The mother, Mary Goodwin, was born about 1787 in St. John, New Brunswick. She died in May 1868 in Hodgdon, Maine, at that time Mary Madigan (her 2nd husband was William Madigan).
Despite the extensive details gleaned from my visit to NEHGS, we are still no closer to learning the name of the Hawksley who came to New Brunswick and married Mary Goodwin.
Meanwhile, we will be moving next fall to Alaska. I do not see myself getting to New Brunswick before then, as my husband will be doing another remote in Korea for the year. I'm not sure how entertained my 5 year old son will be while I go through records and cemeteries, so I have to content myself with continuing to do my research by mail and the net.
But still here, still looking, and hoping to start up a DNA Project on the Hawksley name as well! It would be great to see if there are any matches between the Mars Hill male Hawksley descendants, and those from the UKK. and Australia! It might help point us in the right direction.
It is a priority before my husband departs in October to get this project started, and I will certainly post information once it is ready for participants.
