Hawksley DNA Project

The Hawksley DNA project is underway!

After the holidays, we will be testing the John Goodwin Hawksley (of Fredericton, New Brunswick & Mars Hill, ME) line through my son.

Anyone with the Hawksley surname is invited and urged to participate. Please visit the project's website:

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hawksley

Thank you very much!
Wendy L.
NB & ME Hawksley - still searching, and moving

I am still working hard on the Hawksley-Goodwin-Workman family. Recently had a letter from a Hawksley whose ancestry goes back to county York, and since somewhere it seems to be family lore that this particular Hawksley branch (the one that came to Aroostook County, Maine) may go back to that very same county, I hope this contact may be fruitful.

With regard to the siblings, John Goowin Hawksley, Margaret Elizabeth Hawksley, Sarah Brown Hawksley, and Mary Hawksley, nothing further has been obtained.

As they were born in Fredericton, I hope someday that I or someone else will be able to get to the city and check out the records, particularly those of the military presence between the 1770's and 1820's. As their father was "an Englishman", he was quite possibly a soldier in the War of 1812 (or, if old enough, in the Revolution).

The mother, Mary Goodwin, was born about 1787 in St. John, New Brunswick. She died in May 1868 in Hodgdon, Maine, at that time Mary Madigan (her 2nd husband was William Madigan).

Despite the extensive details gleaned from my visit to NEHGS, we are still no closer to learning the name of the Hawksley who came to New Brunswick and married Mary Goodwin.

Meanwhile, we will be moving next fall to Alaska. I do not see myself getting to New Brunswick before then, as my husband will be doing another remote in Korea for the year. I'm not sure how entertained my 5 year old son will be while I go through records and cemeteries, so I have to content myself with continuing to do my research by mail and the net.

But still here, still looking, and hoping to start up a DNA Project on the Hawksley name as well! It would be great to see if there are any matches between the Mars Hill male Hawksley descendants, and those from the U.K. and Australia! It might help point us in the right direction.

It is a priority before my husband departs in October to get this project started, and I will certainly post information once it is ready for participants.

Wendy L.
Mars Hill - Hawksley family origins - new info

Alrighty... A visit to the New England Historic Genealogical Society to view the Isaac Adams papers in the R. Stanton Avery Collection gave me some new info to share!

Mary Goodwin married a Hawksley (an Englishman). Their children were:

John Goodwin
Mary
Sarah Brown
Margaret Elizabeth

John married Lucy Lilley
Mary - no info
Sarah married John Wellington Adams
Margaret married Isaac Benjamin Adams

John Wellington Adams and Isaac Benjamin Adams are brothers.

Mary Goodwin's father was a loyalist from New Jersey, whose plantation there was confiscated. He brought his family to St. John, New Brunswick and served the British until the end of the war.

Mary Goodwin's mother's maiden name was Workman, and she entreated her husband not to go to war - she sympathized with the Americans - but to no avail.

Mr. Hawksley died (I do not know when), and then Mary married her 2nd husband - William Madigan - and they had a daughter, Isabell Madigan.

Greater details coming when I post my updated family tree to Rootsweb. :-)

Wendy Hawksley
autumndivona@yahoo.com

Sarah Brown Hawksley

As you know, I am researching John Goodwin Hawksley, my husband's 4th great-grandfather.

I believe that Margaret Elizabeth Hawksley who married Isaac Adams in 1833 in Prince William, York County, New Brunswick is his sister.

John was born in 1810, Margaret in 1816, both in Frederickton, NB.

I also found a Sarah Brown Hawksley, born abt 1814 in NB, and married in 1831 to a John Wellington Adams.

Right now, I have conjectured at a sibling relationship there; Sarah and John had two daughters:

Margaret Elizabeth, b. abt 1831, died 1912 in Ashland, Aroostook, Maine

Huldah, b. abt 1840, died 1915, probably also in Aroostook County.

Sarah apparently died before 1881, when her husband is found as a widower in the Canadian census. He was living in Prince William, NB at the time.

Any thoughts on this Sarah Brown Hawksley?

Wendy (Wood) Hawksley
Delaware
autumndivona@yahoo.com

I can provide some more details for Samuel & Mary's children incl family of Emily (Mary Clarissa) b 1882, but it sounds like I have as much info as you do in regards to Mary Elizabeth Hall/Tyler/Hawksley. Contact me if I can help.

HAWKSLEY/YATES connection found

Hi, Since posting the above in 2002, I have found the connection between the HAWKSLEY and YATES families. Thomas Yates of Manchester married Mary Hawksley of Bramcote, Nottinghamshire on 2 June 1789. They appear had at least five children, one of whom was my gt. gt. grandfather George Yates. I am re-posting on this subject to see if anyone out there is descended from any of the children, who are:-
Henrietta Yates born Manchester 1795
Thomas Hawksley Yates born Manchester 1798
John Yates born Manchester 1799
George Yates born Manchester 1801
Elizabeth Yates born Manchester 1804
Here's hoping
David A. Hawksley Yates
Hi,
Did you ever get any replies to this query of yours? I don't know if it is relevant, but on the Hwaksley side of my family I have 3 Sarahs, 2 Elizabeths and a Richard but his date is too early as it is born 1768, Nottingham. It could however be an earlier part of your branch.
Cheers, David.

For John Goodwin Hawksley researchers...

I'm not sure if anyone has ever followed up on Margaret Elizabeth Hawksley who married Isaac Adams, so I ordered some microfilms from the FHL on Saturday. I expect them to arrive sometime in March.

I feel we may be able to learn more about the family through the following:

1. Baptisms of Hawksley children
2. Baptisms of Adams children
3. Baptisms of McAtargart and/or Madigan children
4. Land records

I have ordered the microfilm with all the vital records of Mars Hill, Maine from 1786-1942; York County, New Brunswick Land records for 1795-1831; and Church Records of Prince William from 1791-1970.

Since Margaret Hawksley was married in Prince William, maybe I can find the marriage. And maybe it will name parents and/or witnesses.

So if this is uncharted territory for any John Goodwin Hawksley researchers, let me know and I will share everything I find.

Wendy (Wood) Hawksley
autumndivona@juno.com
Camden, DE
My 3xgt grandparents were Thomas Yates (born c. 1769 in Lancashire) and Mary HAWKSLEY (born c. 1769 in Nottingham). They had five children Henrietta, Elizabeth, John, George (my 2xgt grandfather) and Thomas HAWKSLEY Yates. I just wondered if anyone out there can relate to any of these five off-spring?

Cheers,
David.

Aroostook County Hawksley connection to McAtargart & Madigan families

It seems there may be a connection between the Hawksley families of Mars Hill and Hodgdon to the McAtargart and Madigan families of that area.

McAtargart and Madigan family members resided with Margaret Elizabeth (Hawksley) Adams in the 1860 census. I believe the connection is maternal (perhaps aunts).

As Margaret states her mother as being born in Ireland in the 1880 census (for whatever reason, John Goodwin Hawksley's family is nowhere to be found in that census), and the McAtargart and Madigan families also go back to Ireland, this seems a reasonable conclusion.

Unfortunately, I have found very little on the McAtargart and Madigan families. Perhaps no one is researching them, or there are no living descendants.

This will probably require a trip directly to Hodgdon, Maine to try to learn more about the families and determine the connection.

Wendy (Wood) Hawksley
Camden, DE
autumndivona@juno.com
I live in USA, so am just trying to learn to research in Durham.

Dear John,
Let's keep on crossing the t's and dotting the i's. Thank you for your reply. It is perhaps part of the way the internet is changing our stories that is important for all of us. Suddenly we are part of a greater history and connection. I have a question for you. Part of my interest, and playwriting activity has been concerned with the Great War. I have written two plays about WW1 and I have one in development for film. Consequently I have a good deal of material about veterans. Here's the question - Charles Hawksley, Private, 124940, 167th. Machine Gun Corps...died, February 24th., 1918, age 23. Son of Mr.amd Mrs. Hawksley of Sutton, Retford. Husband of Mary Jane Hawksley of 21 Bothamsall Retford, Nottinghamshire. He was laid to rest at Maroeuil British cemetary, Pas de Calais, France. Is he familiar to you?
I will send you my Grandfathers name. I'm not clear on the full name.
Thanks again for your sharing. I'll be in touch soon.

Fred.

Thanks for your response. I wonder, since you state that part of your family moved to Hull
in Yorkshire in the 1800's, if you are connected to Chas Hawksley, listed as a gentleman living at 2 York Parade in Hull. This information I found in the transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for Hull
in White's Directory of 1840. I also seem to remember being told by my Mother that my Great Grandmother owned substantial lands in or around Cottingham just outside of Hull. I think Hawksley's Market Garden still exists there. I haven't been home since 1987. My Father started work as an apprentice flour miller around 1914 in Boroughbridge at the Mill there. My Mothers maiden name was Moon. My Grandfather (Fathers side) served with the Hull Tradesmen Pals in the Great War and was wounded in the chest during the battle of the Somme. My Fathers Mother died when he was three months old and he lived with and was raised by his aunt who owned, I think, a Fish and Chip Shop in the Scot Street area of Hull. Again thanks for the reply and I look forward to sharing.

Re: John Goodwin Hawksley, b. 1811 CAN

Hi again Ray, and any Mars Hill Hawksley researchers...

I would like to spread this news among others interested in the family...

No doubt you are aware of Margaret Elizabeth Hawksley, b. 1816 in Frederickton, New Brunswick (where John Goodwin Hawksley was b. in 1810). Margaret married Isaac Adams and they moved to Hodgdon, Maine.

I THINK I have a connection on the mother of the Hawksley sibs, but I need help working it out.

Attempts to find John Hawksley in the 1880 census have been fruitless. He is in the census of 1870 and also in 1860 (listed therein as "John OXLA").

However, in the 1880 census, Margaret (Hawksley) Adams gives her father's birthplace as New Brunswick, and her mother's birthplace as IRELAND.

In the 1860 census, she resides with the following:

Mary Madigan, 75, b. New Brunswick (b. abt 1785)
Margaret McAtargart, 65, b. Ireland (b. 1795-1808)
Charlres McAtargart, 22, b. New Brunswick (b. abt 1838)
Margaret McAtargart, 19, b. New Brunswick (b. abt 1841)
Elizabeth McAtargart, 17, b. New Brunswick (b. abt 1843).

Margaret McAtargart's husband, Edward, lives next door. The 1850 census also shows daughter, Eleanor, b. abt 1834.

Mary Madigan (1788-1868) was the wife of William Madigan (1792-1873), and they had a daughter - Isabel E.C. Madigan (1819-1898), who married John J. Royal.

So, the questions are:

What are Mary Madigan and Margaret McAtagart's maiden names?

When did they marry their husbands?

Did either have a prior marriage to a Hawksley?

If not, how are they related to Margaret (Hawksley) Adams?

I speculate that Margaret, born in Ireland, COULD be Margaret Hawksley's mother. OR Mary Madigan could, but only if the 1860 census is incorrect and she was born in Ireland, not New Brunswick.

I want to know how this all connects - it could be our chance to at last locate the parents of John Goodwin Hawksley.

Wendy (Wood) Hawksley
Dover, DE
autumndivona@juno.com

Hi Ray,

This August, I intend to visit Mars Hill, ME and maybe even New Brunswick. My husband has so much leave saved up, that when he returns from Korea, we intend to take at least a month off so I can do research back home in New England.

Have you visited the Carleton County pages at Rootsweb? That address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcarlet/

The 1851 Census used to be there... I'm not sure where it went, and it's been a while since I visited the site (due to computer problems).

I presume that Goodwin was either John Hawksley's mother's maiden name OR his father's mother's maiden name.

I am also in contact with a gentleman whose father's first name was Hawksley and while there are Goodwins in their family, they can't seem to find a connection to anyone with a Hawksley surname - yet there must be one for the name to recur so frequently. For not only was it his father's first name, but it is my contact's middle name.

But that is over in England. Still, if we can figure any of this out, it may provide a clue.

My focus is trying to determine what ship brought Hawksleys to Canada. I do not know if an obituary or death certificate of John Goodwin Hawksley would tell us anything, but I intend to try to find something in Mars Hill.

Done Babbling!
Wendy (Wood) Hawksley

Hi Wendy,

I do not have an answer other than the lack of records or loss of such. I was wondering where or how to gain access to the 1851 Census of Woodstock, Carleton Co., New Brunswick.
I have copies of the 1870 census and still ponder what John's middle name was for years I was told that it was Allen only to find on later records as G for Goodwin. The 1870 Census shows it more like a J . Any thoughts?

Ray

Having come to a standstill I am trying to sort the Sheffield families hoping that I may find a connection in that strong hold. I would be most interested to know more about your William. I have a 1861 census index for Sheffield, there are 3 William's age's 1, 13 and 40. I also have (thanks to Ted Stephenson) parish records at South Wingfield.

John in Nottingham

Hi John
Thanks so much for that information. We cannot place either of the two Edwards at this time, but it could be that some of our birthdates are incorrect. Most of the family had the christian name Edward John, rather than Edward or John by itself. The others all correspond to names and birthdates that we think we can match up.
We will be visiting our daughter in London in April, and may be able to visit the church in Nottingham, so thanks for that information also. It all adds pieces to the puzzle.
Kind regards, Jennie Champion

Dear Jennie
I am not connected to your HAWKSLEY'S. But I can help with the following..
John HAWKSLEY married Mary WHITTLE 25th October 1803 in St Mary's Parish in Nottingham (city). St Mary's church still stands and is the mother church. HAWKSLEY baptism's to a John and Mary range from 1781 to 1818 (information at hand) Which would indicate two families with John and Mary would exist. Baptism's at St Mary's from 1803 are...
Ann HAWKSLEY 17th Sept 1804 of John & Mary
Edward HAWKSLEY 24th June 1808 of John & Mary
Edward HAWKSLEY 11th July 1808 of John & Mary
Mary HAWKSLEY 24th Sept 1810 of John & Mary
Ann HAWKSLEY 22nd May 1813 of John & Mary, Charlotte Street. Fathers occupation BARBER
Eliza HAWKSLEY 5th March 1816 of John & Mary. Charlotte Street. Fathers occupation BARBER.
John HAWKSLEY 28th December 1818 to John & Mary. Glasshouse Lane. Fathers occupation HAIR DRESSER.

I cannot find John's baptism (1776) nor his burial (1857) or determine who his parents are with this info at hand.

John in Nottingham formally of Hastings, Hawkes Bay, NZ

Dear Fred

Charles 124940 is my grandad. His correct and full name is Charles Frederick Hawksley Blackburn born 6th June 1894 at Sutton cum Lound, Notts. Parents being (Charles)Henry and Jessie Hawksley Blackburn. My grandmother who I remember very well died in 1956. She was Mary Jane Moody (Polly) of Bothamsall village near Retford.
They had married at Retford in 1916. My dad, also Charles Frederick was born 1917.
My grandfather Charles was one of 9 children. All 9 were baptised Hawksley BLACKBURN. Strange thing was they used Hawksley in school records and from day to day. The Blackburn came out only in officaldoom baptism's, marriage's etc.

After some research it turn's out my great grandfather was born 1863 at Worksop, Notts prior to his parents Charles and Sarah Hawksley's marriage. So had been registered Henry Hawksley BLACKBURN his mother being Sarah Blackburn. When his parents became Mr and Mrs Hawksley, he naturally grew up Henry Hawksley. He seemed to have had the Charles added that made him at his marriage to Jessie and the baptism's of their children Charles Henry Hawksley Blackburn.
The male line on my tree is...
Robert Hawksley born 1720/30ish somewhere
Robert Hawksley born 1750 Misson Notts
Robert Hawksley born 1776 East Retford
Henry Hawksley born 1810 East Retford
Charles Hawksley born 1840 East Retford
Charles Henry Hawksley Blackburn 1863
Charles Frederick H B 1898
Charles Frederick H B 1917
Then me JBHB 1944

If you would like a printout of the Hawksley's in my tree I'd be pleased to send you a copy. Send me your postal address off message board.

I'll get back to you regards a Alice and Harry.

John

John,
I should also include Harry Hawksley, Lance Corporal, S/22249, 1st./4th.Bn., Seaforth Highlanders, died July 11th.,1918, age 21, son of Johna and Elizabeth Hawksley of 1 New Cross Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Also, my Father spoke to me about Alice Hawksley who he suggested was an actress/vaudeville performer. Not a well respected accupation at the turn of the century, but, as
I am involved in the theatre I would like to find out.

I will be in touch again soon with other names.

Thanks again John.

Fred.
