Ancestry.com gave a hint for my family tree regarding my grandmother. All of the information was the same, date of birth and death. Who she was married to, his birthday and death. The only thing different was the last name was spelled Hawley where my baby book it is spelled howloey.

Now I am curious to know if the last name was spelled wrong.

Information I have for my grandmother is she was married to James Laughlin and some of there children are Randy, Clinton, Terry, Pam (Those are all I know).

If someone can help out in any way let me know.

William Hawley

I have been in Connecticut researching my family background and made a major find. My brother and I visited the Redding, Connecticut Town Hall and were finally able to uncover the mystery of Harry Hawley's father. Harry Hawley is the father of my Civil War ancestor, Orrin B. Hawley. The Hawley ancestor that we have been diligently searching for. The following is a quote from The Redding Connecticut Vital Statistics Volume 2 (1752-1852), page 327:

"On 17th day of Nov 2, 1788 personally appeared William Hawley of Redding and made oath that he had then in his possession one negro boy named Harry born on the 1st day of December 1785 of a negro woman a slave for life and a boy named Peter born of the same woman the 5th of August 1788 according to the best of his knowledge. Sworn before me Lem E. Sanford, Registrar. The above is a true record recorded 7th day of Nov 1788. L. Sanford Town Clerk."

The phrase "slave for life" really got to me and has taken me some time to digest that phrase. Now question arises, "Did William Hawley impregnate this negro woman, a slave for life?" We think that he did. This opens up a new chapter in the search of the Hawley Tree, the African connection. Now if we can get some information on who this negro woman was and where she came from we should be able to connect the dots. Can anyone suggest where I go to find out more information on William Hawley and his possession of two slaves and where they were from?

I just found the note today and can't remember.

This looks like the family, even though no children were mentioned in the death notice:

1920 Leonia, Bergen, New Jersey
Edwin C Hawley, 38, abt 1882 Massachusetts, HOH,
Winfred Hawley, 36, abt 1884 Massachusetts, wife
Helen F Hawley, 13, abt 1907 China, daughter
Chester W Hawley, 10, abt 1910 China, son

This Edwin was a salesman for an export house and the one in the death notice was a manager for an American company.

At this time Mary and Louie descendants are unknown. Any leads will be appreciated.
Thanks, Gil

I would be interested in info. re: the newspaper article about your Hawley family, the date etc. It would be interesting if your ancestors lived there when mine did. Lori Roberts

Lester Hawley

I am unable to locate parents for Lester Hawley born abt 1800 either in Vermont or Connecticut. I believe he died between 1850 and 1860. I believe that his wife, Nancy Harris either died also, or was unable to care for their small children after his death. I based this on the fact that two of their small children are living, seemingly as orphans, in a household other than their parents or siblings on the 1860 Perry County, Indiana census records.
---------------------
Lester Hawley purchased land in Perry County, Indiana on three dates, that I could find:

7 NOV 1837
NENW Sec/Blk 24 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

1 AUG 1839
NWNE Sec/Blk 24 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

10 APR 1849
SWSW Sec/Blk 13 TWP 4-S Range 1-W Fract/Sec No Meridian 2nd PM

-----------------------
I found Lester on only 3 census records
1830 in Crawford County, Indiana
1840 in Perry County, Indiana shows two children under 5
1850 in Perry County, Indiana shows all the children, and indicates Vermont as Lester's birth place.

I found Margaret L and William H Hawley on the 1870 census in Perry County on which they indicate a Connecticut birthplace for their father. This is where I may go wrong, I'm assuming that these are the same Margaret L and William H that were found in Perry County on the 1850 census.

Now, correct me if I have any mistakes. I made some assumptions based on location and timing. Some of these records were pulled from seemingly unattached family trees. I need help verifying this information.

I.
Joseph O. Hawley & Apena of Homer, Cortland, New York

I am trying to find out how my line of Hawleys is connected. My ancestor, Joseph O. Hawley was born about 1772/1773 (I am not sure where, but probably Vermont, Connecticut or Massachusetts). I have checked the Hawley Record on rootsweb, and have found no matches (the other Joseph Hawleys in the Record don't seem to match for various reasons).

He married, circa 1800-1804, Apena (Emerson ?), born between 1779 and 1787 in New Hampshire. Joseph is in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census records for Homer, Cortland, New York, and died there on 30 May 1847 (Glenwood Cemetery records, Homer NY).

His wife Apena appears in the 1850 census and died on 4 Jul 1857. They had a son Edmund H. Hawley (1807-1866), a daughter Polly, probably two other daughters Amy and Minerva and possibly another son. According to the census records of 1850-1870, the children report having been born in Massachusetts and Vermont.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Brett

She was daughter to Ferdinand Wyckoff and Susan Phillips.
I can't seem to get past Hiram H Holley in my research. His son Ferdinand married Mary lent daughter of Alfred Lent and Catharine Lent.
We recently had a Holley DNA Test done and it links to the Stamford Holleys. However, in researching ALL the Stamford Holleys I see no Hiram born when my GGGrandfather was. Does anyone have any information? Thanking you in advance
Bonnie Holley

Does anyone have connections with any HAWLEYS in Manchester or Penistone around 1880s? My gf was Albert HAWLEY, his father was Thomas and gf was Jeremiah. That's all I know. I found a Jeremiah in Manchester and one earlier in Penistone, Yorkshire, but can't positively claim them (him) as mine. Kaye Hawley, Perth, Western Australia.

Still Searching--Hawley's in MI

I'm still searching for my Michigan Hawley's. I will go without giving first names as doing so hasn't brought me any luck..because my grandfather used many alias'.

He was a Hawley/Halley/Howley supposedly born in NY around 1873 to 1878. He came to Michigan as a young man and went to work in East Jordan in the steel foundries.

He met and married a young gal by the name of Hazel Keech..her father was Otto Keech. Circa 1910. No divorce or death papers were found. There was possibly one child from this union.

Around 1915, he then married a young woman named Sarah Elizabeth Washburn. They had one child soon after who died and is buried in Boyne City MI, her name was Minnie.

They then moved to Ohio (Washburn's moved also), where they had 8 more children..all born in Ohio. In 1930 they moved back to Michigan, Otsego County, where they had 6 more children, the last, a baby girl who was stillborn in 1939.

He died in 1967, she in 1988. Both are buried in Vanderbilt MI. If any of this sounds slightly familiar, please contact me.

Margaret Snider Hawley in 1881 Hallowell

I have finally figured out who this Margaret Hawley was who was in Hallowell, PE County for the 1881 census:

Household:

Name Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Occupation Religion

MARGARET HAWLEY W Female German 33 Ontario Weslyan Methodist
ANNIE HAWLEY Female German 8 Ontario Weslyan Methodist
NETTIE HAWLEY Female German 6 Ontario Weslyan Methodist
WILLIAM HAWLEY Male German 3 Ontario Weslyan Methodist

Source Information:
Census Place Hallowell, Prince Edward, Ontario
Family History Library Film 1375873
NA Film Number C-13237
District 119
Sub-district I
Division 2
Page Number 15
Household Number 74

There was a Margaret HARTIN born about 1846 @ Camden East who died in 1876 of TB. I thought that Margaret in 1881 Hallowell was same Margaret and that the 1876 death reg. was for someone else. Margaret Hartin Hawley was the daughter of Henry Hartin and his wife Margaret Reid. This Margaret was married to Joseph Wesley Hawley who moved to Hastings County and re-married to Maryetta Switzer in 1878, daughter of Norris Switzer and Delilah Vardy or Varty.

Annie Maud Hawley whom I thought was the daughter of Margaret Hartin Hawley was the daughter of Margaret Sophrona Snider (hence the "Margaret S." on some records) and William Hawley who died of typhoid fever @ Ernestown on Dec. 2, 1878. So that IS William's widow Margaret nee Snider who went to Hallowell in Prince Edward County by 1881 to be near her own Snider family- right next door to her in 1881 is a Peter Snider with wife Sarah that I think are her parents. Does anyone know anything about this Peter and Sarah? I believe Sarah's maiden name was Maybee or Mabee, as per death reg. of her daughter Jane.

On the marriage reg. for William Hawley and Margaret Snider it says her father was Stephen but I cannot find a Stephen Snider and I am willing to bet that her father was Peter. William and Margaret were married June 17, 1867 in Hastings County- her given name on that marriage reg. has been transcribed as "Tiphony". This William Hawley 1840/1841-1878 was the son of Sheldon Stoughton Hawley 1820-1905 and his wife Sarah Agnes Thompson. Sheldon Stoughton Hawley was the son of Johnston Hawley 1794-1885 and his wife Elizabeth/Betsy Baker 1794-1884.

On that 1881 census Margaret has 3 children: Annie Maude age 8, Nettie age 6 and William age 3. Nettie died in 1899 of TB and is buried at the Riverside Cem. @ Napanee.

I do not know what happened to Margaret and William's little son William Hawley who is age 3 on that 1881 census- I looked high and low for him in 1901 and 1911, and for a death reg. for him, but so far nothing.

I know that Margaret and Annie Maude were in Napanee in 1901, they are in Jim and Patti Keller's publication for 1901 Napanee but there are a few pages missing from the online census transcription for that same place; Margaret and Annie are in Jim's book but not online (as are a few other families)....

This Annie Maude Hawley married William Bell Grieve on October 25, 1905 in L & A County, Ontario and they went to Calgary, Alberta sometime before 1911 with Mom Margaret Snider Hawley. They are on the 1911 census in Calgary, Alberta. I do not know what hap. to them after that, but William Grieve is buried @ Riverside Cem. so he either came back to L & A County in later years or his body was shipped home for burial. There is no sign of Margaret S. Snider Hawley being buried in Ontario, she could be, but she may also have died out west here somewhere; ditto for Annie Maude.

Margaret Sophrona Snider and William Hawley also had a little son Peter Frederick Hawley (another reason I think Margaret's father was Peter Snider) born 1870, died Dec. 20, 1878 (twenty-six days after his father died) also of typhoid fever, buried at Riverside Cem./Napanee, as are his sister Nettie Hawley and their father William Hawley (1840-1878).

Hope this info helps someone.

Nora

Picture #2 (about 1890): Woodhouse Family: Grandma, Grandpa, Charles, Ben, Maria and Walter. In picture #3: Maria is id'ed as the only sister. From another paper I have it lists Charles Edward Woodhouse married to a Helen Bowhall, her second marriage to a Clarence Hotaling. Mr Finnegan is a name my father remembers as an engineer on the Erie Canal, unknown on the relation tie in. Do these people sound fimilar to anyone?

I am a Hawley, and my father is from Washington State in the Bellingham/Bremerton area. There is a family book titled "Squeemouse," and it tells the history of the Hawley family. I believe one of the decendents was James Vernon Hawley, or it may have just been Vernon Hawley. If anyone has any information on the Hawley family and their decendents from this area please let me know. I thought Hawley was a really uncommon name, I had no idea there were so many Hawleys in the U.S.

C.F. Hawley and wife Nancy are listed with following grantees for Floyd County, Indiana property: John H. Baldwin and wife Amanda, H.J. Billings and wife Mary Ann, J.P. Young and wife Amelia, T.S. Nadel and wife Elizabeth and A. Baker and wife Nancy. The property was sold to Hannah B. Hartley and the group purchased it from N.H. Cobb. The property was bought in Aug. 1860 and conveyed in Dec. 1860 at half the price they paid for it. The names Baldwin and Billings are in my family tree. Does anyone recognize these others and have them related to Baldwin and Billings?

Richard Wm. Hawley b. 8/24/1930 Ohio

I'm seeking information on the above mentioned Hawley, born Freedom Twp. Wood county Ohio. to Carl V. Hawley and Sarah Elizabeth Washburn.

Richard would have been my dad's baby brother. My dad was Calvin Hawley born Bradner Ohio, Wood county in 1928. Not long after Richard was born the Hawley's moved back to Michigan, however Richard was not included in that trip and my dad never remembered him, so he was never brought to Michigan. My dad had a brother named Johnny who was born in 1920, and he always thought Johnny was Richard aka Jackie. However according to birth records this is not so. I do not believe he died as an infant as there is no record of this.

I believe that Richard may have been taken in and raised by the Washburn family who lived in Ohio also, John and Elizabeth or Lizzie..or possibly one of their children or family friends.

If anyone has any information on Richard I sure would appreciate an email. He's one of my brick walls and possibly still alive. Please email me at below email address.

thank you
Billie Jo Hawley-Miller (millers@gtlakes.com)
Michigan

Hawley/Holley/Holly in Ohio and Connecticut

I'm looking for information about the Hawley/Holley/Holly family in the Trumbull/Portage/Geauga County area of northern Ohio. I'm particularly interested in information about William Hawley/Holly who lived in the area between 1800 and 1860. William was born in Connecticut, I believe, to Elnathan Holly, but I can't substantiate this. William was married to Julia and they had at least 5 children: Nathan, Edwin, Laura, Mattie, and Eugene. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm looking for any information about the parents or family of John Hawley (Holly) of Salisbury, CT, born ca. 1754. He moved to Cornwall, VT around 1775 and then to Malone, NY around 1807. He died in Malone in 1827, age 73. His wife was Mary --- and they had several children. It is believed he had a brother named Stephen, and possibly a father by the same name.

Most internet sites show this John as the son of Robert Hawley of Stratford, CT (born 1726) but I suspect this information may be inaccurate.

Any reliable sources would be appreciated.

Ned Hawley

Luther is allegedly the father of Rhoda Hawley, born about 1753, according to some Hawley data. She allegedly married Benjamin Covey, about 1770.

I know that Benjamin and his wife Rhoda, lived in Mt. Washington, Massachusetts and Northeast, NY, before moving to Albany in 1800. She and Benjamin are buried in Spencer's Corners, Salisbury, Ct, which used to be in Northeast, NY. Their first son, b. 1774, was Luther Holly, Holley Covey.

I can find nothing on either Luther, or Rhoda, or where they came from.

Does anyone have any information on either of them?

I am looking for information on Hawleys from New York State.
Number One is: Frank Hawley of Phelps, NY who married Mary Eloise Conley of Phelps, NY on March 13, 1878. I think in Ontario County, NY.

Number Two is: Frank Hawley who married a Mary L. Conley. They had three daughters, names unknown. She would have been the daughter of David R. and Angeline Hill Conley. Her parents were married in 1853 and she was the second child of the marriage.
I have wondered if she could be the Mary Conley of Number One.

Number Three is: Miss Della Hawley of Middlesex, County of Yates, New York who married a Mr. Charles Emerson Shattuck of the town of Jerusalem, County of Yates, NY. He was the only son of Darwin and Christana Shattuck.
They were married in Middlesex on August 27, 1874. They had three daughters: Lulu, Ethel, Hazel and a son, Lavere. Charles died in Depew, NY on June 30, 1905 and Mrs. Della Mary Hawley Shattuck died at Crosby at her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Giroux's home on Saturday, October 24, 1942 at the age of 87. Daughters: Mrs. Lulu S. Miller, Mrs. Leroy Baker, and Mrs. Hazel Giroux, Son: Mr. Charles L. Shattuck.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Hawley/Edler family of Effie Louise Hawley

I am searching for information on my grandmother Effie Louise Hawley. She moved to Fairfield Iowa around 1916, employed as a housekeeper for my grandfather Frederick Henry Edler, and his wife Emeline who was ill. After the death of his wife he married Effie and they had a daughter Darpha Mae (my mother). It's possible they moved from Fairfield, Iowa to Missouri before they married. Effie died 10 months after my mother was born. We believe Effie's father was named Frank Hawley and he lived in New York. Any information will be appreciated.

The Hawley Record, compiled by Elias Sill Hawley and published in 1890, lists an Ebenezer Hawley, son of Ensign Abel Hawley and Abigail Root, of Meriden and Farmington, Connecticut.

Ebenezer may have been married twice, first wife unknown and second wife may have been Olive Higbie. His children are given as Sally, Isaac, Ira & Hiram Hawley. His siblings are Eben Royce (Rice) Hawley & Abigail.

His father Ensign Abel Hawley married first Mary Gridley and had children Elisha, Ruth, Josiah, Abel, Oliver, Ezekiel, & Mary Hawley.

Hope this fits your research. Also, please check www.hawleysociety.org
If you have good sources for this person's family, The Hawley Society would love to have copies for our archives.

Trudy Hawley
thawley@prodigy.net
