William Haworth c1874, Burnley Lancashire UK

I am trying to track down further information on my great Grandfather, William Haworth who was born in Burnely Lancashire, UK around 1874. I believe he had 2 brothers who were called John and James. I am led to believe that they migrated to the USA in the early 1900's, on of the brothers stayed, William went back to the UK and the other brother died of TB (probabaly in the USA). My understanding is that William married a Hannah Sagar when he returned to Lancashire. Any information on William, particularly details of his parents, or brothers would be much appreciated.
Heather Dawson-Howard

The GRO Indexes are the National Indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales. Once an event has been registered locally then it is notified to the GRO who compile a central Index every 3 months. These can be viewed online on various websites for payment (inc Ancestry) or for free at FreeBMD (a volunteer project which is not yet complete).

The can also be viewed for free on fiche at County Records Offices and LDS family centers.

If your ancestor comes from a county which has a local BMD project (like Lancashire and Cheshire) then volunteers are transcribing the local lists and you can order from a local Register Office.

I have put together a list of some websites I have found useful for researching in the UK http://www.genealogy.bathgatehall.co.uk/UKuseful.htm or see the board info link on the right of this page.

Are you sure the mother's name was LURNER? That is a very unusual name and I have not heard of it before - could it be TURNER with a flourish ?

Have you found their marriage? - If I can be of any further assistance please email me at fiona@bathgatehall.co.uk

Fiona

Thanks for your suggestions. I have in fact acquired the Marriage Certificate of Andrew but the father's name is not clearly written but does look like Thos. I thought this was strange to have written his name on an official document using an abbreviated form whereas I felt Tom would have been acceptable. I am now trying to verify Andrew's DOB as a Birth Certificate would clarify matters for me.
In the meantime I was hoping that a reply from lisahowarth73
posting made in 2005 would possibly provide an extra bit of info.

The easiest way to find out who the parents of John or Andrew would be to get their marriage certificates as this would name the fathers. As both were born after 1837 it would then reasonably easy (providing the parents registered the births!) to get the mothers' names.

Have a look at the Board Information on the rhs of the screen to get links to websites with online BMD Indices.
There is also a link to the online Lancs OPC site where volunteers are transcribing church registers

I don't know how much HAWORTH research you have done but the surname is extremely common in this area of Lancashire and the spelling also changes with the wind direction sometimes!

Fiona (board admin)

Hello my names is Malcolm Haworth and I am also tracing my Family Tree. I have possibly confirmed that my gg grandfather was an Andrew Haworth/Howarth who was born in Blackburn around 1838. I note his first child, Thomas,my great grandfather, was born at Hoddlesden which is very adjacent to Pickup Bank. I wonder if John Haworth/Howarth could be a brother to Andrew? Have you by now traced the parents of John as I think Andrew's father was called Thomas?

Nathaniel Haworth's wife was
Anna Oliphant, her sister was married to Felix
Earnest who has a nice big stone at the
cemetery and he was in the Rev. War. He was a
preacher at the early church and the Earnest's take
care of the church now.
Hi,

It's hard to keep all the Absaloms straight. There
is one in every family and every generation.
Original George had a Absalom and he died in
Va. That Absalom had a Absalom and he died
in Tn and that Absalom had a son Nathaniel who
died in Tn and Nathaniel had Absalom Duffle who
was born in Tn and died in Missouri. That's my
line and at least down to Nathaniel sounds like
yours. The library has a cemetery book that
was read back when you could read the stones.
I understand Greenville just opened a new
genealogy library. Last Sept it was a tiny
room in the main library with one big table
for everyone. But everyone was just super.
If you are related to Nathaniel you are also
related to the Oliphants. John Oliphant is
buried at Ebenezer and he was in the Rev War.
John was from New Jersey. So glad to find
someone from Absalom most Haworths seem to
come from George's son James. Did you go to
the reunion in Kansas City? It was great. They
are planning another for 2004, site undecided.
Janice

First of all thank you Fiona for the info. I believe that prior information I had was erroneous or misunderstood or memory failed me. My mom had told me as a very young girl that she had many sisters and a brother. I have searched the LDS site for her siblings and come up with nothing, so I would like someones help to do a look up for me please. I was told by my mom that she had a sister Bessie(Elizabeth)?, Mary, Annie, Eva, and her sisters who immigrated with her to Canada Jenny, Maggie(Margaret), Alice, and my mom Verena. There was also a brother Alfred.
I am beginning to believe that Alfred was the brother to my grandfather Adam Haworth , and that the other supposed sisters, Bessie, Mary, Annie and Eva belonged to another John Haworth who may have been a cousin. The John Haworth of whom I am speaking appears on the 1881 British census as follows...John Haworth b: abt. 1833 Worsley, Lanc.,Eng. wife Alice ? Haworth b: abt. 1840 Farnsworth Lanc. Eng. Dwelling: Coperative Terrace Altofs, York, Eng.
Household: Emma Haworth age 18, Mary C. Haworth age 10, Annie Haworth age 4, and Eva Haworth age 1. John was a coalminer and John Haworth my greatgrandfather the father of Adam Haworth was a Cotton Warper but I feel the two of them are related somehow as all the names fit in my moms family. Can someone help me unravel this mystery? I would like to have the earlier census for this John Haworth and possibly the census forward. It would be greatly appreciated.

Since my last posting I have found my grandfather Adam Haworth on the 1881 census of York,Lancashire with his parents John Haworth, and Elizabeth and a brother James and two sisters, Mary and Sarah. As I live in Canada and do not have access to the British census for earlier dates would it be possible for someone to do a look-up for this family it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
Hello everyone I am trying to trace my Haworth family from Lancashire. My grandfather Adam Haworth and wife Margaret Bridge immigrated from England to Canada in 1929 with four daughters, Jennie, Maggie(Margaret), and a set of twins Verena and Alice. They left behind another daughter Eva and a daughter Annie. There was a son I believe by the name of Alfred who was in the royal navy and was killed during the first world war. Names that I remember my mom (Verena) mentioning were cousins Joan, Geoffery, George, Edna all children of Annie and another cousin Fred and Minnie Greenhalgh. Place names that I remember my mom mentioning were Tottington, Bury and Ramsbottom. If anyone knows of this family I would be more than grateful to hear from you.
Thank you.
Audrey

I have a John Haworth born 1849 son of James 1791 and Susan 1793. Find him in Calderwood Family Tree. If same one then his brother George has living descendants in Smaith family tree. If it is your John can you let me know so I can add his wife and kids to my tree.
See Calderwood family tree quite a few Haworths from tott, don't know if it links but this is unusual spelling as most others are Howarth. Also there are earlier posts on this board with the Nuttal link. Ramsbottom has a geneaology/local history club find them on web they may help. kathiecalderwood@msn.com

They had Richard in 1917 and Clive ( my father) in 1918. Robert and Clive are now deceased in 2005 and 1998. They had 9 grandchildren altogether. ( three from each son)
We are in close contact with Kenneth's brother, Howard Stoker's family. He came to Vancouver BC , and had 5 children. They have all multiplied many times over!

Yes, we must never discount a possible ancestor just because the spelling is not what we think it should be! I can think of about 9 variations on HAWORTH off hand that I have seen on my travels.

On eway to find more information would be to see if there was a Will left by Nicholas. This would most likely be held at the LRO at Preston.

A searchable online (unofficial) database can be found at http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lws.htm

HTH

Fiona (board admin)

Hi

The way to positively find out the parents is to buy the marriage certificate (which will give the father) and/or the birth certificate which will give mother and father.

The GRO indexes can be found (at a fee) on Ancestry or Findmypast (amongst others) or free at a library, Archive or LDS centre. There is an incomplete free website of the BMD indexes at FreeBMD

See the board information panel for links to these websites

HTH

Fiona

Hi

Family search does not cover the time period that you are after.

The extractions only go up to about 1875 and then of course they are only baptisms. Some churches have not allowed their registers to be extracted so if you can;t find it on IGI it doesn't mean that the child does not exist.

The place to look for these 20th Century births are the GRO Indexes for England and Wales. These can be found complete and online (if you do not have free access at your local library/archives/LDS centre) at Ancestry and Findmypast for a fee. I do not think that they are completely searcheable on these sites.

There are two free transcription projects LancsBMD http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ (for Lancashire only) and FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ covering the whole of England and Wales. These are completely searcheable. Unfortunately these are volunteer projects and are not yet complete although a massive amount of data has been transcribed. Updates are constantly ongoing.

LancsBMD does not yet have the Bury records for the correct time but on FReeBMD I found Alice and Verena HAWORTH being born in 1912 and Lily HAWORTH in 1913. There is a Grace HOWARTH in 1913 as well - all with a mother called BRIDGE The national indexes have mother's maiden name included from 1912, the LancsBMD project will have it from 1837 when finished.

HTH

Fiona

John Haworth b 1695 of Barley Lancashire, UK son of Nicholas

I have an ancestor John b 1695 who married Mary Walker of Worston in 1722. HIs father was NIcholas. THey lived at Stang Top farm BArley.
My surname is Heyworth and I reached a brick wall searching for John Heyworth. From the parish records( St Marys Newchurch in Pendle )it appears that my relatives were described prior to the 180o's as Haworth and or Heworth. I am now searching for Haworths as opposed to Heyworths. At a time when many could not read or write the spelling of a surname was left to determination by the parish clerk. Has any one any information about the above that would assist me in discovering more about NIcholas?

Lynn,
I am just starting this journey into the Haworth family tree. Absolom is my 3rd great grandfather, his great-granddaughter Mary Ann Haworth is my great-grandmother her son, LeRoy Haworth Spencer is my grandfather. Where did you get all of that wonderfully detailed information. The question you asked about when they moved may help me futher my search on the Spencer line, as I have run into a wall with Mary Anns husband Stephen S. Spencer.I am so happy to have all this information. Thank you so much.
Sheila
