Hawthorn of County Down, Ireland

Hans Hawthorn, son of John Hawthorn and Agnes Kane, m. Sarah Ward in 1826 in Killinchy, Down, Ireland. Hans had the following brothers: Peter, Archibald, Patrick, and John. Adam and Joseph were probably his cousins. Hans had Hans II, Samuel, Thomas, Sarah, Agnes and Margaret. Archibald married and stayed in Scotland and so did John. Hans and Patrick (who married Selena Downey in Ireland) emigrated to Canada. All of the brothers ended up in Barony, Lanark, Scotland for a time. Adam, who was their cousin, also lived in Barony. I have more on the families if anyone thinks they're related.

William E. Hawthorn, PA > IA;, Prudence Elliott Hawthorn

WILLIAM E. HAWTHORN, Justice of the Peace, Riverside, Iowa, was born in Mercer County, Pa., and is the son of John R. and Margaret (Espy) Hawthorn. On both sides the ancestors were natives of the North of Ireland, emigrating to America prior to the Revolution. Both maternal and paternal grandfathers, William Espy and Samuel Hawthorn, settled in Pennsylvania. Both reared families in that State, and the grandparents on both sides lived and died in that State.

John R. Hawthorne, father of our subject, was a soldier of the War of 1812, a member of a volunteer rifle company. He was by trade a mechanic, but his life was mainly spent upon a farm. After his marriage to Margaret Espy three children were born: Our subject, Anne E., who wedded D. C. Smelser, a native of Kentucky, and who was one of the first settlers in this county, locating here in 1843, and was married in 1845. Samuel Wallace, a bachelor who was well known in this county in an early day. He left for California in 1850, and after three years of a prosperous life came back to this county. In 1859 he again started for that State, and has never been heard of since.

After the death of Margaret Hawthorn, John R. wedded Rachel Cairnes, who bore no heirs. They came to this county in the summer of 1840, and located on Davis Creek, section 31. His land warrant located a quarter section, and he entered about 300 acres ajoining [adjoining]. There were perhaps twelve settlers in Iowa Township at that time, R. B. Davis, the original settler on Davis Creek, being their nearest neighbor. John R. Hawthorn erected a cabin, and began improving the farm upon which he afterward lived and died. He was in his eighty-fifth year when his death occurred in 1872. His wife died in 1881. Our subject was twenty-one years of age when his father located in this county. He made a claim of a quarter section, a part of which he still owns. The first frame building erected in this township was built by him upon this tract, is yet his property and is now occupied, and is one of the oldest landmarks in the county.

In 1845, William E. Hawthorn was married to Prudence, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Elliott, of this county, who removed from Coshocton County, Ohio, to Hancock County, and then to Jefferson County, Iowa, and to this county in the spring of 1845. Mrs. Hawthorn was born in Cocshocton County, Ohio, in 1827. Her father was born in the North of Ireland, although of Scotch ancestry. He wedded Sarah Weaver, a native of Pennsylvania. She died in October, 1886, aged eighty-three years. She was the mother of Purdence, Martha J. and George S. (deceased, Henry L., Thomas L., Robert W., Dorcas, Florinda and Benjamin F. The family are now scattered, but several are well known in this county. Robert W. and Thomas L. were both members of the 6th Iowa, enlisting in 1861, both passing through the entire war. Robert was severely wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, but recovered. He married May McMurray, now deceased, of this county, and resides in Sedgwick County, Kan. Thomas L. was discharged on account of disability, but after his recovery enlisted in the 9th Iowa Cavalry and served until the close of the war. After his return he wedded Jane Coyner, and also resides in Sedgwick County, Kan., where he is acting as Justice of the Peace.

Our subject preferred farm life to any other, and until 1875 was engaged in that business. He was prosperous, and retired to private life with a competency for old age. His only move after marriage was from the farm to the village of Riverside, in 1875, where he yet resides. Six children were born upon the farm: Margaret S. is the wife of Caleb Sweet, a farmer of Johnson County, Iowa; Sarah J., the wife of D. S. Shifflett, D.D., a United Brethren minister of Nebraska, but a native of Virginia; Thomas L. is the husband of Emma Johns, and they are residents of Sedgewick County, Kan., where he owns a farm; John R. wedded Nina B. Fuller, and they are residents of Butler County, Kan.; Ermina D. is the wife of Charles Morgan, a farmer Webster County, Neb.; Wilson Grant is the husband of Alice Coberly, a resident of Riverside, and manages his father's farm. All the children are well settled in life and the aged parents have never been called upon to mourn a death in their home circle. They have nine grandchildren.

Mr. Hawthorn enlisted in Co. K, 13th Iowa Vol. Inf., and was a member of the famous Crocker Brigade. At the battle of Shiloh, while in the act of loading his gun, a rebel bullet pierced his right hand, producing a wound that has practically disabled him for life. He was sent home on a furlough, but afterward was discharged. During territorial days, he was a Constable in this county and was elected Justice of the Peace in 1848. In 1850 he went to California, and after his return was elected, in 1855, to the same position, which was almost continuous until his enlistment in the army.

Notwithstanding his determination to live a retired life, Mr. Hawthorne was pressed to accept the nomination for Justice of the Peace after coming to Riverside, and is now serving his fourth term as Justice. His last election was almost unanimous, although he is now and has ever been a Democrat. What greater honor can come to a man than the fact of his having lived an honorable and upright life, reared a family of children who have given evidence of careful training, and who at a ripe old age still retains the utmost confidence of the public. Squire Hawthorn and wife are among the oldest couples, and he is one of the oldest living settlers of Iowa Township

Portrait and Biographical History of Washingon, Iowa
1887
pages 565-566
The 1860 census shows Sarah married to Solomon Starling with several children also shows Catherine but not William . In 1853 Solomon Starling Sr and Thomas ? Jones were Guardians or agent for Sarah Hawthorn. I think william was her father but am not sure her mother was Catherine. I haven,t been able to find any info prior to 1850. I have info on Sarah would be willing to share

Earlier in the 1880 Census, Edward Ray was living with his family in Riley, Vigo, IN. I've checked back on the 1880 Census records and have found the family of:
*G. M. Hawthorn......1832....IN....(in Ripley, IN)
Sarah A. Hawthorn...1836....IN.....
Mary E. "Mattie" Hawthorn.....1860....In
Charles Hawthorn......1868....IN
Jennie Hawthorn......1879....IN
This would appear to be the family, as there isn't anyone in Vigo County, where Edward was living, to match the info. I was given on his wife. If you have anything you can share, please contact me asap. Thank You!
John D. and Sarah (Cousins) Hawthorn of Venango Co, PA

Need more information about John D. and Sarah (Cousins) Hawthorn and their family? They resided in Sugar Creek Twp for most of their married lives having many children. Have names of several but know that they had probably 10 or more including William C., Sarah who married Hugh Hasson, James, Julia, and Samuel who married Fanny J. Carter, John, Amanda…other names not known. John D. purchased the inheritance rights to several of the William Cousins heirs and apparently lived on the William Cousins farm.

Was he John Delany Hawthorn, son of John and Nancy (Gilmore) Hawthorn?

Was she as several family historians have suggested Sarah Cousins, daughter of William and Mary Ann Cousins of Sugar Creek Twp, Venango County, PA?

Both are buried at Wareham Cemetery, Irwin Twp, Venango County, PA. She was born 24 October 1802 and died 3 April 1870; and he was born 15 January 1795 and died 12 December 1872. Her tombstone mentions her maiden name of Cousins and that she was wife of John D.

John Hawthorn [KY, IL, MO]

Is anyone working on the Hawthorn line that moved from Green County, KY over to Cass County, IL and thence down to Missouri? I believe, but cannot yet prove, that this line traces back to South Carolina via the John Hawthorn (RW Vet] who died Graves County, KY in 1830s. My work has been on the line that descends from John and Catherine [Graves] Hawthorn to John Lawrence Hawthorn [1815-1875], both having moved from Green Co., KY to Cass Co., IL.in 1835-40. John Lawrence Hawthorn married there [Eveline Goldsby] and remained in IL until soon after Eveline died in 1864, whence he remarried to Elizabeth "Lizzy" [Norton] Binns, widow of CW casualty and dau of Andrew and Lucy [Coppedge] Norton [of Phelps Co., MO]. John and Lizzy and all the kids from their first marriages thence moved to Crawford Co., KS in 1867. Their final move was 1871 to Barton Co., MO, where he died in 1875. They produced 3 daughters and one son during this time, and I descend from daughter #2, Lula Mae Hawthorn. Will gladly coordinate work with others interested in this line.
Hawthorn/Romell

I am trying to find out who my Dad's Gr-Gr Grandmother was.
His Gr Gr Grandfather was James P. Hawthorn. James had 4 children - yep! On one Census I saw a James P. Hawthorn with 2 children 5 yrs and under. One of those children had to have been my Dad's Gr Grand-dad William Joseph. Who the other was, my theory is; the other child died and then the Mother died. I have no proof of this other than what I saw on the Census. (There was no wife's name was mentioned.)
Then in 1839 James P. Hawthorn married Winny Leadbetter in Cass Co., Illinois. Two children came from this union. But William Joseph was 4 yrs at the time of this marriage, so Winny could not have been his Mom. BUT, I found in the Marriage Index for IL, IN, KY, OH, TN 1720 - 19__ a James Hawthorn marrying a Jane Eliza Romell on Oct. 13, 1829 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. This was just 10 years prior to a James P Hawthorn's marriage to Winny Leadbetter in Illinois. I was wondering if anyone studying this line may have run into the "Romell" name. I am hitting brick walls. I have a hunch she is a missing link for this family line. I need to get back and find the Census showing James with 2 children and no wife. William Joseph was born in 1835 - that's a for sure. He and his wife Martha A. Steele are buried in King Hill Cem., St. Joseph, MO. St. Joseph is where my Dad was born (Milbert Henry Hawthorne). Any help would be appreciated. My e-mail is dlr276@aol.com. Thanks
Lynne Hawthorne Rodriguez

SC Samuel & Jannet HAWTHORN/HAWTHORNE 1700s

I have recently identified my HAWTHORN line and need help putting some dates and details on this family. Oldest ancestor is Samuel HAWTHORN, no birth date, death would have been before 4Aug1817 when his widow deeded a slave to her daughter. Wife is Jannet (MNU). I've identified two children so far:
Susannah, b. bet 1765-1784, d. bet. 1820-1830, m. Zachariah OWENS abt 1790
George, d. bet Jan 20, 1817 and Oct 13, 1820, Williamsburg District, SC, m. Jennet (MNU).

Samuel served with the SC militia during the Revolution so he was in SC by 1782. They did own some slaves, at least based on Jannet's deed to her daughter in 1817. Any help appreciated. I gladly share information.

Sharon
www.roadshometofl.com
Does anyone have any proven records on the father of William Hawthorn with spouse Meleachy Cliborn. I know
some people show John as his father back to the England clan. So far all I can find on this connection are individual gedcoms.

I have an obit for William which says he came from
Ireland and served in the Rev. War with his two sons. You should be able to order it from Georgia. My scanner is not working so I cannot scan it and attach it.

I know it is possible that the obit is incorrect -- but I need more than a gedcom for proof.
Thanks
Samuel Hawthorn - Jefferson Co. OH - parents from Ireland - Wm. &Hannah (Bigham)

The History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties - (Ohio)
author - Caldwell - 1880
page 548

Samuel J. Hawthorn - The subject of this sketch is amoung the oldest of the early settlers of this section, having come with his father to Jefferson county when only seven years old. His parents were natives of Ireland, and came to Pennsylvania in 1786, and settled on a farm near Taylorstown, in Washington County, the family consisting of eleven children. Four of them were born in Ireland, the remaining seven were born in Washington County, Pa. all that survive of this large family, are Mrs. Hannah Henderson, wife of Alexander Henderson of Harrisville, Ohio, and our subject, Samuel J. Hawthorn. William Hawthorn, the father of Samuel J. Hawthorn, came to Jefferson County in 1808, and purchased the farm now owned by Samuel, where he died in 1837, aged 85. His wife who was Hannah Bigham, died in 1842, aged 85. Mr Hawthorn, the subject of our article, was married to Hannah Hutchinson in 1833. She died in 1842. Four years after his first wife's death, he married Jane Armstrong. by his first wife, he had five children, but one of them now living; by his second wife he had seven children, three of whom are living. He had three sons in the late war, one of whom was taken prisioner, and died in Andersonville prison. One served the entire period of the war, the other served one year, at the close of the war. He enlisted in Indiana, and went out as first lieutenant. Mr. Hawthorn was born in 1797, and with the exception of four years, has resided on one farm since he came to Jefferson County, and still retains his mental faculties.

Hawthorne born approx. 1779 in Due West, Abbeville, SC to James and Mary Hawthorne? I am trying to make connections with my Joseph and his parents. Does anyone have info on a James Hawthorne , son of John and Elizabeth, born 1747 in Ulster, County Monaghan? He married a Mary Unknown and died in the US around 1826, possibly in GA I am grasping at straws here, as I seem to have hit a brick wall. Any help greatly appreciated.

James Hawthorn and Margaret McLachlan Paterson...widowed married in Down, Ireland. They had at least one son, Adam, who moved to Anderston, Lanark, Glasgow, Scotland and married Mary Louisa Elizabeth Church. Their children were:Annie, Samuel, John, James, William and Margaret. They were related to Hans, Patrick, Peter, John and Archibald Hawthorn, also from Down, Ireland who were brothers and working as marble cutters in Anderston. I'm trying to make the connection between the two families. Hans and his brothers parents were John and Marie Kean/Kane Hawthorn of Down, Ireland.

Hawthorn and Cunninghams photo, circa 1904 of Greenock/Walkerton, ON

A Cunningham descendent sent me a scanned photo of Samuel Hawthorn's children in a picture. I've now finally been able to have 12 of the 19 individuals identified along with the Cunningham's, but my inbox crashed several months ago, and I don't know who the Cunningham descendent was that sent me the photo. The Hawthorn's were all born in Greenock Twp and apparently the Cunninghams and Hawthorns went to Walkerton to have their photo taken at Trussters? The other 7 individuals were thought to have been friends of the family, but it appears that Louisa Ann Hawthorn has her arm on the lap of a gentleman behind her and he, his arm over her shoulder,
so this must have been her husband James Turner. It also appears that Myrtle Edna Hawthorn has her arm on the gentleman's lap behind her, who probably was her husband, Gordon Collins. The photo is circa 1904 or so.
Hawthorns of Greenock Twp, Ontario

I have a new Hawthorn mystery: William born 1831, Ontario, and wife, Jane, born 1841, Ontario. They had children: Mary, James, Agnes, and John before the 1871 census in Greenock Twp, Bruce County. The mystery is that if he were Hans's son, William would have been born in County Down, Ireland, not Ontario. For William to have been located in Greenock, I'm sure that he was related to the others who lived there. Hans moved to Greenock by 1851, but no William was listed as a son. William would have been 20 by then, and maybe listed on his own. Anyone have a clue?

Am searching for the Samuel Hawthorn family. My descendant was born in Belfast in 1841 then they migrated to US in 1842 first settling in Allegheny Co, Pa then some of then moving to Johnstown, PA after the civil war. Some went on to Newark, NJ and worked in the steel mills. Any relatives out there? Would love to gather your family info so we know what happened to this family. Thanks.
