Charles Henry Hawthorn b. 1827 m. Sarah Hall

Dear Cousins,

This is some new information to be added to the history of Lt. Col. Charles Henry Hawthorne and wife Sarah Hall of Scott County, Arkansas, and their son John Nesbitt Hawthorne (2nd) from whom I am descended.

Charles Hawthorne's father is John Nesbitt Hawthorn (1st) and was a merchant of New York City and of New Orleans. This John is not to be confused with Charles & Sarah's son John Nesbitt Hawthorne (2nd).

John Nesbitt Hawthorn (1st) was born between 1797-1804 (probably 1803) in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to Thomas Hawthorn (merchant) and his wife Mary Meredith (daughter of Jonathan Meredith and Elizabeth Tuckey).

At this time, I have no record of where Thomas and Mary Hawthorn are buried, though I believe it is possibly somewhere in Ireland. I have as yet found no evidence that either returned to America or Canada after 1813 (Mary’s sister Elizabeth Ogden, wife of Charles Ogden resided in Montreal, Quebec).

Thomas Hawthorn, was born near Newry, County Down, N. Ireland, and originally they would have been of either Scot’s or English descent, and protestant. Thomas had at least two brothers James Hawthorn d. 1793 and Archibald Hawthorn. He had relatives in the merchant trade in Belfast and Dublin, one being a William Hawthorn of the company of "Hawthorn and Lang" . He was kin to John Maxwell Nesbitt of Philadelphia (called nephew). Much information is in the history books relating to John Maxwell Nesbitt’s contributions to the American Revolution. Mary Meredith was born in Philadelphia, and her parents Jonathan Meredith and Elizabeth Tuckey were originally from England. Elizabeth Tuckey's father was William Tuckey, choir master of Christ Church, Philadelphia and made significant contributions to music in America).

John Nesbitt Hawthorn (1st) had several brothers and at least one sister. John’s known siblings were, Archibald Charles Hawthorn, M.D. (doctor in the British navy, died at sea), Ann Lang Hawthorn (French) of New Ross, Ireland, Hugh Hawthorn (died in New Orleans), William Meredith Hawthorn, M.D. (m. a daughter of Wright Post, M.D.), Robert Harwood Hawthorn, merchant (m. a daughter of Wright Post, M.D.).

John Nesbitt Hawthorn (1st) left Philadelphia with his parents and siblings about 1808 and went to Baltimore Maryland and about 1813, he and his parents and siblings returned to Ireland. John Nesbitt Hawthorn returned to America before 1821.

From 1821 until 1829, John N. Hawthorn (1st) was a merchant and broker in New York City in the financial district very near to where Trump Towers is located today. Based on the probability that Emma was born first (1850 Huntington, New York Census) it would appear that John and his wife (no name for her as yet) were married between 1823 and 1825, probably in New York City or Long Island. Which means Charles Henry Hawthorne was born where he said, on Long Island in New York and the family was definitely in New York in 1827. It is very unlikely that Mrs. John N. Hawthorne was a Choctaw as sometimes speculated. According to her daughter Emma Hawthorn Jones (Mrs. Edward Mitchell Jones) she was of French ancestry.

John Nesbitt Hawthorn (1st) and two of his brothers resided in Huntington, Suffolk County Long Island New York. And John is buried in Huntington per his obituary having died in 1868 in New York City.

John N. Hawthorn was a merchant and attorney of New Orleans Louisiana, from about 1829 to 1860, when the Civil War broke out, he and his brother Robert and Robert’s family escaped through the blockade and returned to New York (see Huntington, Suffolk, New York 1860 census). John N. Hawthorn (1st) continued to commute to New York City to work until his death in 1868.

John N. Hawthorn was a prominent merchant and attorney of New Orleans, holding many political offices including having served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from at least 1852-1854. His business partner for most of his years in New Orleans was another New Yorker, James Lawrence Bogert (sometimes spelled Bogart in records but is Bogert). Robert Harwood Hawthorn and family also resided in New Orleans for many years. John was for the union and would have been very much adverse to Charles Henry Hawthorne’s southern sympathies.

Since Charles and Emma did not appear in John’s household in 1840 or 1850 New Orleans it is my conjecture that after the death of their mother, John sent them to live with his brother William Hawthorn in Long Island, and were they both would have continued their educations until Emma married about 1858 and went to live at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island with here husband who was Captain of several ships on the Malaga route, including the “Brig. Mary E. Jones” (Emma is listed as Mary E. Jones on one census) which I assume was named after his wife “Mary Emma (Hawthorn) Jones”.

Charles probably attended school, possibly a university though I have found no such record as of this date or he may have been apprenticed to an attorney to read law (perhaps his uncle Judge Jonathan Meredith Jr. of Baltimore), until he eventually left New York for Missouri. Jonathan Meredith’s granddaughter was the first wife of James Roosevelt, and was the mother of James Roosevelt, ½ brother of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

There is much more to be found, and I hope to hear from all my numerous Hawthorn relatives regarding what they can add to this brief history.

Happy hunting,
Rita Brown

My g-grandmother was listed as Linda Posey.(Oct-1861) Nothing on her parents.
Siblings listed for Jince "Wynce" Hawthorne are: Sue, William, Martha, Andrew, John Alexander, Joseph I.
Siblings listed for my grandfather Richard D. Hawthorne are: James W. 1884, Robert J. 1888, Saarah J 1889, Jessie H. D. 1896, Frances E 1897, Minnie L 1900.
Please, if you have any info on any of these I would love to know it.. please e-mail me at gemini76@hotmail.com. or you can reply on here.

I am always interested in chatting with Hawthorne researchers who is working on the line in Ireland. I know that my Hawthorne line originated with James Hawthorn who married Ann Christy Ellis in Belfast around 1750. (I have hard copy of their wedding info-but don't have the time now to dig it out.) James and Ann migrated to the US in 1756 and traveled with their two children as well as two of James's brothers whose names were Thomas and David.

Would like very much to gain info regarding my line of Hawthoirnes in Ireland but have never been able to go back any further. I would probably be better, if you have a reply, to use my direct address Fred.Hawthorne@Comcast.Net as I believe the address on file here is out of date.

Sorry Karen, all the names in my dBase are in my line either directly or indirectly. If there is a connection to the other two Hawthorne lines that were in Abbeville County, SC, in the mid to late 1700 and early 1800's it would have been in Ireland or England prior to their migration. I have no connection to the clan that moved to OH.

I have done research on my Hawthorne family (from SC) for many years and have a dBase that includes most of the family members. There were three Hawthorne families living in Abbeville County, SC in the early 1800's, however, two of these families moved on. One went to Preble County, OH and the other to GA & AL.

The group that went to OH were ARP church members and felt strongly against slavery while the other to left to search for better/richer soil to farm.

I have checked my files for your Nancy and was unable to find she or Thomas Tuggle. In fact I have no listing at all for a single Tuggle in a dBase that includes some 13,000 names. My guess is that your Nancy settled in Preble, OH and I would direct my search there.

I have checked my files for your Nancy and was unable to find she or Thomas Tuggle.
My stonewall is James Hawthorne (Hathorn) who married Ann Christy Ellis in the Consistory Lycence of St. Mary, Dublin, Irelandon Jan 17, 1752. I know that this James had at least two brothers whose names were Thomas & David. James took his family (wife and two children Jimmy & Margaret) along with his two brothers on a ship (unknown name) to Charles Towne, South Carolina in the 1760's. If anyone can connect to the people I will be able to provide almost all of their descendants.

John, I'm sorry but I have nothing on your William, however, I would like to correspond with anyone doing research on the Hawthorne (Hathorn-Hawthorn) lines in Dublin. My ancestor was James Hathorn who married Ann Christy Ellis on 17 Jan. 1752 at Consistory Lycence of St. Mary, Dublin, Ireland. James, his family, and two of his brothers migrated to Charles Towne, SC in the 1760's. I hope to find someone in Ireland that is researching this line. My E-Mail address is Fred.Hawthorne@Comcast.Net

Hi
According to the Cyclopedia of NZ Alfred Francis Hawthorne was the son of
M.C.Hawthorne a Tailor of Woolwich. This Cyclopedia shows a photo of the
man.

My wife's Great Great Great Grandfather was Michael Hawthorne tailor born
Ireland according to the 1841 and 1851 Census and married to an Elizabeth?
They had the following children
Robert born c1836
Charles born c 1839
Michael born c 1840
Eliza born c 1842
Henry born 1846
Thomas P born c 1847
These children were born in London. Michael eventually moved to Woolwich and
secured a government contract according to the Cyclopedia of NZ.
I see both Barbara and Deb have queries about Michael Hawthorne so perhaps
we can swap data.

Alan Long a South Londoner in New Zealand
Who is Henry Hawthorne, ca 1700, Galloway, Scotland?

Ancestry.com lists a Patrick Heron, son of Andro Heron of Bargaly who deserts the apprenticeship service of Henry Hawthorne. (From Scottish Registry of Apprentices, 1701-1755). I assume that the Heron family is Andrew Heron of Bargaly (1665-1740) m. to Marie Grahame of Floristown (1665-1705) with a son Patrick (1690-1752). This would make Patrick about 12 at the time of his desertion.

Looking for information on my wife's ancestors the Hawthorne's, the family branch originated from Co. Down/Co. Antrim, Ireland. Her Great Grandfather William Hawthorne (b1841) and his wife Elizabeth A ? (b1848) had 12 children, 2 girls and 10 boys. Eight of the boys served in the First World War. Thomas and Albert paid the ultimate sacrifice, George survived Gallipoli, was captured and managed to escape and went on to see out the war, but when he came back to Ireland, he ended up getting knocked down and killed on a push bike on the Lisburn road.
Such a large family and with many stories to tell. If any one can help us join together the fragments it would be great.

John & Val.

Hi

I am descended from Robert on your list. I have quite a lot of info about his line but am stopped at his father Michael the tailor from Ireland. Would be very interested in swopping information with others researching this line.

Colin Place
