HAGOOD/HAYGOOD in Montgomery Co. IL

Dear Hagood/Haygood descendants:

Historic McCord Cemetery Needs You

A cemetery exists because lives are worth remembering. It pays homage to the lives that have gone before us and honors our veterans. Sadly, the nearly 175-year-old McCord Cemetery in Irving Township of Montgomery County, Illinois has declined over the years (photos are available upon request). Weedy vegetation has climbed over toppled gravestones and brambles have intertwined with historic markers, including those of veterans from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Civil War. Many of the first settlers of the nearby community are interred here but the exact number may be lost to the ages. The sexton records and other records of the old McCord Cemetery Association cannot be found.

Families buried in McCord include: ALTEVOGHT, BOSTICK, CHAMBERS, COCKLERES, CLOTFELTER, DRYER, HAGOOD, HALLER, HANKS, HAYGOOD, HEIDERMAN, HOGSETT, HUGHES, JACKSON, KERR, KNIGHT, LINXWILER, LOHR, MCCORD, PADEN, PARRY, RICHARDSON, RUTLEDGE, SHORT, SMITH, SLAYBACK, SWING, TOMAMICHEL, WILLIAMS

McCord Cemetery needs your help now before it's too late. Perhaps you can come out for a cleanup day, or help map the cemetery or photograph cemetery markers. Are your skills and talents better suited for behind-the-scenes research? Perhaps you have access to local newspaper archives and can search for obituaries and death notices that mention burial in the cemetery. Or perhaps you have access to funeral notices, death registers, bible records, etc. that can be used in compiling a list of interments for those missing cemetery markers or unmarked graves. Please contact Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com to volunteer. For those of you who are local, there is an organizational meeting planned for November 7 in Irving if you're able to attend.

How else can you help? Share this announcement with your fellow researchers. Post it on appropriate blogs and forums. And if you have family members buried at McCord or have photos of cemetery markers, contact Jeanne Johnson at jj@tampabay.rr.com

The Cemetery committee "Restore McCord" welcomes monetary donations. Much of the work will be provided freely by volunteers, but equipment, supplies, and some specialized services (such as restoring markers and searching for buried stones and interments) may need to be purchased. We could use someone experienced in historic grant applications also. Our recently-formed group will coordinate the much needed preservation, restoration, and maintenance efforts to McCord under the auspices of the award-winning Irving Area Historical Museum http://www.irvingmuseum.org/ The Museum, established in 1999, is a volunteer not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving local history. Its members' dedicated efforts have been formally recognized by the 2002 Governor's Home Town Award and two Studs Terkel Humanities Service Awards. The Museum has set up a separate checking account for donations. If you'd like to help with the finances of this endeavor, please contact the museum at irvingmuseum@consolidated.net

We hope that you'll join us in the effort to protect this cemetery from extinction. Interment and inscription information from this effort will be distributed freely and we want to ensure continued maintenance of the cemetery grounds after restoration. Your help towards these worthwhile goals would be greatly appreciated. J. Johnson

FAQ
Where exactly is the McCord Cemetery located?
The cemetery is located in Irving Township of Montgomery County between Hillsboro & Irving communities on McCord's Trail. Other nearby communities are Taylor Springs, Butler, and Schram City.
Coordinates of the McCord Cemetery are: Latitude 39.1892139 Longitude -89.444809

What size is the McCord Cemetery?
It is approximately two acres.

Who do I contact to volunteer or for more information?
Joyce Williams aurien1@aol.com
I am doing a friend a favor by doing his four generations. I have most of it filled out, except his maternal grandmother Mattie Mae Potter and her parents! Are you related to a Bohannon residing in Massachusetts?

I would be grateful if you could share with me any information you may have concerning Mattie and her parents.
All I have is the following (and I’m not sure if it is correct!):
Mattie Mae Potter
Born: 17 May 1883, Georgia
Married: Fred Haygood, 08 OCT 1899 , Bibb, Georgia

Mother: Lizzie Childers, born abt 1860, Georgia
Father: Potter, born in Georgia

As you can see, my information is scarce; anything you could offer would be helpful!
Thanks in advance!

My father is George Rayray Haygood. He said that his grandfather was a co-founder of the Luzon Stevedoring Company. He claims that his ancestors came from the state of Kentucky. I once tried contacting someone with the surname Haygood, but seems to me like no one wants to reply. They come to visit my website, and that's it.

I'm not sure I can help. The book doesn't mention a Willie Haygood in that time period. There are many named James and many named George without the middle names, so I really can't identify them as your family. The book is really complicated.
There was a Haygood in Amite County in the 1840 census with the middle initial M. The first initial was not clear, but could have been a W.
He had 6 sons listed - 1 between 5 and 10 - 2 between 10 and 15 - 3 between 15 and 20.
The 1850 census of Amite Co. MS lists a William I. born in 1836 in Amite County.

I am trying to find the birthplace of a James Jackson Haygood (1830-1888). He is buried in Lauderdale, AL. His father was Willes(is) Haygood, who died in 1841 in Lauderdale, AL. He was married to an Elizabeth ?) All records show that James Jackson was born in Amite CO. MS.but can't find where Willis ever lived in Amite. Willis descended from George Miscal Haygood of Pendelton, SC, born about 1765 and died in 1834.James Jackson was married to Lydia Richardson. I thought the Haigwood book might have something on this. Thank you.

Re: Asa Haygood and Family in Georgia

Oh, Edie...that would be WONDERFUL! I have been stuck on this couple (Henry SHELTON b.ca.1791-1794 NC and Matilda HAGOOD b.ca.1810-1817) since the 1970's. I really had not been able to find out anything about this Asa, even though I had noticed that he was in the right place at the right time to be Matilda's father. Because of the big age difference before Matilda and Henry, you will notice that Henry and Asa are about the same age. You mention the War of 1812 records. Does it tell you where Asa lived when he served in that war? I have some War of 1812 records for a Henry SHELTON, but don't know if he is our Henry or not. If this turns out to be Matilda's family, I see that she would be a product of Asa's 1st marriage. Any family info that you have would be greatly appreciated.
Dolores Shelton Davis

Since my posting I have found out a little more about my 2nd. great grandfather Asa Haguewood. He was born between 1778 and 1789. His marriage to Sarah Barnes was his third marriage. He was first married in Franklin County, GA to Elizabeth Higgins in 1814. Second, he married Abby Sanders in Habersham County, GA in 1826. His marriage to Sarah Barnes was in Habersham County in 18737. He died July 4, 1878 in Fannin County, GA. Asa was a veteran of the War of 1812, I received a copy of his military record. I will try to do a little research and see if I can find a tie in to your Shelton line.
Edie

Edie,
I find an older Asa HAGOOD/HAYGOOD in Habersham Co., GA in the 1840 Census for Blue Creek District. I have a Matilda HAGOOD/HAYGOOD who married my Henry SHELTON. There is a Henry SHELTON in the 1840 Habersham Co., GA, as well, but I have never been sure if he is MY Henry because the ages are all wrong. Anyway, then my Henry SHELTON was in Lumpkin Co., GA in 1850, 1860, & 1870. He died in 1879. Some of his descendants moved to Fannin Co., GA. My grandfather, Charles Washington SHELTON was said to have been born there. His father was James Milton SHELTON. Part of the family thinks that Matilda's maiden name was BRUCE, but I can not prove the maiden name either way. I find it interesting that your Asa HAYGOOD was moving to the same places as my SHELTON descendants. The older Asa HAGOOD was between 50 & 60 years old in 1840. Do you think there might be a connection to your Asa?
Dolores Shelton Davis

Bishop Haygood of Paris, Texas in 1893

The February 1, 1893 murder of Henry Smith in Paris, Texas was the first blatantly public, actively promoted lynching of a southern black by a large crowd of southern whites. Smith, an insane ex-slave, allegedly killed Myrtle Vance, the three-year-old daughter of a brutal Texas policeman after the policeman had assaulted him. Although the child had not been sexually molested, a local clergyman, Bishop Haygood, fueled the growing hysteria with lurid tales of how the child had been "taken by her heels and torn asunder in the mad wantonness of gorilla ferocity." The suspect was captured in Arkansas. He confessed on the train back to Paris, Texas.
(more on website)

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "American Lynching." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.americanlynching.com/main.html

Hi. I just read your posting tonight. Are you sure James Edward was born in Catahoula Parish? I looked at the census for Catahoula and there are about 10 districts to look
through. I did Harrisonburg first as James was buried there but no luck. Will try some others. Am looking for any Haygoods in that area. Have you tried writing to the Parish Clerk in that county for a marriage document? Sometimes the parents names are on them. I have a new e-mail.
abauman@salsgiver.com.

Ann

I'm not sure if my family links to your information, but I thought that there were too many similarities to ignore:

I don't have info on William Haygood, but my great grandmother, Izella Elizabeth Mack from Ybor City (Hillsborough Co.) married Monticello Haygood from Quincy (Gadsden Co.). His parents are Lee Haygood of Apalachicola and Georgianna Carter of Quincy. Izella Mack's mother, Jannie of Gainesville (don't know maiden name) married Frank Mathis, then married Saul Mack of Apalachicola.

If any of these names sound familiar to you, or if you have info that may fill in my blanks, I would look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
