Silas Andrew born 22 Jan. 1868 in Van Alstyne, Grayson Co. Tx.He was only 5 years old when his father, Andrew Jackson Hayhurst died. He was 12 years old when his mother Bernetta Belle(Middlebrook)Hayhurst Miller died in Jan. 1880. In the 1880 census he is with the Burgess family listed as adopted son. But have found no legal adoption papers in court records in Grayson co. In the next census 1900,1910,1920 and 1930 he goes by Silas A.Hayhurst. His death Certificate states his name as Silas Andy Hayhurst, died 30 Jan.1937 Swisher Co.Tx.

His full name probably was Samuel Monroe Hayhurst and changed to Monroe S. Hyayust as the year is a perfect fit for him now you need to get his death certificate from Orangeville,Columbia County,Pennsylvania....and birth month date could be wrong...

have just found in the Catawissa Quaker records that Mary Hayhurst married my gggggrandfather William Collins Ellis in Oct or Nov 1820. Does anyone know who Mary's parents are or the exact date of marriage? Mary (Hayhurst) Ellis died Aug 10, 1860 at age 65.

Bezaleel was born in Bucks County and I believe Susanna was also. I do not know when the family removed to Catawissa in Columbia County. My line is Ezra and there is a great deal in the early history of Columbia County about his work there.
He died in 1844. The book "A Hayhurst Genealogy: Descendants of Cuthbert and Mary (Rudd) Hayhurst, Quakers of Bucks County, Pennsylvania 1682-1988 mistakenly omits Ezra and Parmelia's children and lists as their children's generation and lists their grandchildren instead.

My father was Ralph Ellis Hayhurst. I find in my branch of the family they were usually named for some one in the family. You may have answered my question about my father's middle name. His parents were born and raised in Catawissa.

George Randall b.Feb. 17, 1829 and died Mar. 16, 1864, m. Priscilla Bieber born Dec. 14, 1831 and died Jan 29, 1867. They were the parents of the children listed to Ezra and Parmelia. George was the physician who served in the Civil War.
Lewis b. 1837. He also served in the Civil War, George and Lewis were in the militia and fought at Antietam. I believe Lewis married and his wife's name was Elizabeth. I do not know if they had children.
Mary C. b. 1843. (I know nothing about her except her birth year)
Rachael Ann b. Dec. 15, 1840. died May 12, 1901 in Shelton Buffalo, Ne. I believe she married Jacob Harmon of Columbia County, PA.
Ezra died in 1844.

Louis Clark Hayhurst and Rachel (Griffin) Hayhrust.
Rachel was born 11/15/1844 and Louis was born was born January 11,1845 both in Indiana.
Rachels parents George Griffin and don't know wifes name, died in Indiana,
I think in Vanderburg County.
But Rachel and Louis had 7 children, two of which moved to Indiana,
James Frank of Evansville and John Raleigh.

Ezra who was born around 1804 was born in Catawissa the son of Bezaleel brother of William.
Since Ezra died in 1844 he could not be the father of the children listed in the Hayhurst genealogy.
It was his son George who was the medical doctor and the father of the children listed on page 59 of the book. It is George and Pricilla Bieber's oldest son Ezra that I am seeking information about. George and his brother Lewis both sons of Ezra and Parmelia served in B Co. 13th Inf.Reg. PA from Sept. 12, 1862 to Sept. 26, 1862.
This regiment apparently was formed specifically for the battle of Antietum (sp?) against Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson which was fought in Maryland during this period. George died 3/26/1864 ,Pricilla died 7/18/1863 leaving Parmelia to raise their children. Children of Ezra and Parmelia were George, Lewis, Mary and Rachel Ann.

The Ezra born about 1804 was very prominent in the early history of Columbia County.
He apparently was a surveyor but he also taught school, served on the school board, the fire department and is mentioned in other areas of early Catawissa. Louise

The first letter was written on May 9,1934 by the grandson of Ezra the surveyor. His parents died when he was ten years of age & he was taken by his grandmother to live with her.
"There was also Aunt Mary & Uncle Lewis".
“My grandfateher was a surveyor, he also wrote poetry, the old Berwick Gazette published several of his poems, he was also a member of the state Legislature. His brother was Joseph a wheelright & an inventor."
I guess his father was George as he says his father was a doctor.
The person he is writing to has a brother Ross who moved to California.
Would welcome contact with you, there is more, another letter written in 1967.
I am trying to connect the family to either Henderson or Lambert post 1900, I think!

Yes, Jane was born in Taney County, Missouri on 15 OCT 1837. Her family lived near Rockbridge. After she was born, the county was divided up, and the portion the family lived in became Ozark County.

Thank so much for your reply and information, i have not been doing this searching for long and find myself in a hole when i can get so many of same names but completely wrong family. If i can get a solid direction to go it makes things a little easier, with Joseph and Ellen, i have confirmation of a birth cert from a son, (john) but had no other info if other children. I had a little ground work from my cousin in UK and that has helped heaps,(i am in Aust) there are so many names i hope to find and get dates to but perserverance seems to be the only way to go. I believe Clarissa is the daughter of Andrew and Margaret Jennings Collins.
John and Clarissa traveled with Andrew Collins,
first to Henry Co., Indiana, then to Arkansas
(where both John and Andrew died... check Carroll Co., AR for John's death)
I believe Samuel was born in Indiana shortly before the families head for Arkansas.

hello, my name is Doreen Watling, I live near Hull, East Yorkshire, England. Amongst some family papers I found an American newspaper clipping refering to a Harold Hayhurst an Englishman know as a "declarant" because he was applying for American Citizenship. He was 23 and employed by H E Rawlings near Woodson. He was leaving for War from Jacksonville, it also states he has 2 brothers serving in the British Army, both of wich had been injured, this must have been sent to my family in Hull, I believe that Harold could be my Grandfathers brother, Benjamin, if not a very close relative. I have sent for his Marriage Certificate which should give me his fathers name, if you have any information we could maybe cross reference, if this is so you could be my cousin once removed

An exact date has not been documented to determine when the John Hayhurst family emigrated '
into Carroll County, Arkansas.
However, it is known that the family was here prior to the Civil War and that War had a dramatic
impact upon them. Without question, the American Civil War was completely different from any
other confrontation that the American people have been involved in because it was indeed a
War that pitted brother against brother. Each man was forced by his own conscience to decide
exactly where his sympathies laid when the Union divided.
In the Hayhurst family three brothers, Joseph Warner, Andrew J. and Samuel, chose to
align themselves with the Confederacy, while Robert M. Hayhurst chose to follow his own
dictates into the Union Army.
March 20, 1863 became a day of infamy for this family. John H. Hayhurst was wounded on
that date, while Robert Hayhurst and his brother-in-law, Robert Duncan,were killed.
This family tragedy was acted out during a Civil War skirmish that took place near Berryville--the
actual site was where North Springfield Street and Cisco Road intersect today, on the site of
what some will remember as the Stella Davis home.
John Hayhurst did not fully recover from his wounds and he died during July of that year.

Only a year after Robert Hayhurst's second marriage the Civil War began.
That War was totally unlike any war America has ever been involved in.
The conflicts, and they were many, that led up to that bloody confrontation not only split the
fabric of the American Union, but in its own way touched every family in the nation and in
many instances it even split some of those families.
Robert Hayhurst decided that his loyalties lay with the Union and he joined the Union Army,
yet he had a brother who enlisted with the Confederacy.After the Hayhurst men left for military
service, the women and children moved to John Henderson Hayhurst's farm for their own protection.

Still, that move did not alleviate their suffering at the hands of the " Bushwhackers " who
roamed the area. During the second year of the War, Robert Hayhurst and his brother-in-law,
Robert Duncan,devised a plan to move the entire Hayhurst family across the state line into
Missouri for their safety.

They chose March 20, 1863, as the date they would implement their plan.
Since the Hayhurst family was well known in Carroll County as Union Sympathizers they were
watched carefully by their Confederate neighbors.
The day the family would attempt their escape was no exception to the rule.
Two Confederate soldiers who lived in Carroll County had the Hayhurst farm under surveillance.
Meanwhile, Robert Hayhurst and Robert Duncan had arranged furloughts for themselves
and they had sent word to the family they would arrive sometine during the day of March 20.

Hayhurst and Duncan assumed the house was being watched, so they approached it from
two different directions, one from the north and one from the south.
The two Union soldiers made their way along the creek toward the house very carefully and very
quietly. However, members of the family inside the house saw the two men and some family
members made the mistake of coming outside to meet them.
The Confederate soldiers seized the moment and opened fire with their weapons.
Robert Hayhurst and Robert Duncan were both killed as their wives watched in horror.
John Henderson Hayhurst was seriously wounded.
The women were then left with the task of burying the two dead men, and then they took
John Hayhurst to the home of his brother-in-law at Berryville.He died there during July 1863.

Word of the death of Robert Hayhurst and Robert Duncan reached their brothers,William
and David, who were members of Company G, of the First Arkansas Cavalry, and were
stationed at Fayetteville at that time.
William returned to Carroll County to determine the identities of the two men who had killed
his brother and brother-in-law from ambush.
Once he knew who they were he knew where to find them, but as he approached the area the
men ran. He followed them and killed them both.

Samuel was born in Indiana December 1833.
Samuel died October 19, 1902 in Denton County,Texas, at 68 years of age.
His body was interred in Gribble Springs,Denton County,Texas, at Gribble Springs Cemetery..
According to his grandson Alex Hayhurst, Samuel was buried in the Gribble Springs Cemetery
in an unmarked grave. The Youngs and Hayhursts lived near the Gribble Springs area
Jane lived in Denton County until her husband died in 1902.
She then moved with her son and his family to Jack County to live near her brother
Samuel Young.
Jane Young and Samuel Kandera Jennings Hayhurst had the following children:

Jane died June 25, 1912 in Jack County, Texas, at 74 years of age.
Jane's funeral was handled by the Hess Funeral Home.
Her body was interred in Jack County,Texas, at Carroll Creek Cemetery.
The exact site of Jane's grave is unknown. According to her grandson, Alex Hayhurst,
she was buried next to her brother Samuel in Carroll Creek Cemetery, but the grave was
unmarked. But it is known that Samuel is interred in another cemetery, so there is
some doubt. It is known that Hayhurst children attended the Carroll Creek School.

In 1899 they lived in Cooke County, in 1901 and 1904 in Foard County, and in 1912 in Clay County, Texas. They moved to Lubbock County in 1919 and went into the cattle business.
After a disastrous blizzard in 1920 in which half of his cattle froze to death he became a farmer.
She died in Lubbock in 1928, and he died there in 1961.

The position held by Fred D. Coppock with relation to the construction of many of the most substantial buildings of Greenville, Ohio, has been of a character to leave its impress upon the city for many years to come, for he is a dealer in sand and gravel and has held contracts for furnishing these commodities to the leading builders of Darke county. As a result of years of successful business operations he is now a man of wealth, while his commercial standing is of a high rating.
He was born near Pleasant Hill, Miami county,Ohio, September 14, 1878, a son of Allen and Maria (Furnas) Cop pock, and grandson of Joseph and Amelia (Jay) Coppocfc and Joseph & Margaret (Spencer) Furnas........
Joseph Coppock and his wife were born in Pennsylvania, where they resided until after their marriage, but later migrated to Ohio and he operated a flour mill in the vicinity of Pleasant Hill. Both he and his wife died in their new home.
His birth year was the same as that which marked the outbreak of the war of 1812.
Joseph Coppock and wife had a large family, among the children being the following:

Allen and Maria (Furnas) Coppock were born in Miami County,Ohio, where their lives have been spent. He was a farmer until 1903, when he retired to Pleasant Hill which continues to be his home. He and his wife are members of the Society of Friends, coming of good, old Quaker stock.
During the Civil war Allen Coppock enlisted in the 100 days' service as a private, and after the expiration of his period of service, resumed his agricultural pursuits. Active in politics, he served as supervisor of his township, and member of the city council of Pleasant Hill, being a man of more than ordinary ability. He and his wife have had the following children:
Sallie, who is the wife of L. A. Kessler, a resident of the vicinity of Pleasant Hill, Ohio; Joe F., who resides at Mechanicsburg, Ohio; Maggie, who is the widow of W. O. Patty of Greenville, Ohio; Fred D., who resides at Greenville, Ohio; Jed, who resides at Philadelphia, Pa.; Ethel, who is the wife of Harry Brown of Greenville, Ohio; Allen, Jr., who resides at Weaver Station, Ohio.

Fred D. Coppock was reared in his native county attending the schools of his district and the high school of Columbus, Ohio, in which he took a three years' business course.
Until he was seventeen years old, he assisted his father, and then began working on his own account, making his own way through school, carrying newspapers and doing chores. While at school, he lived alone and did his own cooking, sparing himself in nothing, so anxious was he to minimize his expenses. , Having completed his studies, he returned to Pleasant Hill at the age of twenty, and was married, following which, for the first year, he and his wife resided with her father, he assisting in raising a tobacco crop.
He then purchased an interest in the Peerless Wall Plaster Company of Pleasant Hill, and lived in that city for one year. Selling his interest in that concern, Mr. Coppock was interested in a sawmill business for two years, and during that period bought a sand pit at Ludlow Falls, Ohio. For a year he operated this pit, but moving to Greenville in the fall of 1903, in partnership with his father- in-law, J. H. Miles, W. O. Patty and Joe F. Coppock, he began the shipping of sand and gravel at Fort Jefferson. In time he purchased the holdings of his father-in-law his brother-in-law died, and his brother sold his interest, so that Mr. Coppock and his sister, Mrs. Patty continue the busmess which has developed into one of the important industries of Greenville. When he started it at Greenville, Mr. Coppock had $1,500, but now the company is incorporated with a capital stock of $240,000.
He is interested in other enterprises, being vice-president of the U. S. Chemical Company of Greenville, and shows in every undertaking the same determined energy and untiring attention to detail that characterized him as a boy.
On May 11,1899, Mr. Coppock was married to Miss Maude E. Miles, a daughter of John H. and Susanna (Coppock) Miles. Mr. and Mrs. Coppock became the parents of four children: Miles who died at the age of nine months; Dorotha, Eugene and one who died at birth. They belong to the Society of Friends, attending meeting at Ludlow Falls, He belongs to Pleasant Lodge, F. & A. M.; Greenville Chapter No. 77, R. A. M., and Greenville Council, R. & S. M ......

I can only guess that Quentin was born around 1902... this was in the general vicinity of Orange County ... Wilkes-Barre area of PA, I believe. Quentin's oldest brother, John Howard Hayhurst, was the father of my aunt Joyce Hayhurst (married named Berrettini) and my dad, Wade Warner Hayhurst. My grandmother, wife of John Howard Hayhurst, was Beryl Henrie Hayhurst. They were all from that area of PA.

My father, Wade Warner Hayhurst (born 1929), of PA, was the son of John Howard Hayhurst. I understand John had two siblings, George Hayhurst and Quentin Hayhurst. My notes say Quentin married someone named Ivy...I do not have her last name. I was told that John, George, and Quentin were the children of John Hayhurst (senior, I guess!) and Emma Temple, with John a descendant of Monross Hayhurst who was a descendant of Cuthbert Hayhurst, all of PA.

My grandmother, Alex's wife, was named Winnie Dawdy and her father was Benton Blythe Dawdy and her mother was Margaret Dansby Dawdy. They had four children, John Benton, Opal, Charles, and Margaret. I didn't know the Collins family was from Scotland so thank you again for this reply!

Thanks for the information. You are right, John Hayhurst did pass away in Arkansas and not Virginia. I just recently learned that John, his son Robert, and Robert's brother- in -law were killed by bushwackers at their home in Arkansas during the Civil War. (From A History of Carroll County, Arkansas) This was posted on this website and I found it by typing in John Robert Hayhurst who was John Henderson Hayhurst's grandson and Samuel Hayhurst's son.

I have found the birth of an Ellen Dewhurst about 1783 in Ribchester who married a George Hayhurst on the 24TH January 1804 in Ribchester he was born about 1779 in Ribchester.Possibly your George and Ellen.
