John David Hayward -- Obituary

JOHN DAVID HAYWARD

Distinguished stained glass artist.

John Hayward, who died from a heart attack on May 19 [2007], aged 77, was a stained glass artist who designed and made nearly 200 windows which irradiate churches and Cathedrals throughout Britain and abroad. His eloquent use of symbolism, colour and paint involved a severe discipline which harnesses that eloquence to a particular meaning to all those who see his windows. From 1974 he devoted himself to glass but before that he also designed and made what he called 'other things' for church interiors.

John was born on July 16 1929 in Tooting. His father, David, was a printer whose hobby was bookbinding. His mother, Violet, had fair, wavy hair which John inherited. From his father came an innate and charming modesty. Betty, Mike and Bill completed the family. He was educated at Tooting Bec Grammar School and remembered an inspiring art teacher, Jack Leviin, who recognised and encouraged in him a talent for drawing and painting. Summers were spent in fidls and landscapes became an enduring fascination. As a student at St Martin's School of Art he was impressed by Seurat and Piero della Francesca who used the device of figures in a landscape as a language to express ideas. Another intriguing study was images of the Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna and iconography.

Although offered a place at The Royal College of Art, he decided to join Faithcraft designing church furniture and arranging whole interiors where glass was one important element. He was influenced by the architectural principles of Laurence Kind and Cachemaille-Day who were interested in the Liturgical Movement which was concerned with what churches were for, not what they should look like. They were for the performance of liturgy.

He married Ros, an artist, in 1952 and they had two daughters. In 1961 he carried out his ambition to go free-lance and set up a studio in Blechingley, close to the Southwark Ordination Centre. There was a great demand for artists in the post-war church-building boom and his first major commission was a scheme of wiindows for the ruined Wren church, St Mary-le-Bow. It was the beginning of 13 years when he worked on glass and 'other things'. His windows for Paternoster Royal in London (with Dick Whittington's cat) followed Bow. He made a whole wall of glass 'Images of Heaven' at Croydon. At Old Basing, The Angel of Peace window, he said 'almost designed itself'. There were numerous commissions for church furniture, altars, crosses and candlesticks. He painted a series of wall paintings and made an aluminium sculpture for St Michael and All Angels, Hackney - the church now Grade II listed because of his art. Perhaps the greatest example of his enthusiasm to create a whole interior as a work of art is Blackburn Cathedral where he designed a central altar and, above it, a steel corona lit from above by a glass lantern (which he made). He designed organ cases, Chapels, painted icons and made windows. On the West wall is another of his sculptures, a huge Christ the Worker.

After 1974 the demand for new church furniture declined but churches still wanted stained glass and he created a stream of windows, too many to list here. Each commission, whatever its size, was designed for its unique space, meticulously painted and stained.

In 1989 he moved to Dorset to retire mainly because his childhood holidays were enjoyed in Swanage. Almost immediately he was asked to design a window to replace the Victorian Great West Window at Sherborne Abbey - an appeal which he couldn't resist. The original window had lost much of its paint and was in poor condition. There was a heated debate between those who wanted the window to be restored and those who believed a new window would enhance the Abbey. The media picked up the story and followed its progress through a Consistory Court and the Court of Arches. Eventually the decision was for John's window, The Incarnation, to be made and it was installed ready for its dedication before the Queen in 1998. It is a brilliant statement of his personal beliefs, expressed symbolically, for the moment of the Incarnation.

In 2001 he made three millennium windows. One for Sherborne commemorating the Royal visit. Another window at Blackford which shows Christ as an unusually young and beardless Good Shepherd and a monumental Madonna and Child at Norwich Cathedral. In the same year he achieved a life-long ambition to visit Ravenna to wonder at the icons and mosaics which had inspired his work.

He was often in demand for lectures for which he is irreplaceable. Those who have heard him will remember his grasp of detail, his passion for his art and his wry humour which revealed a perception of the ironies of life and the absurdities of human beings, not least himself.

He finished his last window in April this year for St Peter, Limpsfield, Surrey. It depicts a seated St Cecilia in his characteristic blues, greens and golds and will be dedicated on the Saint's Day on 22 November.

There will be a Memorial Service at Sherborne Abbey later this year.

His daughter, Catherine, a jeweller, pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife, his daughter Cecilia, a sculptor, four grandsons and a great-grandchild.

I am descendent through Joshua and then Hiram. I have some great pics of Hiram's generation that I'd love to share.

George Hayward 1739 and Ann Durley 1731

It has been asserted that they were born in England. Although this is possible, I do not believe it is correct.
The primary fact that has been asserted to prove this is that on a 1788 land petition George stated that he came with his family in 1763 from Great Britain (mistranscribed in Sunbury County land records to say he was a native of GB)to Nova Scotia. It does not say England and it could have also been colonial Massachusetts which was the home of practically every 1763 arrival to the St. John River and in '63 part of GB. George felt he had not received the land he had been promised in '63 and would have wanted to emphasize his loyalty to the crown as the loyaltists were arriving in what was to become Sunbury County. Most other references to the family's being from England were oral history which is often incorrect. It seems correct that his great grandfather had come from England to MA about 1630, so they were English in origin. No record has ever been found for them in England.

I believe George came from Essex County, MA with many other settlers from that area. Among them Perleys which I believe was Ann's correct maiden name. Durley was never documented as her maiden name but passed through the family as tradition.

Tryphosa dau. of James Hayward/Howard 1808 NY

There must be a tie-in here someplace! I'm researching Tryphosa Hayward or Howard or Haywerd. Her death record gives her father as James. Unfortunately, his last name is very difficult to decipher. I believe she was born about 1808-1809 in CT, VT or NY.

She married James Ellis (probably in NY) and they relocated to Michigan about 1850. However, their first daughter Phylena Ellis was reportedly born June 25, 1829 in Meredith, Delaware Co., NY.

Tryphosa (nickname Trudie) died in Novi, Oakland County, MI 7 Sep 1877, James Ellis died 24 Aug 1893 also in Novi. They had six children. I have names of five: Phylena, Susan, Harriet, Thomas H. and James Jr.

Thomas H. Ellis is my great grandfather.
Hayward genealogy info found

About 3 years ago I purchased a package of genealogy info off Ebay on the Hayward family. I bought it because I have Mayflower ancestry that goes back to Resolved White and his parents. I'm in the process of proving this and my Brewster line.

I am not sure if this Hayward line connects to mine or not. There is a mention of a Nathan Hayward , M.D. born 1763 in Bridgewater MA who married a Joanna Winslow so this line probably has Mayflower ancestry too.

The material apparently belonged to an Elizabeth Andrews who lived in Cambridge MA. There are a number of correspondences addressed to her but nothing later then 1961. Some from Yale, Plymouth Antiquarian Society and etc thanking her for donations.

There is an 11 generation Hayward chart starting with Thomas Hayward(11), Nathaniel Hayward(10), Nathaniel (9)Josiah Hayward(8), Nathan(7), Nathan M.D.(6), James Thatcher(5), James Warren(4), Nathan (3), Nathan Jr (2), Nathan III(1).

There is a ton of information on this and related families along with stories, original receipts from 1843 & 1844, etc.

I'm willing to share some of this info with other researchers. I can look something up for you if you are researching this line. Sorry but I can't copy it all for anyone. Thanks Donna
John Richard Hayward Newspaper article old

Can anyone help me identify who this is? Perhaps he's a relative of someone's?

TRAM DRIVER CELEBRATES

A man who can tell many a tale of the good old days of horse drawn trams is Mr. John Richard Hayward, of Sommerville Avenue Mostin where recently celebrated his golden wedding. He is 79, Mrs. Hayward is 75.

Before being employed by Manchester Corp., Mr. Hayward was driver of a horse drawn tram and has experienced many wild rides along Rochdale Road against opposition from rival drivers. He drove the last of these vehicles - the 1210 from Albert Square before the opening of the electric system. He then became one of the first drivers on the electric trams.

During the first world war he served with the Motor Transport Section of the R.A.S.C. and during the last war joined the Home Guard. He never missed a parade or a manouevre, but at the age of 70, having reached the rank of sergeant, he finally had to stand down.

Between 1913 and 1940 he was employed as a time-keep with the Corporations Transport Department.

Mr. and Mrs. Hayward had 5 children and 10 grand-children. They were married at Queens Park Congregational Church. Mrs. Hayward made the "...? ..Anniversary..?...Hotel."

end of article.

There are pictures of both of them accompanying the article, which itself, is yellowed with age, and encased in tape. On the back of the article there is mention of "the 1954 Food Fair". I have no idea what newspaper printed this, i have no idea what country even! Hoping the clues mean something to someone.

My grandmother was born as HANNAH HAYWARD in April 1871 in England. She came to Canada in 1909. She married FREDERICK KINOMAN LOWNDES, and had a son CLIFFORD LOWNDES in 1913. (Cliff is my grandfather.)

Hannah died in 1961 in Mount Albert, Ontario. I don't know her family, parents, siblings and had to fight to find every detail i have on her so far. My tree is stuck and i'm hoping this will give me a clue. The newspaper article was found in my grandmothers posessions with some other family momento's, so i'm guessing John was Hannah's uncle or father or relation?
Does anyone out there have John in their tree????? Or have ideas of where he lived?
Anyways, thought i'd try!! Thanks for reading :)
I believe him to be my grandfather who was married to Elizabeth Vincent Hayward.
WHICH Sarah Hayward married Lovet / Lovett Partridge of Mendon, MA 1700s

OK, now I’m really confused. Several years ago I was given the information that Jonathan Hayward and Mary Warfield were the parents of the Sarah Hayward that married Lovet / Lovett Partridge. While playing with that branch today, I have come across other information that lists Hezekiah Hayward and Esther Greene / Green as the parents of the Sarah that married Lovet. This would actually seem more likely because Lovet and Sarah had a child named Hezekiah. The two Sarah’s were born two years apart in Mendon. Please help us sort this mess out so that we know WHICH Hayward branch is ours!!! Thanks!!!

My grandfather's mother was Alberta Hayward (abt. 1910 - 1984?) and she left behind detailed hand-written family records. These records are for the most part complete; however, when I compare her records to the Census and etc, it seems as if she's pegged her grandfather as her father.

The whole family at this point was constrained to New Jersey, so that might narrow it down geographically.

She says her father is Elias Hudson Hayward (Born abt. 1835?) from his second marriage to Elizabeth Little; however, the several censuses and other sources concur that her father was actually Alonz(o) Hayward (born abt. 1870) who was one of Elias's sons from his first marriage to Mary Jane Berry (born abt 1839?).

As far as the birth dates/ages at birth and census records go, Alonz(o) is clearly the father; but her written records are against this and I'm wondering why. I'm wondering if she wasn't just raised thinking that her grandfather was her father or if she was just not thinking clearly when she was writing the records at her old age. Does anyone know anything about this confusion?

I am looking for any information on the Hayward family, living in Michigan at the end of the 1800's. I have Robert G. Hayward, born about 1875, with children James, born 1899, Victoria, born 1900, and Charles, born 1904. Any information on Roberts' wife or parents would be appreciated. Thanks!
