re: Arthur Perry

1. The Arthur Perry who lived in the Fayerweather House was my grandfather's uncle. Your birth date looks about right with the censuses, I and know he remarried at least once. The Fayerweather House has a picture of him on the wall. My research indicated the B meant Burrows but who knows. My mother said he was known as "Uncle Bert". My grandmother said Arthur and Annie might have different fathers, but he was called Arthur Perry.

re: Susan Perry/Susan Johnson
2. There are several Susan Johnsons. Susan F. Johnson was born in 1859, the daughter of George and Mary Ann (Perry) Johnson of South Kingstown. That is my ancestor. She married Frank Perry and Henry Thomas. She had an older sister Mary who was born in the 1840s.

Now Susan F. had a niece Susan D. Johnson, born c. 1867, daughter of Abbie Wilcox and Abraham Johnson (son of George and Mary Ann Johnson). Abbie Wilcox's people were Indian, and I found Abbie and their children on public Indian records. They moved from SK to Charlestown and are buried on Indian land. Susan D. also had a sister named Mary L.E. Johnson, c1876-1901. (There were other Mary Johnsons, too.)

Finally, my grandmother remembers a Benjamin and Susan W. (Perry?) Johnson in the Willard Avenue area. I found their graves last month. She called them "Aunt Susan" and "Uncle Ben". I have found 2 Benjamin Johnsons that are kin, but neither one seems to match. My grandmother's older sister married/dated a man named Fenwick Perry, and Susan W. was his aunt. I have not been able to trace this cluster of Perrys to Abraham Perry or to Annie Perry's father Frank.

re: Abraham Perry
3. I came across Abraham and Rosannah Perry too. I'm starting to think there were at least two Abraham/Abram Perrys in the area. Abraham and Rosannah appeared to live in Charlestown. The Johnsons lived in South Kingstown, and on the 1850 census George and Mary Johnson were living with an Abram and Martha Perry. I could not find Martha after the 1850 census. On the 1870 census Abram Perry appears again in SK, living with a Hannah and James Perry. Finally in 1900 an Abram G. Perry was living in the South Kingstown asylum with Hannah Rhodes. I think one Abraham Perry might be the son/nephew of another, or it just may have been a common name at the time. Or Abraham had more than one marriage...

Very intrigued by your research on Alexander P Hazard. Hope we can meet up sometime.

I spent time documenting our link to Block Island with the help of the Newport Historical Society's Jeff Howe. He has documented Newport Sands and Tall Kate. Interred at the Indian Cemetery on Block Island are some of our Sands-Perry connections.

I don't have much on your line. Arthur Burell Perry son of, I thought it was Susan Johnson sister of Mary -- Arthur married Cornelia and Mabel Mitchell and Josephine Reels. They had a son Arthur. I have Arthur's birth date as 23 Feb 1878. I only have eight children for George and Mary Ann Johnson. Abraham G. (1801-1900) and Rosannah (1804-bef 1860) Perry's daughter Mary I have as being born abt 1844.

I have been trying to find out for years who Alexander P Hazard's parents were. I have been physically incapacited for sometime and not be able to travel has slowed my progess. I know that the library sits on the property once owned and occupied by Alex and Violet Sands Hazard.

I would like to see images of relations.

"Alec P. A. Hazard, a colored man, had a small house on the east of Long Pond and west of Spectacle Pond. It was burned about sixty years ago. His widow, who was living in the house at the time of the fire, was taken out by some of the family and carried to a friend's house on the west side of Long Pond. Mrs. Hazard lived later in a house that stood near the present location of the Matunuck Library. She sometimes went out nursing. Many people knew her by her name of "Aunt Violet". Mr. Hazard was considered above the average colored person of those times. He rented some large farms or took them on shares and was quite successful. Mr. and Mrs. Hazard had a large family, many of them girls. Some of them took many husbands and their offspring's were numerous. On the west side of the path leading toward Wash Pond a few rods south of the house that burned, there is a burial ground. Many of the family are buried there. Most of the graves have stones but none are marked". The Hills of Matunuck, Carder Whaley Written in 1941

I tried to get a copy of the manuscript but they were all sold out.

Funny you should mention this. Not even a month ago my grandmother told me she remembered some Hazard cousins had moved to the New Haven area. So I started asking older people I know in the Dixwell Ave community if they heard of Hazards or had any Hazard relations tracing back to Rhode Island... and someone did! We're still in the process of matching ancestors, etc. but it was pretty amazing as I have known the woman and her brother for 10 years and didn't know there was any connection.

This post has been up quite a while so I'm sure you have a lot of the pieces you were looking for by now. I am wondering if you learned anything about the Perry family that could help me.

So far I have traced one Hazard ancestor and two (maybe three) different Perry ancestors. My mother's maiden name was Potter, but her paternal grandmother was Annie E. Perry (1876-1942). Annie had four siblings: Arthur Perry, and after remarriage, Hope Thomas, Henry Thomas and Major (Marjorie?) Thomas. Annie's stepfather, Henry Thomas Sr. was born in VA so he isn't a relation to the Rhode Island Thomases.

Annie's father was Frank Perry. I haven't found his birth or death record, so I don't know who his parents/siblings are. All the other Frank Perry's I found in the time period were married to other people, so I'm at a dead end with him for now.

Annie Perry's maternal grandmother was Mary Ann Johnson (c1814-1901) and Mary Ann's father was Abraham Perry (often comes up as "Abram" in historical papers). I can't find any birth or death records, but a historical book written in the 1800s mentions a black "Abram" Perry who was born in the household of a white Thomas Hazard.

Finally my grandmother is the great-granddaughter of Alexander Perry Hazard and Violet Sands. They were both born around 1800 but I don't know anything about Alexander's past. I wonder if his mother also was a Perry.

Hello I was just talking to my grandmother about the Jones family. Her name is Florence, her mother was Catherine Jones and her grandparents were Sarah Hazard, Louisa's sister, and George Jones. At the state archives there is an 1885 RI Census where Catherine and Drusilla are living with Albert and Amanda Hazard, next door to Louisa and the Sebastians. She said that George Jones lived in a house on Willard Ave and he kept a small farm. She also said the name "Jones" came from a white doctor in Newport, who took George in after he escaped slavery in Mississippi.

Hi,
I am just starting out in researching the family history of my GG grandparents Peter and Mary Hazard(nee Curran) of County Down.
I am not sure if there is any connection to your family but thought you might see some connection. Peter was born in County Down in 1824 to Peter and Mary (McMillan) and Mary was born to Hugh Curran and Mary (Doran) in 1825. They were married in Belfast in April 1849. At some stage they travelled to USA where they had two children (in Illinois) and then travelled back to Ireland where they resided at "Mount Ross House" near Portaferry ( I have a photo of this house taken earlier this year). They then left Ireland for Australia with Peter arriving in 1854 and Mary in 1855 with one son (the daughter died on the voyage).

I am not sure of when/why they went to USA and if there are other relatives such as siblings that stayed in County Down or that moved to USA.

I would be glad to hear from you if you can see some relationship between the two.

Thanks

Leisa Greenaway

I am searching for my grandfathers family. His name was Franklin Theodore Hassard. I do not know much about him and i believe what I do know is not correct. I will tell you his frist born son was named William and his second son was harold. He had 5 sons and these are the only two out of the 5 that I could not find a family name (the first name). WE have always been told that he was born in New York and his family came from England. I have found a William Hassard with a son Frank in Ohio. Does any of this sound like anyone you know
Madonna onthewall2@sbcglobal.net

I'm looking to connect Elijah G. Hazard in New York. I know that his family was in Jefferson County and Oneida County. I don't know if there's a connection to Erie County, but after Elijah moved to Michigan, his daughter Ina Mae Hazard married Charles Carpp, who was born in Erie County.

Does anyone have an Elijah Hazard or a Carpp connection?

Yes, I am talking about the Hazards of RI and CT, who were descended from Thomas, who came to MA in 1636 and settled in RI in 1639. He came to New England from England or Wales, with his son Robert and daughters Hannah (married Stephen Wilcox) and Martha (married Ichabod Potter). The foregoing is from "Recollections of Olden Times," by Willis P. Hazard, 1879.

Tradition says a nephew also accompanied him, and became the progenitor of the New York and southern Hazards / Hazzards / Hassards.

I recommend this book, which is over 50% colorful anecdotes; also with genealogies of the Robinson, Hazard and Sweet families of RI as a good first read for anyone interested in any of these families.

I also have read that there is speculation attributing the middle Atlantic branch to the same nephew, altho what I wrote above is a near-quote from the book cited.

Sorry, I have no hard info on Hassards of Ireland.

Lineage of the Ninigrets tied to Rodman

Lineage of the Ninigrets

The first Ninigret who reigned over the Narragansett Tribe of Indians was call the Elder Ninigret. Upon his death, which occured soon after the close of King Philip's war in 1675, his daughter by his first wife was crowned, but was shortly followed by his son by his second wife, the Younger Ninigret, who died about 1722, leaving two sons, Charles Augustus, who succeeded his father, and George.

At the death of Charles Augustus, his minor son Charles was acknowledged as sachem by a portion of the tribe, but the greater part adhered to his uncle, George. This dispute was ended by the death of young Charles, and George received the Royal Belt and other royal insignia in 1735.

George Ninigret left three childern, Thomas, George and Esther. Thomas known as "King Tom", was born in 1738, and succeeded his father, George, in 1746. He married Mary Whitfield of Newport in April, 1761, and died in the latter part of 1769 or early in 1770.

Thomas Ninigret's only son and also his brother, George, having died previously. Thomas was succeeded by his daugher Esther, who was crowned in 1770. Queen Esther in turn was succeeded by her son George, who at the age of 22 was killed by a falling tree. His death occurred during the War of the Revolution, 1775-1782. After this time the Narragansett Indians had no ruling sachem.

Elder Ninigret

Younger Ninigret

Charles Augustus Ninigret

George Niningret

Thomas Ninigret, the King Tom

Esther

George

A daughter of Thomas Ninigret married Christopher Harry, a member of Thomas Ninigret's council of Indians. Children were Christopher Ninigret Harry, Daniel Ninigret Harry, Mary Ninigret Harry, Caroline Ninigret Harry, Hannah Ninigret Harry, Martha Ninigret Harry, an Anna Ninigret Harry.

Daniel Ninigret Harry, born 1807, died 1885. Children: Eliza, Sarah, Daniel, Lydia, Mary, and Luther.

Caroline Ninigret Harry, born 1805,died 1861, married Isaac Rodman, son of Molly Rodman. Children Caroline Rodman, Mary Rodman, Hannah Rodman, and Christopher Rodman.

Mary Rodman, born 1830, died 1891, married Moses V. Noka, son of John and and Esther Rodman Noka. Children: Martha Rodman, Mary Jane, Caroline Harry, Sarah Abby, Daniel Rodman, John Henery, and Christopher Ellsworth Noka.

Hannah Rodman, born 1832, died 1901, married William Fayerweather. I can't remember the name of the book but you could look it up on the used book sites. I think she ran a health/hospital clinic and a good number of people starved to death on her treatments.

I always thought Hazard was the Northern spelling and Hassard the Southern spelling ?

Polly

Edward Hazard (b. 1775/1776) m. Deborah Ballard

We have been searching for documentation that provides a birth date for Edward Hazard.

In a book: Revolutionary War Veterans of Chenango County, NY by Nelson B Tiffany pub. 1998 on pages 515-517;

Edward Hazard (s/o Stewart Hazard) b. 4 SEP 1776 in Caunghawaga, NY. m. 25 SEP 1796 Persis Allen (d. shortly after marriage). m2. 11 FEB 1799 in Windsor, NY to Deborah Ballard (b. 1776; dau of John and Sarah [Covell] Ballard; d. 16 MAY 1867 in Great Bend, PA) d. 4 APR 1863.

Edward is buried at Riverside Cemetery, in Kirkwood, Broome, NY. His headstone gives a date of death: 4 APR 1863 AE 87y 7m. If you calculate this you get a birth date of abt SEP 1775.

Does anyone have documentation that supports Edwards date of birth for either date, other than the sources above?

Second Problem: If the death information on the headstone is 100% correct (which is often not the case), Stewart could not be Edward's father. Reason:

In a book: Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Caugnawaga, now The Reformed Church of Fonda, NY; pub 1917 on page 33. Thankful Hazard was born 25 MAR 1775 to Stuward Hazard and Rachel Clark and baptisized 11 MAY 1775.

The DAR has accepted 4 applications for Edward Hazard who married Deborah Ballard under the father of Joshua Hazard. (I am currently awaiting the Joshua Hazard Patriot file from DAR to review their proof.

Therefore, I am searching for some sort of documentation that supports Edward Hazard's date of birth and/or his father. (other than the sources stated above and other than the powder horn newspaper article and Alva Ray Hazard's research).

Anyone with information can contact me at: amyers1966@gmail.com or janmy3rs@yahoo.com
Jan

Myaunt was Anna Woodard.
Have been trying to trace this line and hope you can help.
I was wondering what relation Charles Hazard was to my Aunt. She was married first to Able Pardon Potter.
Any help would appreciated. The same is true of the descendents of Hoos/Heikes which is why I eventually met my ex-husband and had a daughter Stephanie! So, as I stated before, that is the only tie that I am aware of between Hoos/Heikes.

Vicki,
that is correct, I hope this thread doesn't get people confused. The Hoos/Heikes line comes from my ex-husband's side, so of course MY daughter has Hazards (my line) and Hoos/Heikes (her father's side) in HER family tree. That is the only way there are any connections between Hazards and Hoos/Heikes. Hope this clarifies for everyone.
Mary

As far as I know, the Hazards are only tied to the Heikes/Hoos through me......my maiden name is Hazard, my daughter's father was a Chereck. His ancestors were Hoos and Heikes. I have been communicating with you via the Hoos message board so am confused how you ended up at the Hazard message board. Did I post something to the wrong board? :)

I found an Elijah Hazard (b 1829 NY d 1890 MI)in my database but he's not related to my lines. I gathered the information several years ago from the Rootsweb Hazard list from Barb Eberhart and Frank Hazard correspondence. They might still be on the List and this site is gatewayed to that list so perhaps you have already heard from them? I'd be interested in any additional data you might have to help tie some of these families together better. Good Hunting Vicki

Hazard Family Letters, West Castleton VT, Web Publication

This is to announce the Web publication of more than 200 digital images of 19th-century letters bequeathed to the State of Vermont and the public by Martha B. Warren, the step-daughter of Samuel L. Hazard Sr., the slate magnate and founder of the Hazard "dynasty" of West Castleton, Vermont from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Martha B. Warren willed the Hazard lands to the State of Vermont in 1959, creating Bomoseen State Park, and eventually, the well-known "Slate History Trail" in West Castleton.

It seems that most of the letters were directed to Samuel's wife Olivia from her brother in New Orleans and elsewhere in the South. Most date from the 1840s-1860s, though some go back to the 1810s.

The letters are housed in the Park Ranger House, also called the Martha B. Warren House or Hazard House, in Lake Bomoseen State Park. Very few people know of their existence. They lie in two oversized manila folders in the bottom of a cardboard box in the closet. Because my main interests lie elsewhere, I have made no attempt to inventory, date, or transcribe these letters. What I have done is digitize them and make them publicly available, for whomever might find them of interest.

This collection of some 215 or so digital images can be found at: http://www.familyhistoryfiles.com/site_text/WCJ-May07/wcj2-p...

Happy reading, and I look forward to hearing from anyone who finds these letters of interest,

Mike
