My father is Ed Hazell who wrote "Some Came Free" a history of one family of Hazells in Australia in the 1800s. Our original ancestor from England was transported to Australia in 1837. He came from a village called Blofield in Norfolk. His name was William Hazell.

Some of his descendants did move to the upper Hunter valley. Most however remained in southern NSW around Gunning and Yass.

There is a Hazell family reunion being held this October at Young NSW.

Hazell, number 3084, who was awarded a Queen's Sudan Medal, and who was possibly wounded on October 30, 1899 at Ladysmith, during the Boer War.

Any information would help.

Much obliged.

Hazells of Norfolk

My grandmother was Elizabeth Maude Hazell ( I never knew her) She was born in Scottow Norfolk to Edmund Hazell and his second wife Sarah Ann Hubbard. Census records say Edmund was born in Scottow about 1835 although he can not be found on these records until 1871 where he is in Scottow with first wife Jane Jemima Balls. Records have me believe his father was Benjamin Hazell, although I can not trace someone of this name in the area at time of Edmunds birth.
Back to grandmother Elizabeth Maude Hazell , she was the mother of 2 illegitimate sons, my father being the elder born in 1905 and his brother a year later. They were both registered with surname of Hazell although both used their 3rd fore name of Hewitt as surname. Neither are now around to ask my questions. Would love to know if anyone can go further back for Edmund and if there is any knowledge of Hewitt/Hazell family

Hi Noel

We now have eight children for Robert and Elizabeth and that's not including Eli, who I think may possibly be Robert's nephew (William's son). If you email me at contactshane at symbol hotmail.com (at symbol = @). I'll let you know what we've got so far. It would be good if we hear from Tim, he might be related to the New Zealand Hazells after all.

Regards
Shane

Hello Shane,
Just arrived back from a week in Yorkshire. Thanks for the information. I did not know about William. The earliest child that I have for Robert & Elizabeth is Eli b. c1824. I guessed that there were earlier children!! Will keep searching. I'm sure the Castle Combe Hazells are related - but how?
I received a message at the beginning of the year from another distant relative, Tim. (we have the same great grandfather, James Hazell b 1846 Castle Combe. Tim lives in New Zealand but there has been no follow-up unfortunately.
Regards, Noel.

Hello Noel

Have you noticed that a 'William Hazle' was the witness at the marriage of Robert Hazle to Elizabeth Andres in Castle Combe? Robert and Elizabeth also named there first born son William in 1817. It is very tempting to assume that Robert and William are related, possibly even brothers. It will be interesting to see what a bit more research reveals.

Best wishes
Shane
Thanks, Dorothy! Just wanted to be sure. This Richard may have been the Richard who married Monica Turley, since it is his son, Ignatious who settled into Green County, KY. Richard who married Monica Turley, died rather young in 1772; leaving behind his widow and two children: Ignatious and Caleb. Caleb was married to Elizabeth Hanks Hall and was teacher to Abraham Lincoln for two years of Lincoln's life. It is believe that some relationship existed between Abraham', mother, Nancy Hanks and Elizabeth Hanks Hall Hazel.

John Fox
Winston Salem, NC
bebenjohn@aol.com

According to the first posting: Hazell, who was in the 1st Regiment, Ky Lt. Dragoons, b. 1793, d. 1836.

This sounds to me to be the son of Ignatious Hazel who had a son Henson Hazel who was born in Green County, KY 11 March 1824 and died 10 January 1895 in Lake County, CA.

The Richard who was a son of Ignatious had eight siblings: William, Alfred, Bennett, Mary, John, Burr, Strother, and Polina.

Some of these names appear in my own Hazell family of my ancestor, Bennett Lee Hazell of Culpeper County, Va and Orange County, NC.

Interestingly, a Strother family had some ties to the Neathers family of Culpeper County, Va. Neathers was the maiden name of the mother of my Bennett Hazell.

I need to correct as statement which I made earlier. Monica Turley's father was Paul Turley; but Ignatious Turley was a son of Paul and brother to Monica Turley Hazle.

John Fox
Winston-Salem, NC
bebenjohn@aol.com

Hello Stephen and all,

We have a Yahoo group, THE HAZEL FAMILY at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/The_Hazel_Family/

where you may find information to help you in your research. I am a descendant of Elisha Hazell who was served in the St. Mary's County, MD militia during the Revolutionary War; he eventually settled into Culpeper County, Va. He had a brother, Richard Hazell. Both married Neathers sisters; Richard settled into Green County, KY.

There was also a Binit Hazel who was in St. Mary's County, MD at the time Elisha was there. Elisha named his eldest son, Bennett who is my ancestor who settled into Orange County, NC from Culpeper ca 1840. Bennett had a brother, John N. Hazell who moved with his uncle, Richard Hazell to KY. John N. Hazell married Mary Hazle, daughter of Ignatious Hazle of Green County, KY. Ignatious was a son of Richard Hazle who lived for a while in Fairfax Co. VA who was married to Monica/Monyca Turley; her father was Ignatious Turley. These families have been successfully linked through DNA testing.

You can also reach me at Bebenjohn@aol.com which will most likely be more expedient.

John Fox
Winston-Salem, NC

Hello All,

Regardless of how the name is spelled, Hazle, Hazel, Hazell, the family is the same. This has been substantially been established through DNA testing. If there is a name bearing Hazell descendant of this Richard Hazell, any uncertainty can be cleared though testing that descendant's DNA.

John Fox
Winston-Salem, NC
Descendant of Elisha Hazell of St. Mary's County, MD and Culpeper County, VA.

Hi Sarah

I am Lousia Hazell's (nee Hall) great grandson. My grandmother was her daughter Alice, she was one of Louisa's twelve children. Ivor, Louisa and four of their children came to New Zealand in 1909, two more of the childen followed in 1911. Six children remained in the UK.

I am in touch with at least some of the descendants of most of the twelve children. Though I've been unable to trace descendants for three of the twelve; Jesse, Eva and George.

I know Jesse married Albert Henry Herbert who worked for the railways and they had a daughter Vera and a son. Eva went to live with an old couple when she was 13 and looked after them, and George trained at Aldershot. Would you know what happened to any of them?

I live in New Zealand but I travelled to the UK in 1980 and have visited Blaenavon, I remember going to a corner shop there and having a long chat with the shop owner who I think was named Sally Watkins (if my diary is correct). I was looking at the photos I took there before.

I don't know hardly anything about the Halls. My Nana's sister Aunty Vera told me that the Hall men were miners. She also said that her mother (Louisa) used to talk to them in Welsh when she got angry with them. Do you know whether any of them spoke Welsh?

I have a nice photo of Louisa, also several photos of her husband Ivor, and eight of the children.

regards
Shane

Hello Tim,
I rushed the last message. James Hazell was, as for you, my great grandfather(not 2x!!). His daughter, Fanny, by his first wife, Mary Rees, b. 1876 was my grandmother. She m. David James in 1901(8mths after James's second m. to Margaret Ellen Booth). One of their daughters, Dorothy Irene, was my mother who m. James Albert Duffield in 1927. I have more information about this line and I have found out information about James's ancestors. I also have information about another line descended from his youngest daughter, Olive(with Mary). I have little info about any possible second family other than a little shown on the Tredegar House website. I eagerly await the 1911 census results! I hope that this is of help to you to begin with.
Cheerio, Noel

Hello Shane,
Many thanks for your message. "My" Robert was b. c1781 in the Stroud district. (See census records for 1851 Castle Combe). He m. Elizabeth (Andres 18 Oct 1816. See IGI. This obviously needs further confirmation). They had at least 5 children-see 1851 Census-who were: Eli,Joseph(my 2xgreat grandfather), John, Thomas and George. There may have been earlier children. Two other families are shown in the 1851C in Castle Combe: William & Elizabeth and Margaret, a widow, with her son William. I feel that there are likely to be connections between these families. Unfortunately, I have not seen the Parish Records for Castle Combe or for the Stroud district which might enlighten us. Also, unfortunately, the 1841 census records for Castle Combe seem to be missing.
I have no information for your William and would welcome any information.
Best Wishes,
from the Old to the New World,
Noel
Personally, I've never come across any records mentioning a 'Garreth' - but Ivor Hazell's (late) daughter Vera apparently had some recollections of this individual. It was initially assumed he was married to Ada, but it seems that this wasn't the case. Therefore, he remains a bit of a mystery character.

I'll have to ponder over this one. With your info, I'm not sure where 'Garreth' fits in - or even if he does at all. Will have to check on that.

I did find Thomas Shannon in the IGI records, although he is listed there as 'Thomas Shanahan' (1870-1939) and his daughter as 'Gwladys Shanahan'. Thomas' parents are given as John Shanahan (1841-1875) and Elizabeth Buckingham Bowen (~1831-????).

These are the children of Henry and Mary Ann as I have them:

Margaret b. 1859
Louisa b. 1861
Jane b. 1863
Elizabeth b. 1866
Joseph b. 1868
Ada b. 1870
Amelia b. 1874
Cordelia b. 1877
William J b. 1879

I understand that there were two more children born after the 1881 census but I have no information on these.

Yes Mary Jane was also known as Jane, I have the same children for Henry and Ann Hall. I did find Ann in 1891 living with daughters Ada, Amelia, Cordelia and sons Joseph and William. Joseph is stated as Head and he has a 1 year old neice Gwladys with them. Also a lodger William Green. I think Gwladys may of been Ada's daughter?? They were living at 22 Stack Square and Ann was a widow.

Hi Shane,

My Gt GT Grandmother was Mary Jane sometimes known as Jane, Louisa's sister. She was born in 1863 and married George Buck and had six children with him. George died in 1897 she then remarried in 1900 to my Gt Gt Grandfater William Jones. They had two children Margaret and my Gt gran Elizabeth known as Dinah, she was born 1903 and passes away in Blaenavon Hospital in 1990. There were other children gon't know of them yet.

Henry Hall Louisa and Mary's father was a Filler at Furnaces according to the 1871 census and was down as a coke filler on 1861 census. In 1881 he was down as Labourer within the ironworks. They lived at various addresses within the ironworks. I have their brother Joseph down as working in the ironworks at the blast furnace at 13 years of age and in 1891 and 1901 he was a Blackmith.

The ironworks is now open as a tourist attraction to the public and is great to wander around and see where ancestors worked and lived. There are a few websites with give info on the ironworks, its now run by CADW. Worth taking a look!! I can take some pics and send to you if your interested?

There is also a mine called Big Pit which is a popular tourist attraction, some of the Hall's may very well of worked in that mine or any others.

I don't know if they spoke welsh I don't know a great deal about them myself. I know MAry lost one eye but don't know how. I have a photo of her, can't say its a nice photo but if you'd like to see it can email it to you. I would also be interested in seeing pic of Louisa and fam.

The lady you said you spoke to was my mum's sisters mother in law. Did you find anything interesting out about the Hall's when you were over here.
Blaenavon has changed quite a bit since your visit, we now have world heritage status and things are being done slowly to improve the town and attract more tourists into the actual town.

Regards

Sarah
I have never come across a Garreth!! Where did you get that info? I have brothers for Thomas Shannon as James and William Buckingham born in Devon and and John and Henry Shannon born in Nantyglo. They are all very confusing because their mother was down as Elizabeth Ricks and she was married to a Charles Ricks after John Shannon dies. In 1891 Thomas is down as a Ricks not a Shannon is brothers also.

Re: Richard Hazell, War of 1812

Thank you for posting this note. We believe this is an ancestor --name and birth and death dates match our records. Our research indicates Richard, born 1793 in Virginia, was the son of Ignatius Hazle (Richard is the first case where we see the name spelled Hazell). During the War of 1812, Richard served as a private in Captain Warner Ellmore's Company, First Regiment Kentucky Light Dragoons. He was married 3 times, the first to Elizabeth Wright in Green County, KY, on 9 August 1813. On 11/15/1816, he received a warrant for 150 acres of land for $30, in Green County, KY. We do not know what happened to his wife Elizabeth, but he married again on 24 December 1824. On September 15, 1831, he married again while living in Sangamon County, Illinois. He had at least ten children and died 22 March 1836 at Galena, Illinois.
Re: Edward HAZELL / Emma COOK Family in Kansas by 1877

In researching same family, I found indications that the daughter's names were Mary Ellen Hazell born 21 Aug 1869 in Wisconsin and Emma Jeanett Hazell born 8 Sept 1871 also in Wisconsin. Emma's middle name could have been Janitt. Some family research indicates that these two daughters could have been born in Illinois instead of Wisconsin. Also indication that Emma married William Stucklik (although reported as Stuchl, believe Stucklik is more accurate) and Mary married Brian McCarty.

As for William, 1920 U.S.census shows William working as a fireman in Salem, Marion County, Oregan, age 43, white male. Born in Wisconsin, parents born in Illinois. He owns his home, free of mortgage. Wife Lavinia is 42, daughter Susie is 19. Lavinia keeps house, Susie is a telephone operator. The 1930 census shows that he was a farmer for the Wisconsin State Institute (for feeble-minded people) and Lavinia, his wife, was an attendant there. Hope this helps.

Re: Hazell family in Maryland, 19th century

Maryland Census 1772-1890 shows Richard Hazle on the Rent Rolls in St. Mary's County in 1768. From there, the family seems to have moved to New York, Virginia,Kentucky and Illinois (Jo Daviess County) in about the early to mid-1800's. By this time, they are spelling the name as Hazell. I have a note that Richard had 9 children but do not show their names.
