John Hazeltine Upton/Uxbridge/Sutton MA 1740s-1760s

During the 1740s a John Hazeltine of Upton boughyt up the shares in an iron works developed on the Blacktone River in 1740 or 1741 Was this John Hazeltine the same that founded the town of Upton?

Around 1760 John Hazeltine acquired the lease to operate John Merritts iron works on the Mumford River in Uxbridge after Nicholas Baylies' lease expired.

In May 1765 Hazelting acknowledged his indebtedness to Merritt of 450 pounds plus his obligations for the lease of the Uxbridge iron works and an associated farm. Hazeltine signed over to Merritt a 400 acre farm in Upton, a smaller farm in Sutton, and 30 acres on the Blackstone on which stood the iron works, corn mill, bolting mill, and scythe mill.

I can't find any record of transfer of the iron works from Merritt to the next owner in Registry of Deeds. Can anyone help?

Hi!

I am searching for the birth certificate of my great-grandfather Frank Richard Hazeltine. I am told and it is written in his obituary that he was born on November 12, 1880 in Parker, Turner County, South Dakota. Requests to Vital Records in South Dakota have proved fruitless. He lived most of his adult life in Beloit, Rock County, WI, passing away there on September 20, 1976.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at jm1536@comcast.net

Thank you.

I have no idea.
I think I found the family in the 1860 Maine census living with the Winthrop Stevens family. It looks like Asa (age 18) is living with his mother, Sarah, and two siblings John, age 15 and David, age 12.

I checked the 1850 census to see if his father is listed and I found Sarah (same age as 1860 census) and what appears to be 7 kids: Sara R age 22; Wm. age 16; Joseph age 13; Abigal age 11; Asa B. age 8; John B. age 5 and David age 2. In 1850 they are living a few houses from the Steven's family.

Don't know how to check from there.

It appears he was in the Union army. Maybe theres a pension record.

Lorraine

Hazeltine's from Maine

Hello,
I saw your email about Hazeltines and your comment that they are all related. I just found information about a Hazeltine family that connects to my family.

In about 1889 John F. Hazeltine married Emma J. McGrath, I believe in Philadelphia PA. The 1900 census reports him and his family living in Lebanon Co. PA. It states he was born in Maine. They have two children, Agnes born in NJ 1890 and Charles A. born in PA 1896. I just received the death notice of another son, John F. who died at 7 months in 1894 and was buried in Camden.

A search of the 1888 and 1889 Camden city directories shows John living with Asa Hazeltine.

Searching for John and Asa in the 1880 census I found them in Des Moines Iowa. Asa's wife is Matilda and she is also born in Maine as is their son Joseph. Their sons, Asa Jr. and Charles A. were born in Nebraska.

I searched for them in 1870 and found them in Jackson, Waldo Co Maine. The household includes Asa, Matilda, Joseph and John and also a 68 year old Sarah - presumably Asa's mother.

Finally, I found Asa in 1920 living at the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Washington TN. I don't know if this is the same Asa as this Asa reports his parents birthplace as England. In 1880 that Asa reported his parent's birthplaces as Maine.

Does any of this strike a cord?

Lorraine
Maryland

Margaret O'Malley McGrath, death? 1924+ possibly Lebanon Co PA

I hope to find a reference to the death of Margaret McGrath.

I have tried for years to find the death notice for Margaret McGrath (nee O'Malley) who was born about 1844 in Ireland. I believe she died sometime after November 1924 when she was last known to be alive in Philadelphia.

She may have died in Jonestwon, Lebanon County but since she had an extensive Philadelphia family I anticipate her death would have been noted locally.

She was the widow of Eugene McGrath (aka Owen McGrath) and had a daughter, Emma, wife of John Hazeltine, who likely resided in Jonestown, Lebanon County. Her son, John, predeceased his mother.

Her known grandchildren were Agnes (b. 1890) and Charles (b. 1895)

She was predeceased by her siblings Mary Jane Faris, Bernard O'Malley, Annie O'Malley and Michael O'Malley. It is unknown if she survived her brother Peter O'Malley. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Honora (aka Ann) O'Malley who were born in Ireland and died in Philadelphia, PA.

I appreciate any assistance you can offer, including reference to resources to search newspapers in Lebanon County PA from that era.

Thank you,
Lorraine
Maryland
Karen, thanks so much! Yes, John (b. 1620-d. 1690) was born in England, might even have served under Cromwell, and certainly could have fought in King Philip’s War. I do not know Nat(h)aniel, though. Brother to John? Any more detail or information on your source?

Karen, thanks so much for giving me Samuel's officer grade. I've since been in touch with a Hazeltine descendant (through her husband) who reports, "Lieut. Samuel2 (John1) Hazelton [note sp. change] married at Haverhill December 28, 1670, Deborah, daughter of Peter Cooper of Rowley. He lived in Bradford on part of the old homestead of his father where he died 1717. He was one of the original members of the church of Bradford. His wife joined in 1682." (Genealogical Sketches of Robert and John Hazelton and some of their descendants compiled by Dr. William B. Lapham, Portland, ME, publ. by F.H. Hazelton, 1892; p. 103.)

Further, on p. 306, "Ensign Samuel Hazeltine and wife Deborah of Bradford sold to David Haseltine of same, upland next to David's own land in Bradford, eight acres, etc., Dec. 8, 1685."

I think my search will now take me to the towns of Bradford, Rowley, and even Townshend, VT, where their descendants settled under a grant in 1753.

For any further interest you may have on King Phillip's War, I posted an article at www.militaryhistoryonline.com. More to come, I hope!

Betsy Jewett Hazeltine

I am looking for any Jewett line that may have a record of an Elizabeth "Betsy" SISCHO/SISCO either as a descendent of a female Jewett or as a marraige partner to a Jewett. She eventually went on to marry an Eli Hazeltine. Her place of Origin would either be New Hampshire or Vermont. Her father MAY have been either William (b 1748) SISCHO/SISCO and married to Abigail RAND or Samuel SISCHO/SISCO (b. 1756) and married to Mary LANG.

Family trees for both Sischo Males listed above lay claim to her but both are lacking concrete evidence that she belongs to either line.

I have , in hand, a birth record for an Elizabeth SISCO born to william and Abigail AND a birth record for an Elizabeth born to Samuel and Mary. (wish they could have been more original in anming their kids) Neither record included the middle name of JEWETT. Sisco family researchers have placed her into both families . . . but that is not possible.

So, is there a Jewett researcher who has come across any record that would show a Jewett being married to a Sischo/Sisco or maybe even a RAND that is connected to Benjamin and Catherine RAnd?? Or even to a LANG that is connected to a William and Elizabeth (Rand) LANG?

Any hints or clues would be helpful. Any bona fide documents would be treasured!

Many Thanks

Denise Siscoe

Hazeltine and MARTIN Connection

I have recently received information that my great grandfather's sister was named either HAZELTINE ORLENA or ORLENA HAZELTINE MARTIN. She was born in TN in 1854. She married JAMES IRVIN CRADDOCK in MO and they moved to Victor, Ravalli County, MT in around 1886. They were the parents of 8 Children, the last being born in 1899. In 1900 Federal Census for MT James Irvin Craddock was listed as a widower.
Hazeltine's brother was named ALEXANDER LANE MARTIN, born on 26 DEC 1855 in TN. Their mother and father were both born in TN according to a 1870 Fed census for Dent County, Watkins area, MO.
Their mother's name was MARY maiden name unknown. Their father's name is unknown and family story is that he either was killed or choose to disappear in the CIVIL WAR.
Can anyone connect my MARTIN line to a HAZELTINE line???
Any information will be appreciated...Thank You...Nancy Ann Smith

Sam'l Hazeltine in King Philip's War

Samuel Hazeltine (1645-1717) of Rowley, Essex Co., Mass., was an ancestor who I believe would have been mustered into the Essex Regiment during King Philip’s War. (He was the son of John Hazeltine, b. 1620, in Biddeford, Devonshire, England, and m. Deborah Cooper Dec. 26, 1670, in Haverhill, MA.) If he was, it would mark my fifth ancestor (after Ballou, Draper, Fisk and Pierce) to have served God and country in that conflict. Any information would be mightily appreciated and contribute to an article I'm writing!

It is interesting that your family background apparently cites both a Hazeltine background and a Holmes background. As you may know, Oliver Wendell Holmes I, was the writer and Doctor, and father of three, one of whom was O.W Holmes II, Justice of the Supreme Court. Of the other two chilren, it is believed that at least one moved to New Hampshire, and had a daughter by name of Edith Holmes, Grad. Boston University app. 1914. Ayers Village, outside of Haverhill, Massachusetts may have been home for the Holmes family at one time, as there was a connection between the Holmes family and the Hazeltine's of Ayer's Village. (See also, Hazeltime Girls School, Bradford, Mass., across the Merrimac River from Haverhill. Best of luck in your persuits!
I think that I still have some glassware from the Holmes side of the familyt! - Edson F. White
Thank you so very much for your reply. I will certainly follow up on your information. Two of my known Holmes had careers that including political offices. Otis Halbert Holmes, Sr. was a minister in the state of Iowa and also held a state office. His son, Otis Halbert, Jr. was Rep.State of Washington. The family was well educated as far back as I have been able to go...Lulu Hazeltine Holmes was a graduate student and faculty member in Kansas and a later Lulu Hazeltine Holmes was a professor at Berkeley in California as well as Dean of Girls at Washington State. I know that Thomas, my gggrandfather was born in New York..but who his parents were, I don't know. He was born around 1829. He was the father of Otis Sr. and Lulu Hazeltine. He died early in Iowa. I am so anxious to learn more about the Hazeltine connection...I know there is a clue out there somewhere that will explain why the girls were named Hazeltine. Again, thanks so much..I appreciate your interest.
Betty
