Re: Hazeltons in Manchester, VT

Karen, we may have communicated a year or two ago. My problem is still: Where does Sarah come from? My g-grandfather Luman Ballou was the son of Jirah Ballou and Sarah Jane Hazelton. Luman also published poetry, such as this tale from his unnamed grandmother: "I had four big brothers, / And this was all their names: / Benjamin and Joseph, / Lemuel and James. / Besides there were five sisters, / And a jolly lot were we; / There was Keziah and Calista, / and Susan Jane and me. / My name was Sally, / Next to me little Dorothy came, / But we always called her Rothy / To shorten up her name."
Family anecdote says Jirah married 14-year-old Sarah Jane (May 5, 1820-Oct. 14, 1858) from Manchester. The 1840 Census for Manchester has an Alonzo Hazelton with a nameless wife and four children--but this is a deadend.
Further, Luman came home on leave from the war to visit an "Uncle Lucius." Lucius, b. 1812, was a stone-cutter in Dorset.
You can see why I've had to make a major assumption that Sarah Jane, a Danby resident buried in North Rupert, was the daughter of Solomon and Sally Wilder. Can you see any confirmation anywhere?!
--Walt Giersbach

So glad for you. I e-mailed the Dorset Historical Society two years ago to let them know about my g-grandfather's diaries, and they said they were too busy with the leaf peepers to reply. If you have a name, phone number or e-mail address I should get in touch. And do let me know what you have in the way of info.

I think I may have something from my printout of the info on a zip drive: My g-g-g-grandmother was Electra Hazelton, daughter of Solomon Hazelton (7th gen. desc. of Robert Hazeltine). You'll need to determine where the Hazeltons and Reeds intermarried, and why there are so many Solomons in the families.

US Census 1850-Pawlet, Rutland, VT. [Solomon Reed) b NY. Delia 40, Gustavus 19, Martin 15. Nancy 14. 1860 Census shows him in Dorset, VT. Augustavus 29 (Solomon's son Gustavus) Lydia 24 (wife Lydia Bromley), Solomon I. 1870 Census shows him in Dorset, Bennington Co., VT. He 68 b. VT, Electra 60 Living with Ebenezer Reed 43 (nephew) and Lois 30. Solomon died of consumption.

"Solomon Reed lived for many yeaars upon the land formerly occupied by his father (Isaac Reed), a portion of which lies in the town of Pawlet, and upon which Solomon now resides. He has been thrice married; first to Diantha Ormsby, next to Rachel Hathaway, who died in 1847, aged 41; and last to Electra Hazelton. He has always been a tough, hard laboring man, and a great hunter, in which he frequently engaged in his younger days than of late, being a bold, adventurous and courageous man. That portion of the town has ever been a haunt for wild beasts, and more especially bears....
"Solomon, together with his brother Ichabod, who was a young man of feeble health, was out one day in what is known as 'Fir Swamp' after balsam...." And there is more, from the "History and Map of Danby, Vermont," 1869, by J.C. Williams.
Keep in touch if you'd like to compare more notes.

Erin, thanks for your query. I dug back through the Hazelton (Haselton, Hazeltine) family tree at rootsweb.com and the chatroom run by some old Hazelton curmudgeon. Finally pieced things together, but...all my files are on zip disk stored with my old PC till I get relocated in six months. Solomon is a name that keeps coming up as a Hazelton daughter's husband (yep, in Dorset).
Several other names came to me through my g-grandfather's diaries, posted at Vermontcivilwar.org ( http://vermontcivilwar.org/units/7/ballou.php). He grew up in Dorset c. 1864. They might offer a lead to you--and I'll try to get back to you.
--Walt Giersbach (aka timberline)

Polly Hazelton/Hazeltine, Wife of Uriah Johnson

My 4th great grandparents are Uriah Johnson and Polly Hazelton or Hazeltine, of Weathersfield, VT. Polly was deceased by July, 1802 when she and her husband & children are mentioned in her father's will. She is listed as John Hazeltine's late daughter, and the late wife of Uriah Johnson. Their children are Uriah Johnson Jr., Sophia Johnson, Stephen Johnson (my 3gg grandfather), and Eliza Johnson. Stephen was born in 1794, so it's very likely that all of their children were minors. I have information on Stephen & Sophia, but nothing more on the other two children. Most of the information I have on the Hazelton/Hazeltine families were sent to me by others, I am just beginning to research this part of my ancestry. From the information I have, John Hazeltine Sr.'s 1st wife (and mother of Polly) was Abigail Bruce. I have that John married Betty Hinds in 1795.

Is anyone else researching this line?

Beulah Hazelton

I am looking for information on the Hazelton familty. My great great grandfather James Hinchman married a Buelah Hazelton in Gloucester County, NJ November 16, 1809. Her parents names were Abigal & William Hazelton. James & Beulah had a son named William Hazelton Hinchman bor October 1, 1815 in NJ. (The story goes he was born near Hazelton, Pa) but not the one shown on the map today. That one is spelled Hazleton. It may now be a part of Philadelphia. William is my great grandfather and I am looking for any of his siblings. The Hazelton name has been carried down through generations as a middle name and still is. Any help will be appreciated.

Tomorrow I'm meeting with a lady from the Dorset Historical Society again about the Hazeltons and Lackeys I'm looking for. The info is on a piece of paper kept from some old church records. I'm really hoping to make a connection between Ichabod, Joseph, and Solomon. There was also a Ralza Hazelton in the town records. Thank you for responding timberline. I wasn't sure you were at this anymore. Look forward to hearing from you.
Erin in Wells, VT

I believe I'm looking for the same family line. I'm searching for Ichabod, his father I believe is Joseph, his father is possibly Solomon. I have been unsuccessful at getting too much more;especially date wise. There is a connection, but nothing concrete. Ichabod was my GGG grandfather. He married Josephine Lackey. Again dates are unclear. I'm just looking for that one key piece of info that will open this all up for me. I keep going back to the Dorset town office thinking something will show up. My project now is checking cemetery listings for Hazelton and Lackey names.

Desperately seeking in VT,
Erin

This is great information. I met with Pat from the Dorset Historical Society last week and you would not believe it! She has a notebook that someone was kind enough to leave filled with Hazelton genealogoy. There is a lot of work because it intertwines with other families. I was so overwhelmed by it all that I copied just the pages I needed for now (Ichabod & Josephine). Just by browsing through the notes Ichabod & Solomon are used so many times my eyes hurt. They definitely liked to reuse certain names. I have not had a chance to review the info too much because of some family obligations, but I'm hoping to begin typing up all of my notes soon. I suppose that's what winter is for. Hope to keep in touch.
