Re: Descendants of Isaac W and Jane Sarena Oliphant Hazelwood

The Nashville Christian Advocate reported that J W Hazlewood of the Coffee County Guards died in Camp Snead (could be Sneed) Hospital on September 11, 1861. A descendant of Serena thinks that he died early in the war, from measles. Camp Snead is, near Knoxville, TN. An inquiry to the Confederate Cemetery Mabry-Hazen Foundation. did not show anything on Isaac, but the contact said that they had many unmarked graves.
It is possible that Isaac W was the son of Blany Hazelwood, since the oldest son was probably named Thomas Blany, and his maternal grandfather was Thomas Oliphant. However, he is usually not listed with Blany descendants. The supplement to the 1810 VA census lists Blany Hazelwood there, in Grayson County. He had 1 thithable, no slaves that were old enough to be taxed (probably no slaves), and one horse.
Isaac and his oldest son, Thomas B. Hazelwood joined the Confederate army on 8/5/1861 and mustered into service at Camp Sneed in Knoxville TN. They were assigned to Company "G" which was nicknamed the "Coffee County Guards". Isaac was 37 years and a Sergeant. Their regiment was designated the 34th Regiment Tennesse Infantry by the Confederate and as Churchwell's Regiment Volunteers. They were under the command of Captain John F. Ross. Isaac died only a month after his enlistment. I will try to find a better reference on the Isaac death item or find it on line and sent the site. As for family research, all of Isaac and Jane’s children are accounted for except Mary Elizabeth.

On Oliphant, I have quite a bit on that line. Hope you get time to work on genealogy soon. Thanks for all the information.
Betty
Dear Betty,

The information I have is that Isaac W. died in 1861 in a prison camp OR did he die IN camp. Do you know of a source for this information? You mention death information online from Nashville Christian Herald publications. Can you tell me where to find this?

It has been years since I have corresponded with anyone who is descended from Isaac W. and Jane Serena. From all the good information and pictures online at Ancestry I guess there must be several of Isaac's descendants researching now.

Gail

Betty,
Please forgive the typos in the previous message. I meant to hit "preview" rather than "post". I just realized I didn't list a birthplace for Joshua. Although my database just says "Virginia" (based on the 1850 and 1860 Grainger County census),Joshua Hazelwood was probably born in Grayson County, Virginia. I have that your Isaac was the first child born Jefferson County, Tennessee, but I need to rework my data on this family.

Re: how many men was Isabella Oliphant was the "relict" of. I have been reviewing my correspondence from other Hazelwood researchers years ago. Some researchers have it that Isablla was married to George Hazelwood before she married Joshua. I have NOT located a record for this marriage. As far as I can see Isabella had only two husbands, BUT I could be wrong.

Some researchers say that Blany was married before (possibly twice). This is possible considering the age difference, but I don't think so. If so there were apparently no children born of this marriage or these marriages. Granted that there is some difference in Blany and Catherine's ages and admittedly I have never found a marriage record for Blany and Catherine, I still think that all of the children were by his marriage to Catherine. However, I just thought I should give you this "contrary" information. I do pay attention to contrary data.

Gail

Betty,
I don't have a great deal of time here, but I will explain the Oliphant connection. I am assuming the Isabella you are asking about is Isabella Oliphant Hazelwood Howell your Jane Sarena's sister??? (I would be glad to send you information on her SIL, my great great grandmother Isabella Ivy if you are interested).

Anyway here goes. Although I don't have this in my database (I try to check everything out first), I have that Jane Sarena and Isabella were the daughters of Thomas Oliphant and Hannah Morrow. I think there is some pretty good online information on the Oliphants and the Morrows if you want to check this out.

Isabella Oliphant was born 15 November 1804 (the date is from her tombstone in Economy Cemtery, Morristown, Hamblen County, Tennessee). According to the census her birthplace was Tennessee. I think she was quite likely born in Greene County, but you might want to check this out with Oliphant researchers.

She married Joshua Hazelwood son of Blany and Catherine ? Hazelwood 11 December 1828 in Greene County, Tennessee.

Joshua was born 31 March 1808 and died 15 May 1862 In Grainger County, Tennessee (present day Hamblen Couny which was formed from parts of Grainger and Jefferson County in 1870). The is from transcriptions of his tombstone in Economy Cemetery. The DOD should be accurate based upon the date when his will was filed.

Isabella married her second husband, Jesse Caleb Howell, son of my 4th great grandmother Jane Howell Ivey or Ivy's brother Caleb Howell and Priscilla Hodge, 15 March 1867 in Grainger County.

Many years ago when I was working on the Howells I realized that Jesse's tombstone in Economy Cemetery was mis transcribed since there is no way he died in 1822. Jesse and Isabella were still listed on the 1870 census. This is not a criticism of the work of the Hamblen County Genealogy Society who did the most recent transcription of this cemetery. I suspect that some of the old stones are getting pretty difficult to read. The date I have for Jesse's death is 24 February 1871. I just checked this ou in case this is a WEG based on what Jesse's tombstone SHOULD have said. It has been many long years since I have done any serious work on the Howells. Anyway the source I have listed is the earlier WPA transcription.

Isabella died 03 January 1880 in Hamblen County and is buried in Economy Cemetery.

"Isabel Hazelwood 15 November 1804-03 January 1880". This DOD should be correct. Her obituary appeared 07 January 1880 in the Morristown Gazette.
The following is NOT from the original obituary. The sources I used are a book Hamblen and Nearby Deaths and Hamblen County Heritage, the journal of the Hamblen County Genealogy Society. "Mrs. Isabella Howell, relict of Jesse Howell, died last Friday night at her residence in the County. She was an aged estimable lady".

The Maguire site by Irish2Irish is a good source. Jane lived her last years with her daughter Adda, who married Patric Maguire, and they settled in Oklahoma. Jane and Pat are both buried in an Intertribal cemetery near Apache. The story is she was good to the Indians and they let her be buried there. MaGuires still in area. I was there in June and saw the headstone. My great grandfather John Hazelwood (le) was a son of Jane and Isaac. We found Isaac's death onlne, from Nashville Christian Herald publications. It is J W, tail on the I- too long somewhere. Have seen your Isabella Hazelwood, also Joshua and Blany, but we have not been able to connect except that Joshua wed an Oliphant. Don't be redfaced. An Oliphant connection besides Jane? Betty Swaim

Dear fellow researcher,
Isaac W. Hazelwood was my great great grandmother, Isabella Catherine Hazelwood Ivy's brother. I have had no time to do any research lately, but I found your post searching on Grainger County, Tennessee.. I think :):):).

I went to Ancestry to try and locate this information. My search turned up nothing. Can you please tell me how you found the tombstone data? Like I said I haven't had much time for research recently, but I would like to print out the information and put it in the file I have on Issac W. and Jane Serena's family if nothing else.

I would like to pretend that that I was a "newbie" to the web or genealogy or even to Ancestry, but this is NOT so. I feel pretty embarrassed, but I absolutely cannot locate this information. I would really appreciate your help.

Gail (really, realy red faced here)

Hi, Margaret Admundson posted this information on Genforum: July 06, 2004
She states, "I have only done one article on the Catlett family. It was published in The Virginia Genealogists and deals with a second Thomas Catlett who married Frances, the daughter of Mary Hazilwood. Mary named her two grandson in her 1710 Middlesex Co. VA will."

Margaret told more about this family in a post on August 28, 2002, vis:
"There was a Thomas [CATLETT]who appears in the records of Lancaster Co. beginning about 1702. He was married to Frances, the daughter of Mary Haislewood who died 1710 Middlesex County, VA. Mary names two grandsons Thomas and William Catlett in his will. This Thomas died in 1713 when Frances his wife becomes administrator of his extate. Noting further is found in the records on the son Thomas, but William does appear in the records there. The age of Thomas as implied by the records makes him the right age to be a son of Nicholas although David was his heir at law."

I may be related to this Thomas Catlett and would be interested in corresponding with you or anyone who has an interest in following this line. Best Wishes, Carma@infoplatter.com

Looking for information on the descendants of Greenville Hazelewood (or Hazlewood) and his wife Mary Ann Clare of Virginia who came to Davis County, Iowa in the mid 1800s. Two of their sons married Awalt women. Charles B. Hazlewood married Mattie Awalt and moved to Stafford County Texas. Their son, Oscar W, moved to Sedgwick County, Kansas and is found with his family in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records there.
Looking for bios, cemetery records, obits, birth/death/marriage info on this family. Willing to share. Below is the bio for Greenville Hazelwood that appears in Davis County, Iowa....interesting fact: at the time the bio is published in 1882 his wife has been dead 7 years. He has remarried, but makes no mention of the new wife in the bio!:

HAZLEWOOD, GREENVILLE,
proprietor of Hazlewood harness shop Bloomfield; was born in October, 1813, at Lynchburg,Virginia. At twelve years of age he went to Samuel Schoolfield as an apprentice for eight years. Then he came to Salem, Indiana, and for twelve years engaged in harness making. Coming to Iowa in the fall of 1849, he settled in this county. From 1849 to 1861 he was farming and milling in West Grove township, then coming to this city he has been in the harness busines ever since. By good work and fair dealing he has acquired a large trade, amounting last year to$10,000. He was married in June, 1832,to Mary Clare, of Virginia, and they have had ten children: Ann R., George C., Grenville, Jr., now in business with his father, Josiah C., Charles B., David and four deceased, Robert, Henry, John M., and Mary L. Mr. H. is a Mason and a worthy member of the Christian church. Thee of his sons were in the army, Greenville, Jr., enlisted October 16, 1862,as a bugler, company A, third Iowa cavalry, mustered out in August, 1865; G. C. enlisted August 1, 1861, as sergeant company E, mustered out in August, 1864; J. M., enlisted in August,1861, bugler, company A, mustered out August, 1865.

This is a correction to my posting yesterday.
The Alice I Hazelwood-Jones found in 1930 census in OK is not the same person as Irene A Hazelwood, daughter of Joseph Lee and Lucy Hazelwood (who does appears in 1930 census in California as Irene Amy Lombard).
Therefore, the Lucy Hazelwood, widow, who is mother-in-law, in the OK 1930 census is not the Lucy Codling Hazelwood who married Joseph Lee Hazelwood. Both women were born in Missouri and were about the same age.
New task - determine who the Oklahoma Lucy Hazelwood and her daughter Alice I were, and where Lucy Codling Hazelwood was, altho it seems likely she died before 1910.
Thanks to Findingmom for providing the married names of the Joseph Lee & Lucy Hazelwood daughters.

By the way, another person is researching descendents of the Lee Hazelwood born Feb 1853, Missouri, who married Sarah S. Bufford. That family also ended up in Oklahoma mostly and some of their sons (one named Lee) in California. I believe her Lee and your Joseph Lee are first cousins, again I have been unable to prove some of their ancestor relationships.
I think I still have her email if you are interested, let me know at flynduck@yahoo.com and I'll look through my files.

Hi: I can't help with descendents other than to say I believe there is a 5th child -- Mamie P., born about 1879, she is listed as 7 mos in 1880 census and as 22 in the 1900 census. All of the ages appear off in the 1900 census.
How certain is the birth date for Ada M? You have it as Sept 1880, yet she is in the 1880 census as being 2 years of age. On the other hand, she is listed as 20 in 1990 and her sister Mamie as 22, so it is possible the census taker in 1880 reversed the ages for Ada and Mamie, but if Ada wasn't born until Sep 1880, she still should not have appeared in the 1880 census. A puzzle.
In 1930 Lucy Hazelwood is widowed mother-in-law in home of daughter Alice Irene and husband Alvin Jones and their seven children in Adair, Mayes, OK. You have her name as Irene Amy, but it is surely the same person as Alice I.
Is the son, Joseph L, named Joseph Lee Jr, do you know.

I'm researching the ancestors of Joseph Lee -- if you have any information about his parents, grandparents, please email me at flynduck@yahoo.com . I believe both his parents died between 1850-1860 and Lee was raised by an aunt but I've been unable to find any records pertaining to their death or to prove relationship to Joseph Lee.

Hazelwood-Cogle connection

(Crossposting on Cogle board)
I have an interesting tangle I was hoping someone might be able to help me unweave, though it appears this board is not currently active.
Mahala Cogle (b. 3 March 1826 d. 16 March 1897) married Randolph Hazelwood Jr. in Lincoln County, Kentucky. They moved to Missouri and had several children. One child was Nancy Margaret Hazelwood (b. 1856 d. 1943). Nancy married William Franklin Hiatt (b. in Lincoln County, Kentucky 1851 d. Johnson County, Ks in 1931). The interesting thing I've come across is that it appears that William Hiatt's mother was a Cogle who lived in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Her name was Euphrema Cogle and she was married to George W. Hiatt.
I'd like to be able to untangle these relationships, if there's anyone out there with this information please email me or reply on this list. Thank you.
Clifford is one of those mystery's. I believe that your clif and my John Hazelwood might of been brothers. They were both born around 1785. They were both born in Virginia then became Kentucky. They never really moved, just the state lines/ They are both in census in Grant Co, Kentucky. The only Hazelwoods.
If they are brothers, parents still working on that. Good Luck
Jewell Burcham

hazelwood-stephens connection

I have a record from Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, for Margaret Zenicia Madison (daughter of Rancil Madison and Maggie McKim). She is buried in the Stephens plot, which is unusual. Also, several of the names in the plot have the middle name Jefferson, which seems to tie into my family somehow--one of my grandfather's uncles was named Thomas Jefferson Stehens Atkins.

The Zenicia ties in with my gggrandmother, Margaret Zonecia Hazelwood--she married an Atkins.

Would anyone have any idea how these names are connected?

Perhaps this is a clue that will give you some direction. In looking at the Revolutionary War pension application for Thomas Tanner of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, found at Footnote.com, a woman named Ann Bennett gave a deposition stating that she was present at the marriage of Thomas Tanner and Elizabeth Murphy on 5 February 1779 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Interestingly, she further states the names of others who were present one of whom was Cliff Hazlewood. This marriage took place in the home of Thomas Rogers, according to George Rogers who also gave a deposition. Was Cliff Hazlewood related to this family in some way?
