Ruth A. Hazen, age 82 of West Springfield, Pa., died Saturday evening, January 31, 2009 at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa. Ruth was born on May 25, 1926 in Conneaut, Ohio, the daughter of the late Clyde and Mabel (Blakeslee) Smith. Ruth graduated from Rowe High School in Conneaut, Ohio and became very industrious. Her first job after high school was working as a Dental Assistant then she married her love, Donald "Gus" Hazen on August 5, 1949, after which she went to work at Marx Toys in Girard. She also worked at the Peggy Gray Candy Store in North Springfield where she worked as a candy dipper for many years and also served time at the North Springfield Post Office as their Postmaster. Ruth had a deep love for cooking and also ran a catering business out of her home when she wasn’t working for someone else. Ruth was a very social person as well. She was an avid member of the Springfield Women’s Club and past President of the Springfield School PTA. Ruth and Gus attended the Federated Church where they together attended the Senior Center on Tuesdays and she served as the Church Librarian and taught Sunday School. Ruth will always be remembered for her piano and organ playing, her cooking, stories, original poetry, jokes, limerick, faith in God and her exceptional gift of hospitality. Her family members are proud of the gifts and traditions she has passed on to them. Although, her raspberry pies, popcorn, coffee creamer eyes and Christmas grab bags will always be her unique legacy. Besides her parents, Ruth is preceded in death by three brothers Ernest, Charles and Alvin Smith; two sisters Irene Fralic and Charlotte Anderson; and a son-in-law, Bill Bonnett. Ruth is survived by her husband of almost 60 years this year, Gus Hazen; three daughters Theresa A. Bonnett of Girard, Pa., Judy E. Keefer and her husband, Dayle and Dawn A. Keefer and her husband, Richard both of Jamestown, Pa.; and a sister Needa Simmons of Conneaut, Ohio.
She is blessed to have known and loved 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to call at the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home at 11883 Main St., E. Springfield, Pa. on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend Life Celebration Services at the Federated Church on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ed Huntley, officiating.
