According to Prof. Daniel N. Rolph - Descendant - and information he posted with the Indiana County History Preservation Society: He lived in Ripley County many years, fought with the Kentucky Volunteers in the Battle of the Fallen Timbers in 1794, served in the Indiana Militia in Dearborn Co., Indiana during the War of 1812, and was wounded, according to his pension application. He later died in Wayne County, Iowa. This was found in a search for his father James Rolf. It contains limited info. on his brothers Asa and James Jr.
http://www.countyhistory.com/ripley/ourstories/040.htm
Richard Chambers - also a distant descendant.
Great to hear from you Bob. My grandfather was "Bob" also and so is my uncle. I would like advice as to how to access the Hazen Family website. Please advise if you would be so kind. My grandfather was born in North Dakota where they migrated to Wisconsin - Prairie Du Chien. He wound up coming to Fort Dix NJ during WWI and it was in NJ that he met my grandmother. My line goes - Joan (my mother) - Robert Hazen - George Hazen, Samuel Hazen , Aaaron Hazen, Abraham Hazen, John Hazen, Thomas Hazen, John Hazen, Edward Hazen (I went past that a bit but that is where is starts in America as we know). Through Tracey Elliot Hazen's impeccable research I was able to discover that my great-great-great grandfather was Aaron Hazen was married to Margaret Cooke who was a descendant of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. This established a genealogical link to other Mayflower passengers and their descendants. As a Colonial history buff, I found this thrilling. I was also delighted to discover that Thomas Hazen, grandson of the famous first arrival Edward, served in the Revolutionary War along with two of his sons. What an illustrious history the Hazen's have!

Hello Anita,

It will be interesting to see where you connect to the Hazen lineage. My grandfather is list in The Hazen Family in America also.

I'm on Sharon's site. It's been a little slow recently, so a new member would be good. When you get there, be sure to read about the California and Washington Hazens that got together via the internet. My above-mentioned Grandpa had three wives and the descendants of the 3rd marriage didn't know about each other until recently.

Bob Hazen

Hi Sharon. I would love to visit the Hazen family website. Please advise how to do so. My mother was a Hazen. I have read applicable facts in the Hazen Family in America but have heard that it has been updated and I would really like to see the new information. My grandparents and their oldest child is listed in the book but not my mother as she hadn't been born I suppose at that time. Thanks for your response!

Thank you for your note. My maiden name is Hazen. The family is very large here in the US. If you would like to see some of the info, I can invite you to the Hazen family web site. What I will need is your name and e-mail address. It is completely safe. One of the site members has downloaded the book, "Hazens of America". You can click on those and see more, a lot more. I have the book, myself. My father's name is listed there as a child. My e-mail address is fleurish335@q.com.....

Regards, Sharon / Oregon
I am very interested in this websit.

My ancestor was Samuel Albert Hazen born 7 June 1855 near Oak Forest, in Franklin Co., IN (some people have said born in Ohio)and died 28 Mar 1931 in Fairfax, Osage, OK. Samuel Hazen married Emily Lanning born in 1853 in Indiana and got married in IN, daughter of James Lanning (born 1825 in NJ and died 1900 in Burlington, Carol, IN) and Arvilla Mathews (1827-1900), d/o John Mathews and Phoebe Pond.

Samuel Hazen was the son of John Hazen and an unknown woman. He had one older sister named Mary Ellen Hazen who married William Smith in Brookville, IN and lived in Connersville, IN until their deaths.

Samuel Hazen and his sister Mary Ellen Hazen Smith were raised by two sisters of John Townsend Hazen in or near Brookville, Indiana. He never acknowledged these children as his. There were no other John Hazen's in Indiana during that time frame, according to any of the US census reports, so it is assumed he fathered these children. Also, Mary Ellen Hazen Smith's obit listed as her father a John Hazen. She lived and died in IN.

If anyone can assist with clarifying the parentage of these children, I would consider it a huge help.

Thanks,

Robert Awalt
San Diego
connectom@yahoo.com

Rachel Hazen (m George Franklin)

I just tried to email Walter Hazen, source of much of my online information on Rachel, but as I don't see any recent online activity for him I thought I would post my query to this message board as well:

I am a descendant of Rachel Hazen (m George Franklin)

I have recently found mention of Rachel in the descriptions of her under the entries for Daniel Hazen, her father, and (John?) William Franklin, her father-in-law, in the book: Pioneer sketches of Long Point Settlement by E A Owen. Is anyone on these boards familiar with this title? It is available online here:

http://www.archive.org/details/pioneersketcheso00owenuoft

It seems to mention that George Franklin is the son of William Franklin, and the sketch appears to be written by his grandson and published in 1898, so I'm wondering whether it might be more reliable than Tracy Elliot Hazen's work? His grandson would have been born after his grandfather died, but it appears lived in his homestead and was proud of his grandfather. I don't fully understand Tracy Elliot Hazen's source methods for his tome.

It may be that William was John William or some such, which is how I now have him in my tree.

I am familiar with the work published by Ross W McCurdy which mentions those names for George's parents, but being a relatively recent work it must be derivative of Tracy Elliot Hazen.

The sketch for William Franklin seems to imply that he was not a loyalist, as stated in Ross McCurdy's work, but in fact was a patriot who came to Canada for reasons of opportunity.

My next step is to try for the authors of the ancestral file on familysearch.org . Their names appear to be:

MARGARET STOWE READ
910 WEST NIDO AVNEUE
MESA AZ
USA 85210

CAROLYN ACKLEY
P O BOX 1513
HOLLISTER CA
USA 95024

BENJAMIN W. FRANKLIN
27226 BAREFOOT LN SE
BONITA SPRINGS FL
USA 34135

I don't know which was the original researcher whom I should contact first? I don't know whether any of these keep a current online presence with their research.

Cheers,

Kim

Re: James Hazen

Hi Sharon,

I am a Hazen descendant and would love to be on your invited list. Have been having a heck of a time connecting my people with yours and other Hazen's.

My g-grandfather is not listed with other Hazen families in Indiana, but he is connected. His name was Samuel Albert Hazen (born 7 June 1855 IN and died 28 Mar 1931 in Fairfax, Osage, OK). He married Emily Mae Lanning who grew up in Franklin Co. and moved to Carrol Co, IN, d/o James Lanning and Aravilla Mathews.

Samuel A. Hazen was raised in IN (possibly in Brookville) by his aunt Rebecca Hazen, sister of John Townsend Hazen. Samuel's sister, Mary Ellen Hazen (Smith), a few years older than Samuel, was raised by another Hazen aunt who was another sister of John T. Hazen, in Brookville, IN (I believe John T's sister's married name was White). Mary Ellen Hazen is listed in one of the census with this family.

John T. Hazen is listed in the marriage index as having first married in 1856-7, after Samuel Albert Hazen was born. I believe he was around 30, old for a first marriage in those times. It is plausible that he had a previous marriage. Otherwise, where did Mary Ellen and Samuel Hazen come from?

John T. Hazen's will listed all children except for Samuel and Mary Ellen. Mary Ellen's death cert listed John T. Hazen as her father, but her mother was not listed. I have copies if anybody wants to take a look.

To date, I have been unable to find any information on who the mother of Mary Ellen and Samuel A. Hazen was. There appears to be no written accounts, no grave marker, no family bible information; maybe she died in child birth with Samuel?; she could have been unmarried, although I doubt it given the religious behaviors in the community; she could have run away; or perhaps she was insane and put away in an asylum some place secret? I have not, until now, considered the last possibility and would not even know where to begin looking?

If anyone has any information at all on these people, I would apprecdiate hearing from you.

Thanks,
Robert Awalt
connectom@yahoo.com

Stanley Hazen has updated the Hazen family history and has visited me. We keep in touch.

Please let me know about your website.
Great Idea! I am with you. It is so strange because I thought my Uncle Robert Hazen was the last of the Hazen line. My mother Joan was a Hazen, descendant of Robert E. Hazen. Now, through research, I have found that there are SO many Hazens out there and it is delighful and intriguing and I am so interested to discover how we are all related and the history of the Hazens and how we are all intertwined. The Hazens have a very rich and great history that we all should be proud of. I certainly am! A National website would be awesome and I will do whatever I can to assist. - Anita

Hello "Cousin" Sharon! I am delighted to hear from you! Again, I have always thought we were the last of the Hazen line but have come to know that there is a giant family out there and we are all related! I would love to know how we are related and I have no doubt that we are. Please email me at thedalee3@yahoo.com. I am very interested in all genealogy and particularly the Hazens. They are certainly a family that is rich in history! I do have some "blanks" in my story though which is why I search. My mother was Joan Ann Hazen, daugher of Robert E. Hazen and Agnes Hazen. Robert was the son of George Hazen and Dorothy Degnan. My grandfather was born in New Rock or Jamestown, ND and lived of course in Wisconsin as well which is a hotbed of Hazen history. He came to New Jersey when he enlisted in WWI and then met my grandmother. Any Hazen facts you have to share I'm game! Thanks for your response and I very much look forward to hearing from you! - Sincerely - Anita

However, I have put one up, "Hazen's Now" and hope for it to eventually become a geneology source for all Hazens......Are you interesed in me putting you on so you can access it? We are running kind of slow, but will pick back up again. My goal is to find as many of us as possible to continue the information collected in the "Hazen's of America"....do you have access to that book......

Sharon Hazen Hall / Oregon

I will invite you to the site. See what you think. I am also collecting vintage photos of Hazens and am hoping to compile them in a book for all of us to have. Some of the photos I have do have information about the person. with a bit of research, I hope to make the book quite fine with relatives of ours. I see that I don't have your e-mail address. It is needed for me to invite you to the site. Please be assured that it is safe and secure and legitimate....

Sincerely.......Sharon Hazen Hall

Thank you for your offer. I have the book too, My children call it "THE BOOK".......would you be interested in joining a group of us on the "Hazens Now" web site that I have set up? My plan is to gather as much info as I can and eventually have it published for all of us. Also I am collecting vintage photos of Hazens to someday put that in a wonderful book with pictures and information about each person. We can also include somewhere grave markers, etc.

Sincerely, Cousin Sharon / Oregon
