You might like to look at:

Charles HEALD, christened at Wakefield in Yorkshire on 18 March 1802, son of Thomas HEALD and Mary (maiden name SENIOR, married 25 May 1786).

Charles married Sophia REDMORE at Sculcoates (now part of Hull) on 17 March 1822, and they had children:

* Edward Redmoor HEALD, bapt. 1 Sept 1823, a shipwright in 1881

* Mary Senior HEALD, bapt. 23 May 1825, married Richard GOWER 11 August 1846

* Thomas George HEALD, bapt. 27 Dec 1827, a master plumber and glazier in 1881.

* Charles Broadley HEALD, bapt. 21 Aug 1829, a joiner in 1881.

There's an LDS ancestral file record on him,
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/af/individual_record....

and at least two descendent researchers,

* Angela Chapman (achapman10 -at- aol.com)

* Peter Bramley (fascination_uk -at- yahoo.co.uk)

although I don't know if those emails are still current.

It is possible that there were other HEALDs in Hull more recently than that, though I don't know of any that match. But I don't think there were any HEALDs there much earlier than this. I don't know if this fits the time period you were looking for, but hope it helps.

Hi

I was wondering if you had found out the information that you required regarding the Heald family. I live in Leeds and
have found out that Gt Gt Gt Grandmother was called Heald
before she became a Dockray. She was born around 1811 in
Holbeck Leeds. Does this have any connection to your Heald's.

Thanks

Julie

EDWIN WILSON HEALD

Edwin W. Heald, resident of Philadelphia, was a friend of Dr. John Commodor Street. Dr. Street WILLED HIS BODY to his friend, Edwin Heald, so that it would be properly cremated. He also willed two crystal balls and the contents of his safe to Mr. Heald. This was in August of 1905, when Dr. Street died (in Orange, New Jersey.) I am interested in obtaining those crystal balls, if the family still has them and is willing to part with them. Also, if there is any other material from the safe that would be of interest. These items will be duly preserved, as they belonged to one of the first monks of the Ramakrishna Order in America and have some historical value to that organization.

I've had a quick look at the Census and FreeBMD, and while I can't see anything appropriate for a Horace Heald, there is a Harold Heald who appears to match.

Harold Temple Heald is registered at Sheffield in Jan/Mar 1887, GRO reference 9c 4__

He appears, aged 4, on the 1891 census RG12/3821 fol 5; and aged 14 on the 1901 census, at RG13/4367 fol 12.

Parents are Robert Emmet Temple HEALD (b. Q3 1846, GRO 22 651) and Matilda THOMAS (m. Q4 1872, GRO 9c 506); siblings were Gertrude (1874), George (1876), Rosetta, Gilbert, and Emily (1889).

The family were painters, decorators and French polishers.

Harold appears to have married Harriett UNDERWOOD in Oct-Dec 1915, registered at Ecclesall Bierlow, 9c 904.

FreeBMD doesn't appear to contain a Q2 1917 death record for either Harold or Horace. (But then, perhaps it wouldn't, if he was Missing in Action, overseas).
I think I'm now a bit closer to seeing what's going on.

As you indicated, Elspeth is there on the 1901 census aged 39, at 30 Albert Street, Hebburn, married to Charles (40), with sons Robert (18), Ernest (13) and Albert (1), and daughters Alice (11), Sophia (9), Charlotte (6) and Caroline (4).

Again, pretty much as you said, the two had married on or about 11 Oct 1880, at Walker in Northumberland, part of the Tynemouth registration district.

But according to both the IGI (http://www.familysearch.org/) and FreeBMD (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/) her surname was HEARLD, with an extra 'R', not HEALD -- which is why I missed it earlier: I hadn't thought till now to be tracking Hearld as a surname spelling.

Interestingly, the IGI (based on the church registers) gives her full name as ELSPETH RAMSEY ROBERTSON HEARLD (rather than Roberta), and names her father as JOHN HEARLD.

FreeBMD (based on the civil registration) gives her name as ELSPETH RAMSEY R HEARLD, which could be either. I don't know whether a copy of the full marriage certificate would have the full name, but it might.

There are a few HEARLDs in the records, some even apparently consistently; and there definitely people around now with the surname HEARLD; but on a quick search, I haven't seen any apparent birth, baptism or census records for ELSPETH HEARLD. Curiously, I didn't even find anything for ELSPETH HERALD, which I would have thought would be the most likely mis-spelling or mistranscription.

So any more you can find out about Elspeth's family origins would be very interesting!

All best,

James Heald
http://www.healds.org.uk

Hi Miriam,

I'm probably not a blood relative, but I have a website (http://www.healds.org.uk/) where I have tried to track some of the different Heald families in the U.K., up to 1900.

I was wondering, could you tell us a bit more about Elspeth?

As you can see from the 1881 Census, http://www.healds.org.uk/census/misc1881.html#SCT there were a handful of Heald families in Scotland in 1881, but really very few.

Elspeth is of course not there as a Heald on the 1881 Census, having got married the year before. But I have been having a bit of trouble trying to identify her or her family.

Your STUBBS/HEALD wedding doesn't appear to be indexed on either http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ which has the official Scottish records from 1855 to 1931, nor www.freebmd.org.uk which indexes the official English records.

Also, neither site seems to have a birth record for any Elspeth Heald; and there seems to be no Elspeth Heald in either the Scottish or the English censuses for 1851, 1861 or 1871 on either the Scotland's People site, or www.ancestry.com

So she seems to be quite a mystery!

Is there anything else you can tell us about her?

Best regards,

James Heald.
http://www.healds.org.uk/
Civil War Navy Officer, Edward Heald.

A fellow Civil War researcher recently passed on a copy of a photo of Edward Heald, who had been a carpenter in the Confederate Navy, during the Civil War. Edward served on the CSS RAPPAHANNOCK, and may have moved to Australia after the war, as his grandson, who owned the original CDV of Edward, as well as some buttons from his Naval uniform, was residing near Brisbane, in the late 1960's, but has now passed on. Unfortunately, not much data was obtained from the grandson, about Edward, before he passed away.
If anyone can assist with additional data on Edward Heald, and his subsequent whereabouts, I would very much appreciate such information. Thank you for any help.

HEALD, Benjamin, abt 1780-1847 NH & Maine

RE: HEALD [Held, Hale], Benjamin, abt 1780-1847 NH & Maine

Searching for information on the families of Benjamin Heald (abt 1780-1847), son of Amos Heald (1749-1836) and his first wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Davis, who lived in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, and Anson, Somerset County, Maine. His father Amos Heald was born in Townsend, Middlesex, MA, son of Ephraim Heald (b 1710/11 in Concord MA and Elinor Robbins), and Amos Heald died in 1836 in Anson, Maine.

Benjamin Heald married (1) 13 Sept 1802, Anson, Somerset, Maine, to Betsy TAYLOR [need further details on Betsy Taylor]

1810 census of Somerset County, Maine living in Anson shows
Benjamin Heald with 2 females under age of 10 years [born 1803-1810]. Who were these daughters?

Known children of Benjamin Heald and Betsy Taylor Heald:

John Heald, born 1811/1812 [census records], Anson, Somerset, Maine – identified as Col. John Heald in some records; married 4 Sept 1831 in Anson ME to Emily Gilman; died about 1901 in Anson.

Reuben Heald, born 1815 [consistent age in census records], Anson, Somerset, Maine; md 19 June 1836 in Anson to Hannah Waterman; died 22 Feb 1891 in Anson and bur in Gilman-Heald cemetery, Anson, Maine

Daniel Heald ? – no dates and no further information

Francis Heald—said to be a female – no dates and no further information

Death date of first wife Elizabeth /Betsy Davis Heald unknown, but Benjamin married again in 1823:

Benjamin Heald and Ruth Briggs were married 31 Mar 1823 in Phillips, Franklin County, Maine
Ruth Briggs was a widow [perhaps of Samuel Briggs] and it is believed that her maiden surname was Smith. She is said to have been born 15 Aug 1795. She had at least one BRIGGS son- William Briggs born abt 1822.

Children of this 2nd marriage of Benjamin Heald adn Rugh Smith Briggs:

Ephriam Heald, born abt 1828, Anson, Somerset, Maine

Mary Ann Heald born abt 1832, Anson, Somerset, Maine
[It is said but cannot be verified that Mary Ann married James Simmons and died abt 1865]

You can find Ruth Heald and one Briggs son and these two Heald children in 1850 and 1860 census records, but the records are so corrupted that you must understand them to recognize them. In 1850, the recorder transposed the age for Ruth Heald and made her age 35 instead of age 53 – but in the 1860 census she is correctly listed as age 63. Ages of the children vary in the two censuses…. (Which of course was not uncommon among the citizens of that day- most of whom did not read and write.)

Benjamin Heald died 26 Feb 1847 in Anson, Somerset, Maine, and is buried in the Dinsmore / Heald Cemetery near Anson, Maine.
Please note: I have a photo of his tombstone taken in Nov 2007, and it very clearly states his death as 26 Feb 1847, age 66 years and 10 months. And this is the death date confirmed in probate records (but no will has been found to exist.)
However, there is a transcribed cemetery record for him that incorrectly lists his death date as 1817 but correctly lists his age as on the tombstone.

This is one interesting source for the children of Benjamin Heald and his first wife:
"forms" photocopied which state "Please given family records for the history of the town of Anson, Maine.... and return to V. D. Hilton, North Anson, Maine... [no date ]- this is from files of ELN, obtained in 1977s when visiting Maine and probably from the Maine Historical Society ; phocopied then]
One family is that of Reuben Heald born 1815, Anson; son of Benjamin Heald;
and Reuben's wife is Hannah Waterman. she was born in Anson in 1807 and died Feb 22, 1897, age 90 years it says... no death date for him nor marriage... he was a farmer--and it gives 6 children for him... but does not say who is filling it out!! [This family can be found in census records.]
There is another one titled "The family of Reuben Heald's parents" Benjamin Heald, farmer--no other information-- then for children it lists 3:
Reuben, Col John, Francis

Some other secondary records include Daniel as a child, but none that are trustworthy. I especially want to know more of the daughters who were born before 1810. I think I know the identity of one of those daughters, but desire any information on these families, with sources.

Will exchange information. Thank you.

Elizabeth L. Nichols
nicholsel@msn.com

Re: George Heald and Mary Heald nee Northrup

Additional information on the above post.

I recently got a certificate for my GGGrandfather Joseph Henry Heald, who lived in Brooklyn, NY . Born 1842 NY, Died 1882 NY. He was a painter. He lists his mother as Mary Northrup and father as George Heald. I estimate they were both born about 1800 +/- . The only George and Mary I have been able to find were located in Maine, but the person who has that tree has not responded to me. Does anyone have any Northrup information that may include these 2 people? The son, Joseph Henry Heald married a Margaretta Johnson (Foster--1st marriage I think) and they had at least 2 children...Josephine Dawson Heald, and Mary E or Margaretta Heald. All lived in NY, however I only know George and Mary were born in the USA...I do not know what state, but likely in the northeast area. Any info/help anyone can give me is sincerely appreciated. I have lots of info on the family after 1842, but no info On Joseph's parents other than their names. Thank you

Joyce

George Heald and Mary Heald nee Northrup

Seeking information on the above. The only concrete information I have to date is about thier son, Joseph Henry Heald, B-1842, NY, married Margaretta Foster nee Johnson. He cites in 1870 census that his parents are not foreign born. He cites that HE was born in NY. He is a civil war veteran (documented by pension records and also newspaper notice of his death in 1882)...I have no idea where his father George Heald and mother Mary Heald (nee Northrup) may have lived. I have found some information on a family in Mass that dates etc seem to fit, but do not see Joseph listed--however he would have been old enough to be on his own by then....the 1840 census finds a George Heald in NY but other than that is pretty much useless...it does note a male child who would match in age.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how I can "tie down" just who george is, where he lived etc etc. I have found a family tree that may correspond, buthave no concrete info leading me there...

Any help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you.

Joyce
