Re roscoejr48's query of Elijah Hearn .... I have found a Elijah Quinton Hearn in Wood County on 1910 census ... he died Oct. 1, 1950 in Wood Cty., Texas. 1930 Mineola, (Wood Cty) Texas census shows Elijah Q(uinton), wife, Zona, children Gerald C., Quinton, and H. Josephine. I have not found them on 1920 census as of yet. this
Elijah Hearn states his parents born in Mississippi which means that yours is another line and not the Elijah J. Hearn son of Elijah G and Sarah Hardin Hearn(e).

Could this be the Elijah you are looking for?

And, re the immigration from Ireland and the potato famime, I also heard that story as a child. It turned out not to be true as my research shows family was in US long before 1845 - the year the "blight of unusual character" devastated Ireland's potato crop.

I see you are replying to a message posted in year 2000. I am not sure how many involved in research on Eligah and Sarah Hearn(e) are still on this board. I am one of the Arkansas "connections", my cousin, Mary Luan Hearn Moore being the primary Arkansas researcher.

Re Eligah G. Hearn(e) and Sarah, his wife. Your Eligah J. could be their son, born abt. 1831 in Alabama, married Texanna Mickelborough 6 Dec 1856 Grimes Co, TX. There is also speculation he had a 2nd wife. 1880 Bell Cty Tx Census shows him with wife Mary A., children Horace, Norman, Annie and Alabama. 1910 Dallas Cty TX shows him in household of daughter Alabama Newland and husband, Otto L. Newland. This Eligah J. Hearne(e) enlisted in the confederacy, 33rd Texas Calvary (Duff's Partisan Rangers) Co.K as Private. I have his pension file somewhere!!

My great-great-grandfather was Benjamin Hardy Hearn (1820 GA - 1908 AR), 2nd oldest son of Eligah G. and Sarah Hearn. Benj Hardy married Penelope Toler in Pike Cty, Alabama and moved with most of his family into Louisiana and on to Sebastian Cty Arkansas..

Our Eligah G. Hearn was born in 1793 Del. and died abt. 1867-68 (age of 75) in Brazos or Grimes cty Texas (he disappears from tax records 1868). I have done copious research on this man and have surmised he died during the cholera/yellow fever epidemic in that area during 1866-1868. He married Eliz. Hodnett 22 Aug 1847 Union Cty AR, and is on 1850 Grimes Co TX and 1680 Brazos Cty TX census.

If you think this may be your Eligah J. Hearn, I will be glad to share what I have with you and the list.

Hearne DNA Participants & Researchers wanted

DNA project for Harn/Harne/Hearn/Hearne surnames is in progress. We're seeking other participants for our project, as we attempt to sort out the various lines of early ancestors with the same or similar names. The name Harn/Harne, it is said, began as Heron, became Hearn/Hearne, and eventually became Harn/Horn. Some branches retained earlier spellings while other branches changed. This makes proving a paper trail more difficult.

Our Harn family's known beginning is in Maryland in the mid-1700s. They may have much earlier origins here, but we have yet to complete a paper trail proving it. The same family members' records use Harn and Hearn interchangably.

If you are an Ancestry member, the price for a DNA test is 50% off until October 31st, so this is a great time to do this test. If you have previously been tested at Family Tree DNA, your results can be transferred. Two of our group have already submitted their samples.

A DNA test is a simple cheek swab. No blood is involved. Only those markers that are handed down from father to son are tracked. This is NOT a complete DNA analysis. These results will show if men share a common ancestor, and how far back that ancestor connection occurred. You will be notified of all matches currently in their file and of any future matches found. For a full explanation of what we can learn, I suggest you visit the DNA tab on Ancestry.com.

Our line begins in Frederick Co., Maryland with John and Dorcas Davis Harn. He was b about 1740 and died after 1811 and before 1820. John's sons were Caleb, Mathias, Denton, Greenbury, Elijah, Horatio, and Johnzee. Some remained in Maryland. One migrated very early to Kentucky. Some moved to western Pennsylvania. From there they spread to Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois and many points beyond.

We've gathered much data about the earlier Hearne/Hearn families on the eastern shore of Maryland and in Delaware, as well as on a Michael and Daniel in Anne Arundel county, and an Overton Harne in Frederick and Washington counties. We also have a contact who has done much work on a line in South Carolina. We'd like to add to our research group.

We have amassed a great deal of material in pursuit of our ancestry. Some of it connects to our family and much doesn't. We're willing to share whatever we have with any participant. Everyone will benefit by pooling our efforts! If you're female, we welcome you as an addition to the research group without a DNA test. Tests for women aren't helpful. The bigger our group grows, the more we all learn.

Please contact LouAnn at LSpyres1@suddenlink.net. [the character before the @ is the numeral one] if you'd like to become a DNA participant and work with us to sort out all the early Harn/Harne/Hearn/Hearne families.

Elizabeth Harris who married Stephen Hearne

I am searching for any information concerning the ancestry of Elizabeth Harris who married Stephen Hearn in Montgomery Co., NC (probably) on 8 Nov 1810. They moved to Wilson Co., TN c1814 and both died there.

I have some circumstantial evidence that she was the daughter of Etheldred Harris and the granddaughter of Maj. West Harris, but certainly no documentary proof. Francis Gray Harris, in his new book, "Harris From Essex County, England and Allied Families, Vol II" indicates that Etheldred's daughter Elizabeth married William Horn of Anson Co., NC and moved to Wildon Co., TN; but he offers no sources for this information.

I would like to correspond with anyone who has any information or interest.

Darrell Dunlop

Ebenezer Hearne SAR Grave Marking Ceremony

On 21 May the Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a grave marking ceremony at the grave of Revolutionary War patriot Ebenezer Hearne in the Macedonia Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Candor, Montgomery County, NC. The service will began at 1:30 PM. The public is invited. To reach the cemetery, proceed north from Candor on HWY 220A for about 1 mile and turn left at the "Macedonia 1 1/2 miles" sign. The church is on the right and the cemetery is on the left. The ceremony will be in the cemetery.

A special invitation is extended to all Hearne descendants. Ebenezer (1760-1840) served in the North Carolina line. His father was either Thomas or Purnell Hearne, depending on which researcher you believe.

Any questions should be directed to Darrell Dunlop (darrelldunlop@yahoo.com) (817-354-5559), or Steve Pittard (gpworth123@nc.rr.com) (910-483-2667).

Darrell Dunlop

I am looking for information about John R. Hearne who may have married Mary Ann Ross after 1900. Mary A. Ross, born 1867 in Arkansas, was the daughter of Josephine Sloan and John D. Ross. In 1900 Mary Ann is living with her father in Lavaca County, Texas.
I would like to verify that she married John R. Hearne and when she died and where she is buried. She was 33y old in 1900. Can anyone help?

I am Henry Hearne's youngest daughter, Albert's granddaughter and grew up hearing the sacred harp songs my family sang. My uncle Harvey and Aunt Helen are the only two siblings left. What a rich heritage we have received in the music passed down from the family. I have older cousins and siblings who could tell you about sacred harp in our family. Let me know if you would like more information.

(I've just started working on my Hearn/Hearne background, so I hope I've got this right!) Your grandfather, Albert, had an older half-brother, named Claud (no "E" on his first name or his last). Claud was my great-grandfather. My grandmother was Ruth Elizabeth Hearn Waid. I'd love to hear about your part of the family.

I'm in Dallas...have lived here all my life. I didn't get interested in the family tree until the early 90s and most of the folks I should have talked to (my parents, my dad's parents, etc) were gone already. We were always so involved with my grandfether's family (WAID), that I never really learned much about my grandmother's family. I know she has a cousin in Mineral Wells and I saw a post from him last night that the Hearns have a reunion out there in July. Other than that, the majority of my info has come from tracking down census records. I was VERY surprised to see how many distant cousins I might have in the Tarrant County area!

Looking for Putnam Co. Ga Hearnes

I am stuck on the who were the parents of my ancestor, Bethena Hearne. She was probably born around 1810/11 in Baldwin/Putnam Co. and married James Walter Richards in 1828 in Putnam Co. She died in Chambers Co AL by 1844 after having at least five...maybe six...children with James. I think Elijah Hearne might be her father but not sure. Anyone working on the Hearns in GA during the early 1800s? BTW, After AL, James took the family to Jackson Parish, LA and later the descendents moved to Grant Parish. Are there any Hearns that moved in a similar direction? Also, Bethena named her third son Clinton Richards (middle I dispute...on one census, it is Columbus, on another its CC only. Some think it was Christpher...I think that CC renamed himself in years after CWar)
Her second son was Ruffus and she had daughters Martha, Plonnie and Nancy. If these names sound similar, I would be interested to know of any possible links.

Thank you!

melissa
mseyedoc@suddenlink.net
I am trying to find NORMAN HEARNE or HERNE born May 1932. His father was a captain in the Indian Army in the 1920s. After the death of his young mother, Norman was looked after by my mother, Stella, and grandmother Florence, who lived in Kenley, Surrey. He was there for less than 2 years. He was then taken away when his father died, possibly by his aunt. It is believed he was taken to South Africa.

Thank you.

Stella

You have lots of relatives in the area. Yes, you should attend the July reunion. One great great uncle died since the last one I attended 3 years ago. One Hearne uncle, Harvey, is alive and in his 80s. Not very well. Lives in Richland Hills I think. He would probably enjoy having a visit from you. He's rather fragile though. He's the last sibling of Albert's. Helen is still alive but has Alzheimer's and lives in Oklahoma near her oldest daughter. My brother Lindy Hearne is a musician performer living in Winnsboro. lhearne@earthlink.net. He has a coffee house theatre there. You would enjoy that. Nice to "meet" another Hearne relatives.

John Hearne was supposedly born in Montgomery Co.,NC around 1760-62. He was the son of Thomas Hearne & Nancy Wilson who came from Somerset, Maryland. John settled in Wythe Co. (Now Bland Co.),Va.around 1800. He married a lady named Ann (some say: Annie Chesney) and they had 12 children -3 boys & 9 girls. John died in 1837 annd Ann died in 1841.

I would like to find out if John Hearn (Hearn, Hern, Herron, etc) served in the Revoutionary War.

It is said that his father, Thomas would not choose sides and therefore suffered at the hands of both sides and lost all his land.

If you know anything about John or Ann Hearn, please contact me.

Sincerely,
Pat Fannin

It is said that Anne Chesney married John Hearne. However, there is confusion over which John Hearne she married.

John W. Hearne who died in Wythe Co.,Va. in 1837 was married to a lady named Anne.
According to William T. Hearne's History she was a Chesney who died in 1841 in Wythe Co.,Va. This John & Anne Hearne had a grandchild named Harvey Chesney Hearne.

The other John Hearne who supposedly married Anne Chesney was named John Thomas Hearne and he was also born around 1760 and died in 1838 in Wilson Co.,Tenn.

Both John Hearnes are claimed to be the son of Thomas Hearne and Nancy Wilson.

Does anyone have any documentation regarding this matter.
Also, does anyone have anything on the John Thomas Hearne of Wilson Co.,Tenn.?

Sincerely,
Pat Fannin

I discend from the Hearn(e) line.

I have ggrandfather Ebenezer Hearn(e) sometimes spelled with an e living in Clinton, DeWitt county, Texas in mid 1800s. He married a Julia Keeler and had several children. Jesse Lee, John Lisha and a daughter Josephine. After he died she married twice more. I can't find the parents of either.

He had two brothers from family lore, one I know of is William David Hearn(e) I have his descendants. The other brother was George Thomas or Thomas George (we think). It seems the father had remarried and they had younger sibblings and got into a squabble with step-mother & father over discipline of the younger (brothers or sisters) and fled to Texas (the 3 of them). This is found in history handed down both on Ebenezer's and William's side. They owned some sort of mill (mill yard). Lumber?, Grist? or what we aren't sure and can find no link.

Any information is appreciated.

HERON SURNAME DNA PROJECT AT WORLD FAMILIES NET

Hello!! Our names are Dave and Linda Heron, and we are excited to announce our new Heron Surname DNA Project at World Families Network. DNA testing is one of the most powerful tools available to genealogists. DNA research can break down brick walls when nothing else can – even when the documentary evidence conflicts or the paper trail comes to an end. DNA test results help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father’s father).

We would like to invite you to join if you are in a direct paternal line to the Heron surname or its many variants -- Hairun, Heiron, Heroun, Herne, Herne, Hearn, Hearne, Hearon, Herran, Herrin, Herron, Herring, Harron, O Hearain, O hArain, O Haron, O Heron, McElheron, MacElheron, etc... If you are female and would like to participate you may act as a representative of a male descendant of the Heron (or its name variants) lineage.

The objective of this Heron Project is to:

1.                   Trace the various lineages found around the world back to a common ancestor -- Heron lineages have been located in Jamaica, Australia, Scotland, Ireland, England and North America;

2.                   Identify our ancestors’ migration routes;

3. Reconnect our Heron families and extend our pedigrees.

To join our project or to order a DNA test at a discounted price, go to http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/heron/index.html. Whether you are a direct male descendant or not, or if you do not wish to participate in DNA testing at this time, we welcome you to enter your Heron Family Ancestors on our “Patriarch” page, or to join the Heron Family Forum.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Linda and Dave Heron

HERON SURNAME DNA PROJECT:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/h/heron/index.html

Re: Texas - HEARNE family of Sacred Harp singers

I am the only son of Henry. My two sisters are Joan and Judy. We all grew up hearing Sacred Harp music and I've sung a little over the years. I still have a couple of sacred harp books that were my dad's. I now live in east Texas outside of Winnsboro, which is 100 east of Dallas. My son, Warren, lives in Denton and has been very interested in Sacred Harp in recent years.

Thanks for posting this.

Lindy

Re: Wives of Whitman F and John B Hearne

According to a marriage record filed at the Stanly County Courthouse, W.F. Hearne married Sarah Ann Rumage on Sept 15, 1858. The wedding was officiated by B.H. Carter, minister of the gospel. The names of parents were not required at this time, so this is all I can tell you. I cannot find a marriage record for John, but I have a guess about John B's wife--just a guess. Ora is an unusual name. There was an Ora Stone, born about 1869, the daughter of Adam W Stone and Sallie ____. Adam was the son of John F Stone and Nancy _____. John F Stone was one of the first justices of the peace in newly formed Stanly County (1841). I wondered where the Stone family moved off too--most of them had left Stanly County by 1900. Maybe if I can make a connection with Stones of Texas, I can find answers to some of my questions about this family. I don't mind doing simple look-ups here in Stanly County if you need further information.

Would appreciate any and all information on Elijah Hearn (Hearne) and his decendants. My great grand father was name Elijah. Served for the South, wounded in battle, captured--external scar = missing thumb. Married had kids and moved to East Texas. Two of the kids were George Morgan and Effie(possibly a nick-name). Another may have been known as Quinn or Quince or had a child by that name.

Further research on my part shows an Elijah E. Hearn (Born c.1845 in Alabama) married to Marquita (maiden name not available) with children HOrace L, E.L., George Morgan(my grandfather), and Effie. Information is from the 1900 census. There was some question in the family about my great-great grandfather having been name Elijah or Elisha. Before that we only have scant information of immigrating form Ireland after/during the potato famine and the ancestors being fine cabinet makers and/or carpenters.

Looks like we are not directly linked through the same Elijah. Could be that the Eligah J Hearn(e) could have had a brother or cousin who named a son after him. Hopefully I can find some link eventually. Thank you so much for your replies.

Jerry Hearn
Edinburg, Texas
